New Samsung color laser printers have NFC built-in

Coming soon to a printer near you: more NFC. Samsung said Wednesday that two color laser printers with near-field communication would be available in the U.S. starting next week. (The printers were announced in Korea last month.) The products are the Xpress C410W color laser single-function printer, which will cost $229, and the Xpress C460FW MFP color laser multifunction printer, which will cost $399.

NFC helps printers keep pace with mobile users

NFC is still most common in cell phones and tablets. But no matter how much content moves online, everyone needs to print once in a while. NFC is supposed to make it easier for that print to happen through a simple touch, though there’s also an app involved, of course.

Samsung
The Xpress C410W color laser single-function printer will cost $229

Brother beat Samsung to the U.S. market with an NFC-equipped inkjet multifunction printer two weeks ago, the MFC-J870DW, but Samsung’s are the first laser-based models to arrive here. The C410W is your basic, low-end color laser for a home or very small office. The C460FW MFP is based on the same engine but adds a scanner and automatic document feeder for copy, scan, and fax functions.

Basic specs and probably pricey toner

Both products have top print speeds, per Samsung, of 19 pages per minute (ppm) for plain, black text and 4 ppm for color output. Paper handling includes a 150-sheet input tray and a 50-sheet output tray—best suited for low-volume use, in other words.

NFC Ring is designed to unlock your door and smartphone

NFC technology as a mobile pay technology never lived up to high expectations. Never mind, say analysts, because NFC, which stands for near field communications, as a wireless technology that can transfer data at short distances, may be the starter for innovative applications to come. A Kickstarter NFC-enabled, NFC Ring project now under way is a case in point. This is a ring made to be worn on the finger at all times, like a wedding band. The promotional video says that the ring allows the user to unlock a door lock that is NFC-enabled, unlock a smartphone just by touching it with the ring, or, for those so inclined, can hold your bitcoin address. The team behind the Android-based ring points out that it does not work easily with all NFC-enabled phones, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Blackberry Z10 to be exact. …read more

Ubuntu Edge no habrá ningún ol ‘run-of-the-mill móvil. Canonical están elaborando un dispositivo de comunicación que es de alta costura, quieren fuera de Apple.

Las normas provisionales para ello cuenta con componentes de gama alta, algunos casi nunca se usan en los móviles de los consumidores.

  • ‘Multi-core CPU’
  • 4GB RAM
  • 128GB SSD
  • 4.5″ Sapphire Crystal screen (1280×720 HD resolution)
  • Dual cameras (8mp rear, 2mp front)
  • MHL connector (supporting HDMI)
  • Long-life silicon anode battery
  • Dual-LTE, NFC, Dual-band WiFi & Bluetooth 4
  • GPS, Barometer, Compass, Proximity Sensor, Gyro, etc

What's Going On With Apple's Stock?

By Greg Satell, Contributor

afghanistan map SC US military deaths in Afghanistan at 2,070

is having another bad week and their stock is down more than 5% this morning. This time, the proximate cause is an announcement from Cirrus Logic, a key Apple supplier, stating that earnings will come in well below expectations and, by association, investors are now expecting Apple to come in low again too. Lately, it seems like everybody wants to beat up on Apple (me included – see here and here).  After a decade during which the company could do no wrong, now it can seemingly do no right. However, while it’s true that Apple has its problems (and serious ones at that) it is still a great company and a great business.  I think anybody taking a clear headed view of Apple has to take into account three factors: The Products:  I’m deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem and very happy with their products.  I love my iPhone, my iPad and my Macbook Air is far more reliable than any PC I ever worked on (I’m not so crazy about my Apple TV, but it works well enough).  For me, Apple products are worth the premium, at least for now. I do find myself somewhat envious about what’s going on in the Android world.  I’d like to have something like Google Now and don’t understand why Apple is the only major smartphone manufacturer to not have a model with NFC.  It seems to me by doing so, they are slowing a lot of innovation in the industry. So I think about switching sometimes, but every time I do, I remember about the Apple store and the Genius Bar.  By fully embedding myself in the Apple ecosystem, I’m sure that whatever problems I might have (and I did have one particularly nasty hardware problem), will be handled easily, effectively and conveniently.  I wouldn’t want to give that up. The Management:  Steve Jobs made Apple a special company.  Now that he’s gone, it’s clear that Apple has lost a step. However, its also important to remember that current management made Apple a very good company.  CEO Tim Cook is an outstanding operational executive and Jony Ive is the design genius behind the beautiful products that catapulted Apple to becoming the most valuable company on the planet (at least for a short time). So while current management has shown no sign of a vision for the future, they show every sign of competence. The Stock: Apple’s valuation (Disclosure: I’m an indirect investor through a fund) has fallen over 40% from its high because its become clear that we have no reason to expect the growth the company has delivered in the past.  This is a completely normal market reaction. However, Apple’s situation is somewhat abnormal because there was never any growth premium built into the stock price.  Even during its rapid rise, it still traded at a discount to the S&P.  It was earnings, not irrational exuberance, that made Apple so valuable. So while I’m as skeptical as anyone about Apple’s future, the

Pulse Electronics Announces Catalog NFC Antennas

Selection includes ferrite-loaded, stamp, and wire-on-carrier NFC antennas

SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Pulse Electronics Corporation (NYS: PULS) , a leading provider of electronic components, announces a new catalog selection of ferrite-loaded, stamp, and wire-on-carrier near field communication (NFC) antennas. These products are ideal for integration into point-of-sale terminals, security and access control panels, transportation payment devices, and consumer electronics. They enable superior data collection, data exchange, and authentication authorization applications as found in healthcare and other pairing/sharing applications. The NFC antennas allow for the wireless link between two devices, like a phone or security card; typically with a maximum distance of 100mm. The antennas operate at 13.56MHz and are meant for volumetric field strength efficiency rather than antenna gain like traditional antennas.

Pulse Electronics‘ catalog NFC antennas consist of three antenna families: the W3579 and W3580 ferrite-loaded antennas for tight-space integration in close proximity to metallic devices such as PCBs, batteries, and displays; the W7001 small stamp antenna for small-space applications; and the W7002 wire-on-carrier antenna, targeted to payment applications with mechanical features optimized to fit a display or keypad inside the coil. These NFC products can be integrated into a system for card emulation mode, peer-to-peer mode, or reader/writer mode depending on the needs of the end-application itself.

“Pulse is the first company to offer a variety of NFC antenna solutions targeted for multiple applications from payments to pairing, through distribution channels,” said Aaron Logan, technical product manager, Pulse Electronics Wireless Devices Antenna Division. “Pulse is the only antenna manufacturer, along with our distributors, to offer a selection of catalog, off-the-shelf parts. Pulse engineers recognized that no single NFC antenna meets every implementation need, and have risen to the mechanical challenges by creating a variety of solutions to meet those needs.”

The antennas, when integrated appropriately, can meet ISO/IEC 14443 A B (MIFARE), ISO/IEC 18092, JIS X 6319-4/FeliCa, NFCIP-1/ECMA 3-40, and EMVCo requirements. All parts have a lead time of 6-8 weeks after receipt of order. More information can be found on the data sheet for each antenna or on the Pulse Electronics website at http://www.pulseelectronics.com/CatalogNFCAntennas.

Will Wal-Mart Be the Death of Near-Field Communications?

By Rich Duprey, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

According to a recent Harris Interactive survey, most consumers feel smartphone payments will eventually replace credit and debit cards and cash for most purchases but it’s likely not going to happen within the next five years.

That bodes well for the long-term outlook for chip makers like NXP Semiconductors and Skyworks Solutions , which are leaders in the field of near-field communications, or NFC. That’s the technology that allows mobile devices to securely communicate with a payment terminal. Wave your NFC-enabled smartphone in front of an NFC-enabled terminal and you can easily make a payment.

Objects are closer than they appear
The interest expressed in the survey is part of the reason behind why NXP feels 2013 is the year that NFC technology takes off. Google has been in the forefront of the issue through its Wallet mobile payment system and Android smartphones like Samsung’s Galaxy have been equipped with NFC chips to take advantage of it wherever it’s available. Indeed, Samsung recently partnered with Visa to provide an NFC platform that financial institutions can trust.

Banks will be able to load payment account information to a secure chip embedded in Samsung devices using Visa’s mobile provisioning service linked to Samsung’s service that creates secure data storage domains for card issuers.

Notably, however, Apple has yet to jump into the fray. Although many watchers had anticipated the iPhone 5 to include an NFC chip, it was not to be, even though it had acquired such capabilities through its AuthenTec acquisition last year. And with Skyworks already a chip supplier for the iPhone, should Apple decide it needs to be a part of the NFC revolution, it has ready access to a key player in the field.

Scanning the horizon
Yet retail king Wal-Mart may be leading the way in killing off the chances of NFC gaining a real foothold. Rather than investing in the expensive new terminal upgrades that would be required to make NFC in its stores a reality, it’s rolling out an iPhone app called Scan & Go that allows consumers to scan and bag their purchases while shopping and simply scan a quick-response pixilated QR code square at the checkout terminal to complete the purchase.

While that may be a means for it to ultimately save money on cashier salaries, it could provide the pathway for other retailers to follow. Wal-Mart is expanding the test program to 200 stores in 14 markets, and though the app is only available for the iPhone, it’s easy to see that (depending upon its success) it could eventually roll out to all 14,000 stores and be available across all smartphone platforms.

Stop & Shop supermarkets have offered a similar app for both iPhones and Android devices for several years, but Wal-Mart’s entry could be the thing that brings it mainstream. Because near-field communications has taken longer than expected to get up and running, just as widespread adoption looks to be within …read more

Broadcom Could Dial Up $44 On These Drivers

By Trefis Team, Contributor

Quick Take Broadcom gained additional market share in all of its business segments in 2012 – connectivity & baseband, network solutions and broadband. Though the short-term growth will be impacted by macro headwinds, we believe Broadcom has strong fundamentals to support a higher valuation. Broadcom will retain its market leadership in connectivity solutions for mobiles and tablets, and it expanded its wireless product portfolio with NFC quad-core chips and will launch the first 5G Wi-Fi smartphone in a few weeks. Strengthening 3G business and LTE compatibility can increase Broadcom’s market share in the baseband and application processors market. Softness in data center & lower enterprise spending led to a decline in Broadcom’s networking business, but it has expanded its addressable market with an enhanced product portfolio and will witness growth as the economic situation improves. The company will benefit from strong demand for advanced set-top boxes in developed countries. Despite an annual contraction in the overall semiconductor industry, Broadcom closed its fiscal 2012 with an 8% increase in annual revenues as it gained additional market share in all of its business segments – connectivity & baseband, network solutions and broadband. However, it marked a 22% annual decline in net income in 2012 on account of higher operating expenses. …read more

Can New Products and Better Focus Drive Broadcom?

By Richard Saintvilus, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

The semiconductors industry can be pretty ruthless and filled with high stakes. It’s a sector consumed with rivals wanting nothing more than to put each other out of business with every new product launch. But Broadcom has always managed to stand out and remain a step ahead, which was the reason the company (rightfully) got the benefit of the doubt from the Street after posting soft fourth-quarter results.

Reasons to expect an outperformance
Nevertheless, the company’s been making up for it ever since. For instance, on Feb. 12, Broadcom announced the BCM21892, the company’s first LTE-compatible baseband chip that supports all 4G LTE bands — saying it was 35% smaller than current products, making it the industry’s smallest 4G LTE chip.

A couple of weeks later, the company announced the first Femtocell chip that integrates radio frequency and baseband modem. But that wasn’t all. In the weeks that followed, it’s been a succession of product releases and announcements. The benefit of the doubt aside, is the Street now discounting Broadcom’s true potential? This is a company that’s coming off a 14% year-over-year increase in revenue. Yet some investors considered that performance subpar.

Let’s keep things in perspective. Aside from Qualcomm , which grew chip revenue 34%, the sector’s overall performance was abysmal. So in light of Broadcom’s new products, which should help strengthen the company’s market position, it’s a safe bet that Broadcom should win market share in the coming quarters against Qualcomm and NVIDIA.

What’s more, even though Broadcom’s management played it conservative with guidance, the company’s strong position with Apple and Samsung, shouldn’t be discounted, either. Recent reports suggest that not only is Apple ramping up iPhone distribution in China, but Apple also plans to release a cheaper version. That’s not to mention the strong anticipation for the iPhone 5S. Meanwhile, although the Samsung Galaxy S4 didn’t exactly woo the Street, Broadcom should still benefit from any type of the demand the phone enjoys. Essentially, forget the smartphone war between Apple and Samsung: Broadcom wins either way.

Where’s the company heading?
Management has made it very clear where it wants to take the company. If the recent product announcements serve as an indication, the company also wants to be better diversified. When Broadcom held its analyst day last December, management revealed encouraging strategies related to near-field-communication, or NFC, and how the future of mobile payments can become a strong revenue stream for Broadcom. Here too, is an advantage with Apple.

There were also positive remarks about fifth-generation Wi-Fi. Management said new standards can generate 20% to 30% higher average selling prices. But there was also a significant focus on long-term-evolution, or LTE, technology. The company has held true to its promise and has taken on the LTE platform and has pioneered new designs such as the BCM21892.

It remains to be seen, however, how these new chips can affect Qualcomm, which has a sizable lead in mobile baseband technology. But given the traction that NVIDIA is starting to gain, Broadcom understands how important it is to …read more

Pokémon Wii U Follows in Skylanders' Footsteps

Thanks to leaked scans from Japan’s CoroCoro magazine, we already knew that Pokémon Rumble was heading to Wii U’s eShop. What we didn’t know was that Pikachu’s first HD adventure will be taking a page out of the Skylanders book – and will also be the first game to make use of the system’s NFC features.

Called Pokémon Rumble U, this downloadable title will feature all 649 pocket monsters battling it out, probably in a similar fashion to the last two games. As many gamers speculated when the Wii U’s NFC tech was first announced, you’ll be able to purchase Pokémon figurines, then place them on the NFC pad and have them appear in the game. It’s similar to how the popular Skylanders series works, except you won’t need a special accessory to link your figures with the game. You’ll also be able to level up your characters and record battle information on the toys themselves.

PayOne Wages Mobile Wallet War on Home Depot

By Justin Loiseau, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Privately held mobile payment company PayOne announced today that it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against The Home Depot for its use of eBay‘s PayPal technology at its checkout.

In a statement today, PayOne President and CEO Joe Lynam said:

Since 2000, PayOne has invested significant time and money developing its proprietary mobile payment technologies designed to simplify the checkout process and the PayOne systems have been deployed by digital merchants across the globe. The ‘mobile wallet wars’ have moved beyond the digital world into point of sale, but now face adoption challenges and substantial friction with consumer setup requirements, security concerns and lack of merchant required NFC infrastructure. PayOne’s technology solves these challenges by enabling an ‘instant wallet’ capability that can be extended to the retail and physical world for billions of consumers worldwide, with no pre-registration or friction at point of sale, and no NFC infrastructure required.

PayOne has accused Home Depot of infringing on two separate patents, including the use of a phone number and PIN to pay, as well as point-of-sale payment. The company is seeking a court-ordered injunction, as well as unspecified damages.

According to PayOne, there are almost 10 billion mobile-connected devices internationally, and the company’s Global Carrier Network currently offers payment ability for over 4 billion across 80 countries .

As of this writing, neither The Home Depot, nor eBay have published any official responses to PayOne’s suit.
