Volkswagen Will Bring the Phaeton Back to America—Just Not for Another Two Years

By Jens Meiners

The next generation of the Volkswagen Phaeton will, in fact, be offered in the U.S., but don’t expect it to be unveiled any time soon. There is no substance to rumors that it will be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit auto show, company sources have told Car and Driver. Look instead for a debut late in 2014 or 2015, likely at a European or Chinese auto show, before coming to market as a 2016 model. There is no urgency on VW’s part to replace the venerable luxury sedan.

The original Phaeton, a pet project of Ferdinand Piëch that was launched in 2002, has not performed well in North America—or anywhere else, for that matter. It was yanked from American VW dealers after the 2006 model by former VW CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder as part of his power struggle with Piëch, who heads the supervisory board. However, a company insider tell us that the discontinuation of VW’s S-class–fighter was “one of the smartest decisions ever,” adding, “We couldn’t give them away.”

The Dresden-built luxo-cruiser serves as the technical basis for Bentley’s Continental GT and Flying Spur, actually surpassing both in several aspects when it comes to attention to detail. Despite that enormous technological merit, the Phaeton has been let down by Volkswagen’s image—it’s awfully tough to sell the uninitiated on a $93,000 VW, even if it does have chops good enough for Bentley.

The second generation of the Phaeton is being developed to make use of the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform, which is loosely shared with the Audi A8, and will return to American showrooms. Our intelligence suggests that the new Phaeton will be powered by a choice of a turbocharged VR6, a turbocharged V-8, a V-6 turbo-diesel, and potentially a hybrid in some form. Unfortunately, we hear there’s very little chance that the Group’s famous W-12 has a future in the Phaeton. Even if engineered to perfection, as we fully expect the next Phaeton to be, it won’t be quite the same without four banks of cylinders providing seemingly endless thrust for the most luxurious VW-badged ride imaginable.

Report: VW Phaeton coming back to US, could be revealed in Detroit

By Seyth Miersma

Filed under:

Since its ignominious departure from the US car market in 2006, there have been any number of on-again/off-again rumors about the Volkswagen Phaeton returning to our shores. With that said, VW’s aggressive goals in terms of worldwide sales dominance would seem to countenance all manner of new product; taking a second stab at a halo-luxury car for the US, included.

At least that’s the gist of a new report from Bloomberg, which dangles the idea of a new Phaeton potentially being “shown to US consumers in January,” or just in time for the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

Short on specifics and citations, the Bloomberg report seems to rely on the expansionist behavior of VW as a whole over the last few years, and a few statements of positivity from VW CEO Martin Winterkorn. The publication quotes Winterkorn as saying, “A brand as large as Volkswagen needs a halo project in the upscale segment.” Bloomberg also states that Winterkorn was “confirming” the Phaeton’s return to the US.

The supposedly Detroit-bound Phaeton demonstrator could come in concept form, as a way of better judging public reaction to the reintroduction of the sedan. Pending a greenlight, the next-gen Phaeton is likely to share architecture with the Audi A8, with the potential good for a hybrid version, as well.

2013 Audi A8L 4.0T Tested: For All Your Nasty Bovine-Lovin’ Needs

By Tony Quiroga

Whether you walk into a bar and order a double, or double down at the blackjack table, or, for those opposed to vice, play a friendly game of mixed doubles tennis, doubling is a call to action. It’s a catalyst for excitement and proof that you’re packing more into your day. Why else would there be racing roller coasters or double-barrel shotguns? Doubling works in cars, too. Think of the Audi A8’s new 4.0-liter V-8 as a double dose of Audi’s spectacular 2.0-liter turbo four. Two 211-hp turbo fours fused into one 420-hp twin-turbo V-8 make for a very quick A8L. Report: Jaguar planning two bodystyles for next XJ

By Chris Paukert

2014 Jaguar XJR

Filed under:

As we alluded to in today’s F-Type first drive, Jaguar hasn’t been selling its wares in China for very long, and as a result, buyers there usually don’t have the same appreciation for the brand’s history. So you might reasonably think that the company’s recent radical styling shift (kicked off by the 2008 XF) wouldn’t be as jarring to the nation’s buying populace since they really didn’t have the automaker’s more traditionally styled models from years past to compare them against.

Yet while Jaguar and its sister marque, Land Rover, continue to pick up steam in China‘s developing market, that apparently isn’t necessarily the case. Local buyers there tend to have more conservative tastes when it comes to styling, preferring more upright dimensions, big back seats and larger quantities of traditional luxury materials (think: chrome and wood) than other markets currently find desirable. Thus, the very bold current-generation XJ sedan may be leaving some sales on the table.

According to Edmunds, Jag doesn’t want to risk that, and as such, it is preparing two bodystyles for the next-generation XJ – one with the rakish coupe-like styling of the current model, and a more “old-school” three-box sedan designed to appeal to a wider swath of Chinese buyers.

Given that Jaguar’s small size means that nearly every model it generates must play worldwide today (with exceptions made for variants like the XF Sportbrake, which hasn’t been engineered to global crash standards), it’s reasonable to question whether Jag might offer both XJ bodystyles here in North America – perhaps in a tiered scheme like the Audi A8 and A7. That strategy might catch more profits for the marque, but it might also represent a setback to design head Ian Callum‘s vision for a thoroughly modern Jaguar portfolio.

A Brand New Tesla for $500 a Month with No Money Down? Well, Sort of

By Mark Rogowsky, Contributor

This is the sixth part in an ongoing series on electric vehicles, with a focus on Tesla Motors. See below for links to the rest of the series. After announcing it’s first-ever profit Sunday, Tesla Motors took a step toward revving up sales of its electric vehicle even further. The company announced a financing program that combines some of the best elements of buying and leasing and allows you to drive off the lot in a brand new Tesla Sedan with no down payment (sort of) and a monthly payment that’s under what a competitive luxury vehicle (think Audi A8 or Mercedes S550) would lease for. Tesla even goes as far as saying the “Effective Monthly Cost” might be under $500. Realistically, the offer isn’t quite that good, but it’s going to broaden Tesla’s appeal nevertheless. …read more

New York: 2014 Hyundai Equus gallops into New York with first major refresh

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

2014 Hyundai Equus

Filed under:

Hyundai isn’t horsing around with the Equus, its premium luxury sedan offering, for the 2014 model year. As stated in the automaker’s press release, “Equus is the number-one shopped premium luxury sedan, well ahead of Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Lexus LS, and Jaguar XJ.”

We’re not entirely certain what “number-one shopped” means, but regardless, that’s some serious company to be rubbing elbows with. Hyundai is seeking to draw even more people into its showrooms to cross-shop the Equus with those German, Japanese and British rivals by issuing the car’s first major update since it was debuted at the New York Auto Show in 2009.

Not a stone was left unturned in this comprehensive refresh, with the exterior, interior, powertrain and chassis all receiving updates for the new year. Most noticeably on the outside, the 2014 Equus gets a new fascia that includes a restyled grille, along with standard LED fog lamps. Inside, the changes are more drastic and include a brand-new instrument cluster and center stack to go along with “ultra-premium genuine wood trim.”

Drivers are sure to note the expanded technology inside, which includes either a 7- or 12.3-inch LCD screen in the instrument cluster and a 9.2-inch display in the center of the dash. Rear-seat passengers are treated to redesigned center console controls, plus power lumbar support and dual 9.2-inch monitors.

Hyundai claims to have improved both ride comfort and handling by rejiggering the suspension bits, and a Sport mode has been added. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels are standard. The 5.0-liter direct-injected Tau V8 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission carry over from 2012, but with 429 naturally aspirated horsepower on tap, we don’t consider that a bad thing.

There’s plenty more detail to be found in the press release below, but first we suggest you scroll through our live image gallery above.

2014 Range Rover to Replace Naturally Aspirated V-8 with Familial Supercharged V-6

By Jens Meiners

Just a few weeks ago, we found ourselves largely agreeing with Land Rover’s description of the 2013 Range Rover‘s 5.0-liter V-8: According to the press release, it provides “a compelling combination of smooth, responsive performance and immaculate refinement.” Apart from the flowery style, we couldn’t have put it better. But alas, a year after the launch of the new Range Rover, the 375-hp, naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 is history. As the 2013 models are just about spoken for, Land Rover is gearing up to take orders for the 2014 model year. Henceforth, the entry-level engine will be a 340-hp, supercharged 3.0-liter V-6.

The new six-cylinder will be the same mill available in the Jaguar lineup, altered slightly for service in the SUV. The decision to downsize doesn’t only mean less power, but also less torque—down from 375 lb-ft to the realm of 332 lb-ft. Despite losing 35 horsepower and 43 lb-ft, the V-6–powered Range Rover shouldn’t feel any more lethargic than the eight-cylinder it replaces thanks to the immediacy of the six’s supercharger. Land Rover says sprints from standstill to 60 mph will take 7.1 seconds (six-tenths slower than the outgoing V-8), and top speed will remain a governed 130 mph—a velocity at which the Range Rover proves itself as an extremely well-balanced and stable high-speed cruiser.

The real gains to be had in this change in offerings come down to fuel economy. The EPA estimates that Jaguar Land Rover’s supercharged V-6 will be good for 16 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway when mounted in the Range. That’s about a 10-percent improvement over the now-deceased V-8′s marks of 14/20. In addition, the reduced weight on the front axle will make the Range Rover a more agile and willing companion on twisty roads.

The new entry-level Range Rover is just the latest example of the trend toward downsized, super- and turbocharged engines in the high-end luxury segment. And if you think the downsizing fad is bad Stateside, have a look at the offerings elsewhere: In Europe, the Mercedes-Benz S-class is available with a four-cylinder diesel, China gets a Jaguar XJ with a turbo four, and the Audi A8 hybrid—aimed at both Europe and China—comes with a 2.0-liter four-banger paired with an electric motor. Our advice is to enjoy the six-cylinders as long as they last.
