ITT Exelis to provide anti-jam GPS antennas for KC-46 refueling aircraft
BOHEMIA, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– ITT Exelis (NYSE: XLS) has received a contract from Raytheon Company (NYS: RTN) to supply anti-jam GPS antennas to the KC-46 refueling tanker program. Work on this contract will be performed in Bohemia, N.Y.
The rugged N79 Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna, or CRPA, prevents deliberate jamming and unintentional interference of timing signals when integrated with anti-jam GPS systems including the Raytheon Navshield and Advanced Digital Antenna Production systems. The antenna keeps an aircraft’s GPS system connected in the presence of multiple threats.
“For the U.S. Air Force to perform its Global Power and Global Reach missions, a reliable air-to-air refueling capability is required,” said Exelis Senior Director of Programs for Antennas, Sensors and Microelectronics Paul Eyring. “The Exelis CRPA helps mitigate signals that interfere with aircraft systems and thus helps the KC-46 perform its fuel delivery mission, keeping aircraft airborne.”
Exelis has delivered hundreds of anti-jam GPS antennas to U.S. and allied militaries for use on fixed and rotary-wing aircraft, ships and unmanned platforms.

By Dick Kaegel This wasn’t your Hollywood red-carpet movie premiere. Not with a brooding grey sky, a breezy 41 degrees and a theater complex set inside a suburban shopping mall. This was Thursday night in chilly Kansas City and yet here came film star Harrison Ford, working his way down the red carpet at the Kansas City premiere of the movie “42,” the story of how Jackie Robinson and Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey, portrayed by Ford, broke baseball’s color line in 1947.

Kansas City leaders think a new law enforcement approach that offers incentives for convicted and would-be criminals to change their ways can help lower a local murder rate five times higher than the national average.
The “No Violence Alliance,” or NoVA, is designed to fight violent crime by identifying criminal networks and letting even the most fringe members know they are being watched.
NoVA is patterned after a “focused deterrence” model created in Boston in the mid-1990s. It offers social services to help offenders break away from criminal elements while promising harsh penalties — including long federal prison sentences — for those who don’t.
A study released last year found that nine of 10 Ceasefire-like programs experienced “strong and statistically significant crime reductions associated with the approach.”

Earnings season is just about over, with almost all companies already having reported their quarterly results. But there are still a few companies left to report, and SAIC is about to release its quarterly earnings. The key to making smart investment decisions with stocks releasing their quarterly reports is to anticipate how they’ll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever inevitable surprises arise. That way, you’ll be less likely to make an uninformed knee-jerk reaction to news that turns out to be exactly the wrong move.
SAIC plays a vital role in the way that the U.S. and foreign governments gather intelligence and respond to threats, providing technical services like engineering, research, and systems integration for the Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security, among others. Let’s take an early look at what’s been happening with SAIC over the past quarter and what we’re likely to see in its quarterly report on Tuesday.

Will SAIC keep investors safe this quarter?
Over the past few months, analysts have given mixed signals about SAIC. They’ve boosted their earnings projections for the just-ended quarter by a penny per share, but they’ve reduced their fiscal 2014 calls by $0.02 per share. The share price, though, has been unequivocally positive, rising 12% since mid-December.
At first, it may sound surprising to hear that a company so intimately linked to the U.S. government would be doing well. With sequestration having taken effect, defense-spending cuts have hurt companies throughout the industry. Even companies with major contracts are feeling the pinch, as Boeing has had to face the potential for cuts to its KC-46 tanker project. Lockheed Martin has received substantial criticism recently about its F-35 fighter contract and the cost overruns that have plagued it over the years.
But SAIC has worked its way into essential niche areas. In particular, cybersecurity has become a hot area in the defense and intelligence community, especially in light of accusations that Chinese hackers are trying to penetrate government and private-sector networks to gain valuable information. With SAIC working with Intel‘s McAfee division to develop stronger firewalls to withstand cloud-based attacks, major defense contractors are looking to incorporate cybersecurity solutions into their broader contracts, which could give SAIC more subcontract work in the future.
Last month, SAIC announced plans to split into two companies. One will deal with national security, health care, and engineering and will be named Leidos. The other will continue to carry the SAIC name and concentrate on technical services and enterprise information technology.
In its quarterly report, watch for SAIC to give more commentary about the effect of sequestration on its business, as well …read more

Google Fiber, the company’s new ultra-fast internet service, is expanding its existing coverage area. According to a recent announcement posted on Google’s Fiber blog, the city council of Olathe, Kan., located in the greater Kansas City area, has approved an agreement that will bring Fiber to the fast growing region. Olathe will be Fiber’s third market in the area; both Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., have Fiber service currently available.
Fiber, according to Google, provides Internet connection speeds as much as 100 times as fast as broadband. Rachel Hack, community manager of the Google Fiber blog, said, “Hopefully, this is the first of several announcements that we’ll be able to make about bringing Google Fiber to additional cities in the KC metro area, so stay tuned.”
With the Olathe City Council‘s approval, Google can begin the planning, engineering, and construction phases needed to make Fiber available to area residents. A projected date for completion of the Fiber infrastructure in Olathe is unknown, but Google will “publish an update as soon as we have it.”

Pall Corp. to Supply Hydraulic Filters for Embraer KC-390 Aircraft
PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Pall Corporation (NYSE: PLL), a global leader in filtration, separation and purification, has signed a 30-year agreement with Brazilian aerospace innovator Embraer S.A. to supply hydraulic filter manifolds and assemblies for KC-390 aircraft. The Embraer KC-390 is a medium-size military jet under development that relies on a sophisticated “fly-by-wire” (electronic) flight control system. The Pall filter manifolds will purify the pressurized hydraulic fluids that power the KC-390’s flight control systems, cargo door, and landing gears against contamination, thereby enhancing aircraft reliability. The first shipments are expected by the end of 2013.
Pall will supply hydraulic filter manifolds and assemblies for Embraer KC-390 aircraft. (Photo: Business Wire)
Contaminants can be introduced into hydraulic system fluids from the environment, during manufacturing and routine maintenance, and from component wear. If this contamination is not removed it will recirculate, potentially causing corrosion, fluid degradation, reduced system efficiency and, eventually, failure of the associated components. Fine filtration and purification remove minute particles and water to improve the service life, reliability and performance of the hydraulic system components. To bolster protection for the KC-390’s power systems, Pall is customizing hydraulic manifolds and assemblies based on the latest filtration technology in accordance with Embraer’s specifications.
Pall’s association with Embraer dates back to the 1970s and has evolved through the years. “Pall is pleased to be teaming with Embraer on the KC-390 strategic alliance,” said Mark Morris, president, Pall Aeropower Corp. “We’re looking forward to building on the current relationship and collaborating with Embraer on future aircraft applications.”

Pall Aerospace provides filtration and separation solutions for a broad range of commercial and military fluid applications, including air, fuel, lube, hydraulic and transmission. Its filter products are used on major aircraft platforms and ground service and military equipment worldwide. Pall Aeropower Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pall Corporation.
