IBM Invests $1 Billion in Flash Technology

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

IBM just launched a $1 billion initiative to build and test Flash technology for enterprise solutions. The company said that Flash is already an integral part of consumer products, and that the technology could help companies tackle Big Data challenges.

IBM said in a press release statement that Flash could reduce transaction times for banking, trading and telecommunications by up to 90%, and batch processing times by up to 85%. The company also said its Flash technology could reduce energy consumption by up to 80% in data centers.

“Because it contains no moving parts, the technology is also more reliable, durable, and more energy efficient than spinning hard drives,” the company stated in the release.

IBM will spend the $1 billion to develop and design Flash solutions for servers, storage systems, and middleware. The company plans to set up 12 “Centers of Competency” around the world to run proof-of-concept scenarios for companies, using real-world data.

The company plans to build the centers in China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Singapore, South America, U.K., and the U.S., and will be operational by the end of this year.

Zuckerberg Announces Tech Group Fighting for Immigration Reform

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg publicly introduced a new organization he co-founded with other tech leaders, FWD.us, in a Washington Post Op-Ed yesterday, saying it will advocate on issues including immigration reform, education, and investments in scientific discoveries.

According to Zuckerberg’s article, immigration reform is the key issue the organization intends to take on. “We have a strange immigration policy for a nation of immigrants. And it’s a policy unfit for today’s world,” he wrote.

The Facebook CEO explained that his great-grandparents immigrated to the United States, entering through Ellis Island, and that he and his family wouldn’t be where they are, “without a welcoming immigration policy, a great education system and the world’s leading scientific community that created the Internet.”

Zuckerberg wrote about what he calls the “knowledge economy” in which “the most important resources are the talented people we educate and attract to our country. “A knowledge economy can scale further, create better jobs and provide a higher quality of living for everyone in our nation.”

In addition to Zuckerberg, the FWD.us organization is founded by leaders of America’s technology community including Reid Hoffman, Eric Schmidt, Marissa Mayer, Drew Houston, Ron Conway, Chamath Palihapitiya, Joe Green, Jim Breyer, Matt Cohler, John Doerr, Paul Graham, Mary Meeker, Max Levchin, Aditya Agarwal and Ruchi Sanghvi. It aims to work with both political parties in Congress, the administration, and state and local officials.

Facebook Enhances Status Updates

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

According to its website, Facebook is rolling out new enhancements to its status update feature.

Facebook said in an online statement that, “Starting this week, people can express what they’re watching, reading, listening to, eating, drinking or how they’re feeling in status updates.” Facebook gave an example of users who designate which movie they’re watching in the status update will then have the movie posted to the movie section of their timeline, and the movie’s Facebook page will appear in the status update.

To clarify any privacy concerns Facebook said, “These updates, and the stories added to your timeline, respect the privacy settings you choose for your post.”

The new feature will become available to additional U.S. users over the coming weeks.

Barnes & Noble Expands Self-Publishing on Nook

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Barnes & Noble launched a new self-publishing tool for authors today, called Nook Press. The online platform allows authors to write, collaborate, and publish books for Nook customers to purchase.

The company said in a press release: “By removing the technology barrier from self-publishing and offering easy-to-use tools for writing, editing, and publishing e-books, Nook Press makes it even easier for authors to focus on writing and reaching new readers.”

Nook Press will build on the current Nook self-publishing platform, called PubIt! The company said in the release that Nook Press is a free service that allows authors to sell their books to Nook customers within two to three days after submitting their work.

The new platform lets authors engage in live chat during weekday business hours with Nook customer service and includes visualized sales reports of the author’s book. Authors can also upload their work and invite others to edit or post comments for feedback.

Writers who sell books through Nook Press will receive 65% of sales for books priced at or between $2.99 and $9.99. For books priced at $2.98 or less, or $10.00 or more, the author will receive 40% of the selling price. The company said all books prices are determined by the author but must be between $0.99 and $199.99.

The service is live today at www.nookpress.com.

Pandora Hits 200 Million Registered Users in U.S.

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Online music streaming service Pandora has 200 million registered users in the U.S., the company announced today. It took the company six years to hit 100 million and it has doubled that number in under two years.

“We started this company to help people discover and enjoy music they love, and to help artists reach and grow their audiences. Only in our wildest dreams did we imagine what it would become,” Tim Westergren, founder of Pandora, was quoted in the company press release as saying.

The company launched in the summer of 2005 and achieved 100 million registered users in July 2011.

Pandora says it streams 200 million songs before 10 a.m. everyday and that more than 140 million listeners have streamed Pandora from a mobile device. The company streamed 1 million unique songs last month and the company says “the vast majority of that music got no other terrestrial radio airplay.”

Pandora said “tens of millions” of people use the service every month.

LinkedIn Adds New Mention Feature

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

On its blog this morning, LinkedIn (NYS: LNKD) announced that its users can now mention their connections and companies within their LinkedIn conversations.

The new feature allows LinkedIn members to be mentioned in status updates or comments on the website and sends a notification to the person who was mentioned in the status. It also integrates with Twitter, and will display the person’s Twitter handle within tweets when they’re mentioned on the LinkedIn site.

“We also know you’re engaging in meaningful conversations across other areas of LinkedIn, so look for the ability to mention your colleagues beyond the Homepage in the near future,” the company said. The new feature is available today for English-speaking members and will bring mentions to global users “soon.”

NVIDIA Introduces Enhanced Line of GPUs

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Today, NVIDIA announced a new line of five notebook GPUs, called the GeForce 700M line. The company mentioned three new features that it says will improve the user experience:

 • NVIDIA GPU Boost 2.0 technology for better graphics performance.
 • NVIDIA Optimus technology, which turns the GPU on or off to preserve battery life.
 • GeForce Experience software, which “adjusts in-game settings for the best performance and visual quality specific to a user’s notebook” and keeps drivers up to date.

“With no effort or input from the notebook user, the technologies work in the background to save battery life, enhance performance and enrich the visual experience — providing the best notebook experience the GPU can deliver,” the company said in a press release.

The company added that “every leading notebook manufacturer” will be rolling out machines with GPU Boost, including 2.0 technology, including Acer, Asus, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba.

The new line of GPUs will be used in the performance and mainstream segments and are available today.

Tesla Exceeds Model S Sales Target, Scraps Lower-Range Model

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Sales of the Model S exceeded earlier estimates by more than 5% in the first quarter, Tesla Motors announced today. In mid-February, the company had put estimates for Q1 at 4,500 units, but the number ended up surpassing 4,750.

“As a result, Tesla is amending its Q1 guidance to full profitability, both GAAP and non-GAAP,” said the company.

Tesla also announced today that it would not bring to market the lower-range Model S vehicles, due to low demand. Only 4% of customers chose the 40 kWh battery pack, according to the company, and that’s not enough to justify production of that version. “Customers are voting with their wallet that they want a car that gives them the freedom to travel long distances when needed,” Tesla said.

Instead of building low-range Model S units, customers who ordered the vehicle will receive the same 60 kWh battery pack as the longer-range models, but software will prohibit the larger battery pack from achieving the longer ranges. According to Tesla, the vehicles will “still have the improved acceleration and top speed of the bigger pack, so will be a better product than originally ordered, and can be upgraded to the range of the 60 kWh upon request by the original or a future owner.”

The company also reported that all of the current and future 60 kWh battery pack models have been built with hardware that’s compatible with Tesla’s Supercharger charging feature that allows customers to have “unlimited, free long distance travel for life,” if they upgrade to this option.

Google Tests Same-Day Delivery Service in San Francisco

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Google is launching a new (very limited) same-day delivery service for retail items, called Google Shopping Express, the company announced on its Google Commerce blog this morning. The trial service is open to a limited amount of people in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Those who sign up will receive unlimited, same-day delivery for free for six months from stores like Target, Walgreen, Staples, American Eagle, Toys “R” Us, Babies “R” Us, and other local retailers. The company said on its blog that the program is in its “incredibly early days and so the service is only available to a small number of people in the Bay Area.” Pricing for the service hasn’t been set.

Google said it’s using this pilot program to test out how the service works, and will expand its testing “as we work out the kinks.” The company said that it hopes to make it possible for consumers to get items they order online the same day and at a low cost.

Supreme Court Throws Out Case Against Comcast

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

The Supreme Court yesterday threw out a class action lawsuit against Comcast that had been brought by 2 million current and former Comcast customers citing competition concerns.

A post on the Supreme Court justices’ official blog said Justice Antonin Scalia‘s opinion for the Court “held that the class action in that case had been improperly certified under Rule 23(b)(3). The Third Circuit erred in refusing to decide whether the plaintiff class’s proposed damages model could show damages on a classwide basis. Under proper standards, the model was inadequate and the class should not have been certified.”

The Court’s opinion said the plaintiffs were suing Comcast for creating a monopoly by buying up smaller cable operations in the Philadelphia area, and that Comcast then charged customers rates above competitive prices. Comcast’s share of customers in the Philadelphia region grew from just under 24% in 1998 to 69.5% in 2007, according to the Court’s ruling.

The ruling said, “The first step in a damages study is the translation of the legal theory of the harmful event into an analysis of the economic impact of that event. The District Court and the Court of Appeals ignored that first step entirely.” The vote was 5-4 with Justices Breyer and Ginsburg writing a joint dissent, and Justices Sotomayor and Kagan joining.

Facebook Launches New Features for Mobile Advertising

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Today, Facebook announced on its developer blog two major advertising updates for its mobile app.

One of the new features allows developers to create ads that target either Android or iOS mobile platforms, as well as which version of the operating system the device is running on. Advertisers will also be able to select whether they want to show the ad to all mobile users or just ones on Wi-Fi networks.

The second update lets developers create and buy mobile app install ads through Facebook’s Ads Create Tool. This feature allows developers to create an ad for their app that will have a one-click install button on mobile devices. “Over the past few months we’ve seen increasing success with mobile app install ads from apps across a variety of verticals such as retail, e-commerce, gaming, and financial services,” the company said on the blog. “Many of these developers are using these ads to accelerate the organic distribution they already get through building with Facebook.”

Facebook said Social Quantum, an international game developer, achieved “the No. 5 grossing app in the U.S.” after using Facebook’s app install ads for less than one month. Facebook will host a Q&A for developers regarding the changes on April 17.

As Smart-Device Shipments Grow, Apple Inches Closer to Samsung

By Chris Neiger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Worldwide shipments of connected devices (tablets and smartphones) topped 1 billion in 2012 — a 29.1% increase year over year, according to a press release published today by the International Data Corporation

Samsung remains the leader in smart-device unit-shipment market share, with 21.2%. But Apple inched closer to Samsung with 20.3% in Q4 2012, because of iPhone 5 and iPad Mini shipments. Looking at the revenue share, though, Apple easily beats Samsung with 30.7%, compared with Samsung’s 20.4%.

Competition between the two companies is heating up, considering that the IDC expects tablet shipments to increase by 48.7% and smartphone shipments to increase 27.2% year over year in 2013. Keeping with the mobile trend, the research company expects tablet shipments to outpace desktop PC shipments this year and surpass portable PC shipments in 2014.

The IDC said that over the next four years, tablet shipments will grow by 174.5% and smartphone shipments will grow by 109.9%. The company also estimates that smart-device shipments will surpass 2.2 billion units in 2017, with revenues of $814.3 billion that year.
