Resident Evil: Revelations Leaps to Consoles

Editor’s Note: Please note that this preview is based on a demo of the PS3 and Xbox 360 port of Resident Evil Revelations. The Wii U version has a variety of GamePad-specific features which have yet to be revealed. However, this should still give you a general idea of what the Wii U version of this portable to console port is all about. Stay tuned to IGN for more information on the Wii U version as it becomes available.

Survival horror has become a loaded, dirty word in the last six months or so. Everyone seems to have a different, conveniently self-serving definition of the term, not to mention their own theory on why the genre is no longer “relevant” or “viable.” I say sit them down and make them play one mission of the console port for Resident Evil: Revelations, and if it doesn’t turn them into believers, then we can all just go back to our indie PC survival horror games secure in the knowledge that we tried.

Halo 3 And Other Titles Sighted in Steam Database

Halo 3 may be heading to PC shortly if a new addition to the Steam Database is to be believed.

Originally spotted by a NeoGAF user using xPaw’s Steam Database search, a series of new entries in the Steam registry suggests that the game will soon be winging its way onto Steam alongside a host of other titles.

Alongside known upcoming PC ports such as Resident Evil: Revelations, there are also a fair few titles that we had no idea were coming to Steam until now. Among these are La-Mulana, Fez, Dyad, Cut the Rope, Quantum Conundrum 2, Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition, Shadow Warrior Complete, Halo 2, Halo: Combat Evolved, Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Seasons and Second Life.

Resident Evil Will Return To Its Roots

Capcom has listened to fan feedback following Resident Evil 6 and knows that the series must return to its roots going forward, even mentioning the possibility of a reboot.

These comments come from Capcom’s Masachika Kawata, a long-term producer on the iconic survival horror series who spoke to IGN in London while discussing his latest project — bringing last year’s Nintendo 3DS title Resident Evil: Revelations to Xbox 360, Wii U, PlayStation 3 and PC.

“I think that it’s important for us to have users’ needs in mind when making the games,” Kawata told IGN. “At the same time I think a lot of what people want now is to have Chris and Jill in a game, or they want it to look like Resident Evil used to look like. That’s what makes the game work for them. We should be able to start from scratch and reboot it. It would still be Resident Evil. We wouldn’t lose the essential nature of what makes it a good game just by changing the characters.”

The Amazing Future of the Nintendo 3DS

For the past two years, 3DS owners have been on a bit of a roller coaster ride. The system’s launch and opening months were certainly anemic, but ever since the arrival of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, the portable’s fortunes continued to climb. That strong momentum continued into 2012 with several great releases, including Kid Icarus Uprising, Resident Evil Revelations, Paper Mario: Sticker Star and New Super Mario Bros. 2. Yet the fact that the year’s best releases (Pokemon Conquest and Pokemon Black & White 2) were still from the DS era was very much noteworthy.

As the powerful DS (finally) starts to fade from view, 2013 is in some ways is the first full test of Nintendo’s portable. The system can no longer rely on its predecessor. It must deliver new content, and do that consistently. Here’s what’s incredible: it will very likely do that. Looking over what’s imminent, what might make this year, and considering what could eventually make its way to the 3DS this year, there is a ton of quality content headed Nintendo’s way. Quite possibly more than the last two years combined.

Capcom's 3DS Games Heading to eShop

If you played and adored Resident Evil Revelations (like we did), you’ll be happy to know that you may have a fresh excuse to replay it in the near future. Capcom’s senior vice president, Christian Svensson, revealed the company’s plans to make past 3DS titles available to download on the 3DS eShop in a comment on Capcom’s official forums.

“Many of our our other previously released 3DS titles will be coming to the eShop in the coming months,” Svensson said. “Details to follow when we’re closer to release.”

In addition to Revelations, this likely means Capcom’s other 3DS titles – like Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition – have a good chance of making it to the eShop sometime soon. This confirmation is also a good indication that Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which launches this March, could see a simultaneous eShop release.

More Evidence of Resident Evil: Revelations on 360

An Achievement list for Resident Evil: Revelations has leaked online. As posted on Xbox360achievements.org, 50 Achievements have been spotted for the game, suggesting that it will be a full retail release as opposed to an Xbox Live Arcade outing.

The Achievements seemingly confirm a rumor from back in November when Revelations was rated for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 by a Korean ratings board. We reached out to Capcom about a console release but were simply told that the company hasn’t made any announcements regarding the title.

The Near-Death and Resurrection of the 3DS

The 3DS enjoyed a rather successful year in 2012, rising from the depths of defeat (in the form of a premature price cut just five months after launch) to become the hottest little portable out there. Following its shaky debut in March of 2011, the 3DS went on to destroy all expectations in 2012, its first full year on the market. It was the system’s first opportunity to really flex its wings and show off its potential – and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

As we dive headfirst into 2013, and all the surprises and epic gaming that hopefully await, let’s first take a look back at the 3DS’s journey this past year…

While January was painfully slow (sound familiar?), the 3DS still managed to kick off the year with a bang thanks to an excellent new entry in a beloved survival horror franchise. Resident Evil Revelations not only set the bar for what graphics on a 3DS can look like, it was also one of the greatest, most well-rounded entries in the series in years. Of course, along with this little gem came the arrival of something much less exciting (and much more confusing)… the already essentially forgotten Circle Pad Pro.
