Report: Man blames zombies for causing him to crash stolen big rig

By Zach Bowman

Filed under: Here’s a pro tip: if you happen to have stolen a semi truck and proceeded to crash it into a number of cars on an interstate, do yourself a favor and don’t blame the escapade on zombies. That’s exactly what 19-year-old Jerimiah Hartline did after he bounced his pilfered a big rig off of a number of vehicles in Temecula, CA. Hartline told the police he was attempting to flee from zombies when the accident happened, but that didn’t stop law enforcement from charging him with a rash of offenses, including auto theft, attempted auto theft, reckless driving, hit-and-run resulting in injury and driving without a license among others.

California Highway Patrol said truck driver Daniel Martinez picked Hartline up in Tennessee as he was headed to San Diego. But when Martinez stopped to make adjustments to his truck just off of I-15, Hartline jumped behind the wheel and took off after having visions of zombies “coming after him.”

There is some suspicion Hartline was under the influence of a controlled substance.

The young man then proceeded to swerve the truck from side to side in an attempt to elude his imagined pursuers. After around two miles, Hartline struck and overturned a Toyota Tacoma, which then bounced into a Toyota 4Runner and a Mercedes-Benz. Hartline then struck a Ford Taurus and a Honda Accord before jackknifing and blocking all four lanes of traffic. Hartline has since pleaded not guilty to all charges.

2 charged in kidnap, assault of Calf. girl, 10

The knifepoint kidnapping and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl started as a burglary, until the suspect apparently changed his mind and took the child from her San Fernando Valley bedroom, police said.

New details in the case were released Wednesday along with charges against 30-year-old Tobias Summers, who remains a fugitive.

Summers was charged with kidnapping burglary and nearly three dozen counts of sexual assault. If convicted, he faces multiple life terms in prison.

His alleged accomplice Daniel Martinez, 29, was also charged in the kidnapping Wednesday. He was in custody after his Monday arrest.

According to police, Summers broke into the house in the middle of the night March 27 while Martinez waited in a getaway car. Summers emerged from the home with the girl and they both got in the car.

Martinez drove a short distance and then abandoned the vehicle and disappeared. Summers took the girl to a vacant home nearby where he held her captive, police said.

At some point, according to a criminal complaint, Summers sexually assaulted her and forced her to pose for nude photos. The girl turned up about 12 hours later after the harrowing ordeal, disoriented and disheveled.

Police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said it was unclear why Summers abducted the girl but investigators don’t believe he had targeted her when he initially went to the home.

Martinez was charged with one count each of kidnapping and burglary. He faces a maximum 12-year prison term if found guilty. A phone message left for deputy public defender Robert Kayne was not immediately returned.

The girl was snatched from her bedroom and was found wandering near a Starbucks about six miles away. She was barefoot, had bruises and scratches, and wasn’t wearing the same clothes she had on when she vanished.

Both men have had problems with law enforcement in the past. Summers has a criminal record dating back to 2002 that includes arrests for robbery, battery and grand theft auto. Court records show Martinez has been convicted of burglary and grand theft.

Police have received more than 130 tips in recent days regarding Summers, who they believe may have fled …read more

Two men charged in kidnapping of 10-year-old Los Angeles girl

Two men with criminal pasts were charged Wednesday in the kidnapping of a 10-year-old girl who was abducted at knifepoint and sexually assaulted after being taken from her Los Angeles home in the middle of the night.

Prosecutors filed nearly three dozen counts of sexual assault against 30-year-old fugitive Tobias Summers. He also faces kidnapping and burglary charges along with suspected accomplice Daniel Martinez.

If convicted, Summers could face multiple life terms in prison.

Authorities believe Martinez waited in a car outside the girl’s home and drove a short distance with Summers and the girl after they emerged from the house.

Martinez then left and wasn’t involved any further, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Martinez, 29, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to one count each of kidnapping and burglary. Bail was set at $150,000 and he was scheduled to return to court April 10.

If convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison.

The girl was abducted about 3 a.m. on March 27 and found about 12 hours later wandering near a Starbucks about six miles away. She was barefoot, had bruises and scratches, and wasn’t wearing the same clothes she had on when she vanished.

Police have said Summers took the girl to an abandoned home in her neighborhood and held her captive. Court records accuse him of forcing her to perform sexual acts and pose for nude photographs.

Police are searching for Summers, a transient they identified as a suspect over the weekend. Summers has a criminal record dating back to 2002 that includes arrests for robbery, battery and grand theft auto.

Court records show Martinez has been convicted of burglary and grand theft.

Police have received as many as 90 tips in the past several days regarding Summers, who they believe may have fled to San Diego or Mexico and changed his appearance by shaving his head.
