2013 Buick LaCrosse Shaquille O’Neal Commercial: Q Scores and A-Listers [The Ad Section]

By Don Klein

Buick LaCross

Award-winning ad man-cum-auto journalist Don Klein knows a good (or bad) car commercial when he sees one; the Ad Section is his space to tell you what he thinks of the latest spots. The ad’s rating is depicted via the shift pattern at the bottom, but everyone has an opinion when it comes to advertising, so hit Backfires below and tell us what you think, too.

When it comes to popularity, size matters. Jimmy Fallon, for example, is huge, and so is Alec Baldwin. I’m talking about their Q Scores, which are survey-derived metrics that indicate a celebrity’s overall recognition and popularity within a specific target audience. For decades, Q Scores (a proprietary name owned by the company that generates them) have been the gold standard by which ad agencies assess a celebrity’s value as a spokesperson.

As with many things in life, the larger the Q Score, the better. Which brings us to Shaquille O’Neal. To help me put things in perspective, I called Steve Levitt, president of The Q Score Company, who told me that while the average celebrity is recognized by 29 percent of young American adult males, a whopping 70 percent recognize Shaq. Among sports fans, that number is even higher. So if you’re targeting your sales message to those guys, it might behoove you to consider hiring The Big Shaqtus to appear in one of your commercials—or if you’re Buick, two of your commercials.

Last year, Buick dubbed O’Neal a “Size Authority” and squeezed him into a LaCrosse eAssist to tout the car’s luxury, interior space, and gas mileage. That entertaining commercial culminated with the line, “I’ve got shoes that are bigger than most hybrids—and more stylish, too.” This time around, they have him listing additional attributes, such as “sophisticated styling” and “fresh technology.” Shaq’s punch line? “Like my Mom said the day I was born: ‘Wow, that’s a lot more than I expected!’ ”

Given O’Neal’s size (the man is over seven feet tall and is charitably listed at 325 pounds), I don’t doubt he was enormous from day one. And given his wealth (his fortune has been estimated at $250 million), I have no trouble believing he sports some extravagant footwear. But I do have trouble believing that Shaquille O’Neal drives a LaCrosse. Even casual sports fans know that Shaq is all about cars, and that he has a stable of exotics that has included legroom-modified Ferraris, a giant Escalade, and a custom stretch Lamborghini Gallardo. So are we supposed to believe that this three-time NBA Finals MVP, multiple-championship winning sports titan tools around town in a stock, $35,000 sedan with just 38 inches of front headroom? Of course not. To quote the great philosopher Biz Markie, “Don’t even give me that.” But in these commercials, Shaq is speaking as a paid salesman, not an owner, so he doesn’t need to own a LaCrosse any more than a Ferrari salesman is required to own a 458 Italia. He’s qualified to talk about size and luxury …read more

Which Brand Will Win The 2013 NCAA Tournament?

By Darren Heitner, Contributor

There are three NCAA Corporate Champions sponsors: Capital One, Coca-Cola and AT&T.  Each use their status to infiltrate their target markets through the NCAA Tournament, hoping to capitalize off of an enhanced ability to access and reach the potential consumer and use NCAA logos, marks and designations in the process.  As FORBES highlighted last week, Capital One has gone all-in on its television and digital campaign using Alec Baldwin and Charles Barkley as spokespersons, along with an emphasis on its Twitter hashtag, #rallycry.  It hopes that its campaign will push Capital One to first place among brands participating in the NCAA Tournament. …read more

Justin Timberlake Joins The Five-Timers Club During ‘SNL’ Monologue (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Justin Timberlake joined the most exclusive club in New York when he hosted “Saturday Night Live” this week, the Five-Timers Club.

Entering the ranks of Paul Simon, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks and many more, Timberlake was welcomed into the lounge where some of the most beloved hosts of the show seem to just hang out and make current cast members fight for their amusement.

The monologue turned into a who’s-who of SNLs past, featuring Simon, Martin, Dan Aykroyd (who was relegated to tending bar since he’s only hosted the show once), Chevy Chase, Martin Short, Alec Baldwin, Hanks, and Candice Bergen.

Alec Baldwin Uses “C-Word!”

By capblack

Alec Baldwin SC Alec Baldwin Uses C Word!

Liberal heartthrob Alec Baldwin allegedly had a world-class Dem Crow attack where he recently called a Black New York Post photographer, among other things, a “coon.”

As if “drug dealer” and “crackhead” weren’t enough to call an American Black who’s also a retired NYPD officer?

Alec Baldwin used the “C-Word!” Will Obama and the Congressional Black Caucus ignore daily urban fratricide to banish him from Hollyweird liberaldom?

Not likely.

It warms my heart to see a high-profile member of the so-called “party of the little man” show just how little he always thought of the little man.

If true, don’t expect the pigmentary politburo ruling my figurative side of town (Black America) to fall over themselves chastising him.

That’s reserved for the likes of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and other conservative white men whom liberals of all colors feel are America’s only racists.

I wonder what Baldwin’s lame excuse will be for this tirade, while worried millions of dollars may possibly slip through his fingers?

Demonic possession?

Bi-polar disorder?

At day’s end (and I could be grievously wrong), nothing will happen because he’s a Hollyweird Democrat, and the mainstream media would have to demonstrate rare integrity to punish him on the merits of this allegation.

We’ll see.

If he did deploy the “C-Word”, he quoted from the old school Democrat handbook on what to call Black folks.

Way to go, Alec!

To quote a civil rights activist, Jesse Jackson, who may be allowed to address this case, “Keep Hope Alive!”

Al Sharpton: “People Do Not Have The Right To Unregulated Rights In This Country”

By Breaking News

Al Sharpton SC Al Sharpton: “People Do Not Have The Right To Unregulated Rights In This Country”

If I had to make a list of the most dishonest, bigoted and despised people I know of, Al Sharpton would be very close to the top. He has made a career of creating racial hatred rather than trying to end it. He speaks from a very black biased and bigoted view point, often without knowing the facts. I would place him the same category as Barack Obama, Eric Holder, Jesse Jackson Sr, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Maxine Waters, Charles Schumer, Alec Baldwin and Samuel L. Jackson.

In his latest public statement, he showed his socialist side as well. Sharpton and other black leaders were meeting and then held a press conference. In that press conference, Sharpton said,

“Absolutely, I mean if you look at the Second Amendment it was that you would have militia to protect yourself in case the government came and attacked citizens.”

“First of all, if the government were to come to disarm you, you would not be able to use an automatic weapon to defend yourself. Let’s be serious. We’re in a world of drones now so the Second Amendment would not help you in that area. It is absurd to try to cite that.”

“People do not have the right to unregulated rights in this country. And I think that for those that use the Second Amendment [they] are conceding that they have no argument on why you need a magazine with 100 rounds of ammunition or 30 rounds of ammunition.”

Stella McCartney Pre-Fall 2013

By Justin Fenner

Is there any party like a Stella McCartney pre-collection party? As she’s done before, the designer brought her Pre-Fall offering to New York City and presented it as part of a lavish cocktail party. This week’s event at the Americas Society drew a number of McCartney’s boldfaced fans: Anna Wintour, Garance Doré, and Glenn Close were spotted in the crowd, and so were Alec Baldwin, his wife Hilaria Thomas, and Jessica and Jerry Seinfeld.

But not even stars that bright could outshine the models or what they were wearing: Hanne Gaby Odiele, for example, was spotted sitting on a comfortable-looking chair. If she weren’t dressed in head-to-toe McCartney, she would have looked like any other chic partygoer.

That might be because the clothes themselves were designed, in McCartney’s words, to “address every need of the modern woman’s wardrobe.” Odiele’s dress was a long-sleeved gown in black and white, but the collection featured plenty of functional coats (some double-breasted varietals feature lapels so wide they span their wearer’s shoulders) and no shortage of well-tailored separates. The tone-on-tone floral prints in oxblood and dark blue add visual interest, and so do the stripes in black, white, orange, and red.

A few pictures from the party below, as well as the full collection, here in the gallery.
