Ethnic Radio Programming Targets New Chinese Immigrants

By David Yin, Forbes Staff

The U.S. Census Bureau recently announced that Asians were the country’s fastest-growing ethnic group in 2012. Their population jumped 2.9%, or 530,000 to 18.9 million, with 60% of this increase coming from international migration. As many migrants have limited English proficiency, their growth in numbers has led to opportunities for media companies which serve ethnic minorities. In April Magic Broadcasting agreed to sell KDAY, a Los Angeles-based hip hop radio station that had helped bring the West Coast rap scene into prominence, to a group of Chinese investors for $19.5 million. If the deal is approved by the Federal Communications Commission (), KDAY is likely to switch from playing Jay-Z and Kanye West to a Chinese language format. I spoke to Arthur Liu, founder and chief executive of Multicultural Radio Broadcasting, to discuss his broadcasting niche and his views on the future of the industry. (Liu is not involved in the KDAY deal.) The son of a journalist, Liu was born in Shandong, China and later moved to Taiwan and the U.S.. He started the company in 1982 and launched his first radio station (WNWK, 105.9) in New York in 1992. Six years later, a change in FCC regulations allowed him to sell the station, along with another smaller station, to Heftel Broadcasting, then the nation’s largest Spanish language radio group, for $135 million. Given that Liu only paid $5 million for the station, he used most of the proceeds to buy ten more radio stations on the West Coast. Today, Liu splits his time between New York and California, managing a nationwide network of 40 radio stations and serving ethnic minorities in ten major markets. Liu says his business builds on the diversity of race, culture and language in the country. His radios stations mirror the ethnic makeup of the population, broadcasting daily in Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian and several other languages. He specifically targets the Asian-American market because the audience in its different subcultures cannot be reached so broadly, unlike the Spanish language market. Before entering a radio market, Liu looks carefully at its geographic location and the size of its audience. He adds that the company has no Vietnamese language programing in New York but several Vietnamese language stations in southern California. To cater to the large Spanish-speaking population, Liu also leases airtime in 12 stations to Spanish language producers, who design their own content and seek their own advertising streams. While Liu says his radio business is “doing very well,” he admits that it has been greatly affected by the rise of new forms of media. He says that the company is adopting new broadcasting trends such as mobile applications and internet streaming. He cites the company’s Radio Chinese Plus, a radio application for smartphones that currently has 680,000 active users. Liu is also expanding his cable business, which complements his radio business and broadens his reach. His radio and cable branches are housed in the same buildings – in New York and Los Angeles – and …read more

Lil Wayne’s ‘God Bless Amerika’ Video Seems Timely (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Lil Wayne released the video for “God Bless Amerika” on Monday night, a clip full of images of Wayne’s native Hollygrove, New Orleans. The community, still devastated by 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, serves as a poignant reminder of the failures of America’s government to rehabilitate impoverished communities that were damaged by the monstrous storm.

The video suggests that it’s not all that hard to draw a line from Kanye West’s criticism at the time (“George Bush doesn’t care about black people”) to the continued travesty that is the reality of life on the ground in Hollygrove.

The “God Bless Amerika” video made waves when it was being filmed because Wayne appeared to be stomping on an American flag. Though such an act wouldn’t necessarily have been out of line with the thematic elements of the song, it turns out that rapper was honest when he said the fallen flag wouldn’t be depicted in the final product.

Lady Gaga Announces New Album Details With Bonkers Facebook Post

By Nolan Feeney, Forbes Staff

Lady Gaga emerged from her creative hibernation to announce via Facebook the release date for ARTPOP, her highly anticipated album and multimedia app that goes live and on sale Nov. 11. The announcement is good news for the singer’s dedicated fans, who haven’t heard new music from the Celebrity 100 superstar since 2011’s multi-platinum Born This Way, and who have barely seen her perform live since a hip injury forced her to cancel the remainder of her tour. But it’s bad news for fans of the English language, as the announcement is filled with bombastic prose and bold proclamations that make little sense after first read. Here, we break some of the statement’s most puzzling paragraphs. 1. “Built by TechHAUS, the technological branch of HAUS OF GAGA, the app itself is a musical and visual engineering system that combines music, art, fashion, and technology with a new worldwide community — ‘the auras.’” First thing’s first: The HAUS OF GAGA is her creative collective of musical and artistic collaborators, the posse responsible for inventions like her light-up disco stick. As for the app, Gaga isn’t the first big-name artist to try the album-as-app mobile experience — Björk did it in 2011 for Biophilia, and Jay-Z just did last week in a partnership with Samsung — but it sounds like she’s describing an experience resembling a social network here, which is a weird branding move for two reasons: She already has a social network for her fervorous fans, and they already have a name, the Little Monsters. 2. “Altering the human experience with social media, we bring ARTCulture into POP in a reverse Warholian expedition.” The king of the Pop Art movement, Andy Warhol took everyday items like Campbell’s Soup cans and transformed them into iconic and influential images. His screen-printing production methods were cheap, but his pieces sold at high-rolling prices. So does this mean Gaga’s taking something big-budget and inaccessible — like, say, an avant-garde record from one pop’s most powerful and peculiar personalities — and turning it into an everyday item? Though there’s no word on price, that idea seems consistent with previous comments by her manager, Troy Carter, who told a panel audience back in 2011, “If it was up to me, I’d give away the next album and put it on every handset that I can put it on, to get that scale.” 3. “On this day HAUS OF GAGA venges with forte to bring the music industry into a new age; An age where art drives pop, and the artist once again is in control of the icon.” Sounds like Lady Gaga needs to spend more time with Kanye West, who’s also been hell-bent on taking music into a new era since he told the New York Times that he is “undoubtedly, you know, Steve of Internet, downtown, fashion, culture” — as well as the “nucleus” of culture. (Also — venges with forte? What, was “walks with a vengeance” taken?) 4. “The result, a ‘rage’ of electronic passion and …read more

Vampire Weekend burns classic Saab 900 Turbo Convertible for

Filed under:

Last week, we tipped you off about Vampire Weekend and their new music video for the song Diane Young, a short film that consists entirely of setting fire to two perfectly nice-looking Saab 900 automobiles. The indie rock band’s video – viewable by scrolling down – predictably triggered the internet ire of classic car enthusiasts – Saabophiles in particular – and word of the unrest eventually got back to the band itself.

According to music site Spinner (nb: owned by Autoblog parent AOL), the group was “stunned” at the backlash – enough that lead singer Ezra Koenig felt compelled to respond himself. According to Koenig, the band was under the impression that their record company was “looking to purchase the cheapest, oldest cars possible; they weren’t trying to buy a beautiful perfect condition car.” By way of apology, Koenig even goes so far as to note that bandmate Rostam Batmanglij is a keen fan of Saab.

Other reports have claimed that the cars may have been purchased under false pretenses, sold by owners who “wanted to see them go to a nice new home,” but Koenig takes issue with that characterization, countering that he understood that the cars had substantial electrical problems.

Interestingly, more vitriol appears to have been spilled over the fiery deaths of these two Saabs than was drummed up by Jay Z and Kanye West in their music video for Otis, which saw the superstar rappers take a blowtorch to an exponentially costlier Maybach. Either way, Koenig and Co. appear to have at least some regret that they elected to base their video on the song’s opening line, “You torched a Saab like a pile of leaves.”

Did Kim Kardashian Inadvertently Reveal The Sex Of Her Baby On ‘The Tonight Show’? (VIDEO)

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Did Kim Kardashian inadvertently reveal the sex of her baby with Kanye West during her appearance on “The Tonight Show.” It’s not certain, but Jay Leno seems to think she may have by dropping a possible name she was considering.

It happened when they addressed the rumors they’re considering the name North — thus dubbing the baby North West. Kardashian denied these rumors, but suggested something else.

“You know what name I do like, but it probably won’t be on? I do like, because it kind of goes with North, I like Easton. Easton West. I think that’s cute.”

‘I Am A God’: Kanye West Song Name Mistaken For Album Title In Earlier Reports

By The Huffington Post News Editors

The internet had a field day Tuesday with reports that Kanye West was working on an album titled “I Am God,” a rumor that seemed to originate from a parenthetical in a BBC post about what West and Kim Kardashian may name their child (apparently “North” is a name that’s in the running).

Given West‘s habit of being outspoken (and a Rolling Stone cover in which he posed in a crown of thorns), many sites were eager to run with the unattributed factoid. The only problem is that that rumor appears to be a bit of a misunderstanding. A reliable source in West’s camp tells HuffPost Entertainment that the title is actual for an upcoming single, and that the album’s name has yet to be set. The track will be called “I Am A God” (emphasis added).

“We would never be so presumptuous or sacrilegious to call ourselves the supreme being,” the source said. While everyone will have to wait for the actual song to parse the specifics of the song’s message, the source hinted that the idea was generally that all people are manifestations of a higher power.

Stella McCartney Fall 2013

By Christina Perez

Never mind that Bono, Paul McCartney, Kanye West, and Jessica Alba were sitting front row. And never mind that the setting was Paris‘s gorgeous, gilded Opéra Garnier. The clothes on Stella McCartney‘s Fall 2013 runway were plenty spectacular on their own.

But don’t go thinking that means glitter and glitz. Nope, this was pure McCartney, and that means clean, functional, comfortable, and very, very chic. The designer drew inspiration from her past on Saville Row, melding that world’s pinstriped wool and large-scale plaids with oversized cuts and asymmetrical shapes, striking the perfect balance between masculine and feminine all at once. “It was a redirection of Stella classics,” the designer explained. “Things I do instinctively and effortlessly, so paying homage to Britain and its classic tailoring and inserting a new femininity, bringing a sensual woman into it all.”
