Long Term: 2013 Nissan Pathfinder: March 2013

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

Over the past few months, we’ve talked a lot about how our long-term 2013 Nissan Pathfinder functions as a daily-driver, long-hauler and all-weather warrior. And so far, it’s earning high praise from most of us for being a well-rounded, pleasant vehicle in these regards. But the vast majority of people who actually go out and buy a Pathfinder will do so because of its people-and-stuff-carrying abilities. Nissan specifically engineered the new Pathfinder to be a softer, more widely appealing crossover than the sort of rugged SUV that it was before, and in doing so, the company is hoping its new CUV will find homes in the garages of many American families.

We needed to get some family impressions of the new Pathfinder, and fast.

Thing is, many of us Autobloggers live the kid-free life – at least that’s true of most of us in the Detroit area where the Pathfinder currently resides. We have no doubts that the Pathfinder will get a proper family road trip workout from west coast editor Michael Harley after it shuffles over to the left side of the country, and it might also do a jaunt to North Carolina this summer with executive editor Chris Paukert and his family before it leaves the area, but in the meantime, we needed to get some family impressions of the new Pathfinder, and fast.

For the past couple of weeks, we handed our long-termer over to Autoblog and AOL Autos general manager and VP, Chris Eschenburg, who promised us lots of wife-and-kid impressions about this family-friendly vehicle.

First Drive: 2014 Ford Fiesta ST

Concentrated ST Formula Proves Just As Potent

I’m not the jealous type… usually. But I will fully admit to being somewhat of a Pouty Polly when I read executive editor Chris Paukert‘s report after driving the then-new 2013 Ford Focus ST through the impossibly pretty southern French Alps region last June. I feel like a broken record saying this yet again, but hot hatchbacks hold a special place in my heart. And while I’m always giddy to drive any sort of small, turbocharged three- or five-door at home in Detroit, my jealousy was indeed piqued after hearing Paukert tell about the challenging yet breathtaking roads he encountered while driving the flamin’ yellow Focus. You know, the sort of roads that, from above, look like carelessly drizzled lines of icing on the frosted Alpen caps.

Several months later, I found myself piloting a Focus ST just west of metro Detroit, pitting it head-to-head against one of Autoblog’s perennial favorite cars, the Volkswagen GTI. It was fantastic – enough so that I fully stand behind my statement that in terms of balls-out performance, the Focus ST cannot be beat as far as today’s front-wheel-drive hatches are concerned.

But I can’t be jealous of Paukert any longer. I’ve just returned from driving the new Ford Fiesta ST – in European-spec three-door guise – along many of those same roads in southern France. And while I really do love the larger Focus ST, my experience in the Fiesta has led me to believe that I, perhaps, had the better time.

The List: The List #0011: Drive to the Arctic Circle

The List #0011: Drive to the Arctic Circle - screencap from behind the wheel of Mercedes Sprinter

Filed under:

The List is back! The show took a hiatus after its first season, partly to give our hosts a much-needed break, and partly to gear up for its television debut on Speed – check out tonight’s new episode at 10:30PM EST/PST. But Jessi and Patrick have finally returned to Autoblog, and they’re back with a slate of new episodes that begins with this epic adventure that should definitely be on your list of 1,001 Car Things To Do Before You Die.

We’ve asked Jessi and Patrick to do some crazy, even dangerous, things during the course of producing this show (racing in the Baja 1000 comes to mind), but never before have they returned from an assignment a little surprised that they made it back.

Indeed, the Arctic Circle is a big, desolate and dangerous place to go for a drive, but it’s also beautiful, challenging and rewarding in a way that few other road trips can be. Thanks to an invitation by Mercedes-Benz and the company’s support crew, Jessi and Patrick teamed up with Autoblog executive editor Chris Paukert to attempt to drive a diesel Sprinter van to the Arctic Circle in the dead of winter for this mission. They returned with all of their fingers and toes intact to tell you the story, but did they make all the way there? You’ll have to watch it below to find out.
