Press Briefing by Press Secretary Jay Carney, 7/31/2013

By The White House

James S. Brady Press Briefing Room

1:04 P.M. EDT

MR. CARNEY: I know you all welcomed her back on Monday when I wasn’t here, but it is great to have Jamie Smith back, a new mom, and a new, proud mom at that. If you haven't seen her little girl, she is beautiful, truly beautiful. So it’s great to have Jamie back. And it’s great to be here. (Laughter.) Now she’s going to have to go straight to daycare and check in on her. (Laughter.) I remember how that felt.

It’s great to be back here with you today. I have, before I take your questions, just a couple of things I want to note for you.

First, on Tuesday, August 6th, the President will travel to the Phoenix, Arizona area, to continue talking with Americans about his better bargain for the middle class. On Tuesday in Tennessee, the President laid out one cornerstone of that vision, a plan to create good jobs that pay decent wages by investing in manufacturing and infrastructure. Next week in Arizona, the President will lay out his plan to continue to help responsible homeowners and those Americans who seek to own their own homes as another cornerstone of how we can strengthen the middle class in America.

That afternoon, the President will then travel to Burbank, California, to tape an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The following day, Wednesday, August 7th — there’s a Leno fan in the front row I can tell. (Laughter.) The following day, on Wednesday, August 7th, the President will travel to Camp Pendleton to visit with troops and their families and to thank them for their extraordinary service to our nation.

My next announcement is in here somewhere — I thought. So with that — it’s not a big one — (laughter) — it’s just a meeting I'm sure you’d be interested in. No, I just wanted to note — and I will as much as I can off the cuff that today is the 49th anniversary of Medicare, and millions and millions of Americans — senior citizens — have led richer and healthier lives because of this extraordinary program and its success.

The President has, through a number of actions, and most noticeably, through the Affordable Care Act, strengthened Medicare and provided more benefits to seniors. And we are seeing a reduction in the growth rate of costs in Medicare, historic change in that growth rate, and we've seen it, obviously, in the private sector health care market as well. And that is a direct benefit of the Affordable Care Act as we implement it. And so that is a welcome thing.

We have over the years experienced debates about Medicare, calls to see it wither on the vine by some, efforts to turn it into a voucher program, essentially efforts to disrupt, dismantle and, in some ways, ultimately defeat Medicare. …read more

Jim Rash, Nat Faxon Moved Film Production To Steve Carell’s Family Vacation Spot (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Nat Faxon and Jim Rash must have really felt they needed Steve Carell for their new movie, “The Way Way Back.” They certainly went to great lengths to ensure his involvement, as they told Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show.”

They started by pleading with him in a long letter. But while Carell said that he liked the script, their shooting time was when he spends time with his family in Boston. With Carell not wanting to miss this time with his family, Faxon and Rash came up with a solution.

“And so, we said, ‘What if we shot it where you vacation with your family?‘” Faxon told Leno. “And that was enough to do it. And so, we shot it in his backyard.” Ironically, they even checked out Carell’s family house when they were scouting locations for the movie, though they didn’t realize it was his at the time. Things might have gotten more intimate had they selected it for filming.

Video: Jay Leno extracts the V12 engine from his McLaren F1

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

That is Jay Leno standing next to the BMW V12 extracted from his McLaren F1. Calling it “The scariest thing we have ever done here on Jay Leno’s Garage,” his mechanics pulled the motor to replace the Vanos unit, which was leaking.

His fright is our gain, though, as Leno gives us a tour of the 627-horsepower, naturally-aspirated 12-cylinder that powered the very car that taught us new ways to dream about supercars. The motorhead’s VIP tour happens in the video below.

Spitzer tells Leno he cares about public service

Eliot Spitzer says he is trying to revive his political career and running for New York City comptroller because he cares about public service.

The former New York governor appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in California on Friday night.

Spitzer, who resigned amid a prostitution scandal in 2008, told Leno that his public downfall was “incredibly painful” and said he had been infected with hubris.

He also touted his record of pursuing financial crimes as the state’s attorney general, saying “Wall Street desperately wants me to lose.”

Spitzer met a Thursday night deadline to file thousands of signatures in his bid to return to public office. He submitted more than 27,000 signatures to the city Board of Elections. He needed 3,750 valid signatures.

Jon Stewart’s NBC Joke: Mocks Network Over ‘Tonight Show’, Ratings (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

During his segment on Egyptian TV host Bassem Youssef on Monday, Jon Stewart took a pointed swipe at NBC, defending Jay Leno in the process.

While the joke was an unrelated gag intended to lighten the tone of a fairly heavy segment, Stewart didn’t throw it away either. He equated NBC with a failed, dictatorial empire and then noted, “A couple of bloggers just went nuts.”

We assume he was referring to someone else. Watch the clip above.

Did Kim Kardashian Inadvertently Reveal The Sex Of Her Baby On ‘The Tonight Show’? (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Did Kim Kardashian inadvertently reveal the sex of her baby with Kanye West during her appearance on “The Tonight Show.” It’s not certain, but Jay Leno seems to think she may have by dropping a possible name she was considering.

It happened when they addressed the rumors they’re considering the name North — thus dubbing the baby North West. Kardashian denied these rumors, but suggested something else.

“You know what name I do like, but it probably won’t be on? I do like, because it kind of goes with North, I like Easton. Easton West. I think that’s cute.”

Video: Jay Leno chats with Magnus Walker about his 1972 Porsche 911 72STR

By Zach Bowman

Magnus Walker's 1972 Porsche 911 72STR pictured in Jay Leno's Garage

Filed under:

Magnus Walker has stopped by the Big Dog Garage again to pay Jay Leno a visit in the latest episode of Jay Leno’s Garage. This time, the Porsche builder brought along his 1972 911 72STR 002. Walker calls the machine his best build to date, and the car is a rolling “best of” from Porsches past, rocking some of the more attractive elements pulled from a wide arc of 911 model years. Of course, the machine also wears a few signature Walker touches, including flush-mount turning indicators, a center-hood fuel filler and plenty of louver work.

Unlike some of Walker’s other creations, the 72STR 002 is clean enough to lick. Leno seems suitably impressed with the creation, and while apparently isn’t typically a fan of Porsche models in general, Walker’s tastefully modified 911 has him singing a different tune. You can check out the car in the video below.
