NFL Star Loves to Bake, Help Others

By Joanne Camas A six-foot-six, 275-pound guy baking dainty cupcakes is an incongruous picture, but many things Israel Idonije does break the mold. Idonije, an NFL veteran, who was born in Nigeria and raised in Canada, was recently honored at the White House for his humanitarian work. His foundation works with kids in his hometown of Winnipeg, Chicago, and West Africa, and he’s a visible presence at his all-star camps for inner-city youth. Defensive lineman Odonije has played for the Chicago Bears for 10 years and took the field in the Super Bowl with the team, but has just signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions. While his foundation will remain headquartered in the Windy City, you can imagine Izzy, as he’s known to kids and friends alike, will find time to brighten lives in the troubled Motor City too. The Detroit Lions start training camp for the upcoming season tomorrow, but Odonije managed to find time to answer some questions for Epicurious by email. I know food’s always been a big part of your life – for example, you helped your parents collect food for needy families when you were a child. Does it surprise you that so many families in this country are “food insecure”? It doesn’t surprise me about the amount of hungry children and families in the U.S. It is a sad and unnecessary situation — there is so much wasted surplus. It would be wonderful if there were a system in place to get the surplus food to people in need. Your foundation does a lot of great work with kids. Do you include healthy eating programs? The Israel Idonije Foundation focuses on five keys to life success. One of those keys is self-awareness. Who are you? Who do you want to be? Through self awareness we have the opportunity to discuss living a healthy lifestyle and the role that healthy eating plays. I hear that you love to make cupcakes. Why’s that a favorite thing, and how did it start? I love banana bread. So I make banana bread cupcakes with a blueberry cream cheese icing. It started with watching and helping my mother bake — pies, bread, cookies…you name it. Do you eat them all (hey, you’re an athlete, you need energy!)? Or do you take them to share with your teammates? I eat half and take half to the office or give them away. And do your teammates think it’s ironic that such an athletic man bakes? LOL. I think a lot of the guys cook. What’s your favorite recipe? Two favorites that I love to eat but do not cook are pounded yam and Ogbono soup, both of which are Nigerian recipes. I also love a glass of Chapman — another Nigerian favorite!! Do you cook any other specialties or family favorites? It is abundantly obvious Chicagoans have no qualms about electing radical leftists. A ridiculous notion advanced by one state representative from the crime-ridden city, however, illustrates the depravity of area politics.

Monique Davis, addressing the Windy City’s prevailing murder epidemic, shared a particularly deranged conspiracy theory.

“I’m going to tell you what some suspicions have been,” she told listeners of a local radio station, explaining “people have whispered” to her that “they’re not sure that black people are shooting all of these children.”

As if such willful ignorance was not discouraging enough, she suggested the brave men and women in law enforcement might actually be behind the widespread violence.

“I don’t want to spread this, but I’m just going to tell you what I’ve been hearing,” she said, in a transparent ploy to avoid responsibility for the absurd comment. “They suspect maybe the police are killing some of these kids.”

The representative demonstrated a quintessential leftist tactic by making tacit allegations without any tangible evidence. Once such misinformation reaches the public, they know at least a portion of the population will eagerly believe it to confirm their own prejudices.

The left has tried — often successfully — to foment hate toward the majority race in the aftermath of a case involving two minorities. Davis and her ideological comrades take the idiocy to another level by exonerating real murderers in favor of condemning those tasked with keeping citizens safe.

Garry McCarthy, superintendent of the Chicago police force, called Davis’ statements “absurd,” “inflammatory” and “insulting.” In response, the elected official doubled down by standing with the anonymous conspiracy theorists to whom she previously alluded.

Clearing up any confusion, Davis prefaced her statements on a local radio station with this disclaimer: “I’m not a detective; I’m not an investigator.”

She then repeated her previous contention that “many people in my community … believe it is possible that some of these murders are committed by our finest. Now, we can’t say that doesn’t happen.”

Disingenuous arguments often involve promulgating vicious rumors and calling on the accused to prove them wrong. Even in the notoriously corrupt culture of Chicago politics, such crass behavior should be considered beyond the pale.

It’s funny, you can technically refer to this week’s Chicago expo as both the largest and smallest North American auto show on the media circuit. On one hand, McCormick Place offers the most expansive show floor, meaning that, technically, it’s the largest; but in terms of the amount of actual news and vehicle debuts, Chicago is by far the smallest show. Ironic, don’tcha think?

Nevertheless, we’re having a good time here in the Windy City at the show’s 105th installment(!), and while there wasn’t a great deal to ooh and aah over on Day One, there’s still a lot to talk about at the Chicago Auto Show. We’ve collected all of the posts from our coverage today and grouped them together in handy roundup format for your perusal below. Enjoy!

Kia Previews Cross GT Large Crossover Concept [2013 Chicago Auto Show]

Kia is going crossover coconuts, it seems, and has announced a second crossover-concept debut for this spring, this time for the 2013 Chicago auto show. The Cross GT concept, which Kia is previewing with the photo above, will appear in the Windy City before the vaguely named Urban Vehicle two-door crossover-ish-looking show car bows at the Geneva show in March. 

Although Kia hasn’t specified how large the Urban Vehicle concept is, the company is being quite forthcoming with the Cross GT, stating that it previews a premium crossover larger than the Sorento. We’re betting that this means the Cross GT could someday morph into a big three-row crossover to go against the likes of the Chevy Traverse, Nissan Pathfinder, and Ford Explorer. What’s interesting is that the Cross GT appears to feature Kia’s current “Tiger Nose” grille, a styling touch deliberately missing from the Urban Vehicle’s front end. The Cross GT also has a sharply raked roofline that terminates in a chopped rear end reminiscent of Kia’s Track’ster concept from last year’s Chicago show, as well as a large, vertical fender vent located just aft of the front wheels.

We dig the Cross GT’s look, even when we put on our back-to-reality glasses that show a crossover with a normal roofline, smaller wheels, and (fingers crossed) no fender vent. Critically, Kia could use a large, three-row crossover in its lineup following the mercy killing of the wrong-car-at-the-wrong-time, body-on-frame, V-8–powered Borrego SUV.

Teased: Superman joining Kia's Justice League-themed fleet of vehicles

Kia is teaming up with the Justice League once again to create another show car that will be on display at the Chicago Auto Show. At the 2012 SEMA Show, Kia showed off various models inspired by DC Entertainment characters Batman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern and Cyborg, but a Superman-themed Kia Optima Hybrid will roll into the Windy City for next week’s show.

In the above drawing, we only get to see a small portion of this car inspired by the Man of Steel, but it will have the requisite red-and-blue paint scheme with Superman’s shield on the hood (subtle, it is not).

The previous cars include the Batman Optima, Aquaman Rio, Flash Forte Koup, Green Lantern Soul and Cyborg Forte. All six cars were created to raise awareness for the “We Can Be Heroes” campaign, which helps families in eastern Africa affected by drought and famine.

Under Chicago’s Police Chief Gary McCarthy and the hack that hired him, Chicago has quickly become Murder City USA. Last year by a substantial amount, more Americans died from gunfire in the Windy City than died in Afghanistan. The gunfire is coming from the violent street gangs that infect the streets of Chicago.

Since they have failed to solve the real problem of gunfire killing people in their streets, the current administration has invented a problem their media pals can fool the dupes that vote for them into thinking they are solving. Their invented problem is: what to do about “dangerous” people who are licensed gun owners?

Since their constituency of public housing dwellers doesn’t count when they complain, honest licensed gun owners who can put a spotlight on their failure to make the streets  safe  must be targeted and shut up. Last week McCarthy publicly warned licensed gun owners his officers would shoot them if they: “[turn] with a firearm in their hand” at the scene of a police involved incident.

Parroting the liberal lies about  licensed gun owners always make things worse when they attempt to use their gun to defend themselves or others, McCarthy said: “I don’t care if they’re licensed legal firearms, people who are not highly trained… putting guns in their hands is a recipe for disaster. So I’ll train our officers that there is a concealed carry law, but when somebody turns with a firearm in their hand the officer does not have an obligation to wait to get shot to return fire and we’re going to have tragedies as a result of that. I’m telling you right up front.”

McCarthy and his boss must have realized that kissing up to street gangs to get them to stop shooting people doesn’t work. With no other options they are now threatening honest citizens licensed to possess and use firearms to save their own lives. Can confiscation be far off?
