By Joanne Camas The importance of a healthy diet is undeniable, with more and more evidence touting the benefits of the Mediterranean style of eating. Cookbook author Patricia Moore-Pastides has spent years working in public health and teaching good nutrition and wellness habits to young people, and now she’s taking her mission one step further with her new book, Greek Revival from the Garden: Growing and Cooking for Life. “It is a great book that teens and college-age students can use independently, families with young children can use together, and novices to gardening and cooking will enjoy at any age,” she told Epicurious. Moore-Pastides teaches healthy Mediterranean cooking classes for USC students, and also adults and children through a community program offered by the university’s Cancer Prevention and Control Program. “I wanted to write a book targeted to young adults to start them on a healthful lifestyle while they are still young.” She certainly has hands-on experience with both gardening and college life. “Five years ago my husband became president of the University of South Carolina, and I became the university’s First Lady,” she explained. “As such I do a lot of entertaining, to the tune of 200 events per academic year. I wanted to try to influence the community to enjoy more healthful food options, so I started an organic garden behind the President’s House. We started serving lots of plant-based options, and people have raved about the food.” The USC Press published her first cookbook, Greek Revival: Cooking for Life in 2010, and it’s now in its fifth printing. “As you know, research on the Mediterranean diet just keeps getting stronger,” she added. “It helps prevent heart disease and all the contributors to heart disease like high cholesterol; hypertension; inflammation; stroke; Alzheimers; breast, colon, and prostate cancers; arthritis; age-related blindness; birth defects; and childhood allergies and asthma. “The food preparation is simple and the flavors are wonderful, so we can be healthy, fit, and not at all deprived!” Moore-Pastides said. Check out sample recipes from Greek Revival from the Garden: Growing and Cooking for Life, which will be published by the USC Press in June. * Want to know more about the Mediterranean diet? The Long Beach Unified School District is suing a woman who falsely accused a former high school football star of rape in hopes of recovering legal fees and a $750,000 settlement paid to her.
The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported Thursday (http://bit.ly/16TjOrb) that the district alleged Wanetta Gibson committed contractual fraud in a lawsuit filed last November.
Gibson was 15 when she accused Brian Banks of attacking her on their high school campus. He insisted the sexual contact with Gibson was consensual, but pleaded no contest to forcible rape on the advice of his lawyer and spent more than five years in prison.
When he got out of prison, Gibson reached out to Banks on Facebook.
During an initial meeting with him, she said she had lied and offered to help him clear his record. But she refused to repeat the story to prosecutors because she feared she would have to return a settlement from a civil lawsuit brought by her mother against the school district.
During a second meeting that was secretly videotaped by a private investigator, she told Banks, “‘I will go through with helping you, but it’s like at the same time all that money they gave us, I mean gave me, I don’t want to have to pay it back.”
The tape ultimately led to Banks’ exoneration in May 2012.
The district is also trying to recoup about $1.9 million that was spent defending itself against Gibson, and is seeking another $1 million in punitive damages.
However, its lawyers apparently have been unable to locate her.
Banks, once a star middle linebacker at Long Beach Polytechnic High School, said he had verbally agreed to attend USC on a scholarship when he was arrested.
He recently signed a contract to play with the Atlanta Falcons and has become a spokesman for the California Innocence Project, which works to exonerate the wrongly accused.

LA Runner Kershaw Running the Boston Marathon
LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Courtney Kershaw, member of the LA Wealth Advisory Group at Raymond James, age 27, started running 5 years ago and is now running her 7th race – participating in the famous Boston Marathon on April 15th.

Lisa Detanna, team leader of the group states, “We are so very proud of our Courtney!” In addition to helping raise her extended family and working as lead administrative member of Wealth Advisory Group at Raymond James, Courtney still finds time to train and run over 35 miles a week like clockwork – with total dedication to her craft. “Courtney is truly amazing,” claims Detanna “and when focused on something, always achieves great things.”
Detanna has been a mentor to many young individuals, dating back to the Beverly Hills High School internship program that was accelerated during her time as Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce President. Two team members of the LA Wealth Advisory Group at Raymond James – Tim Kang and Brian Kim – started with Detanna as interns as well. Tim joined Detanna seven years ago while attending undergraduate school at UCLA and Brian Kim interned with Detanna and the LA Wealth Advisor team while at USC in 2011. Detanna believes mentoring young adults and watching them achieve great things helps her continue to grow as well. It gives her more energy, while forcing her to stay youthful and current on the newest gadgets. “I am so fortunate to be a part of my team members’ worlds and help and watch them actualize their dreams as they help me,” Detanna shares.
The Boston Marathon is very significant to women – as the first women runner Kathrine Switzer challenged the then all male event in 1967 where she finished the race in spite of a physical attack on her by a race official. The fact that Courtney and other women now compete in this sport and finish the race with very competitive times is wonderful.
Courtney’s last race was the 2013 LA Marathon where she completed the race in the top 15th percentile for both male and female. Courtney tells Detanna, “I run to remember my dad and to never give up on living. Running gives me a chance to start with a goal and to finish it… 26.2 miles later. A chance to push beyond my comfort zone and test my limits, to enter into a world to be in my own space, in my head and in my heart. It

We have had a lot of friends and family come to visit us since we moved to Los Angeles 8 years ago. When they ask us what there is to do in LA it’s hard to know where to start. There are stunning beaches, beautiful mountain ranges, museums, theatres, music venues, shopping, and incredible food. Some of our favorite Los Angeles landmarks are easy to get to and inexpensive or free like, the Getty Center in West Los Angeles or the California Science Center near the USC campus. No child ever says they’re bored because there are so many great things to do with kids in LA.

If every state in the Union was like North Dakota, the American economy would be growing as fast as China‘s. The state’s numbers were stunning, a promise, perhaps, for states that have new-found shale deposits. It is also a promise for economic prosperity in those states, if government regulators do not stand in the way – which they will.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration:
North Dakota crude oil production (including lease condensate) averaged an all-time high of 770,000 barrels per day in December 2012. Total annual production more than doubled between 2010 and 2012 through the use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing of deposits in the Bakken Formation in the Williston Basin. North Dakota production in 2012 trailed only Texas and the U.S. Federal Offshore region, and the state accounted for 10% of total U.S. crude oil production.
GDP per capita in the state must be off the charts, particularly because the state had the lowest unemployment of any state at 3.3% in January. North Dakota has only 699,628 residents, which places it 48th by that measure among all states. So, by a barrels per person ratio, no other state ever will match that. But that does not mean that shale will not help salvage a bumpy national economy.
Shale mania has triggered all sorts of claims about its potentially transformational power. One study recently release by University of Southern California (USC) showed that California, which had the worst unemployment of any state at 9.8% in January, tied with tiny Rhode Island, could have an unbelievable jump in prosperity if its Monterey Shale fields and smaller ones could be mined. The study forecast that the mining could:
1. Create more jobs. Developing oil from the Monterey Shale could add from 512,000 to 2.8 million new jobs in California, depending upon the year.
2. Stimulate economic growth. Total economic activity in the state, as measured by the state’s gross domestic product (GDP), could increase by 2.6% to 14.3% on a per – person basis.
3. Increase personal income. On a statewide basis, aggregate personal income could grow by an average of from 2.1% to 10.0%
4. Boost government revenue. Tax revenue collected by California state and local governments could grow by $4.5 billion to $24.6 billion.
It is too bad that California is not North Dakota. The state government in the nation’s largest state by population is unlikely to allow hundreds or thousands of fracking sites to be set up from Oregon to Mexico. That is the weakness of the USC forecast. What is acceptable based on North Dakota mining policy likely will be rejected in many other places.
Forecasts about the benefits of fracking take into account the bounty of the practice, but not the effects of regulation and public opinion. The U.S. Energy Information Administration information about North Dakota is correct. The USC forecast is improbable.
