Tyra Banks And Ashton Kutcher Help Launch Social Shopping Platform

By Karsten Strauss, Forbes Staff

Adding yet another layer to the enterprise that is Tyra Banks, the former model turned television personality is taking to the startup game with an investment in a new social shopping platform. Ashton Kutcher, who has made a name for himself as a tech-centric venture investor through his own firm, A-Grade Investments, has also laid down cash. Called The Hunt, Banks and Kutcher’s latest venture helps people track down things they want to buy using Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr or any website with a photo of a product. While surfing the web, when you find something that appeals to you – a gadget, a piece of furniture, a pair of shoes you saw a celebrity wear –  you can upload the URL or just post a picture of it, which lets everyone else browsing the site know that you’re trying to find out where to get that product. As you browse what items other users are seeking, you can “follow” their searches so that when they find out where to get their coveted handbag, dress or pair of shoes, you will be notified as well. If you see a product that you recognize and know where it can be purchased, you can let the seeker (or ‘hunter’) know all about it. The San Francisco-based company was founded by Tim Weingarten, who’d previously headed Visage Mobile. Other investors in the company include A-Grade Investments’ Guy Oseary, Coca-Cola executive Rohan Oza, DesiHits! CEO Anjula Acharia-Bath, and Luminari Capital director Michael Banks. I tried it myself, setting up a profile and posting a “hunt” for a hooded blazer I’d briefly mentioned in a previous article about Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s penchant for hoodies. As I browsed it became clear that its early days for the new venture, as the categories for which people search are limited to mostly women’s fashion. We can probably expect more categories for men’s products in the future, as well as electronic gadgets and maybe even apps or games that people have seen pictures of but haven’t been able to identify. That said, it may well be that women are the focus users for The Hunt, as a Pinterest-style of platform has been known to really connect with female users. The Hunt is the first investment Ms. Banks has made through the newest arm of her Tyra Banks Company enterprise, Fierce Capital LLC. The fund will focus on early-stage companies, including women-led startups, according to the company. Ms. Banks first came to public attention as a model, sauntering down the runway wearing hip and sexy outfits from top international fashion designers. A career in television followed, with Banks at the helm of “The Tyra Banks Show” and “America’s Next Top Model.” She’s even written a children’s book called Modelland. Kutcher, a former male model turned TV and film actor, is currently starring alongside Jon Cryer in the hit CBS show Two and a Half Men. His venture investments have included Spotify, Uber, Foursquare, Getaround and YPlan, among others. He also …read more

Funny or Die's iSteve Hits the 'Net

iSteve, Funny or Die’s biopic on the late Steve Jobs, officially debuted this week online. As the site’s longest video project to date, the 80-minute comedy is a parody of the biopic genre.

Justin Long — who used to play Mac in those “Mac vs. PC” commercials a few years back — stars as the titular Jobs, with former Lostie Jorge Garcia assuming the role of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

Funnily enough, iSteve is the only Steve Jobs biopic that’s out right now, but there are two others in the works: one called jOBS, starring Ashton Kutcher and Josh Gad, which was recently bumped to a TBD release date, and another, currently untitled, penned by Aaron Sorkin.

Kutcher's Steve Jobs Movie Release Postponed

Anyone interested in seeing the indie biopic jOBS, starring Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs, is going to have to wait until further notice.

Open Road Films has indefinitely postponed the release of the film, which had been slated to open April 19.

“It appears the studio wanted more time to market the film. A new release date has yet to be set,” according to Vulture.

It should also be noted that jOBS received quite a backlash when Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak criticized the film’s authenticity after the clip below was released online:

Cory Booker At SXSW: Government Needs To Reform Social Media Strategy

By The Huffington Post News Editors

By Corrie MacLaggan
AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) – Cory Booker, the constantly tweeting mayor of Newark, New Jersey, who intends to run for the U.S. Senate, said on Sunday that the federal government needs to reinvent the often overly formal way it uses social media.
“It’s just using it as an announcement system, like you used to listen to in class: ‘The cafeteria will be serving roast beef, and I will be at this place or that place’,” Booker told Reuters after an appearance at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas. “But that’s not interaction, that’s not collaboration.”
Booker, 43, a rising star in the Democratic Party who has more than 1.3 million followers on Twitter, told the Austin audience that he can’t be a mayor who sits behind a desk and waits for the world to come to him.
Last year, the Newark mayor was hailed as a hero for inviting into his home neighbors who, he learned on Twitter, lost power because of Superstorm Sandy.
He also uses Twitter to give city phone numbers to constituents, share inspirational quotes, declare his love for the TV series Star Trek and answer questions from local students while admonishing them not to tweet in class.
“On it,” he replied to a resident who complained recently of a broken street light.
Booker, who made a failed run for Newark mayor in 2002 before winning the job in 2006, said he’s been hooked on Twitter since actor Ashton Kutcher called and told him why he should dive into the micro-blogging site.
‘TELLING YOUR TRUTH’
Booker said it was important to be himself on social media – and that this would still be true if he were in the Senate.
“Life is about telling your truth and being who you are, 100 percent,” he said. “This world desperately needs authenticity, people who have the courage to tell their truth every single day, and I would not stop being who I am just because of the title that’s before my name.” …read more

Michael C. Hall Talks ‘Dexter’ Ending; Says He’s Hesitant To Do Another TV Show

By The Huffington Post News Editors

“Dexter” may be approaching its final season — although Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins has refused to fully commit to ending the series after its upcoming Season 8 — but that didn’t stop Michael C. Hall from looking ahead to his post-“Dexter” future.

After playing a serial killer for nearly decade, Hall joked he might be up for some lighter fare. “Yes, maybe Ashton Kutcher is getting bored,” he quipped in an interview with Metro.

But Hall’s next project might not be on TV. He recently starred in a film called “Kill Your Darlings,” and while he cautioned that he isn’t “ruling anything out,” he said that “another open-ended commitment that could potentially go five or more years is a little daunting at this point.” Then again, Hall recalled feeling the same way as “Six Feet Under” ended its run on HBO. “And you can see where that got me,” he joked.

Influencer Marketing: How Your Business Can Benefit From Popchips' Secret Recipe

By Meghan Casserly, Forbes Staff When you think about popchips, the crunchy, salty, feather-light potato chip that seems to be everywhere these days, you probably think about the famous faces that (at least claim to) eat them. Ashton Kutcher, Bruno Mars and—most recently—Katy Perry have done promotional spots for the brand, making it clear that CEO Keith Belling is a believer in the power of celebrity.

Kutcher Responds to jOBS Inaccuracy Claims

After drawing criticism from Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak last week, actors Ashton Kutcher and Josh Gad have responded to claims that the forthcoming Steve Jobs biopic, jOBS, inaccurately depicts the duo’s relationship. Speaking at the opening keynote to the MacWorld expo in San Francisco, Kutcher emphasized the balance between providing an accurate portrayal of their real-life counterparts, but also serving the larger narrative:

“We weren’t there. And part of filmmaking is you have to make a narrative that plays. When you look at these earliest, intimate moments of the company, there was probably no one else there.”
