Anna Wintour Brings Eva Chen Back to Condé Nast and Plans Another Major Hire

By Justin Fenner

It’s only been three weeks since Anna Wintour took on her much publicized new role as artistic director at Condé Nast, but word has it she’s already planning some key hires.

Fashionista confirmed on Wednesday that Wintour had hired former Teen Vogue beauty and health director Eva Chen to help with “several projects” at Lucky, where Wintour has reportedly been spending a lot of her time of late. (Last Week, The New York Post reported that the magazine’s editor in chief, Brandon Holley, was among the first to reach out to Wintour for help following her promotion.)

Page Six reported today that Wintour is on the lookout for a new head of public relations, preferably with a background in business or politics, to replace Vogue‘s outgoing director of communications, Megan Salt. Salt will leave the magazine on May 10 to take on a new job at Amazon Fashion.

By The Huffington Post News Editors

We all remember the scene in “Devil Wears Prada” when Anne Hathaway’s character gets a makeover in the fashion closet of Runway Magazine. As she strolls through the aisles of meticulously organized ready-to-wear, we catch a glimpse of the epic wall of shoes and the collection of handbags and dream about the possibility of getting our hands on any of those designer duds.

Now that dream is one step closer to becoming a reality.

When you watch a movie or a TV show about a character who works for a magazine, the stressful aspect of the job is usually not the focus. The emphasis tends to be on the clothes, the celebrity interviews, and the cool offices. According to MSN Careers, being an editor is the number one most stressful job. BRB, going on vacation!

Sarah Jessica Parker-Inspired Makeover: We Turned One Girl Into The ‘Sex And The City’ Icon (PHOTOS)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Sarah Jessica Parker is synonymous with style. Of course it all started with her Manolo Blahnik-loving character Carrie Bradshaw on “Sex and the City,” but her obsession with couture continued long after the television series ended. Since her days on the small screen, the 47-year-old mother of three has covered Vogue, started her own clothing label, Bitten and become bffs with industry heavy-hitters like Anna Wintour and Kenneth Cole.

Parker is a lady who knows how to color-block, power-clash and rock a metallic blazer — and that’s no small feat. Whether she’s on the red carpet or taking her twins to the park, she is always paparazzi ready in unique, inspired looks. Although the actress has had a prolific acting career, her sense of style is what put her on the map. Because Mrs. Matthew Broderick never gets it wrong, we decided to take a page out of her book and take style cues from the guru herself.

Everything You Need to Know About Anna Wintour's Brand-New Job

By Justin Fenner

Whatever doubts there may have been about Anna Wintour leaving Vogue were assuaged Tuesday night when Condé Nast revealed that it had named Wintour the company’s artistic director.

What the New Job Means:
Wintour will still be the editor in chief of Vogue and editorial director of Teen Vogue, but she’ll also take on some of the responsibilities of Si Newhouse, Jr., the chairman and CEO of Condé Nast. According to The New York Times, that will include advising editors on the company’s other magazines, expanding those brands onto new platforms, finding new talent, and reinforcing aesthetics.

Wait, Where’s Si Going?
Newhouse, 85, has reportedly been recusing himself of some of his duties since last year, and recently moved from Condé Nast’s 11th floor executive suite to an office on the sixth floor.

How Wintour Sees the Role:
She told the Times it’s “almost like being a one-person consulting firm . . . I advise all sorts of people in the outside world, and really, I see this as an extension of what I am doing, but on a broader scale.” Later, she added, “It isn’t about a machine or an iPhone or an iPad. It’s about people.”

Condé’s Reason For Creating the Role:
In a statement, the company said creation of the new role came at “the ideal time to leverage Anna’s extraordinary vision and leadership to amplify and elevate the profile of Condé Nast US both domestically and abroad. Anna is an icon in the worlds of fashion, business and the arts, she has the foresight and wisdom to influence the major trends of our society and is respected globally as an accomplished businesswoman.”

Out With Vogue, In With Pose

By Jesse Draper

In case you haven?t gotten the memo, Anna Wintour?s crown as queen bee of fashion is seriously threatened by street style bloggers, i.e. normal, everyday girls who document their outfits and accrue massive audiences (and influence, ahem Tavi) armed only with a point-and-shoot and a laptop. Well now there?s an app for that. …read more

Will John Galliano Stay at Oscar de la Renta?

By Justin Fenner

John Galliano‘s stint working in Oscar de la Renta‘s studio might just be extended into a full-time job – if Galliano wants it, that is.

“I would love for him to stay,” de la Renta told The Cut in an interview. “Will he? I cannot tell you that today because we haven’t gone that far in really discussing it. The fact is, we work very differently in New York than in Paris. It’s night and day. We work at a much faster pace. So the answer is we don’t know. We’re still exploring.”

But Galliano has had a little bit of time to adjust to the pace of an American fashion house. De la Renta shocked the industry in January when he welcomed Galliano to his studio on a three-week residency, later revealing that Anna Wintour asked him to bring Galliano in. He says the former Dior designer has had an impact on his Fall 2013 collection, which will be presented tomorrow.

“I like hearing what he thinks should be changed and improved about each piece that we are showing in the fall collection. I am not a loner,” he said. “In fact, my Achilles’ heel is being alone. I’ve said that when I am designing a collection, I wish the Virgin Mary would sit next to me.”

Ambassador Anna Wintour? Not Happening

By Justin Fenner

The president is still selecting staff members for his second term in office, but Anna Wintour won’t be one of them. According to The New York Times, White House officials told Wintour in November that the coveted ambassadorship to the United Kingdom – which she was reportedly in the running for after raising millions of dollars for President Obama‘s reelection campaign – would more than likely go to Matthew Barzun, chairman of the campaign’s fundraising effort. As for the ambassadorship to France, Wintour “was a potential candidate . . . but is no longer seeking the appointment,” the Times reported.

Is the World Ready to Forgive John Galliano?

By Justin Fenner

Galliano a three-week residency at his New York design studio on Friday, effectively signaling Galliano’s return to fashion. Will others in the industry – and in the world at large – welcome him back with open arms?

“I think John is doing all the right things,” de la Renta said in an interview with WWD. “Everyone in life deserves a second chance, especially someone as talented as John. I think that life is about forgiving and helping people.”

Forgiveness for the controversial anti-Semitic comments that got Galliano fired from Dior in March 2011 has been hard to come by, but that hasn’t stopped boldfaced names from making public displays of support for the designer. The stylist Patricia Field dismissed the incident as nothing more than a farce. Kate Moss sent him back to work when she asked him to create her wedding dress last year. Grace Coddington acknowledged that his situation was “a tough one to get over” in an interview last month. “I love John; I think he’s brilliant. He certainly intends to come back – when he’s ready.”

Coddington’s boss Anna Wintour told WSJ. Magazine shortly after he was fired, “This is all so tragic.” In April, she was reportedly spotted having lunch with him in Paris, and it’s been suggested that she’s behind his stay in de la Renta’s studio.

“I said and did things which hurt others, especially members of the Jewish community,” Galliano told WWD. “I remain committed to making amends to those I have hurt.”

The question that remains is whether a wider community is ready to accept his apologies.

Stella McCartney Pre-Fall 2013

By Justin Fenner

Is there any party like a Stella McCartney pre-collection party? As she’s done before, the designer brought her Pre-Fall offering to New York City and presented it as part of a lavish cocktail party. This week’s event at the Americas Society drew a number of McCartney’s boldfaced fans: Anna Wintour, Garance Doré, and Glenn Close were spotted in the crowd, and so were Alec Baldwin, his wife Hilaria Thomas, and Jessica and Jerry Seinfeld.

But not even stars that bright could outshine the models or what they were wearing: Hanne Gaby Odiele, for example, was spotted sitting on a comfortable-looking chair. If she weren’t dressed in head-to-toe McCartney, she would have looked like any other chic partygoer.

That might be because the clothes themselves were designed, in McCartney’s words, to “address every need of the modern woman’s wardrobe.” Odiele’s dress was a long-sleeved gown in black and white, but the collection featured plenty of functional coats (some double-breasted varietals feature lapels so wide they span their wearer’s shoulders) and no shortage of well-tailored separates. The tone-on-tone floral prints in oxblood and dark blue add visual interest, and so do the stripes in black, white, orange, and red.

A few pictures from the party below, as well as the full collection, here in the gallery.

Karl Lagerfeld: "I Have Nothing to Say"

By Christina Perez

He may be the most quoted man in fashion, but that doesn’t mean Karl Lagerfeld feels inclined to write a book any time soon. “No memoirs,” the Kaiser stated at today’s WWD CEO Summit at New York’s Plaza Hotel. “I have nothing to say.”

While that may be true, at least as far as the written word goes anyway, the legendary designer still voiced plenty of thoughts today in person. From the surprising locale of his next show (Dallas) to how it feels to be marking his 30th anniversary at Chanel (“Some people say I’m a hired gun. Well, I’m very happy to be one.”), Lagerfeld kept the bon mots coming and the assembled crowd – which included Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, and Sarah Jessica Parker – hanging on every word. Below, a few gems:

On career longevity: “Fashion is for people to wear and that has not changed.”

On inspiration: “When I like something, I don’t ask myself why. I just like it.”

On couture today: “There are so many new worlds, and so much new money. We have more couture clients now than we did 20 years ago. Many of the rich people of the past are poor compared to the rich people of today, I’m sorry.”

On his childhood ambitions: “I didn’t even know one could make a business out of fashion. Back then it was called clothes.”

On designers who complain about the workload: “You accept a job, you know the conditions. Don’t play the victim.”

On what irritates him most: “People who create complications in order to appear more professional.”

On Paris in the ’80s: “The ’80s were very difficult. I prefer to forget about them.”

On career setbacks: “Sometimes you go two steps back but that’s a healthy thing. No one’s career is a straight line.”

On his look: “You may think it’s very distinct but to me it is normal.”

On the potential of a retrospective: “I would never make a retrospective. I look forward, ahead, ahead. I don’t keep any kind of archive even.”

On his three steps to success: “What? Steps? Oh, there’s a whole staircase.”
