Microsoft app store closes to minors in South Korea

Microsoft has locked minors out of its mobile app store in South Korea since last month.

Young users are blocked from the mobile app store as an unintended side-effect of the country’s so-called “Cinderella law,” which cuts off access to online games for users under age 16 from midnight to 6 a.m. To battle teenage addiction to video games, the government enacted the law in November of last year. But due to resistance, it relaxed the regulation since this July so that children under 18 now have the option of setting the time limit for themselves with the agreement of their parent or legal guardian.

Because Microsoft uses a single login for all services, including Xbox Live and its Windows app store, the law means the company must block users under 18 during those hours. But because of technical difficulties in cutting off access for certain periods of time, Microsoft decided to close down the adolescent users’ accounts altogether.

“We operate in 190 countries and Korea is the only country with such regulation, so the age verification system had to be installed,” said Jinho Song, a director for the Microsoft’s interactive entertainment business in Seoul.

Official: Forza Horizon announces Rally Expansion and Honda Challenge DLC packs [w/video]

Forza Horizon Rally Expansion and Honda Challenge

The guys at Turn 10 Studios have more DLC served up for Forza Horizon. On January 15, 2013, we’ll get the Honda Challenge Car Pack that puts the 2013 Honda Civic Coupe, an HPD Rally Fit and a 1986 Honda Civic Si Coupe in our garage. Part of Honda’s effort to return the Civic to its former place in everyone’s hearts, we presume.

The Challenge part of the equation will be the online race against Scott Dixon, wherein you try to beat the IndyCar driver’s time around a track in a 2013 Civic Si for the chance to meet the racer in person. What’s more, Horizon players will get to choose the track – look for the Honda section in Xbox Live and place your vote by January 8 for the showdown venue. There’s also a photo contest that starts on January 15, the same day that the absolutely free challenge pack will be available. The winner of that contest will get custom-wrapped Civic Si Xbox 360 console.

While you wait for that, available as of yesterday is the rally expansion pack. It adds five rally cars, new multiplayer events, co-drivers making announcements and a seven-race series in Colorado with 20 stages that culminates in someone being declared rally champion. If you want in, it’s free if you bought the $50 Season Pass – and you’ll also get a 2003 Ford Focus SVT as a special bonus – or it’ll be 1,600 MS Points if you aren’t a member of the Season Pass club. We’re working on a review of the significant expansion, too, so stay tuned.

The video below takes you on a romp through the rally pack, with ample demonstration of all the crashes you can’t wait to have.

Pennsylvania home invasion victim gets help over Xbox headset

Police say a Pennsylvania man used his Xbox headphones to call for help after being bound with duct tape and menaced with a gun during a home invasion.

Investigators say the 22-year-old suburban Pittsburgh man was playing video games in an upstairs bedroom when he heard his front door open. The man initially thought it was a family member but saw an armed man wearing a ski mask when he looked downstairs.

Authorities say the intruder bound Derick Shaffer and led him around the North Apollo home to locate valuables, then fled in Shaffer’s car. Shaffer reached a friend over his Xbox Live headset and had him call police.

The missing car was located about an hour later. Police questioned three people but are still trying to identify a suspect.

Xbox Live to add MTV, Flixster, 40 other apps to lineup

Microsoft plans to add more than 40 apps to its Xbox Live service worldwide in the coming months, the company announced Tuesday, offerings that include Flixster, MTV, Maxim, The CW Network and Vimeo in the United States.

Many of the new Xbox Live apps will be rolling out in the “coming weeks,” according to Larry Hyrb, Microsoft’s director of programming for Xbox Live, but some such as Cnet, Karaoke, Maxim and Microsoft’s cloud storage offering, SkyDrive, will be immediately available.

Hyrb, also known by his Xbox Live gamer tag Major Nelson, said, “You should be able to download these apps from the Xbox Live marketplace starting today,” in a Major Nelson blog.
