Motocross Madness Review

Playing Microsoft Game Studio’s Motocross Madness transported me to a happy place. It wasn’t just the nostalgia factor (1998’s original Motocross Madness on PC was one of the first open-sandbox racing games); it was the heady blend of two-wheeled racing action and entertaining arcade mayhem. Available on Xbox Live Arcade for a mere 800 Microsoft points ($10), this is a cheap and engaging two-wheeled experience.

There’s excellent value for the money too. Motocross Madness features nine expansive courses, each of which with multiple paths and shortcuts. Backdropped by three richly detailed versions of Egypt (complete with pyramids, Sphinxes, and archaeological digs), Australia, and Iceland, there’s a visual banquet of attractive scenery. I only wish there were more variety than just those three environments.

Achievements Build Evidence for Far Cry 3 Expansion

Earlier this month, a leaked Xbox Live Arcade logo suggested Far Cry 3 was getting some sort of standalone game titled “Blood Dragon.” Today a list of achievements, via Exophase, has been uncovered, continuing to build confirmation that Blood Dragon does in fact exist.

Blood Dragon‘s achievements reveal a few key things – including the fact that, yes, you’ll be battling dragons. Other points are earned by rescuing hostages, hunting animals, unlocking weapons attachments and finding VHS tapes. Nothing in the listing references any characters or settings within Far Cry 3, reinforcing the fact that despite sharing a name, Blood Dragon appears to have nothing to do with Rook Island or its inhabitants.

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood Announced

Press Play has announced that they have been at work developing a sequel to 2010’s Max & the Magic Marker, entitled Max: The Curse of Brotherhood.

Max will still be using his, well, magic marker to solve puzzles and make it through platforming sections. This time, he’s on a trip to save his brother, who he accidentally banished to a fantastical world. It’s all very Labyrinth.

“This time the game has been in development even longer, and though we are confident in the quality of our work (it was made with love) – it is just our humble hope, that you like it too,” says Press Play.

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood is currently only scheduled for Xbox Live Arcade, but we’ve reached out to Press Play to find out if it’s coming to other platforms.

Star Wars XBLA Game Could Lead to Battlefront 3

Last October, a leaked image revealed that a game called Star Wars: First Assault is headed to Xbox Live Arcade. Now, a new rumor suggests that game may actually be a “predecessor” to Star Wars: Battlefront III.

According to Kotaku, if First Assault is released and sells well, there’s a possibility that Battlefront III could be right behind it. Allegedly, developer LucasArts began work on First Assault with plans of using the code from the smaller shooter as a base for Battlefront III.

What is Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon?

A logo for “Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon” has been spotted online, indicating that a spinoff could be on the way. The logo was originally spotted by XBLA watchdog lifelower on Twitter and later made its way to the NeoGAF forums. While it hasn’t shown up on Xbox.com just yet, the image bears the “Arcade” banner typical of Xbox Live Arcade and could suggest that a downloadable spinoff is set to be released soon.

Minecraft Could Come to PlayStation, But Not Wii U

Mojang is considering making Minecraft for PlayStation after its exclusivity deal with Microsoft runs out – but a Wii U version is “very unlikely”.

In an interview with iGamer spotted by Edge, Mojang’s Jens Bergensten, who is lead designer on the mobile versions of the game, said “Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles… When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.”

Minecraft has sold ridiculously well on Xbox Live Arcade – it recently passed the five million mark on that platform alone, and would undoubtedly do well on Sony’s platforms too. It’s a shame that a Wii U version doesn’t seem to be a possibility, given the platform’s interface and its potential suitability for the game (and the fact that Minecraft’s family audience and Nintendo’s probably have a lot in common).

TMNT: Out of the Shadows Brawler Coming to XBLA and PSN

Activision and Redfly’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, will release on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this summer.

Out of the Shadows is a four-player online co-op brawler with a “skill-based combat system built around combo-driven action.” That could mean anything, but the concept is nice, especially after the Turtles in Time remake proved that simplistic combat doesn’t do the trick anymore.

Out of the Shadows is not based on Nickelodeon’s ongoing, excellent animated series, but exists in its own “hyper realistic 3D-style” world inspired by the show. For a clearer look at what that means, check out these images of Raphael, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and Leonardo below.

App Store Update: January 24

Every day hundreds of new apps make their debut on the App Store, and hundreds more are updated or reduced in price. We have sifted through the noise and highlighted those select few that might be worth your attention.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes – ($4.99)

We first saw this innovative strategy title come to the Nintendo DS back in 2009, and it earned high praise and a well-deserved 8.9 review rating in our initial assessment of it. The design only got better then, two years later, when it came to consoles via PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcadeit scored a 9.0 then. Now that it’s available as an iOS app, I’ve got no doubt it’s still just as engaging as ever – perhaps even more so. Give it a look:

    Is Terraria the Next Minecraft?

I follow the torch-lit path down, down, down. And then down some more, swinging my trusty flaming sword to slaughter the occasional demonic adversary as I descended. How much bigger could this map be? And what will I find when I get there?

The answer to both questions, it turns out, will either terrify or excite you. I’m playing on a map that 505 Games Community Manager Logan Rosenstein has already spent dozens of hours building and editing – and not only is there still a whole lot of vacant space yet to be built-out, but this is the smallest of the three canvas sizes you’re given the option to play with when you begin the game.

Such is the open-ended reality of Terraria, a game already known to PC players. The craft-heavy, let-your-imagination-run-wild 2D side-scrolling sandbox adventure is a bona fide indie hit on PC, where it’s sold over two million copies since releasing nearly two years ago. Console players are about to get their first taste, as publisher 505 and Dutch developer Engine Software bring Re-Logic’s hit to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network at the end of February, complete with much-needed tutorials and gamepad-friendly controls.

More Evidence of Resident Evil: Revelations on 360

An Achievement list for Resident Evil: Revelations has leaked online. As posted on Xbox360achievements.org, 50 Achievements have been spotted for the game, suggesting that it will be a full retail release as opposed to an Xbox Live Arcade outing.

The Achievements seemingly confirm a rumor from back in November when Revelations was rated for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 by a Korean ratings board. We reached out to Capcom about a console release but were simply told that the company hasn’t made any announcements regarding the title.
