Members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) are readying a flurry of bills in response to George Zimmerman’s acquittal on charges in last year’s fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin.
The lawmakers are drafting proposals intended to rein in racial profiling; scrap state stand-your-ground laws; and promote better training for the nation’s neighborhood watch volunteers, among other anti-violence measures.
CBC members had remained largely silent throughout the trial, but following the verdict, argued forcefully that, decades after the civil rights movement, the nation’s criminal justice system still discriminates against blacks and other minorities.
Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), an icon of the civil rights era, said the decision “seems to justify the stalking and killing of innocent black boys and deny them any avenue of self-defense.”
Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), head of the CBC, decried “the presumption of guilt so often associated with people of color.”
A six-member jury on Saturday found Zimmerman, whose father is white and mother is of Peruvian descent, not guilty of killing the African-American Martin last year in a gated community in Sanford, Fla.

A Walmart worker in Canada claims that speaking up for a doggie in distress cost her her job.
Carla Cheney, a former Kemptville, Ottawa, Walmart pharmacy technician, told CBC News she was worried about a canine left unattended in a truck by a customer. But when she confronted the customer instead of first reporting it to her supervisor, she apparently broke the retail giant’s protocol – not to mention ticking off the customer.
“He told me it was none of my business and I said that that was fine, that if I saw him do it again I would just call the police next time,” Cheney said. “He said he was no longer going to be shopping at that Walmart, and I said, ‘OK.'”
A Walmart Canada spokeswoman said there are guidelines for employees to follow when it comes to identifying dangers, including those involving pets. But the company said the associate was not fired for “trying to help a dog in a locked car.”
“We require our associates to follow these guidelines, which include reporting any safety concerns to a member of management, and engaging customers in a manner that is respectful,” Felicia Fefer told the CBC.
Walmart Canada also said in a statement that they will be posting signs in the front of their stores across Canada advising customers of the dangers of leaving kids and pets in hot vehicles.
A Facebook group dedicated to supporting Cheney, “Animal Rights for Kemptville Walmart,” had more than 12,000 members as of Friday afternoon.

Gays and lesbians in France may soon be able to marry and become parents.
The marriage equality bill currently before lawmakers would grant French same-sex couples the right to wed and jointly adopt children.
Although the first article of the bill, which removes all gender references from marriage applications, was approved in the National Assembly on Feb. 2, opponents added more than 5,000 amendments in order to slow down the legislation‘s passage. Final approval of the whole bill occurred on Feb. 12 with a vote of 329 to 229, the CBC reported.

The Canadian navy warship HMCS Toronto struck a “massive” blow against international drug traffickers Friday when it seized more than 1,100 pounds (500 kg) of heroin from a boat in the Indian Ocean.
The drugs, which have an estimated street value of more than $100 million, were uncovered after a naval boarding party searched the vessel during a security operation. In an interview with the CBC, Cmdr. David Patchell, the warship’s commanding officer, said the bust represents one of the largest seizures of heroin on the high seas.
“Very possibly these drugs could have ended up on Canadian streets,” Patchell said, adding that the drugs likely originated in Afghanistan and were destined for a port in Africa, although it is difficult to know for sure.
Egypt‘s military spokesman says the country’s naval forces have captured three scuba divers who were trying to sabotage an undersea Internet cable in the Mediterranean, while telecommunications executives blamed a weeklong Internet slowdown on damage caused to another cable by a ship.
Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali says in an announcement on his official Facebook page on Wednesday that divers were arrested while “cutting the undersea cable” of the country’s main communications company, Telecom Egypt. The statement said they were on a boat. It did not further have details on who they were.
Egypt‘s Internet services have been disrupted since March 22. Telecom Egypt executive manager Mohammed el-Nawawi told the private TV network CBC that the damage was caused by a ship, and there would be a full recovery on Thursday.

Earlier this year, a woman from a small island off the coast of Canada traveled around the world to meet with the owner of a Japanese fishing boat that washed up on her shores last summer.
CBC reports that Jeanne Beaver and her husband Rick discovered the boat last June while beachcombing near their floating cabin in Aristazabal Island’s Borrowman Bay in British Columbia.
By that point, the small fishing vessel, called ‘The Glory Light,’ had weathered more than 15 months at sea since the March 2011 tsunami tore it from its home. It traveled over 6,000 kilometers from Minaminsanriku, a small fishing village that was leveled during the natural disaster.

Buonanotte restaurant, located in French-speaking Quebec, Canada, recently came under fire for using the words “pasta” and “calamari” on its menu, reports CBC. The reason? The words aren’t paired with French translations on the menu, and that’s a problem for Quebec’s office of French language (OQLF).
CBC reported that the restaurant’s owner, Massimo Lecas, was told by authorities that Italian words such as “bottiglia,” “pasta” and “antipasto” should all have a French translation on the menu. He also claimed that he was told to translate the Italian words for meatball and calamari into French.
As the news (and outcry!) spread, the OQLF backed down a bit from the original claims. The office admitted that the requests were perhaps “overzealous” and explained that the inquiry began due to a citizen’s complaint. Appearing on CJAD radio, Martin Bergeron of the OQLF explained that in order to promote French among the public, official policy says that the most predominant language on a menu must be French. Italian words are welcome to appear, but just not as frequently as French ones.
