Divine Inspiration: Is the New Pope Having an Influence on Designers?

By Justin Fenner

Designers get their inspiration from all sorts of places, people, and ideas, but the latest muse to have an influence on the runway seems to have come from above. In her review of the recent collections shown in Rome, fashion critic Suzy Menkes points to Pope Francis as the reason so many designers turned out simple, conservative pieces that look like nothing so much as chic robes and vestments.

“It’s a whole new spirit in Rome, and this is evident when we have a new pope going back to real Christianity, which lately was far from the church,” said Silvia Venturini Fendi, who co-designs Fendi with Karl Lagerfeld. “People are looking for meaning, and the real meaning of fashion is as a tool to express yourself.”

But will people express themselves with conservative clothing inspired by the pope, who tends to wear simpler, more minimal garb than his Prada-clad predecessor? Or have we simply entered a period when many designers are creating more modernist clothing that’s easy to wear? Tell us what you think about this potential new trend by casting your vote below.

Kristen McMenamy Divorcing Fashion Photographer Miles Aldridge

By Justin Fenner

Amnesty 1987 Ill Be Back SC Amnesty to include a 50 percent increase of legal immigrants if S744 passes

After 16 years, one of the industry’s most iconic marriages is breaking up. Model Kristen McMenamy is divorcing her husband, fashion photographer Miles Aldridge.

McMenamy told The Daily Mail that Aldridge had become “intolerable” to live with, and in their divorce petition, Aldridge admitted to infidelity. The court granted them a decree nisi, which will legally end their marriage this Summer.

But McMenamy, who was walked down the aisle by Karl Lagerfeld and had Naomi Campbell as a bridesmaid at her wedding to Aldridge in 1997, said she and her soon-to-be-ex-husband are on good terms. “We have as good a relationship as you can expect after everything that’s happened,” she said.

Recently, the 46-year-old model has been dating art dealer Ivor Braka, whom she met at a friend’s dinner party a few months ago.

“I sent my pal a cheeky message saying, ‘Seat me next to an eligible bachelor,'” she said. “It turned out to be Ivor.”

Alice Dellal Saddles Up For This Season's Chanel Boy Bag Campaign

By Christina Perez

Alice Dellal reprises her role as the face of Chanel’s Boy Bag with a brand-new campaign for Spring 2013. Posing with a white horse and a hot horse handler (model Jake White), Dellal plays the part of modern equestrienne perfectly, her trademark shaved hair and punk-rock vibe contrasting with her preppy cardigan-and-tie-blouse ensemble nicely. Photographed by Karl Lagerfeld at La Ferme de la Chapelle in Fontaine-Chaalis, the images also call to mind the famous photos of Coco Chanel riding horses with Boy Capel. All the campaign images – plus a look at all the newest Boy Bags – here.

What Is it Going to Take to Get Nicolas Ghesquière Back in Fashion?

By Justin Fenner

If you thought Nicolas Ghesquière would have more time to tend to his new twitter account now that he’s not creative director of a major brand anymore, think again. Word has it the former Balenciaga designer isn’t resting on his laurels, and has had offers to finance his own brand from a number of investors.

Alexa, the fashion arm of The New York Post, reports that firms including Li & Fung and Only the Brave (which owns Diesel) have joined LVMH in offering to back a Ghesquière label, despite some analysts commenting that starting a new luxury brand from scratch is a risky proposition.

“Everyone is trying to get him,” one source told the magazine. But not everyone has been willing or able to meet Ghesquière’s terms, which reportedly include an equity stake in the new venture.

Whenever and however Ghesquière makes his return, he’ll likely be welcomed back to the design world with open arms. Karl Lagerfeld said Ghesquiere starting his own label “is not a bad idea,” and the designer’s personal friend Grace Coddington seemed confident he would find his way back into the industry at some point.

“He will bide his time and come back,” she said in an interview with The Huffington Post. “He’s too brilliant to just disappear. He’s very passionate about what he does.”

Fashion History Lesson Time: The Iconic Chanel Jacket, Explained

By Justin Fenner

The Chanel jacket might have risen to worldwide acclaim in 1954, but its timeless nature owes much to the reason it was created: freedom of movement.

In a new film released by the house, Coco Chanel herself is seen in an interview, explaining that the hardest part of her job is, “enabling women to move with ease, to not feel like they’re in costume. Not changing attitude, or manner, depending on their dress. It’s very difficult. And the human body is always moving.”

But in the early ’50s, the prevailing fashion was highly decorative, wasp-waisted, and decidedly harder to move in than Chanel’s straight-cut tweed jackets and wraparound skirts. It’s no surprise that Chanel’s masculine jacket started what the house rightly calls a revolution in the way women dress. Since the ’80s, when Karl Lagerfeld took over the house, the jacket has been shown in scores of different fabrics and colors, but the spirit of the original design (and the way they’re made) remains intact.

A look at what led to its creation in the video below.

Did Keira Knightley's Chanel Ad Deserve to Be Banned?

By Justin Fenner

Not safe for children? Britain’s Advertising Standards Authority has banned Keira Knightley‘s commercial for Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle fragrance from airing during programs aimed at kids, deeming it too “sexually suggestive.”

The ad, in which Karl Lagerfeld describes the actress’s character as a sort of Chanel superwoman, Knightley is seen riding a motorcycle to a photo shoot. Once there, a male photographer flirtatiously helps her out of her jumpsuit and boots, but before he knows what’s happening, Knightley is fully dressed – helmet and all – riding away from the set.

In explaining its decision to ban the ad, the ASA pointed to a “clear sexual tension” between Knightley’s character and the photographer and noted that “the photographer was directly involved in unzipping the actress’ garments and that there was a suggestion that she was naked aside from a bed sheet . . . We considered the ad was suitable for older children, but that the sexually suggestive material was unsuitable for young children.”

Is the ad really too racy for kids? Take a look at it below and tell us what you think.

Watch: Marc Jacobs Takes His Shirt Off For Diet Coke

By Justin Fenner

If sexy sells, Diet Coke should experience a huge sales lift in 2013. The soda brand has tapped Marc Jacbos as its creative director for this year, and he’s already reprised the brand’s very shirtless ’90s Diet Coke Man commercial, and posed as a pinup for a print campaign.

“I still think it’s hysterical people want me to take my shirt off,” Jacobs said in an interview with WWD. “You know, I’m going to be 50 in two months, so I guess I should be glad. It feels like the decade of me taking my shirt off.”

In the new commercial, three young women including model Ginta Lapina see the designer’s trademark black boots and kilt sticking out of a photo booth. They fawn over the pictures that come out of the booth’s printer, and then pull back the curtain to find a half-naked Jacobs wiping sweat from his brow. (No one ever said being a sex symbol wasn’t hard work.)

Jacobs, who joins Karl Lagerfeld and Jean Paul Gaultier in the growing group of designers who’ve worked with Diet Coke, also created “whimsical, feminine” designs for the soda, which celebrates its 30th anniversary on European shelves this year. Three cans and three bottles will make their way into Europe by next month. His chest-baring campaign, shot by Stéphane Sednaoui, will make their print debut mid-March. The commercial and the images, however, are already online. A look at them here in the gallery.

Business, Man: Christian Dior Couture Sales Increase by 24 Percent

By Justin Fenner

Looks like hiring announced that sales of its couture collections in 2012 were up some 24 percent over the previous year.

But it’s not just the garments from Simons’s debut Fall 2012 Couture collection, or Bill Gaytten’s Spring 2012 Couture collection – which was well recieved – that experienced such high sales. Dior’s various product ranges saw worldwide sales of €1.24 billion last year, or about $1.59 billion at current exchange. It amounts to a 17 percent growth in sales year over year. (It’s worth noting that in 2011, the year John broke the $1 billion mark for the first time in its history.)

“These results reaffirm the exceptional quality of Dior’s products and the powerful appeal of its stores,” the company said in a statement.

That’s not all those figures indicate. By and large, they say that the customer base for couture is growing – and that it isn’t afraid to spend. Chanel’s couturier Karl Lagerfeld told The New York Times recently that clients have sent their private planes to Paris to pick up his couture tailors. And in addition to New York, those planes now also come from nations with rapidly expanding or robust economies like China, Russia, and Saudia Arabia. In late 2011, Reuters reported that women in the Middle East were the world’s biggest consumers of couture.

Then, too, there’s Simons’s desire to “change the psychology of people who are interested in couture.” In an interview about his first couture collection for Dior, Simons said he wanted “to make it more dynamic, appeal to a person who has a different energy. A younger person, in mind, not necessarily in age.”

Has he succeeded? His talent for making clothing a variety of women want to wear – and are willing to pay for – is clearly making a big difference at Dior.

The company announced that Lagerfeld would photograph some of its iconic designs in November, and the images he created will be on display at Cassina’s Paris showroom from Jan. 31 to Mar. 10.

Karl Lagerfeld Sells New York Apartment For $4.5 Million

By Justin Fenner

After several attempts to sell his apartment overlooking Gramercy Park, Karl Lagerfeld has finally made a deal.

Lagerfeld sold his three-bedroom, three-bathroom condo at 50 Gramercy Park North for $4.5 million, according to The New York Post. He paid $6.69 million for it in 2006, and though he had it renovated, he never moved in. CasaSugar reported last March that home had been relisted for $5.2 million.

Investor Sebastian Barrack bought the fashionable apartment, which features a chef’s kitchen, a system of automated curtains, and an open floor plan spanning 2,150 square feet. A look at the place here in the gallery.

On the Street and in the Front Row: The Best Snaps From the Men's Shows

By Christina Perez

It’s always Fashion Week somewhere, right? With Pitti Uomo just finishing in Florence, the men’s collections recently wrapping in London, and the men’s ready-to-wear lines now walking Milan, that new adage has certainly felt truer than over the last few weeks. Thankfully, those recent reasons for hustle have not disappointed – especially in the street-style department. So far in Milan alone there have been glimpses of Tamu McPherson working her magic in vivid hues, Anna Dello Russo giving “borrowed from the boys” a new spin in smart little suits, and Candela Novembre showing her support for the Kaiser in a black-and-white Karl Lagerfeld baseball jacket.

See all those, plus the best front-row and street snaps from Pitti and London, right here in the slideshow.
