Future Assassin’s Creed in Development in Toronto

Splinter Cell: Blacklist developer Ubisoft Toronto will take on five projects, including a future Assassin’s Creed game.

“As we’re wrapping up Splinter Cell, we’re also looking to expanding, so we’re going to be working on five different projects,” Ubisoft Toronto managing director Jade Raymond told IGN. “One of the franchises that’s very near and dear to me, Assassin’s Creed, is one of the ones we’re going to be collaborating on in Toronto, as well as one other big franchise which we’re not going to announce yet. But we’re going to be doing two other big collaborations also with Montreal.”

We asked Raymond if she was referring to Assassin’s Creed IV, and she clarified that Toronto’s project is “not Black Flag because we’re currently shipping. So an upcoming Assassin’s Creed.”

PETA Attacks Assassin's Creed 4 For Including Whaling

By Dave Thier, Contributor

PETA is at it again, and they’re getting a little quicker. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have come out against video games before – lambasting Mario for wearing raccoon skin and criticizing Pokemon for encouraging the enslavement of animals – and now they’re hitting Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag just a few days after its reveal. The issue? Early screenshots confirmed whaling, and PETA doesn’t like that. The organization said in statement provided to Venturebeat: …read more

The First Set of Screenshots for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag

By Dave Thier, Contributor

If you were disappointed by Assassin’s Creed IV’s all-CGI debut trailer, there’s a few screenshots that leaked out yesterday that offer a better look at what the game will actually look like. It’s still not the same as seeing gameplay in motion – screenshots can be edited to make a game look however the developer wants – but there’s a few tantalizing notions contained within. …read more

Female Lead in Future Assassin's Creed "Wouldn't Be Surprising"

After the announcement of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, with its fascinating new setting, size, and Far Cry-esque exploration, I couldn’t help but wonder one thing:

Another dude? Really?

I asked Black Flag‘s director, Ashraf Ismail, why we’ve only seen men in the leading roles of mainline Assassin’s Creed games. “It’s a bit of a tough question,” he told IGN.

“Really early on, we decided to tell the story of the Kenways. So we already had in place the idea to tell Edward, Haytham, and Connor. This was actually years ago, we had this,” Ismail explained. So in the grand scheme of the Assassin’s Creed III and Black Flag era, “we actually never thought, ‘could this be a woman?'”

The Dawn of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Assassin’s Creed seems to enjoy operating without limits. The franchise has always dreamed big and attempted to deliver even bigger, and if the series has one blatant weakness, it’s that its annual ambitions exceed what consoles are realistically able to produce. Its grand designs have left modern hardware behind, and the series remains shackled – alongside a few lingering design shortcomings that continue to appear. Yet as one of the most compelling modern franchise concepts, it’s hard not to be excited by whatever new era Ubisoft’s global studios are able to conjure up. The question, then, becomes this: can the Assassin’s Creed franchise balance its desire to move into yet another new era with its need to acknowledge its inherent strengths and weaknesses? After five installments, is ambition enough to keep this modern blockbuster relevant as we begin to move into a new generation of technology?

Why Assassin's Creed Will Outlive Us All

By Paul Tassi

Yesterday, Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, the newest installment in the series which has already spawned five full-length console/PC games in addition to DLC and mobile titles. It’s obvious the series has legs, but what’s becoming clear is that it actually could continue on indefinitely, and that’s not something many titles, even popular ones, can claim. …read more

Black Flag And The Reality Of Band Reunions

By Leor Galil, Contributor Last week iconic L.A. hardcore-punk band Black Flag announced it would reunite–twice over. Early last Friday metal blog Invisible Oranges broke the news that Black Flag founding member and guitarist Greg Ginn would reunite his band to perform at Hevy Fest in the U.K., and a short time later Pitchfork announced that another iteration of that group would begin touring as “Flag.” The New York Times’ “Arts Beat” has the breakdown on who is involved in Ginn’s Black Flag and who is playing in Flag: Black Flag’s latest configuration will employ Ron Reyes as the lead singer and Gregory Moore on drums, Mr. Ginn announced. Mr. Reyes was the lead singer for the band for about a year in the late 1970s; Mr. Moore collaborated with Mr. Ginn in the 1980s in another band, Gone.
