French fries' oil content: It's lower with infrared heat

French fries typically soak up a lot of oil while they’re in the deep-fat fryer. But U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientist Zhongli Pan and his colleagues have shown that prepping the raw fries for three minutes with infrared (IR) heat, before the fries are dunked in the fryer, can reduce oil uptake by about one-third, as compared to raw fries not treated with IR. …read more

WIND and motion sensor security lighting ??

By YaddaYadda

I wanted to install a security light with a motion sensor, outside, near our bedroom slider. There are trees and shrubs close by. My past limited experience is that wind blowing branches/limbs will keep the lights on and off all night. Don’t want this.

I have read about dual technology sensors, IR and microwave together, that will supposedly activate only when a human or critter walks by. Heath/Zenith told me that their sensors are PIR only and that blowing branches, etc. will not set the light off. (I dunno).

Can someone give me the real skinny, please. I think I will have to buy a quality light/sensor to get the result we seek. Thanks.

UFO Over Taipei National Palace Museum On March 24, 2013.

By ScottCWaring

Date of sighting: March 24, 2013
Location of sighting: Taipei, Taiwan
Note: Taiwan is 12 hours ahead of USA in time. March 24 here may be March 23 in USA.
I was watching the live cam of Taipei City, Taiwan when I noticed this orb-like object over the building. The location of the museum is at the top of a mountain and behind the UFO is the forest part of the mountain. The structure it’s over is the National Palace Museum. The camera is not black and white, but infrared, which means it can see outside the spectrum of the human eye. That means it was probably cloaked since its in a city of 2.6 million people, but the IR camera revealed its presence. This cam only takes still photos and not live video so I could not see how it moved. Museums are frequented by aliens because they hold our cultural artifacts that shows our history and how we appreciate and value it. SCW

Pulse Electronics’ EP13 Plus DC/DC Transformer Platform Provides >25% More Power Handling Capability

Catalog Series of Transformer Topologies in Industry Standard Package

SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Pulse Electronics Corporation (NYS: PULS) , a leading provider of electronic components, announces its new EP13 Plus platform that delivers 25% more power handling capability than the industry standard EP13 platform in the same PCB footprint. This catalog series of 12 isolation transformers is designed for multiple input voltage ranges (9-57v and 33-57v) and can provide six different output voltage combinations from 3.3v to 24v. The transformers are used in DC/DC power supplies for Power over Ethernet (PoE, PoE+), datacom, telecom, and industrial applications.

Pulse’s EP13 Plus platform incorporates two innovative features that advance the wire-wound transformer technology. The first innovation is the use of a modified core with an increased cross-sectional area to reduce the number of turns necessary for a given output voltage, or to increase the output power by better utilization of the available winding window. The second innovation is a new bobbin lead shape which allows for an increased number of lead wire terminations. This helps avoid damaging the leads or causing solder bridges to adjacent leads during IR reflow. Optimization of the magnetic core combined with the modified lead design of the winding termination give the EP13 Plus 25% more power throughput and lower winding resistance.

Pulse Electronics‘ EP13 Plus series transformers are designed for either active clamp forward (PA3856.XXXNL) or continuous mode flyback (PA3855.XXXNL) topologies and offer 24 different output voltage and power combinations. The transformers come in an industry standard package of 14.0(h)x17.7(l) mm. The EP13 Plus series is used in a wide variety of electronic applications including wireless base stations, IP phones, security cameras, automation and test equipment, and networking gear.

“The innovative design approach for the new Pulse EP13 Plus platform offers designers the flexibility to create a more efficient design (less power loss) at the same power as the industry platform, or the ability to increase system power density or lower thermal loads in existing designs. In a market where power density and system efficiency are crucial, this is a significant improvement,” said John Gallagher, staff field applications engineer, Pulse Electronics.

IR’s High Current IR3847 Gen3 SupIRBuck ® Delivers Superior Performance, Dramatically Reduces PCB Size by 70% and Simplifies Design

Best-in-class voltage regulator for high performance communications and computing applications

EL SEGUNDO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– International Rectifier, IR® (NYS: IRF) , a world leader in power management technology, today announced the introduction of the IR3847 high current Point-of-Load (POL) integrated voltage regulator that extends the current rating of IR‘s third generation SupIRBuck® family up to 25A in a compact 5×6 mm package.

As a result of a new thermally enhanced package using copper clip and several proprietary innovations in the controller, the IR3847 can operate at 25A without heatsink, and reduces PCB size by 20% compared to alternative integrated solutions and 70% compared to discrete solutions using a controller and power MOSFETs. A complete 25A power supply solution can be implemented in as little as 168mm2.

The new device integrates IR‘s latest generation power MOSFETs with a feature-rich, third generation SupIRBuck® controller that includes post-package precision dead-time trimming to optimize losses, and internal smart LDO to optimize efficiency across the entire load range. True differential remote sense essential for high current applications, 0.5% reference voltage accuracy in 25°C to 105°C temperature range, input feed-forward and ultra-low jitter combine to enable total output voltage accuracy less than 3% over line, load, and temperature, as required by high performance communications and computing systems.

As part of the new Gen3 SupIRBuck single input voltage (5V-21V) family, the IR3847 features a proprietary modulator scheme that reduces jitter by 90% compared to standard solutions. This has the dual benefit of reducing output voltage ripple by approximately 30% and allowing higher frequency/higher bandwidth operation for smaller size, better transient response and fewer output capacitors.

Available in a compact 5x6mm PQFN package, the IR3847 also offers market-leading electrical and thermal performance for 15A – 25A applications such as peak efficiency greater than 96% and temperature rise at 25A as low as 50°C. Other advanced features include external synchronization, sequencing, VTT tracking, and output voltage margining.

The pinout is optimized for easy placement of bypass capacitors and the internal thermally compensated current limit offers three settings that allow programmability without extra components and layout complications.

“With the new high current IR3847 with true differential remote sense, IR addresses the challenges of thermally- and space-constrained high density, high current applications by enabling a fully integrated solution up to …read more

Profit From Wall Street Analysts' Blind Spot

By Dan Dzombak, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

A few months ago, some Harvard Business School professors came out with a study on what factors drive analyst buy recommendations. Read on, and I’ll explain the problem with analyst recommendations, what the professors found, and how you can profit from all this.

Wall Street recommendations
Wall Street analysts have a variety of conflicts of interests and are far too positive; as such, their recommendations are known to not be that useful. Being negative is hard for analysts, as there really is no incentive for them to be negative. Negative reports don’t get people excited, don’t drive much business, and often management teams will stop speaking with analysts who are negative. Also, if an analyst makes a small error in a negative report, investor relations departments are not forgiving, whereas in a positive report, IR departments are much more forgiving of small errors.

With no incentive to write negative reports on companies, only 6% of U.S. analyst recommendations are sells. Internationally, the number is slightly higher, with an average of 9% of recommendations as sells around the world.

Top factors
Given their overly positive bent, what do you think would be analysts’ top factors?

Take a moment to think about it…

The results, which are organized by the location of the analysts, are interesting both for what analysts found very important and what they found least important.

Very important
Analysts called out projected industry growth and quality of top management as factors they consider to be very important. While it is good to hear that analysts find management extremely important, it is worrisome that projected industry growth is the other most important factor to them.

Studies have shown that analysts are terrible at estimating growth in both the short and long term, consistently overestimating growth. A study that looked at analyst estimates from 1984 to 2006 by Patrick Cusatis and J. Randall Woolridge of Pennsylvania State University found …read more

Iran says it has 3,000 advanced centrifuges

Iran‘s nuclear chief says his country has produced more than 3,000 advanced centrifuges which are used to enrich uranium.

The semiofficial Fars news agency on Sunday quoted Fereidoun Abbasi as saying that the old generation of IR-1 centrifuges will be phased out soon. Iran has more than 12,000 IR-1 centrifuges enriching uranium at its main Natanz uranium enrichment facility in central Iran.

Abbasi said last month that Iran has begun installing the newer IR-2 centrifuges, which can produce more enriched uranium in a shorter period of time. He says the production line of the new, advanced centrifuges has been completed, but he did not elaborate.

The U.S. and its allies fear that Iran may eventually be able to develop a nuclear weapon, a charge Tehran denies.
