Can Brooklyn Nets Wrestle New York From Knicks With Record $180 Million Team?

The Brooklyn Nets shocked the NBA last month when the team swung a trade with the Boston Celtics to acquire Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Jason Terry. The trio arrives in New York with championship rings, 25 combined All-Star game appearances, MVP and Sixth Man of the Year awards, as well as countless other accolades. The group was introduced Thursday at a press conference at the Barclays Center. Nets’ owner Mikhail Prokhorov made a surprise appearance after jetting in from Moscow and he made it clear what his expectations are. “I will [only] be proud when we win the championship,” Prokhorov said. “For me there is only one place: First place.” …read more

Notebook: Nets 103, Pistons 99

THE FACTS: The Nets’ starters played like they were already in postseason form, leading the Nets to a 103-99 victory over the Pistons at Barclays Center. Brook Lopez scored 20 points and snatched nine rebounds. Gerald Wallace, who led the Nets with 26 minutes played, looked reinvigorated and picked up four steals. The Pistons finished the 2013 season with five players scoring in double figures, led by 23 from Will Bynum. The loss prevented the Pistons from finishing the season on a five-game winning streak.

THE FACTS: Behind excellent production from Brook Lopez (29 points, 11 rebounds) and Reggie Evans (17 points, 24 rebounds), the Nets blew out the 76ers 104-83 at Barclays Center. The Nets dominated the Sixers in the paint and improved to 29-4 against teams with sub.-.500 winning percentage at the time of the game. MADISON, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Pfizer Consumer Healthcare (NYS: PFE) , makers of Advil®, is kicking off its Advil® Relief in Action campaign today that honors volunteers who don’t let pain get in the way of providing relief to others in need. Advil® Relief in Action celebrates the efforts of these tireless everyday heroes, as well as supports and contributes to the efforts of Habitat for Humanity and Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP), whose volunteers exemplify Relief in Action and work to improve the lives of others every day. Saving Schools and Libraries by Giving Up the Land They Sit On

The Brooklyn Heights library is neither the oldest nor the most dilapidated branch of the Brooklyn Public Library system. But the 52-year-old limestone building is nonetheless ripe for demolition.

It sits on land that developers crave, in a fashionable neighborhood where housing is in high demand. And so the library system, desperate for money to pay for $230 million in long-deferred repairs for its 60 branches, has embraced a novel financing model that is increasingly being used around New York City as a way to pay for government services.

The library, on Cadman Plaza, along with another library near the Barclays Center, would be sold to developers, torn down and then rebuilt at no public expense on the ground floor of a new apartment tower….
