Shopping Addiction Is Real — and It's Not Just Women
Filed under: Shopping, Clothing & Accessories, Spending
Shopping addiction is in the national spotlight this week after “Friday Night Lights” author Buzz Bissinger revealed in an article for GQ that he had spent $638,412 on designer clothes in three years.
Some people are skeptical about the reality of over-spending addictions, but they are very real, and can ruin a person’s finances, relationships, and life.
We got in touch with Terrence Shulman, the founder and director of The Shulman Center in Detroit, which treats compulsive theft, shopping, and hoarding, to find out more about the addiction.
Here’s what he had to say about “shopaholism.” Answers have been edited for clarity.
BUSINESS INSIDER: Is there a certain type of person who is inclined to become a shopaholic?
TERRENCE SHULMAN: I would say we need more research on that. But it affects men and women roughly equally. It also affects young people, because they’re getting access to credit cards at an earlier age. And kids want expensive gadgets: They want a new phone every year or a new video game every month. We also know it affects people who are well-to-do, are gainfully employed, and have a decent income just the same as people who are barely scraping by. So it really cuts across all categories.
BI: How do shopaholics behave, and does the addiction affect men and women differently?
TS: There are different patterns. They may shop for themselves, or for other people to gain love or approval. Some people have to get bargains, while others need a high-end item to feel good, and still others need something that directly improves their self-image or their image in the eyes of others — for instance, clothing. There are also people who buy and return items who we call return-aholics or bulimic shoppers.
Shopping addictions affect women a little more than men, but men are quickly catching up. Men don’t tend to over-shop, but over-spend: On a car, on a vacation, on sporting events, or on a concert. They typically go for larger purchases. Women can certainly do that too, but I’ve found women are a little more cautious about large purchases, but tend to do more continual shopping than men.
BI: How many people suffer from shopping addictions?
TS: There was a landmark study done at Stanford in 2006 where they estimated about 6 percent of the population, and I think that’s conservative. Then a few years later in 2008, the University of Virginia did a study that estimated it was closer to 9 percent. I would say about 10 percent of people have a compulsive buying or shopping problem.
BI: What causes people to over-shop?
TS: Two of the main things I see are over-indulgence and deprivation, either material or emotional. …read more

Tel-Instrument Announces DoD AIMS Program Office Certification on the TS-4530A Mode 5 IFF Flight-Line Test Set
Production Contracts Now In Place to Fully Satisfy the Mode 5 Testing Requirements of the U.S. Army, US Air Force, U.S. Navy and US Coast Guard
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Tel-Instrument Electronics Corp. (NYSE MKT Symbol: TIK) announced that the Department of Defense (DoD) AIMS Program Office has certified on March 11, 2013 its TS-4530A Flight Line Test Set for use in testing Mark XIIA IFF (“Identification Friend and Foe”), Mode S (ELS/EHS/ADS-B) and TCAS systems. This certification is related to a $44 million Indefinite Quantity/Indefinite Delivery (“IDIQ”) contract from the U.S. Army to upgrade up to 3,000 existing legacy test sets to support Mode 5 testing and produce up to 2,000 new TS-4530A test sets. The Company has already received over $22 million dollars in orders from this award. The current delivery schedule, which entails monthly billings of approximately $1 million, is currently being evaluated by the Army. The issue standing in the way of a full-rate production approval is the Army request that changes be made to the logistics documentation package. This could take several months to complete and the Company has requested Army approval to commence LRIP (limited rate initial production) shipments while updates are made to the logistics documentation.
Mr. Jeffrey O’Hara, the Company’s President and CEO said, “Tel-Instrument is pleased that AIMS has certified the TS-4530A product as this is a key milestone in moving towards a full-rate production release on this unit. Tel is working hard to secure Army approval to begin LRIP shipments in the near-term. The Company has begun building these units and is hopeful for a favorable decision from the Army. We have also submitted a progress payment request on this program to enhance our liquidity position. Commencement of production on the TS-4530A program will be a key step in propelling the Company into the growth phase that it has been anticipating for well over one year. With the TS-4530A certification in place, the Company has now secured AIMS approval on three Mode 5 flight-line test sets, including the CRAFT AN/USM-708, the CRAFT AN/USM-719, and the TS-4530A and has production contracts in place to fully satisfy the Mode 5 testing requirements of the U.S. Army, US Air Force, U.S. Navy and US Coast Guard.”

QNAP TS-269 Pro review: A fast and powerful NAS box with a steep learning curve
Few would dispute that QNAP makes very fast NAS hardware—the company’s boxes are consistently at the top of PCWorld’s performance charts. The TS-269 Pro is no exception, being the overall fastest two-bay NAS box that we’ve scrutinized on our new test platform. The margin of victory, however, wasn’t that great. What really sets this $600 (unpopulated) unit apart from the crowd is its slew of software features and its superior connectivity.
The TS-269 Pro features a 2.13GHz, dual-core Intel Atom D2700 CPU and 1GB of memory (which you can expand up to 3GB, using the single free SODIMM slot). One of my few complaints about the TS-269 Pro is that removing the case cover to access said memory slot was a bit of a chore the enclosure is baby smooth with nothing to grip. QNAP populated our test unit with two 1TB Western Digital WD10EFRX hard drives mirrored in RAID 1. The drive normally ships without drives.
My other minor gripe concerns the TS-269 Pro’s otherwise top-tier port array. The front USB port, normally used for quickly copying the contents of a USB flash drive, is only USB 2.0. I’m now using USB 3.0 thumb drives almost exclusively and reaching behind the unit to access the two significantly faster USB 3.0 ports is a bit of a pain. Otherwise it’s all good: dual gigabit Ethernet ports with failover and binding, an eSATA port, and two additional USB 2.0 ports. There’s also a Kensington lock port for securing the unit to your workbench or rack, and an HDMI port for outputting HD content and surveillance to a monitor or TV.

QNAP outshines everyone but Synology in the breadth of software features n its Linux-based operating system. These go way beyond simple file-sharing, administration, and backup to include iSCSI, iTunes and DLNA servers, direct photo/music/video viewing in your browser, and video surveillance support. You also get a VPN, FTP, and TFTP servers; full domain and LDAP support; and more. Check the company’s website for the full list, where you can also play with the operating system via an online demo. QNAP matches—and in some small ways beats—Synology in operating system features, QNAP’s OS is generally not as easy to use; it takes a fair amount of knowledge to implement many of its features.

I want the command to only display the ones that is related to my ssh session which are the ones in RED.
To be more specific, I am wanting to display a ps tree listing by providing the PPID.
I tried running the same command and including a -p [PPID] but that still does restrict the listing.
Also tried running the same command in Solaris and it is saying
$: ps -HAcl -F S -A f
ps: illegal option -- H
ps: illegal option -- F
usage: ps [ -aAdeflcjLPyZ ] [ -o format ] [ -t termlist ]
[ -u userlist ] [ -U userlist ] [ -G grouplist ]
[ -p proclist ] [ -g pgrplist ] [ -s sidlist ] [ -z zonelist ]
'format' is one or more of:
user ruser group rgroup uid ruid gid rgid pid ppid pgid sid taskid ctid
pri opri pcpu pmem vsz rss osz nice class time etime stime zone zoneid
f s c lwp nlwp psr tty addr wchan fname comm args projid project pset
Anyone know what’s the equivalent option to use in Solaris?
Feedback / advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Renumber position 88-94 inside all files matching criteria inside folder
There are 4 files inside one folder matching criteria i.e. File name = ABCJmdmfbsjopXXXXXXX_mm-dd-yyyy_XXX.data
Here is the Code which find the files matching criteria:-
Code:
TS=`date +”%m-%d-%Y”`| for fname in `find . -name “ABCJmdmfbsjop???????_${TS}*.data”`
do # Matching File Processing Code.
Here is expected output:-
For each file with following file name pattern we need to look at position 1 inside first file matching our search criteria if first letter of the line is 5 then position 88-94 will be 0000001 then look for line immediately after 5 which starts with i.e. position 1 = 8 then position 88-94 will be 0000001 for that line starting with 8. Now again look first line start with 5, if matches then set position 88-94 will be 0000002. Now again look for line starting with 8 and set position 88-94 will be 0000002. Process this untill end of First file. Now assume last occurrence of line starting with 8 have position 88-94 = 0000010 then Look for occurrence of 5 in position 1 inside Second file If found then set position 88-94 will be 0000011, Also find line staring with 8 immediately and set position 88-94 will be 0000011.Continue numbering this until we are done with file matching our file search criteria.

do # use those cut statements here done
TASK:- In each 5 record and 8 record there are numbers in positions 88-94. We need to renumber the existing numbers from pos 88-94 in each file starting with 0000001 for File 1 update this number in ascending order until the last 8 record in the file. Whatever number we end with in the A file we need to start with the next number in the file 2 and so on until we have done File1, File2, File3 & File4.
Guys please help me if you have time.
