Successful Indie Dev Defends Microsoft, Xbox 360

Microsoft hasn’t been getting great press from independent developers lately, most notably from Jonathan Blow (Braid) and Brian Provinciano (Retro City Rampage), who didn’t have glowing things to say about trying to work with the company that created the Xbox 360. Blow stated point-blank that “Microsoft treats independent developers very badly,” while Provinciano noted that the company has an “intimidating corporate vibe.”

But not every independent developer has had trouble with Microsoft. The Behemoth, the wildly successful studio behind Castle Crashers and BattleBlock Theater, has come out to defend Microsoft. BeefJack stumbled upon this Raptr Q&A with the studio’s Project Manager, Emil Ayoubkhan, and Ayoubkhan paints a bit of a different picture than Blow and Provinciano.

BattleBlock Theater Review

The Behemoth’s 2D platformer BattleBlock Theater is finally here. The quirky humor and attention to detail found in previous Behemoth games Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers returns in full force, but this time around a lack of gameplay focus brings down the overall package. Anyone can sit down and enjoy BattleBlock Theater, but few will fall in love with it.

All Behemoth games have featured laughs, usually in the form of sight-gags and others jokes lurking beneath the surface. Battleblock Theater brings this humor to the forefront, and it successfully permeates the entire experience – from the narrator’s manic opening monologue to the multiple songs that play over the end credits. The writing mixes poop jokes with pop-culture references, punctuated by higher-brow, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it self-referential humor. Between-world cutscenes in most platformers are good opportunities to get up and grab a snack. Here, they’re a highlight.

BattleBlock Theater Release Date Announced

The Behemoth has announced that BattleBlock Theater will hit Xbox Live Arcade on April 3rd.

The long-awaited follow-up to Castle Crashers will be available for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15) and offers “technologically evil cats, friendship, betrayal, co-optional justice, and several other forms of visual and audible stimulation.”

BattleBlock Theater was first announced in 2009 and officially named a year later. Last month, The Behemoth finally revealed a release window.
