1.6 Billion Bullets By The DHS Numbers

By Avg Joe

world mexguns full 6328 1.6 Billion Bullets by the DHS Numbers

I keep waiting for someone who knows what they are doing to investigate, look at the numbers and do some simple math. Since no one has, here is what I have been able to come up with based on “what has been reported thus far”. Most government contracting includes statements like, up to, which means that they can request more of an item over the period of the contract, but not the full amount if they don’t need that many. Most of the purchases are for a five year period, which means that they are not getting it all right away.

Since 2004, the number of Federal Agents has increased by about 30-40% to somewhere around 120,000 agents employed under about 70 Federal Departments. It is estimated that about 90,000 of these are under DHS. These are Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs) and include NOAA, SS, FWP, ICE, FPS, ATF, and just about all the alphabet soup entities of the federal government whose primary purpose is enforcement. It is a lot. However, 1.6 Billion rounds divided by 120,000 agents it is still 13,333 rounds per LEO.

Each LEO has to “qualify” at the range with any weapon that they carry on duty, twice a year. The standard qualification includes various shooting positions, magazine changes, and reloads, and hitting targets at various distances. Standard run of the mill street cops carry a side arm, rifle, and shotgun.

One of the departments that were folded into DHS is the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. It was originally under the Treasury Department. It operates four training centers in the United States and at least two outside. A statement by FLETC is that they use around 15 million rounds a year. This ammo is for all Federal Agents under DHS and the LEOs that work for say, the IRS or Social Security. FLETC also provides training for state and local LEOs that are outside of the aforementioned. It is unclear whether the 15 million rounds per year statement includes all of the training centers, or just the main one, in Georgia, a 1600 acre complex with multiple ranges and even a small town to simulate urban warfare, I mean urban LEO scenarios.

So if each of the FLETC locations uses 15 million rounds a year, which is a stretch, and there are at least six that we know of, a conservative estimate for all training using all three weapons, could be as high as 450 million rounds. That leaves approximately 1.2 billion rounds to be distributed to 120,000 LEOs in the field of operation. Or around 10,000 rounds per LEO.

So how much ammo is distributed to each LEO to carry in the field and how much is kept in reserve at each local office? Well we all know that every LEO in the field already has ammo, and each field office already has a stockpile, what are the additional 10,000 rounds per LEO for? That is an additional 2,000 rounds per year over the five year period.

It is still …read more

This Is (Part Of) The 2014 Chevy Camaro SS

Chevy teases the 2014 Camaro SS – image: GM Corp

Chevrolet looks like it will have a pretty epic year in 2013, thanks to the introduction of the 2014 Corvette Stingray and the 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan. While these two enthusiast-oriented vehicles are all-new, Chevrolet doesn’t want its fans to forget about the Camaro, either.

Calling it “the most significant change for the fifth-generation Camaro,” Chevrolet will unveil the updated 2014 Camaro at the New York Auto Show. It isn’t releasing any details (aside from the teaser image seen here), but it’s safe to expect a few styling tweaks, as well as a potentially updated interior.

We don’t see any major changes to the Camaro’s engine offerings, but GM could pull a fast one on us here; after all, it just announced a twin-turbo 3.6-liter V-6 for the Cadillac CTS and XTS, and that engine would fit nicely in the Camaro’s engine bay. Who wouldn’t want SS power with better fuel economy?

It’s worth pointing out that this face-lifted Camaro won’t be all-new. The next generation Camaro will reportedly use a smaller and lighter platform (which we view as a good thing), meaning that production won’t begin until Camaro assembly moves from Ontario, Canada to Michigan. The earliest that move will take place is 2015, meaning that an all-new Camaro isn’t likely to appear before 2016.

Teased: 2014 Chevy Camaro SS teased

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

2014 Chevy Camaro SS teaser image

Filed under:

Chevrolet has pulled the covers back ever so slightly on the 2014 Camaro SS, which is scheduled to debut at the upcoming New York Auto Show on Wednesday, March 27. As pointed out by GM in the brief press release below, this is the first meaningful update to the fifth-generation Camaro, minus all the more recent model variants, naturally.

We’re not expecting a bevy of exterior modifications – regardless of what you think of its performance, the fact that it’s been “the most popular sports car in America for three consecutive years” proves people like what they see – but we can spot a nip here and a tuck there (click on the image above to enlarge). For instance, there’s chrome trim highlighting the fascia, and the grille has been restyled with a cleaner look. We’re curious to see the rest of the car, especially what’s just out of frame in this teaser, like the air intake seen on the current car.

We’re also hoping for powertrain updates, including the addition of the LS7 engine, along with an improved interior. And finally, now would probably be a good time to remind you that we have seen some interesting views of what may be a refreshed Camaro already via the set of spy shots you see below. There aren’t any guarantees that these spy shots are the finished product, or if it is something other than as SS – it definitely doesn’t match the current car or the teaser above – but you’re welcome to scroll on through regardless.

Cadillac Announces 420-hp Twin-Turbo V-6 for 2014 CTS, XTS [2013 New York Auto Show]

By Alexander Stoklosa

2013 New York auto show full coverage

Cadillac has formally announced and detailed the twin-turbocharged, 3.6-liter V-6 engine we’ve known about for some time, as well as a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The engine seems to have been worth the wait, as the direct-injected V-6 makes a meaty 420 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. As we predicted, the new engine will make its way under the hood of the 2014 Cadillac CTS set to debut next week at the 2013 New York auto show, as well as the 2014 XTS coming later this year. It could spread to other GM models like the next-gen Chevy Camaro, next-gen SS sedan, and the forthcoming Cadillac ATS-V.

The twin-turbo V-6 essentially is the same as the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter six that powers a multitude of GM vehicles, although it has been thoroughly reworked for forced-induction. The cylinder block casting and cylinder heads are unique to the twin-turbo version, which also gets beefed-up connecting rods, its own set of machined pistons, and a lower 10.2:1 compression ratio. (The naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 in the 2013 CTS sedan has a 11.5:1 compression ratio.) Cadillac claims that the new six has 90 percent unique parts, including the top-mounted intercooler and the Mitsubishi-engineered turbos. The car’s impressive 118 horsepower per liter of displacement, Cadillac says, bests all other six-cylinder engines in the mid-size luxury segment. In fact, with 420 horsepower, the twin-turbo V-6 packs nearly the same output as BMW’s 445-hp, twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 found in the 2013 5-series, 6-series Gran Coupe, and 7-series and matches the power put out by the twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8 in Audi’s S6 and S7.

2014 Cadillac CTS (spy photo)

2014 Cadillac CTS (spy photo)

Cadillac believes that the engine will be powerful enough to propel the rear-drive version of the next-gen CTS sedan from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 170 mph. We’re thinking we’ll be able to improve on the predicted acceleration time once we get to test the new CTS, but the 4.6-second figure is within 0.7 second of the time posted by the current CTS-V sedan, which is powered by a supercharged small-block V-8 making 556 ponies. Cadillac didn’t elaborate on the potential performance of the front-drive-based XTS equipped with the twin-turbo V-6—or whether it will be de-tuned—but we assume that it will be paired exclusively with all-wheel-drive in that car.

In the CTS, the engine will come with a new, Aisin-sourced paddle-shifted eight-speed automatic transmission. (The force-fed XTS will make do with a six-speed auto.) Besides the twin-turbo V-6, the new CTS also will be available with a 272-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the same naturally aspirated, 3.6-liter engine found in the current model, albeit …read more

First Drive: 2014 Chevrolet Impala [w/video]

Can A Fleet Queen Become a Fullsize King?

On paper, the Chevrolet Impala is a pretty strong seller, posting annual sales that have hovered right around 170,000 units for the last two years, but it only takes one trip to practically any rental car agency to discover where the majority of those sales have come from. In fact, General Motors told Autoblog that a full 70 percent of Impala sales last year went to fleet companies for things like rental cars and government vehicles. Logic tells us that this is neither good for resale values nor name equity, so Chevrolet is getting ready to roll out an all-new Impala with improved comfort, styling and technology, hoping to turn the tables on its retail-to-fleet ratio.

Chevrolet’s sedans have come on quite strong in the last few months with the introduction of the Cruze diesel and the SS sedan, but while these will likely be low-volume sellers, there’s more pressure for the new Impala to perform well as GM looks to slash fleet sales and compete with the wide variety of full-size sub-luxury sedans. Riding on a platform shared with the Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS, the 2014 Impala will compete against the Hyundai Azera, Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon on the more traditional side, while also looking to take a bite out of somewhat sportier models like the Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger twins and the Nissan Maxima. We headed to sunny San Diego to see if this totally new Impala can stand on its own without the assistance of fleet companies and rental agencies. [w/video

Fins, Fleets, and Everything in Between: A Brief History of the Chevrolet Impala

By Don Sherman

1956 Chevrolet Impala Motorama show car

The 1956 Impala GM Motorama show car that started it all

Although production of the Impala has stopped and restarted a couple of times, it remains one of Chevrolet’s most revered nameplates—and America’s annual sales leader at various times. But the highly successful cars of the 1950s and ’60s were followed by a string of uninspired models that largely turned “Impala” into a synonym for “rental.” The all-new 2014 model aims to change that, with a fresh, sculpted design; modern technology; and direct-injected powertrains that include a hybridized four-cylinder. Look for our first drive of the ’14 tomorrow, but in the meantime, enjoy our brief look at Impalas past.

Chevrolet Impala Gen 1

1958 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe

Building on a theme presented at the 1956 GM Motoramas, the 1958 Impala wore a sensational Harley Earl–era design, with ample chrome decoration over deeply sculpted fenders, Chevy’s first dual headlamps, and triple taillamps. The major chassis advancement was a move from semi-elliptic leaf springs to coils at the rear.

Chevrolet Impala Gen 2

1959 Chevrolet Impala

When Bill Mitchell replaced Earl as GM’s design boss, Impalas received leaner, lower, wider styling highlighted by a radical bat-wing tail motif. Four-door hardtops and sedans joined the first gen’s coupe and convertible body styles.

Chevrolet Impala Gen 3

1963 Chevrolet Impala

The redesigned 1961 models showed a conservative streak with a boxier design, tidier dimensions, and a new wagon body style. Kicking off the early muscle-car days, the first SS badge on a production model and the iconic 409-cubic-inch (6.7-liter) big-block arrived at the onset of this generation.

Chevrolet Impala Gen 4

1965 Chevrolet Impala

The sleeker, more classic design that arrived in 1965 boosted the Impala over the 1-million-units-per-year hurdle, a record for a single car line. The Impala Caprice arrived as Chevy’s four-door hardtop flagship. Nine V-8s ranging in displacement from 283 cubic inches (4.6 liters) through 454 cubic inches (7.4 liters) were offered in this generation. The base engine was a 250-cube (4.1-liter) six.

Chevrolet Impala Gen 5

1971 Chevrolet Impala

The last of the biggies introduced for the 1971 model year was the largest Chevrolet ever produced. The advent of unleaded gas in ’72 drove lower compression ratios, reduced power, and diminished performance. The feds also required energy-absorbing bumpers for ’73—a significant setback for style.

The story of the 2014 Chevrolet SS: "Luxury, power, refinement, handling"

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Not including the women and men who built it, the 2014 Chevrolet SS has only been seen in person by a piddling number of people – fewer humans than would fill the gymnasium at a high school volleyball game. Not including the men and women who built it, no one has driven it. Even so, it is already saddled with two controversies: the way it looks and the way it shifts.

First to that shifting. Did we love the last Americanized Holden, the awesomely sportsome Pontiac G8 GXP, and its six-speed manual? Of course. Do we wish the SS came with a six-speed manual? Of course. But we’d like a toboggan to come with a manual transmission. We’d put a manual transmission on a weasel if we could because we’re just wired that way; if it moves, it should come with a stick and a clutch. Or at least the option.

Let’s climb down off the ledge, though. We haven’t driven the SS and we have no idea how good (or not) the automatic is. And the Hobson’s Choice in transmissions when it comes to sport sedans like the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Jaguar XFR-S and, oh yeah, cars-that-really-should-have-manuals like the Nissan GT-R and Porsche 918 and every single Lamborghini and Ferrari, for instance, hasn’t stopped us from enjoying what is clearly the gruesome, dual-clutched demise of Western automotive civilization. Because in spite of our ululations at the dying of the six-speed light, we understand.

All we’re saying is sure, we’re disappointed, but let’s drive it first – then we’ll find out if this is something more than a philosophical tragedy. When we asked what were the chances of a manual we were thrown the bones of “it’s a possibility down the line,” and that’s all we need to go to Optimism Level: Lloyd.

To that other, bigger controversy: the way it looks – it seems many of you were expecting more, or at least more different. However, as far back as 2009 it was acknowledged that the VF Holden Commodore would be an overhaul of the VE series, and mainly under the skin at that. There was neither the money nor the business case to create a brand new car. If there is an issue with the looks of the SS, it’s our opinion that we might have discovered 90 percent of the cure in the sedan’s trunk.

Motorsports: Race Recap: 2013 Daytona 500 runs 200 laps, six of them count [spoilers]

By Jonathon Ramsey

2013 Daytona 500 start

Filed under:

It’s been a huge month, leading up to the Super Bowl of NASCAR, the Daytona 500. This is the first year of the new Car of Tomorrow, the “Gen Six” car, and all of the drivers have been trying to figure out its intricacies. The Ford Fusion and Chevrolet NASCAR SS has joined the field and its street-legal equivalent, the SS, was introduced. A huge wreck in the Nationwide Series race the day before the Daytona 500 tore a car in half, tore a hole in the fence, sent car parts flying into the crowd and injured some 33 spectators.

And then, of course, making just her 11th Sprint Cup Series start, there was Danica Patrick on pole position. She’d lead the way for the 43 cars on the grid to start the 200 laps of the 2.5-mile oval called the Daytona International Speedway, with its five-story-high turns banked at 31 degrees and the 3,000-foot front stretch banked at 18 degrees.

Perhaps all that excitement is why James Franco, the honorary race starter there to promote Disney’s new film, Oz the Great and Powerful, yelled “Drivers, and Danica, start your engines!” to begin the 65th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship…

Report: GM won't sell 2014 Chevrolet SS in Canada

By Zach Bowman

2014 Chevrolet SS - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

Allow us to be the first to extend our condolences to our friends to the north. General Motors has announced the 2014 Chevrolet SS will not be available in Canada. The Globe and Mail reports the automaker has confirmed the high-performance sedan won’t hit Canadian dealers, though GM hasn’t offered up any reasoning as to why that is.

Buyers here in the US of A, meanwhile, can look forward to getting their hands on the 415-horspower, rear-wheel drive SS by late summer. Something tells us it won’t be long after that before Canadian officials start seeing individually imported 6.2-liter V8 four-doors in their neighborhoods. Fortunately, Canadian buyers will still be able to take home the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette. The C7 bowed at the Canadian International Auto Show last week, reportedly drawing sizable crowds and interest.

Quick Spin: 2013 Dodge Durango R/T

By Jeffrey N. Ross

2013 Dodge Durango R/T - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

Not too long ago, Chevrolet got itself into some trouble by throwing the SS badge on just about everything it produced, so I’ve always been a little hesitant about the seemingly excessive use of the R/T nameplate on Dodge vehicles. For the 2013 model year, every model in Dodge’s lineup has an R/T trim level from Dart all the way up to the Durango. Although the R/T name used to signified models made for road and track, I doubt anyone would be delusional enough to assume the Durango – and some of the other models wearing this badge – are suited for any sort of track duty.

Still, when this 2013 Dodge Durango R/T rolled up for me to drive for the week, I couldn’t help but take in its big, mean and imposing stance. Sure, if I had my choice of buying any of the Dodge R/T products, the Charger and Challenger would be my top picks for sure, but it’s easy to say that the Durango would be a close third – far above the R/T versions of the Avenger, Journey and Grand Caravan.

Driving Notes

  • Not that the current Durango was a bad-looking SUV to begin with, but the R/T package gives it more aggressive styling thanks to a monochromatic look. With the removal of just about all the chrome that comes on a Durango, this tester even looked good in what would normally be a boring shade of silver thanks to the body-colored front fascia, smoked headlights, 20-inch wheels and the sporty-looking rear fascia with dual exhaust outlets.
  • The styling might be there to back up the badge, but there is no extra power under the hood of the R/T. In possibly one of the best moves Dodge made with this particular model, the only engine offered is the 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The 360-horsepower, 390 pound-feet of torque engine feels adequate perfectly for this 5,331-pound utility. This is the only model of the Durango lineup that comes standard with the six-speed automatic transmission, too.
  • Fuel economy is about what you’d expect from a V8-powered SUV weighing as much as the Durango does, with EPA estimates of 13 miles per gallon in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. During my week with the R/T, this tester returned 15.5 mpg.
  • The Hemi is equipped with cylinder deactivation, which feels clunky at times when it switches from V8 to V4 power, with an ever-so-slight delay when the cylinders reengage once again. The only bypass for the system is just to be sure that you’re right foot stays planted whenever possible.
  • Chrysler says the Durango R/T comes with a sport suspension, but aside from the bigger standard wheels, I felt no difference between this and any other Durango I’ve driven in the past. If you’re really looking for a sporty, family-sized (three-row) SUV, you’re probably going to want to check out the new Explorer Sport.

Kiss Another NASCAR Record Goodbye as Danica Patrick Takes Daytona 500 Pole

By John Lamm

Since June 19, 1949 there have been 2354 top-level NASCAR races called everything from Strictly Stock to today’s Sprint Cup and in every event there was a male driver starting on the pole. You can kiss that record goodbye. Danica Patrick, driving a Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing, put the car on the pole for next Sunday’s Daytona 500. That quickest lap came in at 196.434 mph, making Patrick the only driver to hit the 196-mph mark other than her partner on the front row, four-time champ Jeff Gordon, also in an SS. Their spots are set for Sunday, while the rest of the field will race for their starting positions in a pair of 150-mile races on Thursday.

Unsurprising, many comments made regarding Patrick’s success claimed the qualifying session was rigged, a setup to get NASCAR publicity. Consider, though, that Patrick has been quick in practice all week, and took the pole for last year’s Nationwide race at Daytona. Remember, too, that she finished third in the Indy 500 in 2009 and won IndyCar’s Motegi race in 2008.

Patrick wasn’t the only woman driver making her mark at Daytona over the weekend, as Venezuelan driver Milka Duno—a naval engineer with numerous masters degrees—started from the front row of the ARCA race on Saturday, and led the first 11 laps.

As for the Patrick doubters, they’ll have to wait until the end of next Sunday to determine whether they’ve been proved right or wrong. The only problem for Patrick is that no pole-sitter has won the Daytona 500 since 2000.

Breaking: 2014 Chevrolet SS makes its live debut

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

Chevrolet showed off the new 2014 SS in an airport hangar last night, its first rear-wheel-drive performance sedan in the US since the Impala SS from 1997. We’ll have more to say about the SS later today, but this is the sedan that Chevrolet sees as the final piece in restoring its performance credentials. For those of you looking for a manual transmission, however, that wish will go unfulfilled – at least for now: the only two options buyers will have are the color and whether or not they want a sunroof.

We’ll work on getting some more angles (in better light) today at Daytona International Speedway, but with fans seeing the car for the first time, we don’t hold out much luck of getting a clear shot. So for now, enjoy the high-res gallery above.

2014 Chevrolet SS Revealed in Daytona w/ 415 HP

By Malcolm Hogan

2014_Chevrolet_SS_Daytona_01.jpg

The long awaited return of a full-sized luxury-performance sedan at the helm of General Motors has been captivated with the official reveal of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet SS. The highly-anticipated sports-sedan, providing a platform for its NASCAR Chevy SS counterpart on the racetrack, brings back that passion we once had for the Pontiac G8, while both cars are inspired by the Holden Commodore.

The new 2014 Chevy SS will be built alongside of its Australian-sourced Commodore counterpart in Australia packing the LS3 V8 engine producing a healthy 415 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. The new 2014 Chevy SS will only have one transmission option, a 6-speed automatic box with TapShift to direct power to the rear wheels. Thought that is a slight disappointment among enthusiasts, the Chevy SS will still be a capable competitor against other full-sized rivals. 0-60 mph times are estimated by Chevy to be in the sub five-second range. We can already take wild guesses as to what the tuner market will have in store for the SS.

2014 Chevrolet SS

Handling and stability will be the easy job of the MacPherson front strut setup and independent rear suspension geometry to balance an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution. To bring things to a halt, large 4-piston Brembo brake calipers will do the job up front biting down on 355-mm rotors. The Chevy SS will also feature lightweight 19-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped in Bridgestone 245/40ZR19 tires up front and 275/35ZR19 at the rears.

2014_Chevrolet_SS_Interior11.jpg

Inside of the new 2014 Chevrolet SS will be a spacious cabin with just as much, or more, legroom than vehicles like the Chrysler 300 and Hyundai Genesis Sedan. The Chevy SS will get exclusive leather seating and many SS embroideries and logos throughout the interior signifying the performance edge of the vehicle. A soft-touch dashboard with a 9-speaker Bose audio system, heads-up display, new safety tech (blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning), and a new Parking Assist that can parallel and right-angle park will be part of the SS’ edge in tech.

The official live unveiling will take place today in Daytona to preview the Daytona 500 race.

2014 Chevrolet SS

Ages from now, when we look back at 2008–2013 with 20/200 hindsight, we’ll likely deem GM’s quick-rinse bankruptcy a blessing. Case in point: the 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan arriving later this year. This car is an amalgam of a once-revered nameplate (SS) and one of the best cars developed by pre-Chapter 11 GM, the Pontiac G8. Without GM’s trip through the reorganization wringer, a rear-drive Chevy flagship might not have happened. READ MORE ››

Here’s What The New Chevy SS Will (Mostly) Look Like: Video

By Kurt Ernst

Holden Commodore

When Chevy rolled out its new SS-sedan-based NASCAR Sprint Cup car last October, it also announced a tentative launch plan for the SS and it’s foreign cousin, the Holden VF Commodore. Looking for a tie-in to the start of the 2013 NASCAR season, General Motors would introduce both cars during Speedweeks in Daytona, Florida, which precede the running of the Daytona 500 Sprint Cup race.

While that made perfect sense for the launch of the new Chevy SS in the United States, we were puzzled why Holden would introduce a new sedan half a world away from its domestic market. NASCAR doesn’t visit Australia (though we will see the Australian V8 Supercar series at Circuit of the Americas in May), so there’s no potential link there, either.

It turns out that Holden was thinking along the same lines, so it introduced the VF Commodore on February 10. The “virtual drive” video below shows the Holden VF Commodore SS V-Series and Calais V-Series, though to be honest we’re only guessing at the differences between the pair. Presumably, the Calais is more luxurious, while the SS is aimed more at the blue collar crowd.

Expect the SS to wear styling very similar to the red car in the video below. Call us crazy, but we see quite a bit of the Chrysler 200 in the VF Commodore’s design, especially in the front end. The headlights are similar in shape, and character lines in the hood are vaguely familiar, too.

Chevy is set to introduce the SS this weekend, so we’ll have complete details (and more accurate images) next week. Until then, here’s a rough idea of what to expect from Chevrolet’s latest muscle sedan.

Official: Chevrolet SS previewed by Holden VF Commodore SS V show car

Holden VF Commodore SS V show car

It won’t be long before we see the official, production-ready Chevrolet SS sedan (hint: it will be revealed this weekend). And to tide us over until all of the official details are released about the US-spec version, we have this: the Holden VF Commodore SS V show car, a performance-oriented brother to the Calais V that debuted earlier in the week.

What we really want to know about the SS V is what lies underhood, but General Motors’ Australian arm is keeping that under wraps until the Chevy model breaks cover this weekend. Nevertheless, it’s obvious that the SS V will be a serious performer, with all sorts of aggressive cues driving that home on the car’s exterior. Take a look at those 20-inch billet aluminum wheels that hide big Brembo brake calipers up front, the sculpted hood and front fascia, the wide air intakes with LED running lights and the quad exhaust pipes out back. It’s like the Pontiac G8 GXP never even left us.

Inside, there’s a sporty-looking interior with aluminum accents that mix in with black leather and suede surfaces, all tied together in the middle with an eight-inch MyLink touchscreen infotainment system. It looks great, and again, while we don’t know anything regarding powertrain details, it makes us oh-so happy to see a manual shifter smack dab in the middle of the center console.

Stay tuned for the whole kit and caboodle when the SS sedan is revealed this weekend. For now, scroll down to read Holden’s press release and click through the attached gallery to see the shape of Chevy things to come.

Official: New Holden Commodore bows, presages Chevy SS [w/video]

By John Neff

Holden has unveiled its redesigned VF Commodore sedan in Australia, and it’s making no secret of the fact that its prized rear-wheel-drive sedan will be exported to the USA as the long-awaited Chevrolet SS.

While the Australian arm of General Motors has held back on details concerning the car’s mechanicals and engines, we at least get to gaze upon the new exterior shape and interior design. The model Holden went with for the debut is the more luxurious, upscale Calais V model.

What we see is an evolution of the current Commodore, the design of which was already well-liked by most. The long, low and wide sedan shape is still there, but with a few more creases on the hood, new fender vents, LED daytime running lamps below projector lamp headlights, and a new rear end with an integrated lip spoiler in the deck lid. What we see is a design different enough from the current car that the SS we get won’t look like Pontiac G8 wearing a bow tie (like the police cruiser Caprice does).

The interior of the new VF Commodore, however, is a much bigger leap forward for the car, upgraded with a slicker design that incorporates the latest infotainment technologies. We’re talking a big nav screen (featuring the automaker’s MyLink system), electronic parking brake, high-res Heads-Up display and, wait for it, power window switches moved to the doors!

The Commodore will also be available with a host of the latest driver tech, including Reverse Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Alert, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Auto Park Assist. The latter actually takes semi-automated parking a step forward by not only assisting with parking of the parallel variety, but also working with 90-degree angle parks, as well.

Check out the new VF Commodore in our gallery above, and gander at what official info Holden did provide in the press release below.

Chevrolet Confirms SS to Debut February 16 in Daytona

By John Lamm

Circle February 16 on your calendar, even if you’re not a Chevy fan. The bow-tie brand has confirmed that’s the day the wraps come off the production Chevrolet SS, the day the rear-drive, big-motor Chevy sedan returns. Automotive News broke the story and Chevrolet has confirmed that to Car and Driver. This would be during SpeedWeeks at Daytona, which culminates with the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 24. It’s rare that Chevrolet would have a launch at a race track, but the NASCAR version of the SS is Chevy’s big weapon against the Ford Fusions and Toyota Camrys on the 2.5-mile banked oval.

While its rivals are based on four- or six-cylinder front-drive sedans, the SS is true to the stock-car racing layout, with a V-8 up front and drive through the rear wheels. The sheetmetal will be undeniably bow-tie in nature, while underneath is GM’s global Zeta platform. Shared with the Camaro and Holden VF Commodore, Zeta will be the basis for the SS, the first rear-drive Chevrolet sedan sold in the U.S. in 17 years. We’ll have to wait a bit for specifics, for while the SS racer will take to the track in February, the production SS will go on sale later in 2013 as a 2014 model. Given how much we liked the last variation on this engineering theme, the 0-to-60-in-4.7-seconds Pontiac G8, we’re just counting the days.
