Sidecar warns drivers to steer clear of airport after arrests

Sidecar is advising its drivers to steer clear of San Francisco International Airport after officials there started issuing citations to drivers for picking up and dropping off passengers.

“We’ve heard rumblings that there may be increased enforcement actions at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and media is reporting a citizen’s arrest of a Lyft driver,” Sidecar told its drivers in an email Tuesday.

In March, the airport sent cease-and-desist letters to Sidecar, Lyft and Uber, “claiming that ride-sharing services are not allowed to operate on SFO property,” the email said.

“We want to let you know that we are working hard to get this situation resolved ASAP. In the meantime and until the situation is resolved, we are advising that you avoid trips to SFO,” Sidecar told its drivers.

HUFFPOST HILL – Weinergate 2: The Sextening

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Steve King thinks most young undocumented immigrants haul “75 pounds of marijuana across the desert,” though he might be confusing them with Coachella attendees. Anthony Weiner sexted through 2012, begging the question: What the hell has to happen for someone to finally switch to Snapchat? And if the last two days have taught us anything about media strategy, it’s that Syria’s rebels need to start giving birth to royals and/or snapping photos of their man parts ASAP. This is HUFFPOST HILL for Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013:

HOUSE REPUBLICANS COALESCING AROUND DREAMER REFORMS – Elise Foley: “House Republicans made clear on Tuesday that some are open to allowing Dreamers, the young undocumented immigrants who came to the country as children, to become citizens. Their parents, though, may be left out in the cold. ‘I do not believe that parents who made the decision to illegally enter the U.S. while forcing their children to join them should be afforded the same treatment as these kids,’ Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) said at an immigration subcommittee hearing. ‘Because let’s be clear — parents bringing their young children to the U.S. illegally is not something we want to encourage.’ The hearing comes after Goodlatte and Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) announced they are working on a bill, tentatively named the KIDS Act, to offer Dreamers a path to citizenship. The legislators haven’t yet released any details of their bill, including the cutoff age for Dreamers and what would be required for children to secure citizenship. While the bill is still just a concept, it’s already receiving praise and criticism from both sides — particularly from Democrats who say the piecemeal approach is unfair and calling it a smokescreen for Republicans’ refusal to address the broader undocumented population.” [HuffPost]

John Boehner says no one has worked as hard on immigration reform as he has. Chris Frates asked whether the speaker would continue his “hands off” approach this fall. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Stop. Let’s get back to the premise of the question. Nobody spent more time trying to fix a broken immigration system than I have,” Boehner said. “I talked about it the day after the election, and I’ve talked about it a hundred times since. And while some may disagree about how we’re going about fixing the broken immigration system, it’s been a big goal of mine.” [National Journal]

Thor and Fringe Scribes to Write Trek 3?

A new pair of screenwriters are reportedly beaming aboard the tentatively titled Star Trek 3: Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz.

Their credits include the films Thor and X-Men: First Class and the TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe, and Andromeda. Fringe is produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, while Andromeda was based on material from Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. The pair have also scripted Fox’s in-development reboot of The Fantastic Four.

According to Badass Digest, Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are still involved in the sequel in a writing capacity and they “were instrumental in making the decision about going after Stentz and Miller. What (Orci & Kurtzman’s) day-to-day involvement moving forward will be I couldn’t say. Keep in mind this isn’t a done deal, so it’s possible that someone else could end up getting the gig. And there’s no guarantee they’re the final writers on the project. But as of right now it’s Stentz and Miller’s job to lose. And since Paramount wants this movie out in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, expect work to begin on it ASAP.”

Will Zimmerman Face Federal Civil-Rights Charges?

By Breaking News

George Zimmerman SC Will Zimmerman Face Federal Civil Rights Charges?

The not-guilty verdict in George Zimmerman’s trial for second-degree murder and manslaughter is not the end of the legal story. There are still a few court cases to pursue, including a few that may emanate from Zimmerman’s camp, such as a defamation lawsuit against NBC News for doctoring audiotapes to make Zimmerman sound like a racist. Zimmerman attorney James Beasley is quoted in the Washington Post saying his team plans to “start in earnest ASAP” on this lawsuit. Incidentally, the Post also quotes NBC’s remarkable defense of its creative video editing, issued before the verdict was handed down on Saturday:

NBC Universal Media responded to the Zimmerman complaint by noting that other media outlets played up the racial angle of Zimmerman’s deadly encounter with Trayvon Martin.

The company also noted the pivotal nature of the second-degree murder case: “[I]f Zimmerman is convicted, that fact alone will constitute substantial evidence that the destruction of his reputation is the result of his own criminal conduct, and not of the broadcasts at issue which, like countless other news reports disseminated by media entities throughout the country, reported on the underlying events.”

In other words, it’s OK for the media to lie outrageously and slander someone, provided they go on to lose at trial? It would do the deeply sick world of left-wing agenda journalism a world of good if Zimmerman sued NBC “News” into oblivion, and taught the rest of them a stern lesson, but this sort of thing usually ends in a settlement.

There’s also the high probability of a civil suit from Trayvon Martin’s family against Zimmerman. ABC News reviewed this option in a piece bizarrely entitled “George Zimmerman Could Face Civil Suits, Death Threats, Federal Prosecution.” What do you mean, “could face death threats,” ABC? The man is positively buried under them. New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz just had to apologize for venturing his opinion that “Zimmerman doesn’t last a year before the hood catches up to him.”

SAS and Teradata Recognized for Alliance Excellence, Market Impact

Analytics powerhouses honored for six years of success, innovative programs, growth

CARY, N.C. & DAYTON, Ohio–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The SAS and Teradata partnership has earned the 2013 ASAP Alliance Excellence Award in the Individual Alliance Excellence category, which is awarded by the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals (ASAP), the leading professional association dedicated to elevating and promoting the profession of alliance management. The award acknowledged the partnership’s innovation, with continued growth and success over six years. Key accomplishments highlighted by ASAP include: governance structure, market impact and innovative programming, including tight R&D integration, the League of Analytic Heroes initiative and a joint Product Advisory Council.

“The SAS and Teradata alliance embodies the spirit of the Alliance Excellence Awards. It has been exemplary not just in terms of the great results it has achieved, but in how it has achieved them,” said Art Canter, President and CEO of ASAP. “The companies have displayed a high degree of collaboration, obtained strong support from their CEOs and adeptly aligned themselves across major functional areas, including project management, R&D, product management, marketing, services and technical support.”

More than 300 alliance professionals from around the world gathered on March 6 at ASAP‘s annual Alliance Excellence Awards Recognition Dinner in Orlando, FL, part of the 2013 ASAP Global Alliance Summit, the world’s largest annual gathering of the alliance management profession’s prominent organizations and thought leaders.

“This recognition within the alliance management community validates the hard work SAS and Teradata have invested into growing a multilayered and productive partnership for both companies,” said Elishia Rousos, CA-AM, Director of the SAS® Alliance.

ASAP cited the deep mutual technical engagement between the two companies. In 2012, Teradata (NYSE: TDC), the data solutions leader focused on big data analytics platforms and data warehousing, released an analytic appliance solely for use with SAS software – a first for the company. Business analytics leader SAS worked with Teradata to effectively port its software on the appliance and install it during the manufacturing process – likewise, an unprecedented move. The alliance has handled more than 400 customer engagements, netting more than 250 joint customer wins.

“Managing a business-technology partnership between two strong, independent companies like ours – who in fact are the leaders in their respective fields – requires an exceptional strategy, focused teamwork, agility and human commitment,” said Rick Lower, CA-AM, …read more

Police, families cope with cop killer's aftermath

As soon as he heard officers were chasing the suspected cop killer in a stolen truck, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Roger Loftis was certain: His buddy Jeremiah MacKay would be there.

In 15 years with the department, “Jer” had earned about a dozen and a half awards for 10851s — the California penal code for grand theft auto. Once, while heading to a bar to celebrate another award, MacKay noticed there were no keys in the ignition of the car next to him at a traffic light, and he veered off.

He waltzed into the bar two hours later, a grin stretched across that fair, freckled face, a copy of an auto recovery record in his hand.

Last week, Loftis called his fishing, drinking and golfing buddy to see how he was doing. He knew the 35-year-old detective had been working around the clock, scouring the San Bernardino Mountains in the search for former Los Angeles Police Officer Christopher Dorner.

“If that guy’s still on this mountain,” MacKay told him, “I’m going to find him.”

When the announcer reported that two deputies had exchanged fire with the suspect, Loftis got a sick feeling in his stomach. The 54-year-old corrections officer sent his friend a text.

“I know you’re busy,” he typed. “But let me know you’re OK. ASAP.”

There was no answer.

About an hour later, a colleague called with the news: MacKay, husband and father of two, was dead. Soon, so would be his killer.

Like the Unabomber and other mass killers, the 33-year-old former cop wrote a “manifesto.” And, like so many others, Dorner’s perceptions of the world and its supposed injustices against him seem out of sync with reality.

Why now?

Was it the supposed institutional racism that cost him his LAPD badge? That was four years ago.

Was it, as he once suggested, residual trauma from his military service in the Middle East? Records show a relatively benign tour of duty, well outside the war zone.

The Biggest Fib of 2013; We Have Reduced "the Deficit by More Than $2.5 Trillion"

By Robert Lenzner, Forbes Staff The most shameful lie in the President’s State of the Union speech was the following claim: “Over the last few years, both parties have worked together to reduce the deficit by more than $2.5 trillion. As a result we are more than halfway toward the goal of $4 trillion in deficit reduction that economists say we need to stabilize our finances.” I was shocked by this blatant attempt to convince the nation that it is not really necessary to make cuts in Social Security and Medicare. Rather, after misrepresenting the agreement reached in the Budget Control Act of 2011 to cap domestic programs by $1.2 trillion over 10 years– most of which are on the come– not actually made– the President then went on to try and spend more money we don’t have on infrastructure( he should have done it in 2009) It sure would be helpful if we could hire people to repair 70,000 bridges, establish pre-nursery schools for every 4 year old kid, attack the environmental problems that emanate from global warming, and welcome valuable immigrants from around the globe. But, first we have to decide which domestic programs need to be capped, and obtain agreement on how to proceed in a manner that won’t result in another recession and higher unemployment. Maybe the White House intends to pay for all this by closing loopholes for fat-cat oilmen. That would be a hell of an achievement. Still, I’d rather learn precisely how and where and when and how much we have already reduced the deficit by $2.5 trillion. There’s a challenge for some enterprising journalist like myself. I’ll let you know how it comes out ASAP. …read more
