This has been a good week for the build. I’ve got the DVD drives wrapped, more paracord has arrived (enough to do the top), the side windows are ready to cut and I finally got sponsored, thanks to IceModz.com .

I’ve also got around to planning the mount and door for the ITX board and Mac Mini. They will be mounted sideways, possibly with a mount in the middle, possibly with just zip ties. This will be connected to the bottom 4 5.25″ drive mounts and a front USB panel. I’ll try to add a door too, but i might not be able to.

I apologise for the pics this week, it’s raining so i cannot get proper lighting.

The Stencil for the windows. The inside cutout will be used with purple mirror acrylic on one side, The whole size of the paper will be the UV orange window on the other side.

When the County learned there were to be extended shutdowns of the aqueduct, they recognized the need to develop a long-term alternative supply of water and decided on a new transmission main and a pre-fabricated pumping station. ARCADIS was responsible for the entire project from initial planning through design and construction resulting in the County’s first large-scale installation of ultraviolet (UV) disinfection technology and no disruptions to serviceintheir critical service area, which includes a hospital, penitentiary and medical college.

The Bay Park STP Dechlorination Facility will also compete in the national competition sponsored by the ACEC.

In the bird world, male and female blue tits are hard to distinguish for the human observer. However, in the UV-range, visible to birds, the male is much more colourful. A closer look at the monogamous mating system of these birds again reveals that all is not what it seems: in every second nest there are chicks that are not related to the care-giving father. An already mated male can increase the number of his offspring by siring extra-pair offspring in other nests than the one he cares for with his mate. Emmi Schlicht and Bart Kempenaers of the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Seewiesen investigated whether this could be the driving force behind the evolution of sexual dimorphism. However, their findings suggest that effects of extra-pair paternity are limited, and cuckoldry can even reduce the intensity of sexual selection. …read more

Two outperformers
Of the 13 stocks in this portfolio, two stood out as outperformers, and helped keep the portfolio flat since last month. Shares of fiber-optic laser maker IPG Photonics were up 12% during the month of March. The biggest cause for this move was the company’s announcement that it would be acquiring Mobius Photonics.

The move is important because Mobius is a specialist in UV fiber lasers that help make semiconductors and solar hybrid panels. As IPG is already the leader in fiber-optic lasers, it believes integrating Mobius’ technology into the company will allow it to offer UV lasers for a lower cost than the competition.

The second big outperformer was Stratasys , one of the leaders of the 3-D printing revolution. The company saw shares rise 17% last month, primarily due to a positive earnings report.  For the fourth quarter of 2012, revenue at the company rose 30%, while net income grew 40%. Though it was tough to tell  how much of the growth was organic, and how much was due to the merger with Objet, investors were clearly pleased by the news.

Three underperformers
What was good news for Stratasys investors, however, didn’t translate the same way for investors in fellow 3-D printing company 3D Systems . It doesn’t help that in February, 3D released earnings that disappointed Wall Street. And many apparently assumed that with Stratasys performing so well, it meant 3D was losing market share.

Personally, I don’t completely buy that argument, as there’s no telling how big 3-D printing will be in the future, and there’s more than enough room for two winners in the space.

IPG Photonics Buys Mobius Photonics

Oxford, Mass.-based IPG Photonics bought itself a rival photonics company on the other side of the country today. Mountain View, Calif.-based Mobius Photonics makes high-power pulsed UV fiber lasers used in micromachining silicon wafers, via drilling to create a connection between two layers of a semiconductor, and processing solar hybrid panels.

IPG says it’s buying the company in part “to accelerate its entry into the UV laser market,” which IPG thinks “could be a significant sales driver for IPG in the coming years.” IPG believes that in conjunction with its own technology, it will be able to advance the market for low-cost UV fiber lasers.

That being said, the deal won’t have any immediate beneficial effect on IPG‘s finances. While the purchase price it’s paying wasn’t disclosed in today’s announcement, Mobius’ revenues in 2012 were a mere $1.4 million — about 0.2% of IPG‘s sales that year.

Shares of IPG gained 0.7% in Tuesday trading, closing at $62.68 ahead of the announcement.

The 5335 brings state of the art performance to the flexible circuit and general micromachining industry by use of its proprietary Third Dynamics™ technology. Considered basic but advanced outcome (Custom Backup Solution)

Ive a problem that I’m reaching out for help.

Ive written (With bits and pieces) of script that is not running as expected or is having an issue causing processes to spiral out of control.

The script does this:

Unloads a UV database server

Tars up a few folders

Transfers the file to another server

Reloads the UV database

Simple actually but I’m lost in its dysfunction.

The result is that it will write to a local server (CIFS) but its performance is so bad it never completes or takes down the server.

I end up with multiple uvsh processes running at 100 percent, or 50 percent. Yes I’m stumped here, I expect this to be simple but its not acting right.

What to Wear For Winter Runs

If you’re forgoing the comfortable temperatures of your gym this Winter, that can mean dealing with a lot of snow, ice, hail, rain, and sleet. Winter running has just as many challenges as running in extreme heat, but with the right gear, you’ll stay warm, dry, and comfortable.

Your comfort level depends on many factors, including how fast you’re running, how comfortable you are in the cold, and how long your run is, so your perfect Winter outfit may differ. However, below are good rules of thumb for dressing for Winter running, whether it’s in snowy, freezing conditions, or slighter warmer temps.

When It’s 32 Degrees or Below

  • Start off with a wicking bra and a wicking tank. We love Ibex sports tops since they are made of comfy, breathable, and natural merino wool.
  • Pull on a long-sleeved midweight baselayer shirt made from either non-itchy merino wool or polyester.
  • Slip on wicking socks that go up to your knee to keep your calves warm. Lightweight ski socks do just the trick; many, like these Smartwool PhD Snowboard Light Socks ($24), are made of a natural and synthetic blend that keeps your toes warm without too much bulk.
  • Wear warm running tights on your legs. Try these Under Armour cold-weather compression leggings ($50).
  • Over the long-sleeve shirt, wear a fitted wind-stopping softshell like this one from Cloudveil ($200).
  • Running gloves or liners will protect your hands.
  • Wear a lightweight hat so your head doesn’t get too sweaty.
  • On cold days, wear a fleece neck warmer. It will keep your neck and chin warm while also helping to prevent burning lungs.
  • Facial sunscreen and lip balm with SPF are both musts, as are sunglasses to protect your eyes. Snow reflects the sun’s harmful UV rays and the light bouncing off the snow can be blinding.
  • Water-resistant but breathable running shoes help make snowy or rainy conditions bearable for your feet. These Pearl Izumi Seek IV WRX trail-running shoes ($130) are made just for bad Winter weather. Wearing gaiters over your calves will keep your ankles and legs dry when the snow is deep.
  • When it’s icy, slip on a set of Yaktrax Run straps ($40) on your running shoes to give you more traction and prevent slipping on hard snow or ice.

When It’s Above 32 Degrees

If temperatures are chilly where you live but haven’t hit that freezing mark, you still need to dress for the weather. But while all of the above are Winter essentials in snow country, layering that much on your body in 40-degree weather can lead to a sweaty, uncomfortable run. Dressing like it’s 20 degrees warmer than it is will help ensure you don’t over-layer. With that said, here are some guidelines for those (relatively) warmer Winter runs.

SnapBox turns your smartphone photos into works of art

LAS VEGAS — Capturing a photo on your smartphone and sharing it with friends is the easy part. But what about turning those shots into printed works of art? Joining the throngs of mobile photo printing services is SnapBox, which offers an easy way to get your photos off your phone and onto your wall. The end result is a unique gallery-wrapped photo mounted on a canvas frame.

To order a print, simply send up to five photos attached in an e-mail to snapbox@snapboxez.com. A few minutes later, you’ll receive an e-mail with a mock-up of what your SnapBox print will look like. SnapBox offers five size options: 5-by-7, 8-by-10, 10-by-13, and 5-by-5 or 9-by-9 for square shots (read: Instagram). These size options are pre-selected based on photo aspect ratios to keep your photo looking its best.

Once you select the size you want, the e-mail redirects you to SnapBox’s website to complete the order. Prints can be shipped directly to your door for an additional shipping fee, or can instead be shipped to your local CVS drugstore for free pickup. SnapBox has also partnered with Seattle-based Bartell Drugs for in-store pickup as well. SnapBox officially launched in October by parent company Jondo-USA, but is on display at the International CES in Las Vegas this week. Jondo specializes in high-quality photo printing and art reproductions for galleries, and the company uses the same techniques to produce SnapBox’s prints. The shots are printed with a black boarder, and the canvas is stretched over a wooden frame. Prints are UV-protected as well.
