My Idiotic Reason For Preferring The Xbox One

By Dave Thier, Contributor

As and jockey for gamers’ attention for the Xbox One and PS4 this fall, I’m leaning towards agreeing with Erik Kain when he says that the PS4 will likely be the better choice. I like Sony’s policies towards indie games, I’m a huge fan of Naughty Dog, I’m not all that excited about the Kinect, and most importantly, I think Sony is set up for a slightly better launch than Xbox One. A bigger install base usually means better games, as well as better versions of multi-platform games. …read more

The Last of Us: Get Your Name in the Game

Although it’s just two months away, it feels like The Last of Us is never going to get here. Naughty Dog, the developer behind the survival action game and the folks who gave us the Uncharted series, are hard at work finishing up The Last of Us, but that doesn’t mean the studio isn’t up for some fun.

How would you like your name in The Last of Us? Not in the credits — in the actual game.

Our first hands-on preview with the game brought to light a group known as the Fireflies. Not much is known about them, but the demo had us taking Ellie to the group. Apparently, members of the Fireflies will have left their dog tags all over the world you’re struggling to survive in. These dog tags will act as collectibles, and Naughty Dog is giving eight U.S. IGN readers the chance to have their names included in the game on these dog tags.

Expanding the Saga of The Last of Us

Though the current console generation is rapidly winding down as the Playstation 4 and next Xbox system are being prepped for launch, there are still a handful of promising games on the horizon.

One of the most interesting new titles for 2013 is The Last of Us, a PS3 exclusive from Naughty Dog. This game presents a post-apocalyptic scenario where much of humanity has been infected by a zombie-like fungal plague and the survivors are closely guarded and controlled by the military. The game casts players as a man named Joel as he works to protect a young girl named Ellie and escort her to the base of a resistance cell known as the Fireflies.

Last of Us Dev Had to Request Female Testers

The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog had to request the game be focus tested on female players as well as male, after the research firm it was working with was planning on running it by male gamers only.

In an interview with The Escapist, the company’s creative director Neil Druckman explained how the studio stepped in after discovering the notion of polling female gamers for their take on the upcoming apocalyptic adventure game wasn’t on the table.

As Druckman tells it, “Another aspect that influences how a game is promoted is focus-testing. Players are rounded up and are asked to view materials and answer some quantitative and qualitative questions about it.

The Last of Us: American Dreams #1 Comic Review

By Jen Bosier, Contributor

2013 Lexus RX 350 F Sport - front three-quarter view

Now that BioShock Infinite has released to critical acclaim, the next most anticipated release this year is Naughty Dog‘s new IP, The Last of Us. The game promises to be a story-fueled experience, set in a unique post-pandemic landscape. To help give players a little background into the world of The Last of Us and, more importantly, Ellie, Dark Horse partnered with Naughty Dog to bring us American Dreams. The four-part comic series will perhaps offer some insight into why Ellie will be traveling with Joel, our player hero. …read more

Last of Us TV Spot To Air During Walking Dead Finale

Naughty Dog has announced that the first TV commercial for The Last of Us will air during The Walking Dead’s season finale. In a post on the PlayStation blog, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann announced the news and also said the game is approaching completion.

“We are now just three months away from the launch of The Last of Us — Naughty Dog’s newest franchise,” Druckmann wrote. “The team is working extremely hard on putting the finishing touches on the game. It’s exciting to see all the different aspects of the game finally come together into the vision we’ve had in mind all along. Joel and Ellie’s journey is turning out to be something truly special that we can’t wait to share with our fans.”

Heavy Rain Dev to Remain PlayStation Exclusive

These days, third-party exclusives are becoming rare. While Sony came out with a series of them early in PS3’s lifecycle — think Heavenly Sword, Lair, Haze and Resistance: Fall of Man — the company more often than not has to rely on the studios it owns outright to create PlayStation-only content. Twelve such studios exist, from Naughty Dog and Media Molecule to Polyphony Digital and Guerrilla Games, but Sony has also found an interesting source of even more exclusives from the independent French studio Quantic Dream.

Quantic Dream released its first PlayStation exclusive in 2010 in the form of Heavy Rain, and its upcoming PS3 swan song, Beyond: Two Souls, is due out this October (we recently played it, if you’re interested in learning more). The studio also recently confirmed that it’s working on its first PlayStation 4 game after rumors began to circulate that the game is called Singularity.

ESRB Rates Jak & Daxter Collection for PS Vita

This morning, a rather interesting link from the ESRB’s website has been circulating. It appears that the Entertainment Software Rating Board has rated the Jak & Daxter Collection for PlayStation Vita.

The Jak & Daxter series was a well-known and popular commodity on PlayStation 2. Developed by Sony-owned developer Naughty Dog — the studio previously responsible for Crash Bandicoot and since responsible for Uncharted and The Last of Us — Jak & Daxter was one of a number of PlayStation-exclusive 3D platformers on PS2, along with the likes of Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper.

The Last of Us at PAX East

PAX East 2013 is upon us, and the line to play The Last of Us here in Boston is already snaked around the booth and capped by PAX enforcers. But fear not – if you got turned away or even if you’re not in Boston, this is the demo I played last month.

That means: IGN has the full rundown on what’s happening with Naughty Dog’s next project.

Hands-on with The Last of Us: Sights and Sounds

After actually playing The Last of Us, it’s not the beautiful graphics, the brutal violence, or the approachable crafting system that stands out to me. It’s the sound. The Last of Us isn’t Uncharted, with its happy score wafting over every moment of gameplay. It’s a slow, suspenseful crawl through a world that can kill you at any moment. As such, it’s quiet – eerily quiet. You have time to listen to the rain pitter patter on windows and each breath of the infected you’re creeping up on to shiv in the neck.

The Last of Us: Single Player Campaign Length

There is no single, solitary PlayStation 3 exclusive coming out in 2013 that’s more anticipated than The Last of Us. Developed by Sony-owned studio Naughty Dog – the minds behind Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter and Uncharted – The Last of Us was recently delayed, and is now due out on June 14th worldwide.

And in an interview with EvolveEnt, we now know specifically how long the campaign will be in The Last of Us.

“We’re definitely looking at more than 12 hours, maybe 12 to 16 right now is what we’re looking at,” explains Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer in a video interview. “It really depends on how you play. You can play a little bit slower if you try to approach situations stealthy, if you really wanna explore the environment and scavenge, that’s going to add more time too.”

When Does The Last of Us Demo Arrive?

We’ve known for a while that God of War: Ascension would pack a demo for The Last of Us, but we didn’t know when the demo for developer Naughty Dog’s latest would go live. Well, we still don’t know for sure, but we’re narrowing down the dates.

On the back cover of God of War: Ascension, a footnote reads “Estimated availability for The Last of Us demo is April 2013. SEN

account and internet access required.” Seems like that would be the end of the story, but when you click to access the demo from the God of War: Ascension main menu, you get a black and white image of Joel and Ellie along with a countdown clock that’s set to end on May 31, 2013, at 9 a.m. Pacific/noon Eastern/5 p.m. GMT.

Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Goes Free to Play

Want to shoot Nathan Drake in the face without spending a dime? Well, your day has come. Today – when the PlayStation Store updates – Uncharted 3’s multiplayer will be free to download and play.

As you might expect, there are some restrictions. The competitive multiplayer is free up to Level 15; co-op modes aren’t included in the FTP client. However, Naughty Dog wants to give you options. If you want to raise the Level Cap to 25, it’ll cost you $4.99. If you want to remove the Level Cap restrictions, it’ll cost $19.99. If you want Co-op Arena, it’s $9.99. If you want Co-op Adventure, it’s $11.99.

Is this an attempt to save a fledgling multiplayer component?

“The answer really is no,” said Uncharted 3 Game Director Justin Richmond. “We really just wanted to add to that community as easily as we could.”

Last A Little Longer: 'The Last of Us' Eases Back A Month

By Daniel Nye Griffiths, Contributor

The Last of Us Creative Director Neil Druckmann has announced in a PlayStation blog that the hotly anticipated not-quite-zombies adventure is being pushed back just over a month to a June 14th date. Said Druckmann: As we entered the final phase of development for The Last of Us, we came to realise just how massive Joel and Ellie’s journey is. But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog’s internal high standards. As statements of delay go, this one is setting out a bullish case for the decision – the game will be delayed, it will be better, no need to thank us. However, it’s hard to begrudge Naughty Dog another five weeks on what looks like one of the most interesting AAA games of 2013, and a possible contender for the last great PS3 exclusive. As Satoru Iwata noted, a late game ceases to be late after a few years, whereas a bad game remains bad forever. (Gearbox, who have delivered a rapid patch for some of the problems recorded around Aliens: Colonial Marines since its release, may be hoping to upset this orthodoxy.) This is interesting to me in part because I spoke to Druckmann perhaps an hour before this announcement – reminding us once again of the unyielding timetables of this kind of revelation, and the implicit tensions between news management and disclosure. After a certain amount of delay – somewhere between BioShock Infinite and Duke Nukem Forever – a delayed game starts being described as “troubled”. But if Naughty Dog can stick to a June Release, they should be fine. Whether the game lives up to expectations is a far more important question. I hope to get hands-on shortly, and will report back. Infect me with a zombifying fungus on Twitter. Actually, please don’t. …read more

The Last of Us Delayed?

File it in the rumor column for now, but The Last of Us might be delayed. Best Buy has changed the game’s release date from May 7th to June 18th. GameStop and Amazon still list the post-apocalyptic, third-person action game for May.

A message to Sony for comment was not immediately returned.

It’s not unusual for retailers to change dates for upcoming games, but it’s usually reserved for when there’s just a placeholder date in there and it becomes clear that isn’t going to happen. Naughty Dog, the developer behind The Last of Us, has never delayed a game after publicly stating a release date. So this is either a monumental first or a colossal lie.

IGN‘ll update this story when when we know more.

The Last of Us: 3 Minutes of Spine-Tingling Gameplay

After watching these particular three minutes of gameplay of The Last of Us, which will be released on May 7, 2013, it doesn’t take long to see that the game company will be conquering the zombie apocalypse genre too.

The Last of Us Demo Bundled With God of War

Sony has announced that people who purchase God of War: Ascension will be granted first access to a demo of Naughty Dog‘s highly-anticipated The Last of Us.

Anyone who purchases Kratos’ latest adventure after it releases on March 12 in the States, March 13 in Europe or March 14 in Australia will be able to step into Joel and Ellie’s world for the first time.

Upon booting up God of War: Ascension, players will be greeted by a listing for The Last of Us on the title’s main menu. Selecting this will reveal how the free demo can be accessed as soon as it becomes available.

The demo won’t be available as soon as God of War: Ascension hits shelves, and it isn’t currently clear if it will later be made available to other PlayStation owners.

Ten Things You Need to Know About Monaco

When Richard Lemarchand, former lead designer at Naughty Dog, tweets that Monaco: What’s Yours is Mine is “every bit as awesome as you’d hoped” it’s worth stopping to take note. Lemarchand, now an associate professor of Interactive Media at USC, had nabbed a beta-key and, evidently, enjoyed the experience.
