PIN-Punching Robot Can Crack Your Phone's Security Code In Less Than 24 Hours

By Andy Greenberg, Forbes Staff

There’s nothing particularly difficult about cracking a smartphone’s four-digit PIN code. All it takes is a pair of thumbs and enough persistence to try all 10,000 combinations. But hackers hoping to save time and avoid arthritis now have a more efficient option: Let a cheap, 3D-printable robot take care of the manual labor. …read more

Payleven launches person-to-person card payments in Europe

Germany-based card payments startup Payleven is going to make its chip-and-PIN service available to individuals, the company said on Wednesday.

Payleven offers a similar mobile card payments service as the U.S. based Square. Up until now, Payleven’s chip-and-PIN service was only available to small merchants but as of Wednesday Payleven is offering the ability for private individuals to sign up for card payments in the U.K., the company said. Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Brazil will follow soon, it added.

Payleven’s Chip & PIN card reader device accepts European payment cards that have chips in them and require PIN numbers. Cards accepted include MasterCard, Visa, Maestro and V PAY cards. Acceptance of additional card schemes will be announced in the future, the company said on its website.

Individuals who want to allow chip-and-PIN card owners to pay them have to buy a payment terminal for €100 (US$130). All payments have a transaction fee of 2.75 percent, charged to the terminal owner, said Christian Hillemeyer, head of Payleven’s PR. When a terminal is purchased, however, the first €50 of transaction fees is not charged, he added.

Lawsuit could put kink in Microsoft's push for cloud security

A lawsuit could put a crimp in Microsoft’s reported plans to implement two-factor authentication for users of its consumer cloud services.

Two-factor authentication—which supplements a user’s password with a PIN or code generated by a local application or sent by a cloud provider to a user’s device, typically a cell phone—has been adopted by large cloud-service providers as a means of better securing online accounts.

Now, a patent lawsuit filed by New Jersey-based StrikeForce challenges two-factor authentication technology used by PhoneFactor, a company acquired by Microsoft last October.

The lawsuit could affect the security of all users of Microsoft’s consumer cloud services, such as SkyDrive and Outlook.com, as well as users of other services that use two-factor authentication, such as Google and Dropbox.

NCR Brings Contactless ATMs to Poland with ING

Waving card over reader creates a faster, more modern customer experience

WARSAW, Poland–(BUSINESS WIRE)– NCR Corporation (NYS: NCR) , a global technology company, has introduced one of the world’s first contactless ATM environments, working with MasterCard and ING Bank Śląski to bring the new technology to customers in Poland. This pilot program was launched in November in Katowice and Warsaw, allowing ING customers in Poland to quickly and easily withdraw cash from an ATM without needing to insert their card.

Financial institutions and retailers are looking for a variety of methods to deliver flexible payment options for their customers. Beyond NFC-enabled devices, NCR has implemented or introduced proof of concepts using contactless cards, 2D barcode transactions, and one-time PINs for ATM transactions alone.

The contactless-card enabled machines permit ING customers with VISA and MasterCard debit contactless cards to initiate fast cash withdrawals by holding their card near the ATM reader. Upon a confirmation of their PIN code, customers will have the choice of a cash dispense in common “fast cash” values.

“Introduction of such technology means faster and more convenient transactions for ING Bank customers. It is not only the first installation of this kind in Poland, but also one of the first in the world,” said Barbara Borgieł-Cury, head of Accounts, Payments and Cards Department at ING Bank Śląski. “We want our customer to have access to the most modern, convenient and safest solutions on the market. Contactless and mobile transactions are the future of financial sector development in Poland and around the world. ING Bank Śląski was one of the first institutions in Poland to offer cards with a built-in contactless technology to their customers. And now, with the help of NCR, we are one of the first in the world to offer innovative contactless-card ATM dispense functionality.”

Today in Poland 70 percent of all cards are equipped with contactless technology, and more than 50 percent of EFTPOS accept contactless transactions. With the number of contactless transactions in the country growing very rapidly the demand for more contactless options has increased.

“A contactless dispense transaction is approximately 25 percent faster than a traditional withdrawal requiring insertion of the card into the card reader,” said Ruth Fornell, vice president of Global Professional Services, NCR. “At NCR, we are committed to making every …read more

Why Your Next Phone Will Include Fingerprint, Facial, and Voice Recognition

By Tarun Wadhwa, Contributor

In some ways, it’s a marvel that even half of consumers bother to lock their phones. You would think the benefits would be obvious enough: by entering a few numbers, you can achieve a basic level of protection from prying eyes.  But according to a recent study, 44% of users said that even this was too much of a hassle – worse, 30% weren’t even worried about mobile security at all.  From 0000 to 9999 there are 10,000 possible combinations of digits, yet in a sample of 3.4 million passwords, over 10% decided that “1234” was their strongest choice. For years now, consumers have been demanding a better way, something more convenient and less time-consuming.  As it turns out, they may have had the answer all along without even knowing it – their body parts can serve as their next password.  Biometric identification, which works by using the unique characteristics of your body to prove who you are, may be the key to a much more effective system. In fact, it is an almost certainty that within the next few years, three biometric options will become standard features in every new phone: a fingerprint scanner built into the screen, facial recognition powered by high-definition cameras, and voice recognition based off a large collection of your vocal samples. To many in the industry, this is not a surprise but an inevitability.  We store an enormous amount of some our most intimate and personal information on cell phones.  Businesses today are constantly struggling with policies regarding bringing devices from home; a study by Symantec showed that mobile device security was the greatest area of concern for organizations around the world.  PIN numbers are better than nothing at all, but nowhere near enough in a world where cell phone theft now makes up a major portion of urban crime, and a missing device means lost company secrets. Ever since Apple purchased Authentec Inc in July of last year, there has been an endless stream of news stories obsessing over whether Apple will include a fingerprint scanner in their next release.  In reality, Apple is one among many players, and whether they include a biometric sensor in the 5S or wait till the 6 is largely irrelevant, the entire mobile industry has been headed this way for years now.  Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus phones include facial recognition already (although, they did not do a great job), accessories that can add a fingerprint scanner to your current phone have proven to be popular, and voice recognition is now available through many different services. What makes this so feasible is that the technologies needed to make these changes are already in place. Facial and voice recognition are just software; they can use the powerful cameras and microphones already in your phone.  And as the next generation of devices are made with better internal components, these systems will only get more powerful and more accurate.  Fingerprint scanners have also matured greatly over the last few years, and at …read more

Researcher says Samsung will release patch for lockscreen hole

(Phys.org) —A security researcher, describing some of his about-me features as “mobile enthusiast” and “Linux fiddler,” this week discovered a security hole on an Android Samsung phone. In a March 20 posting on his blog, Terence Eden said he found a hole that would allow hackers to gain control of a phone’s apps, dialer, and settings, and, here’s the kicker, even though the phone is locked with password, PIN or other security approach. Potential trouble-making by an intruder could start with the emergency dialer, with certain steps that could result in allowing the intruder to interact with the device and disable the lockscreen as well. Eden discovered the flaw on a Galaxy Note II running Android 4.1.2. …read more

PayOne Wages Mobile Wallet War on Home Depot

By Justin Loiseau, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Privately held mobile payment company PayOne announced today that it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against The Home Depot for its use of eBay‘s PayPal technology at its checkout.

In a statement today, PayOne President and CEO Joe Lynam said:

Since 2000, PayOne has invested significant time and money developing its proprietary mobile payment technologies designed to simplify the checkout process and the PayOne systems have been deployed by digital merchants across the globe. The ‘mobile wallet wars’ have moved beyond the digital world into point of sale, but now face adoption challenges and substantial friction with consumer setup requirements, security concerns and lack of merchant required NFC infrastructure. PayOne’s technology solves these challenges by enabling an ‘instant wallet’ capability that can be extended to the retail and physical world for billions of consumers worldwide, with no pre-registration or friction at point of sale, and no NFC infrastructure required.

PayOne has accused Home Depot of infringing on two separate patents, including the use of a phone number and PIN to pay, as well as point-of-sale payment. The company is seeking a court-ordered injunction, as well as unspecified damages.

According to PayOne, there are almost 10 billion mobile-connected devices internationally, and the company’s Global Carrier Network currently offers payment ability for over 4 billion across 80 countries .

As of this writing, neither The Home Depot, nor eBay have published any official responses to PayOne’s suit.

What’s On Your Mind • New Scam – Beware

By Frank Jenkins The following was sent to me by a friend:

Just when you think you’ve heard it all. Here comes another scam.

WOW, WHAT NEXT?

This scam is very clever. Be very careful out there! One could easily fall
for this – beware of people bearing gifts

There is a new and clever credit card scam. Please circulate this. Someone
it happened to says it works like this:

Wednesday a week ago, I had a phone call from someone who said that he was
from some outfit called: “Express Couriers” asking if I was going to be
home because there was a package for me, and the caller said that the
delivery would arrive at my home in roughly an hour. And sure enough, about an
hour later, a uniformed delivery man turned up with a beautiful basket of
flowers and wine. I was very surprised since it did not involve any special
occasion or holiday, and I certainly didn’t expect anything like it. Intrigued
about who would send me such a gift, I inquired as to who the sender is.
The deliveryman’s reply was, he was only delivering the gift package, but
allegedly a card was being sent separately; (the card has never arrived!).
There was also a consignment note with the gift.

He then went on to explain that because the gift contained alcohol, there
was a $3.50 “delivery charge” as proof that he had actually delivered the
package to an adult, and not just left it on the doorstep where it could be
stolen or taken by anyone.

This sounded logical and I offered to pay him cash. He then said that the
company required the payment to be by credit or debit card only so that
everything is properly accounted for.

My husband, who by this time was standing beside me, pulled his wallet out
of his pocket with the credit/debit card, and ‘John’, the “delivery man”,
asked my husband to swipe the card on the small mobile card machine which
had a small screen and keypad where Frank was also asked to enter the card’s
PIN and security number. A receipt was printed out and given to us.

To our horrible surprise, between Thursday and the following Monday,
$4,000 had been charged/withdrawn from our credit/debit account at various ATM
machines.

It appeared that somehow the “mobile credit card machine” which the
deliveryman carried now had all the info necessary to create a “dummy” card with
all our card details after my husband swiped our card and entered the
requested PIN and security number.

Upon finding out about the illegal transactions on our card, we
immediately notified the bank which issued us the card, and our credit/debit account
was closed.

We also personally went to the Police, where it was confirmed that it is
definitely a scam because several households had been similarly hit.

WARNING: Be wary of accepting any “surprise gift or package”, which you
neither expected nor personally ordered, especially if it involves any kind
of payment as a condition of receiving the gift or package. Also, never
accept anything if you do not personally know or there is no proper
identification of who the sender is.

Above all, the only time you should give out any personal credit/debit
card information is when you yourself initiated the purchase or transaction!

Pass this on, it may just prevent someone else from being swindled. No
virus found in this message.

Update: Nexus 7 & PlasmaActive vs. 3G

Just a small update to (partly) answer my own question: apparently, the 3G modem in the Nexus 7 can be accessed via the cdc_acm Linux kernel driver. Great thanks to whoever activated that option in our hardware-adaptation kernel (I suspect Tuomas did this. :) ).

To cut a long story short. After inserting my SIM card into the Nexus 7 (Note that I have disabled the PIN for this particular card.) a new “Mobile Broadband” device showed up in the network manager applet. According to the info there it is the device /dev/ttyACM0. Note that I have two ttyACMx devices here on the Nexus 7 3G version, 0 and 1. According to the modem-manager debug output the 3G modem is identified as “XMM6260″, which corresponds to the other sources that say this chip is built into the Nexus 7.

So far so good, however, there is the problem that the XMM6260 seems to use a (slightly?) different command set. Apparently ofono already has an according driver implementation for this chip but not modem-manager. I uploaded the debug output of modem-manager to pastebin: http://pastebin.com/d7wS98FU

Still, even though the modem does not work yet, it is great news that there is the kernel driver. All that is needed now to get internet via 3G working on Nexus 7 with PlasmaActive is either an adapted modem-manager or the integration of ofono.
