2014 Mitsubishi Outlander

Filed under:

Mitsubishi will gladly sell you a 2014 Outlander ES for $22,995, excluding an $835 destination fee. Buyers can step up to the middle-tier Outlander SE for $23,795, or around $200 less than last year. That stack of cash will net you 18-inch aluminum wheels, a 6.1-inch LCD information display, dual-zone climate control and other goodies. Somewhat more impressively, Mitsubishi has cut the price tag for the Outlander GT by $800. That machine will run you $27,795, and throws in a more potent V6 engine, the company’s Super All-Wheel Control system and HID headlamps.

The 2014 Outlander bows with an all-new exterior design, and base models receive a 166-horsepowr 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with a continuously variable transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. That driveline is good for 24 miles per gallon city and 29 mpg highway. Check out the full pricing press release below and our own Jonathon Ramsey‘s first drive here.

Will Poor Sales Make This Electronic Giant's TVs Extinct?

By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

With global shipments of flat-screen LCD TVs falling in 2012 for the first time ever, it’s not surprising that Japanese consumer electronics giant Panasonic  is questioning whether it should remain in the business

Panasonic say that it’s staying put for the time being, but the toll of falling TV sales claimed one victim: The company’s chairman will resign his position ahead of schedule, as he takes responsibility for the company’s poor performance. The TV and gadget maker expects to record an $8.1 billion loss for the fiscal year when it reports earnings.

Blank screen
According to the market researchers at NPD DisplaySearch, shipments fell more than 6% last year, dropping from 249 million units, down to 233 million. Some think that may have been the bottom, and note that, in the U.S. at least, buyers tend to replace their sets every seven years. With the current crash having started around 2005, now is about the time for consumers to whip out their wallets again and start laying out some cash for new and bigger screens.

LCD screen maker Corning has been hurt just like every other industry supplier, but management believes 2013 will be an inflection point driven by an increase in retail sales of LCD televisions and demand for larger screen sizes. It forecasts that the LCD glass retail market in 2013 will rise by mid-to-high single digit rates, from 3.5 billion square feet in 2012.

This might be a lone voice of optimism, though, because Panasonic’s main Japanese rival Sony is still anticipating a bloodletting. Sony’s quarterly results indicated that TV sales plunged 25% in the quarter, and the company drastically revised downward the sales guidance it just gave in November. Although a large part of the revision has to do with a lack of anticipated sales for Blu-ray players, annual unit sales for LCD televisions has also been lowered.

For the time being, Panasonic will remain a small-screen player; but never say never. While it would be a last resort for the company to abandon the TV market, the company’s president says, “That possibility is not zero.”

We may have to look to 2014 before we can change the channel on this industry.

Bright lights, big city

With the explosive growth of smartphones worldwide, many investors thought they would ride Corning’s dominant cover glass to massive investment returns. That hasn’t played out yet, as mobile growth has failed to offset declines in the company’s core business. In this brand new premium research report on Corning, our analyst walks through the business, as well as the key opportunities and risks facing it today. Click here to claim your copy.

New York: 2014 Hyundai Equus gallops into New York with first major refresh

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

2014 Hyundai Equus

Filed under:

Hyundai isn’t horsing around with the Equus, its premium luxury sedan offering, for the 2014 model year. As stated in the automaker’s press release, “Equus is the number-one shopped premium luxury sedan, well ahead of Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Lexus LS, and Jaguar XJ.”

We’re not entirely certain what “number-one shopped” means, but regardless, that’s some serious company to be rubbing elbows with. Hyundai is seeking to draw even more people into its showrooms to cross-shop the Equus with those German, Japanese and British rivals by issuing the car’s first major update since it was debuted at the New York Auto Show in 2009.

Not a stone was left unturned in this comprehensive refresh, with the exterior, interior, powertrain and chassis all receiving updates for the new year. Most noticeably on the outside, the 2014 Equus gets a new fascia that includes a restyled grille, along with standard LED fog lamps. Inside, the changes are more drastic and include a brand-new instrument cluster and center stack to go along with “ultra-premium genuine wood trim.”

Drivers are sure to note the expanded technology inside, which includes either a 7- or 12.3-inch LCD screen in the instrument cluster and a 9.2-inch display in the center of the dash. Rear-seat passengers are treated to redesigned center console controls, plus power lumbar support and dual 9.2-inch monitors.

Hyundai claims to have improved both ride comfort and handling by rejiggering the suspension bits, and a Sport mode has been added. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are standard. The 5.0-liter direct-injected Tau V8 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission carry over from 2012, but with 429 naturally aspirated horsepower on tap, we don’t consider that a bad thing.

There’s plenty more detail to be found in the press release below, but first we suggest you scroll through our live image gallery above.

Review: Dell C1760nw color printer

We’ve spent a lot of electronic ink telling you to avoid low-cost color laser printers, because they’re all slow, with sparse features, and worst of all, really expensive toner. We’d almost advise the same about the $280 (as of March 25, 2013) Dell C1760nw color laser-class printer (it uses LED technology), but it has one thing going for it: impressive graphics quality, which is challenging to find on any office color laser printer at any price point. Choose this one above the rest, if you must, but you might also want to check out the faster, far more economical, office-class inkjets that we’ve seen from Epson and HP.

The C1760nw’s two-line LCD display and control buttons are minimal, but effective. The menu structure is nicely laid out, making options easy to find. A blue light directly above the controls indicates the status of Wi-Fi connections. You can also manage the printer via Wi-Fi or Ethernet using the unit’s HTML configuration interface. In addition to the PC and Mac drivers, the C1760nw offers remote-printing features, including printing from mobile devices and via email.

As with most low-cost color lasers, paper-handling features on the C1760nw are sparse. The front face folds down to create a 150-sheet, open-faced input tray on the bottom of the unit. A 10-page, removable bypass tray sits directly on top of it. The bypass tray allows you to print envelopes and other one-offs without unloading and reloading that main tray, as required with the single-tray C1660w. The output bin integrated into the top of the unit holds 100 sheets. The C1760nw lacks automatic two-side printing (duplexing), however, onscreen prompts walk you through the manual process. You can easily reach most of the paper path for clearing paper jams by folding down the panel on the back of the unit, and the toner cartridges are accessed via a panel on the right side of the unit.

Though cheaper than the C1660w’s, the C1760nw’s toner is still no bargain. The 3.5 cents you’ll pay per black page is around the average for entry-level inkjets, but the additional 5 cents for each additional color is high. Black toner is sold in $70, 2000-page units and the 1400-page cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges cost $70 each as well. Those are the high-capacity supplies. Dell also sells the 700-page cartridges the C1760nw ships with, but unless you want to pay over 7 cents per page (cpp) for black pages and over 8 cents per color, we recommend against them.

Planar Releases 3D BIM Models of LCD Displays and Video Walls through Autodesk Seek

Architects, engineers and designers can now easily integrate 3D BIM models of Planar displays into building plans

PORTLAND, Ore.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Today, Planar Systems, Inc. (NAS: PLNR) , a global leader in digital display technology, announced that 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM) models of select Planar large format LCD displays and video walls are now available free through the Autodesk® Seek web service.

Autodesk Seek allows architects, engineers and designers to easily find, preview and download 3D models of Planar displays. They can then incorporate these models into their building plans without having to create the models themselves. According to a report by McGraw-Hill Construction titled, “The Business Value of BIM in North America: Multi-Year Trend Analysis and User Ratings (2007-2012),” BIM adoption has grown 500% in the past years among AEC (Architect, Engineering, Construction) professionals and research indicates that up to 80% of firms have adopted BIM.

“The BIM process has transformed design and construction with its ability to improve project 3D design and team collaboration,” says Jennifer Davis, vice president of marketing for Planar Systems. “By offering our products as BIM ready objects, we make it easier for architects, engineers and designers to integrate Planar displays into their project designs right from the start.”

3D BIM models of three Planar product families are now available from the Autodesk Seek online content library, a web service that supplies free BIM models from a wide range of building product manufacturers. The models include Planar® Mosaic™ architectural video walls, Clarity™ Matrix LCD video walls and Planar® UltraLux™ Series large flat panel monitors. Each of these BIM models provides data-rich drawings and product specifications that accurately depict the displays and their options within Autodesk® Revit®, a market-leading 3D design platform.

While Planar has provided 2D CAD drawings of its products for years, it was time-consuming for designers to turn these 2D drawings into accurate 3D objects. With the 3D BIM models available on Autodesk Seek, building professionals can now download these models and easily plug them right into their overall project designs, speeding up their work and improving the quality of their project models.

Is Corning Still a Great Investment?

By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool

GLW Chart

Filed under:

It looks like one of those leaps in technology that puts you right in the middle of Tom Cruise’s “Minority Report” movie: glass so flexible you can roll it up and tuck it in your shirt pocket.

Corning unveiled the next-generation development last June and many believed it would drive innovation in completely new directions. A new Apple iWatch, for example, with a glass face that matched the curvature of your wrist, would be a perfect complement to the technology. Unfortunately, the glassmaker doused the enthusiasm with cold water last month, saying it might be as long as three years before consumer product manufacturers really adopted it as their own. There might still be a wristband in the works, but it’s not likely to feature the new flexible Willow glass.

The 800-pound gorilla
Up until now, investor focus has primarily been on Corning’s Gorilla Glass, the tough-as-nails glass that is featured on some 1.2 billion devices from 33 brands across 900 different products. And it will still be the centerpiece of the glassmaker’s immediate future as its third iteration proves to be the strongest yet. However, as the Fool’s tech guru Eric Bleeker notes, despite the incredible achievements Gorilla Glass has already delivered, because smartphones have such a small footprint, relatively speaking, even large-volume sales tend not to move the needle as much as you’d expect.

Were those billion GG devices all big screen, flat-panel TVs, Corning would likely have banked a heckuva lot more than the $1 billion in segment revenues it did in 2012. As it was, the LCD division saw revenues tumble 7.5%. Fortunately, that was offset by double-digit growth in Gorilla Glass as the specialty materials division’s revenues surged 25% over the year-ago period.

Hemlock society
What many investors might not realize is the collapse in polysilicon pricing that’s wreaking havoc in the solar industry is also taking its toll on Corning. The glassmaker’s Hemlock Semiconductor subsidiary produces polysilicon through a 50% joint venture with Dow Chemical and revenues at Dow Corning fell 5% last year. Worse, gross profits plunged 30% and net income lost three-quarters of its value.

As a result, its biggest moneymaker is failing to gain traction and its supplemental businesses are seeing profits plummet, leading Corning’s shares to essentially flatline over the past year.

Source: GLW data by YCharts.

Despite the challenges, though, Corning’s future still looks crystal clear. Yes, the solar industry is covered by storm clouds and Corning has taken some writedowns related to Hemlock — and may do so again this year — but the rest of the business is shaping up as a strong competitor. Even in the LCD glass division, “less bad” results really mean things are getting better.

Corning predicts LCD glass volume will grow in 2013; telecom sales of fiber optic cable are expected to advance; Gorilla Glass will swing from the trees as smartphones and tablets continue to fly off the shelves; heavy-duty diesel …read more

Mr. Sculley continued, “We have continued to experience some delays caused by the repairs and modifications to our new OLED deposition tool. Demand for our products remains strong. We have recently completed repairs on the new OLED deposition tool, and it is now operating at a higher pace than the Company’s existing OLED deposition machine. We will continue to optimize the new tool up to its full potential and we remain confident that the greater capacity and production efficiencies to be gained from the new machine will enable us to better address our key markets, which involve a range of military, commercial, industrial, medical, and consumer applications.”

Quarterly Results

Revenues for the fourth quarter were $8.3 million versus $8.0 million for the comparable period in 2011. Gross margin for the fourth quarter was 49% of revenue on gross profit of $4.1 million, compared to a gross margin of 49% the prior quarter and for the full year 2012. Gross margin for fourth quarter 2011 was 65% of revenue. The year-over-year decrease in gross margin was mainly attributable to higher costs for production, depreciation and labor as well as a lower average selling price.

Research and development expenses for the fourth quarter of 2012 were 14% of revenue compared to 12% for the prior year period due primarily to the development of the new digital SVGA microdisplay.

Foxconn still in talks for Sharp stake, despite Samsung deal

Taiwan’s Foxconn Technology Group said it was still negotiating a deal for greater cooperation with Sharp, despite the Japanese display maker securing a $110 million investment to supply LCD panels to rival Samsung Electronics.

Sharp’s agreement with Samsung was no surprise to Foxconn, which had received prior notification of it, said the company’s parent Hon Hai Precision Industry in a statement on Wednesday. “We thank Sharp for treating our bilateral relations with respect,” it added.

The company declined to comment on the Samsung deal itself, but said talks to deepen relations between Foxconn and Sharp continue. It added that a deal made last year for Foxconn and Sharp to operate a factory together in Japan is producing “fruitful results.”

The Taiwanese manufacturing giant, best known as the assembler of Apple’s iPhone, was expected to secure a 10 percent stake in Sharp last year for $800 million. But so far, the two companies have failed to reach an agreement after Sharp saw its stock price plummet as a result of its ongoing financial woes.

Wednesday's Top Upgrades (and Downgrades)

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

This series, brought to you by Yahoo! Finance, looks at which upgrades and downgrades make sense, and which ones investors should act on. Today, our headlines include downgrades for defense contractors AeroVironment and Harris Corp . Meanwhile, though…

LCD specialist Cree lights up the scoreboards
Great news for Cree shareholders this morning: Wall Street likes your stock again. In twin announcements Tuesday, Cree confirmed that it’s going to begin selling a new LED lightbulb, exclusively through Home Depot, and for the low, low price of less than $10. Even better, Cree’s so convinced this product will be a success that it’s upped its revenue guidance for the fiscal third quarter (that’s the one we’re in now) to a new range of from $335 million to $350 million — and on stable gross margins of perhaps 39.5%.

Wall Street loves the news, with Credit Agricole upping its rating from underperform to outperform in a Paris minute yesterday, and Goldman Sachs praising the company’s new “price points as very competitive” and hiking its own price target for Cree stock to $48. This morning, a third analyst joined the Cree fan club, as UBS went a step further and projected Cree shares will hit $51 before a year is out.

Are they right? Well, let’s see here. According to StreetInsider.com, Cree thinks it can earn between $0.16 and $0.21 per share this quarter ($0.31 to $0.36 pro forma). If it’s right, that would work out to at least a double in GAAP profit over last year’s Q3 levels, and perhaps an increase of 162%. Even pro forma, the growth rate would exceed 50%. Either way, that’s a whole heck of a lot faster than the 37% earnings growth Wall Street has Cree pegged for this year, and suggests there’s reason for the analysts’ optimism.

Granted, at 108 times earnings, Cree shares don’t look like much of a bargain on the surface. But if you value the company on its remarkably strong (four times GAAP earnings) free cash flow, and credit it for its strong cash reserves ($886 million, with no debt in evidence), the stock actually looks pretty fairly priced at 20% projected growth, and an enterprise value-to-free-cash-flow ratio of just 19.4. In short, I wouldn’t short Cree on this rally. This stock‘s not nearly as expensive as it looks.

AeroVironment crashes and burns
If only I could say the same for small unmanned aerial vehicle specialist AeroVironment, which yesterday missed earnings badly, then compounded the fumble with a prediction hat fiscal 2013 earnings will come in at just $0.42 a share — down from earlier projections of $1.43. The news prompted an immediate cut in price target by FBR Capital, which slashed expectations by nearly half, and said AV investors will be lucky if their shares are worth even $19 a year from now. BB&T Capital seconded the emotion, pulling its buy rating and downgrading AV to “hold.”

But is the news …read more

Can Apple Afford to Wait On a Larger iPhone?

By Evan Niu, CFA, CFA, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

There are two things that Apple needs to do in order to satisfy investors craving continued iPhone growth: launch a mid-range iPhone as well as a larger iPhone. The company has waited much longer to expand the iPhone into a broader product family than it has with other devices like the iPod and iPad, and this expansion is now overdue.

Numerous reports have now speculated that while Apple is indeed planning to launch a more affordable model this year, the larger one may not see the light of day until next year. Can Apple afford to wait?

Wait for it
Yesterday, Japanese blog Macotakara reported that the mid-range iPhone made out of polycarbonate is still on track for a 2013 launch, and will retail for $330 — the same starting price point as the iPad Mini. The polycarbonate model will likely be thicker to increase durability and save costs.

Following that report, Chinese site EMSOne separately speculated that the more affordable iPhone would launch in August alongside the iPhone 5S that will feature incremental upgrades in line with the tick-tock strategy that Apple repurposed from Intel. Only the flagship iPhone 5S is said to include compatibility with China Mobile‘s unique network and the mid-range model will not be supported on the largest wireless carrier in the world. There’s notably no mention of a larger iPhone.

These rumblings corroborate with the 2013 product roadmap that KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo laid out in January. The analyst adds that the flagship should see the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor to increase security and leverage Apple’s $356 million acquisition of AuthenTec last year. Kuo has a solid track record with accuracy, so his predictions carry more weight than others’.

It just so happens that Jefferies analyst Peter Misek also released a research note in February saying that Apple has been running into manufacturing challenges in scaling up its display size from 4-inch to 4.8-inch. This is because Apple recently adopted the relatively new in-cell touch technology in its displays that integrates the touch sensors directly into the LCD panel in order to make the iPhone so thin.

Yields on the larger in-cell panels are proving to be low and Apple has extremely high quality standards. The difficulties are compounded since Apple also has very high volume requirements due to the popularity of its devices. An alternative would be to switch back to on-cell displays or other technologies with better yields. Either way, Misek similarly thinks the larger iPhone is being pushed out to 2014.

Long live the Phablet King
The phablet trend is getting stronger with no signs of abating, at least among OEMs. Not one to be shown up, Samsung’s latest attempt at overcompensation is the Galaxy Note 8.0 that features an 8-inch display.

The South Korean conglomerate was at risk of losing its title as the Phablet King when Huawei unveiled its 6.1-inch Ascend Mate, topping the …read more

This Just In: Upgrades and Downgrades

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

At The Motley Fool, we poke plenty of fun at Wall Street analysts and their endless cycle of upgrades, downgrades, and “initiating coverage at neutral.” Today, we’ll show you whether those bigwigs actually know what they’re talking about. To help, we’ve enlisted Motley Fool CAPS to track the long-term performance of Wall Street‘s best and worst.

And speaking of the best …
Corning got a big boost Thursday, when ace stockpicker Bernstein announced it was initiating coverage of the LCD glassmaker at an outperform rating. Slapping a $15.20 price target on the stock, Bernstein promised investors at today’s prices the chance to earn a 21.4% profit on the shares themselves, and the practical guarantee of collecting Corning’s 2.9% dividend yield, as they wait for the shares to go up.

So, in total, a better than 24% profit in just 12 months of investing. Not a bad return … if Bernstein turns out to be correct. But is the analyst right about this one?

Let’s go to the tape
At first glance, indications look good. According to our CAPS stats, Bernstein is one of the better analysts out there today, ranking in the top 10% of investors we track, getting most of its stock picks right — and beating the market by an average of seven percentage points-per-pick.

Bernstein’s also got good reason to be recommending Corning. The company that invented the glass for Thomas Edison‘s light bulb, that dominates the market for glass used in LCD TVs and monitors, and whose “Gorilla Glass” product forms the screens of most of the world’s higher-end smartphones, recently announced a new flexible LCD glass that it’s calling “Willow” (because, you see, it bends).

According to Corning, no one in the industry has yet invented a product to take advantage of Willow Glass‘s unique property. But that’s the kind of thing that can change in a hurry in the tech world.

For example, manufacturers such as Samsung have encountered difficulties  designing around Apple‘s “rounded rectangle” design patent for the iPad. Now, imagine if you will, a “tablet” computer that’s not a rectangular tablet at all — but, perhaps, a cylinder shaped more like a rolling pin. Instead of swiping to scroll the screen up or down, you simply rotate your cylinder clockwise or counterclockwise to move up or down the screen. That’s the kind of innovation that flexible Willow Glass might make possible. Similar innovations might come out of Google , now that it’s in the computer hardware-making biz. Its recent interest in wearable computers, for example, might lend itself to a portable device that slides over the wrist, like an armband — again, an innovation that Willow could make possible.

Faster than the speed of tech
How quickly might Willow catch on? Consider this: Back in 2009, when Corning was still “boasting” of having just seven manufacturers starting to experiment with its Gorilla Glass, management predicted that, within a few …read more

Review: Dell C1660w color printer

The superlow $200 price (as of February 21, 2013) for the Dell C1660w makes color-laser-class printing (using laserlike LED technology)
tantalizingly accessible. Its text output looks great, and the color graphics are very nice indeed. Because the toner is expensive, however,

the C1660w would be a good deal only if you didn’t print much

(as we discovered when we compared inkjet pricing last year). The printer’s modest speed and features reflect the intended, light-volume audience.

Setting up the C1660w couldn’t be easier. The small footprint means it can be used virtually anywhere. USB and Wi-Fi connectivity are standard. We used the
manual Wi-Fi setup, but there’s support for WPS as well. A blue Wi-Fi indicator notifies you that the unit is connected wirelessly. The tiny two-line LCD
display and control buttons are minimal, but effective. The software is spare, but you can surf from anywhere on your network to the printer’s
configuration pages to check status and see if you need more toner. There’s also the full gamut of remote printing features, including printing from mobile
devices and via email.

Paper handling features on the C1660w are minimal. A front panel flips out onto your work surface to make the bottom of the 150-sheet input tray; a cover
piece is included. The classic, indented output bin on the top holds 100 sheets. There’s no automatic two-side printing (duplexing), but there is manual
support for the process in the form of dialogs telling you how to reinsert the paper. Having an open-faced paper tray makes this process significantly
easier. You can easily reach most of the paper path by folding down the panel on the back of the unit. Toner cartridges are accessed via a panel on the
right side of the unit.

Probably the least appealing aspect of the C1660w is its pricey toner. The unit ships with 500-page starter cartridges. The 4 cents you’ll pay per black
page is a little higher than the average for entry-level inkjets, and the additional 16.8 cents that adding color to the average page costs is pricey
indeed. Black toner is sold in $50, 1250-page units; the 1000-page cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges cost $56 each. There are, unfortunately, no
high-capacity supplies.
