Star Trek shuttlecraft on display at NASA HQ

By hnn

Capt. Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise had a five-year mission. But one of the starship’s shuttles has been on a nearly 50-year mission that ends Wednesday.

The shuttle craft Galileo, which appeared in seven episodes of the original Star Trek series, is settling in Wednesday at its final landing place, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s space center in Houston.

It has been a long voyage for this nearly full-size shuttle that was built for “The Galileo Seven” episode, which first aired in January 1967. The historic TV prop might never have made it to the space center if it wasn’t for a first-class Star Trek fan….

Simon Pegg Not Interested in Doing Star Wars

We all know how much Simon Pegg and Nick Frost love Star Wars, but that doesn’t mean they want to be in Star Wars.

”I don’t want to be in Star Wars, I think it would spoil it,” Pegg tells The Age. Never mind that he’s already made two Star Trek movies with director J.J. Abrams, who is jumping universes to do Episode VII.

”When I saw Star Wars when I was a kid, I saw a bunch of people I’d never seen before with some lofty, very respectable older actors in senior roles,” says Pegg. “‘I would hope J.J. doesn’t stunt-cast the film. It would be great to get some new peeps in it, it would be amazing.”

Thor and Fringe Scribes to Write Trek 3?

A new pair of screenwriters are reportedly beaming aboard the tentatively titled Star Trek 3: Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz.

Their credits include the films Thor and X-Men: First Class and the TV series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe, and Andromeda. Fringe is produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, while Andromeda was based on material from Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. The pair have also scripted Fox’s in-development reboot of The Fantastic Four.

According to Badass Digest, Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are still involved in the sequel in a writing capacity and they “were instrumental in making the decision about going after Stentz and Miller. What (Orci & Kurtzman’s) day-to-day involvement moving forward will be I couldn’t say. Keep in mind this isn’t a done deal, so it’s possible that someone else could end up getting the gig. And there’s no guarantee they’re the final writers on the project. But as of right now it’s Stentz and Miller’s job to lose. And since Paramount wants this movie out in 2016 to mark the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, expect work to begin on it ASAP.”

Quinto: Star Trek 3 Could Film Next Year

Mr. Spock himself, Zachary Quinto, recently appeared at the Galway Film Fleadh where he gave attendees an update on the third film in Paramount’s rebooted Star Trek series.

According to BuzzHub, Quinto said, “Star Trek 3 should be filming, I suppose, next year. It’s going to be made a lot quicker than the last one. That’s the plan, although nothing is confirmed yet.”

Quinto added that J.J. Abrams still hopes to direct the next Trek but didn’t elaborate. This seems highly unlikely to happen, though, as Abrams begins filming Star Wars: Episode VII in early 2014 and will then oversee post-production on that until it’s 2015 release.

11 Screenshots That Show Some of the Glitches with 'Star Trek' the Videogame

By Carol Pinchefsky, Contributor

Videogame SC Mad Video Game Science

I had quite an adventure playing Star Trek the videogame, if not the one that Paramount/Digital Extremes had in mind. (Note: As you see from the first screenshot, this will turn out to be a pun.) Here are eleven screenshots showing some of the frustrating and/or hilarious problems I encountered.

34 Things Wrong with 'Star Trek' the Videogame

By Carol Pinchefsky, Contributor

There was one wonderful moment in the Star Trek videogame on the bridge of the Enterprise. Kirk has a decision to make, one that will affect the entire crew, and all eyes are upon him. And as he makes his decision, it becomes clear that Kirk had made the best yet unexpected choice. It was a brief moment, but it was full of tension.

Star Trek: The Game Review

As a life-long fan of the shows and films, I’ve seen a lot of bad Star Trek in my time… but playing Star Trek: The Game reminded me that it’ll never get any easier to see the potential of one of science fiction’s greatest universes squandered on a barely serviceable, paint-by-numbers third-person shooter. Terrible animations, dull combat, repetitive puzzles, and rampant bugs wore out Star Trek’s welcome long before its pointless story came to an end.

What did I expect from a licensed game released a few weeks ahead of a major movie? Oh, I don’t know… how about a plot that’s more ambitious than, “Oh no, velociraptors with ray guns have stolen a superweapon, we’d better shoot them until we get it back! Pew pew pew. The end.” No? Too much? Alright then, how about combat that isn’t completely generic, featuring a clever weapon perhaps? Maybe some kind of substantial difference between the two playable characters? Or even a reasonable expectation that a bug won’t cause my own weapon to explode in my face when I fire a charged shot? Nope, nope, and nope.

Lucasfilm Boss on J.J., Ep. VII and Secrecy

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy was in Las Vegas this week to receive the 2013 Pioneer of the Year Award at CinemaCon, during which time she spoke to the press about Star Wars: Episode VII, J.J. Abrams and how his Star Wars will be different from his Star Trek, trying to keep secrets in the Internet age, and being a role model for tomorrow’s female filmmakers.

Judging from her comments near the end of the interview, it would seem Lucasfilm may be a bit more transparent with information on Episode VII than it was on the prequels or than how J.J. Abrams has traditionally been in regards to the Internet, fandom and secrecy.

Two starships! Think one of them is called the Reliant? (Nah. I expect it’s another Enterprise.)

Star Trek: Watch 30 Minutes of Gameplay

We’ve been playing Star Trek: The Game, which bridges the gap between J.J. Abrams’ hit 2009 movie and its forthcoming sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.

In the first video, Alex and I follow Kirk and Spock as they answer a distress call from a nearby space station that’s having a few problems with an erratic sun. It’s the very first mission of the game, showcasing several of the game’s core mechanics – including how to use Trek’s iconic tricorder – and some of the game’s key locations, including the bridge of the Enterprise. (We’ve edited it down a bit to concentrate on key moments.)

In the next video we visit New Vulcan. If you remember correctly, Spock’s homeland was destroyed in the first movie by a rather miffed Romulan known as Nero. The level demonstrates how stealth works in the game, the usefulness of Spock’s mindmeld ability and Kirk’s first encounter with the game’s ‘big bad’ – the Gorn.

Freedom and equality for all

When will be without a government that tells us what freedom is?  Even “liberals” must admit that liberal means freedom…. freedom FROM government or others.  I am always then why liberals wish more government and control over freedom or more regulation.  It seems contrary!  So, should we all be liberal and wish more government an do and give all we have for it?  Lets say we do.  Now, we are all democrats and liberal.  We all have healthcare, gay marriage that we all give toward, cell phones and there are no rich people.  Here we are. Now what?  No greed exists? There are no groups or no one that has more than another… including our government?  Why now do I have incentive?  I have all I need, government provided.  Who’s paying for this?

Really, how elementary does simple logic and finance understand human nature, the failed attempts during the first landings by Europeans on this continent that it takes to know common wealth, all equal people can work.  We, people, are not progressed enough intelligently, to do as they represent in Star Trek.. that all wish and work for better.

Sadly, we still don’t care of others more that ourselves.. even at the expence of ourselves or our families  in the long term.

The Enterprise Is Falling!

Long gone are the floating tri-head or dual-head posters of yesteryear for Star Trek, though this new one-sheet for Into Darkness is pretty great in its own way. The Enterprise is falling!

Of course, everyone is assuming that’s the Enterprise that’s in jeopardy in the poster and trailers… or at least, Kirk’s Enterprise. Hmmmm…

There’s also a new international TV spot out today as well:

Google Really Is Trying to Be the Star Trek Computer

By Kevin Spak For years, when Google employees likened their projects to the Star Trek computer, Farhad Manjoo dismissed it as a convenient media metaphor. “Google is very likely the nerdiest large company on earth; of course its employees like Star Trek, ” he writes in Slate . But after many, many references, he started…
