Report: Ford to build next F-150, outgoing model concurrently?

Ford's Atlas-based F-150 testing spy photo

Filed under:

Ford is rumored to be considering concurrent production for old and new F-150 models in a bid to minimize supply chain disruptions and inventory. Automotive News is reporting that the Blue Oval will build both the current F-150 and its replacement, which we showed you testing just last month, side by side for about half a year before switching over entirely to next-generation production.

As IHS Automotive analyst Mike Jackson told AN, “In order to ramp up, you have to retool…and that means you have to take capacity offline.” Building both models alongside could allow Ford to cope with the still strong demand for the current F-150, while populating dealer supplies and working out supply chain kinks for the new model before making a full-time switch.

A loss of capacity when demand is so strong, even for a short period, could spell bad news for Ford, which nets an estimated 90 percent of its global profit on pickups and large SUVs. As AN states, Ford produces the F-150 in both Kansas City, Missouri and Dearborn, Michigan, which allows it to maintain some degree of flexibility in production. The new F-150 is expected to arrive at the 2014 North American International Auto Show as a 2015 model, with a design inspired by the Atlas Concept first shown at the Detroit Auto Show last January.

Ticket Prices for MLB's All Star Game Are High, But Can't Compete with NBA Edition

By Jesse Lawrence, Contributor

Until recently, All Star games in major league sports were purely exercises in exhibition.  Then in 2003 baseball added some significance to the game, by giving the winning league home field advantage in the World Series. This change, however, has not elevated the Mid-Summer classic to the most sought after All Star ticket.  That title belongs to the NBA. Along with Bloomberg, TiqIQ analyzed the premium paid for the last 11 All Star contests across Baseball, Basketball, Football and Hockey.  The get this premium we divided the average price of the All Star Game by the league ticket average during then corresponding regular season.  As the below chart illustrates, the NBA is the clear winner, with premiums of  1,852% in 2011, 1,674% last year in Houston and 710% in 2010 in Orlando.  Comparatively, the highest premium for a Major League baseball All Star game in the last three years is 1,196% for this year’s game at Citi Field, followed by 1,016% for last year’s game at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. Tuesday’s All-Star game at Citi Field marks the second time the Mets have hosted the game and the 7th time that a New York team has hosted the midsummer classic. As far as baseball All Star Games go, this one ranks high on the demand curve.  In fact, it’s the most expensive MLB All Star Game over the last three years, with an average price of $855 compared to $576 last year and $294 in Arizona in 2011.  The cheapest 500-level ticket on TiqIQ is $310 from our partner eBay and the cheapest 100-level ticket is $365 from our partners at Razorgator. At the other end of the premium spectrum is the NFL’s All Star Game, the Pro Bowl. Played annually in Hawaii, it’s the only game that comes at the end of the season, as opposed to at the midway point.  Whether it is the timing or the location, the Pro Bowl has historically been a dud at the box office.  Last year, the average price to the Pro Bowl actually sold at a discount to the league’s season average, by -16.2%. …read more

Mail carrier who sent dud pipe bombs apologizes

A former Iowa letter carrier who sent threatening letters and dud pipe bombs to investment firms has apologized in a federal courtroom in Chicago, telling a judge that he is ashamed of what he did.

John Tomkins, known as “The Bishop” bomber because he signed his notes with that moniker, made the apology at a pre-sentencing hearing Friday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported (http://bit.ly/Z6L0Cg ).

“Let me start by saying how incredibly sorry I am,” Tomkins told the judge. “There are no words to describe the shame and disappointment I feel in myself.”

In court testimony last year, Tomkins admitted to sending threatening letters and nonfunctioning bombs to investment advisers from 2005 to early 2007 as part of an extortion scheme intended to drive up the value of stocks he owned.

A jury found the Dubuque, Iowa, native guilty of all 12 charges he faced. Judge Robert Dow says he will sentence Tomkins May 21.

The letters contained threats to kill the recipients, their families or neighbors unless they took steps to raise the price of 3COM Corp. and Navarre Corp. stocks. Packages included notes reading, “BANG! YOU’RE DEAD.”

On Friday, Tomkins repeated his insistence that he carefully designed the bombs so they would never explode, not even by accident.

Prosecutors allege that the bombs, mailed from a suburban Chicago post office in 2007, were real and would have exploded had all the wires been attached. One package was sent to an address in Denver and another to Kansas City, Mo.

Federal prosecutor Patrick Pope said Friday that the bombs could have brought down a plane while in the postal system and the 17 people who received extortion letters from Tomkins were “terrorized.”

He argued for a sentence of 42 to 45 years. That is 12 to 15 more years than the mandatory minimum of 30 years.

Google Paying $1 For $39 Million Fiber Service In Utah

By The Huffington Post News Editors

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Google Inc. will pay $1 for a municipal fiber-optic system that cost $39 million to build, according to terms of the Internet company’s agreement with Provo.

The deal is widely expected to be approved Tuesday by the City Council, making Provo the third city selected by Google for high-speed Internet and television service.

Google is already operating a fiber-optic system in Kansas City, Mo., and earlier this month it selected Austin, Texas, as a second candidate.

How Google Hopes to Liberate America From Cable Captivity

Let’s face it: America is being held captive. That’s the case that law professor Susan P. Crawford makes in her book Captive Audience, which describes the current monopolistic state of the telecommunications industry.

When it comes to the Internet, a technology that has unarguably revolutionized the world and the global economy, America severely lags behind other countries. We’re talking about a technology that America created, yet the average American is relegated to inferior speeds compared with other parts of the world, and many rural areas don’t even have broadband service.

A sad status quo
In many ways, Internet access can be considered a necessary utility nowadays, much like electricity. Unfortunately, the people who can afford it are paying too much, while there’s still a large chunk of the population that can’t afford it at all.

One reason for this sad status quo is that the sector inherently requires an oligopoly structure. Not everyone can afford spending $19.7 billion on infrastructure, which is what AT&T dropped on capital expenditures last year, in addition to the $20.3 billion spent in 2011.

Along the way, the industry became segregated into wired and wireless sectors. Comcast and Time Warner Cable dominated the wired side, while AT&T and Verizon primarily call the shots in wireless.

With wired connections, most of the networks around the country are built with antiquated copper wires. Some companies have built high-speed fiber optic networks, but that’s a costly upgrade. Verizon began building its FiOS network in 2006 but has since reversed course and won’t expand beyond its current obligations. It simply wasn’t worth it to invest in FiOS, since it would still be too hard to compete.

Barring a consumer uprising, there’s little incentive for wired incumbents to invest heavily in fiber optic networks when they can hinder competition in other ways.

Enter Google Fiber.

Liberation!
The search giant’s gigabit fiber optic service promises Internet speeds up to 100 times what the average American has and represents a truly disruptive threat to the wired telecom sector.

Thus far, the company’s big push into becoming an Internet service provider, or ISP, has mostly been relegated in Kansas City, which straddles the state line between Kansas and Missouri. Kansas City has a little over 600,000 people, combining both sides. The company just announced its plans to expand Google Fiber deep in the heart of Texas, bringing the service to Austin. The Live Music Capital of the World boasts a population of more than 820,000.

For fortunate residents within Google Fiber‘s growing footprint, the decision is a no-brainer compared with current offerings. Google hasn’t finished pricing in Austin yet, where I live, but I’m currently paying about $60 per month before taxes and fees for a 20 Mbps connection from Time Warner Cable. The Kansas City pricing is $70 per month for a Gigabit (1,000 Mbps) connection. Boost my speed by 50 times for an

Colorado teen pleads not guilty in murder of 10-year-old girl

A Colorado teen pleaded not guilty Friday to murder and kidnapping in the kidnap-slaying and dismemberment of a 10-year-old girl that panicked Denver-area residents last fall — despite police testimony that the suspect confessed to the crime.

Austin Sigg, 18, stunned a courtroom by entering the not guilty pleas in the death of Jessica Ridgeway in the Denver suburb of Westminster. Sigg also pleaded not guilty to a May attack on a 22-year-old jogger at a lake in Jessica’s neighborhood.

Sigg’s not guilty pleas came despite his alleged confession and the discovery of some of the girl’s remains at his home.

Jessica disappeared while walking to school on Oct. 5, leading parents to take extraordinary precautions to keep their children safe. Residents were encouraged to report suspicious behavior by neighbors.

If convicted, Sigg would face life in prison with the possibility of parole after 40 years. He cannot face the death penalty because he was 17 at the time of the slaying.

Sigg is charged with murder, kidnapping, sexual assault and robbery. Prosecutors added three counts of sexual exploitation of a child because child pornography was allegedly found during the investigation. Sigg denied to investigators that he sexually assaulted Jessica.

Jessica, a fifth grader, disappeared after she left her house to meet a friend two blocks away on their way to school. Hundreds of police and residents searched for her, and parents escorted their children to and from school. The FBI asked residents to report suspicious behavior by friends, neighbors and even family members. Her torso was found in a secluded park Oct. 10.

A resident contacted authorities Oct. 19 to report Sigg because he reportedly had a fascination with death, Westminster police Detective Luis Lopez testified at a preliminary hearing. Two FBI agents took a DNA sample from Sigg. His mother called 911 on Oct. 23, saying he wanted to confess. Lopez said Sigg’s DNA was found on Jessica’s clothing.

Investigators said Sigg told them that some of Jessica’s remains were hidden in a crawl space in his mother’s home, where he lived.

Detectives said he described how he abducted Jessica as she walked past his car, bound her arms and her legs, drove around for a little bit then took her to his house. There, he told investigators, he tried to strangle her and then used his hands to kill her. He also allegedly told investigators that he dismembered Jessica in a bathtub.

Lopez testified that Sigg attended a community college and took classes in mortuary sciences.

Jessica’s father lives in the Kansas City, Mo., area.

Jackie's legacy celebrated at '42' premiere in KC

By Dick Kaegel This wasn’t your Hollywood red-carpet movie premiere. Not with a brooding grey sky, a breezy 41 degrees and a theater complex set inside a suburban shopping mall. This was Thursday night in chilly Kansas City and yet here came film star Harrison Ford, working his way down the red carpet at the Kansas City premiere of the movie “42,” the story of how Jackie Robinson and Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey, portrayed by Ford, broke baseball’s color line in 1947.
