SimCity Sells More Than 1 Million at Launch

Digital Sales Drive Record-Breaking Performance

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Electronic Arts Inc. (NAS: EA) today announced that SimCity™ recorded more than 1.1 million units sold through in the first two weeks, making this the biggest SimCity launch of all time. Roughly 54 percent of those sales have been of digital versions of the game, downloaded directly to players’ PCs via Origin™ or other digital download services.

SimCity had a great weekend with sales strong across both North America and Europe, adding to overwhelming demand at launch that has us tracking well beyond expectations for the game,” said Peter Moore, Chief Operating Officer for EA. “SimCity is one of the storied brands in gaming, and Maxis delivered a game re-envisioned and engineered for the online age.”

Gamers have logged on to SimCity via Origin in record numbers, with 44 percent of SimCity sales delivered via EA‘s direct-to-consumer digital download service. SimCity gamers have also helped set new records for peak concurrent users on Origin, now at 1.3 million and rising.

In just two weeks:

  • SimCity players have logged more than 15 million hours of online gameplay.
  • More than 5.7 million original cities have been created since launch.
  • More than 780 million buildings have been built.
  • SimCity mayors to date have built enough road and railroad tracks to circle the globe more than 40,000 times.

The Maxis™ studio also continues to enhance both the core SimCity game and the online service infrastructure; in the last two weeks, they have increased server capacity by more than 400%, optimized server response times by 40 times, and deployed fixes to address players’ direct feedback on game performance.

Everything is intelligently simulated in this new SimCity, from all of the Sims in a city, to every kilowatt of power pulsing through a region thanks to the powerful GlassBox Engine. It is the most expansive city management game yet where multi-city gameplay across regions delivers a larger playing field. No …read more

Offline Mode is Not Part of SimCity’s 'Vision'

Maxis has publicly addressed player concerns over their decision to use always-online DRM.

While we know the SimCity team’s been hard at work honing the game, recent updates have been more focused on enhancing the simulative aspects rather than addressing the server issues that have plagued players, with the latter not even warranting a mention in the last update on the SimCity blog. Now the General Manager of Maxis, Lucy Bradshaw, has finally decided to give us some “straight answers” on SimCity’s most talked-about issue – the always-online DRM.

Writing at the EA blog, Bradshaw admits that an offline play mode could have been included. “But we rejected that idea because it didn’t fit with our vision,” she says.

Battlefield 4 Reveal Coming Soon

Update: EA has now provided an updated version of the invitation, confirming that the event will indeed be the official unveiling of Battlefield 4.

EA is teasing an announcement at this month’s Game Developer’s Conference. In an invitation sent to IGN, EA reminds potential attendees to “save the date” and advertises an event on March 26th at a movie theater.

Interestingly, the invitation includes a familiar color palette that’s extremely similar to the box art for Battlefield 3. Given that Battlefield 4 was recently shown to retailers and has yet to see an official announcement, could this be when EA will finally reveal the sequel?

Northrop Wins $174 Million Pentagon Contract

By Rich Smith, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

For the second time this week, Northrop Grumman has won a contract related to its LITENING Targeting Pod System. On Tuesday, the Pentagon awarded Northrop $7.1 million for sensor enhancement work on the system. On Thursday, though, the Pentagon gave Northrop a much more substantial order — $173.6 million in the form of a firm-fixed-price, cost-reimbursable-no-fee, time and material contract for sustainment of LITENING. Work on this contract is to be completed by December 31, 2017.

Northrop describes LITENING as a “self-contained, multi-sensor targeting and surveillance system” used to “detect, acquire, auto-track and identify targets at extremely long ranges for weapon delivery” (i.e. shooting at). LITENING is also said to be useful for “nontraditional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.”

The targeting pod is in use by both the U.S. Air Force, the USMC, and eight allied foreign countries — Australia, Denmark, Finland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. It is installed aboard Block 30, 40, and 50 F-16 fighter jets, aboard the A-10C Warthog, the F-15E Strike Eagle, the B-52 bomber, F/A-18 C/D fighter bomber, the AV-8B Harrier, and the EA-6B electronic warfare aircraft.

Road Rash Creator Wants Series to Return

Road Rash creator Dan Geisler has stated he’ll look into creating a new Road Rash game if enough people are keen on the idea.

Geisler made the announcement on Reddit when answering a question about why the series never reappeared, but explained he’d probably have to look to crowd-funding to get the project off the ground.

“It hasn’t resurfaced because I was burned out after Road Rash 3,” he explained. “But I’m ready to do another one now. I just needed 20 years off.

“I’m ready to make a better one now. I miss playing it too. If there is enough interest, I’ll do a Kickstart on it.”

He then posted a picture of himself with yesterday’s date, effectively silencing critics who were questioning his identity, before continuing, “I am who I say. Road Rash was my baby. I will need to talk with EA to get the rights. But I don’t think they have a lock on motorcycle combat any more.”

Trio of Former Firemint Senior Devs Found New Studio

Three former senior developers at Melbourne, Australia’s Firemint have today announced their new studio: Loveshack Entertainment. The team has also revealed its debut project, Framed, a narrative-based puzzle game in which players must rewrite the story.

Kiwi Joshua Boggs and Adrian Moore from the UK, who shared the lead development role on Firemint’s SPY Mouse, have been joined by Australian Ollie Browne, another games designer who left Firemonkeys more recently (the studio’s name after EA merged Firemint with Iron Monkeys).

“Josh and I really clicked when we worked together on SPY mouse. But we were also both finding that whilst we loved working at Firemint, we wanted to stretch our creative muscles outside of a larger company,” said Moore, co-founder of Loveshack Entertainment. “With Ollie joining the team, we’re now ready to unleash our love on the world.”

Video Game Companies Are Hitting New Highs?

By Rick Munarriz, Munarriz, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Electronic Arts hit a fresh 52-week high this week.

It’s not alone. Larger rival Activision Blizzard also hit a new 52-week high last week.

The newfound investor admiration comes at a surprising time. Video game sales have been sputtering for three years, and video game retailer GameStop has hosed down its same-store sales outlook four times over the past year. It also didn’t help that November’s launch of Nintendo’s Wii U — the first new console in years and a long-awaited catalyst to breathe new life into the moribund industry — is off to a disappointing start.

EA‘s recent financials also aren’t exactly encouraging.

The video game pioneer’s holiday quarter was a dud. Last month’s quarterly report saw adjusted revenue decline 28% to $1.2 billion, falling short of its earlier guidance. Adjusted net income tumbled 47% to $176 million.

There will be quarterly lumpiness at any video game publisher, but even if we look out at the trailing 12 months we see adjusted revenue slipping and adjusted profitability cut by more than half.

It’s not all bleak for EA. Digital revenue is up nicely, and EA was the top iOS publisher in 2012. FIFA 13 has sold more than 12 million copies through the end of December, and Battlefield 3 Premium is off to a strong start with nearly 3 million subscribers.

However, the real reason to get excited about EA is the future. There are some favorable trends working in the favor of software companies including EA that will play out in the coming months.

Reports last month indicate that Microsoft‘s next Xbox system will incorporate activation codes on software installations that will prevent used games from being passed along. This is bad news for GameStop and other retailers that rely on trade-ins and resales, but it’s promising news for the software companies that never profited from the secondhand sales and trades.

Sony‘s PS4 had similar rumors circulating, but that wasn’t highlighted during a Feb. 20 unveiling event. However, the PS4 runs on a new chip that won’t be compatible with earlier PlayStation games. This should stimulate initial sales of new software. Sony is also playing up the chunky hard drive storage capacity of the new system and a streaming service, and these are things that bode well for EA‘s digital initiatives, where margins can be pretty generous.

Naturally, it will be up to the diehard gamers to make this work. If the software developer-favoring features of the new Xbox and PS4 aren’t received well by the public the industry will be in for another year of shrinking sales. However, EA‘s ability to milk more out of a stagnant and possibly declining market is enough to make EA investors the wealthiest that they’ve been all year.

The game continues.

EA and ESPN Kick Off Madden NFL 25 Cover Vote

The Old School Challenges the New School in the Biggest Cover Vote Yet with Winner to be Revealed Live on SportsNation on April 24

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Electronic Arts Inc. (NAS: EA) and ESPN today announced the official players and brackets for the Madden NFL 25 Cover Vote. The vote will include two brackets, one composed of 32 new-school NFL stars and one of 32 old-school NFL legends, with the winner of each bracket facing off in the finals for the right to appear on the cover. The Madden NFL Cover Vote has proven to be extremely popular with the fans, garnering over 33 million votes since its introduction in 2011.

The new school vs. old school format is especially fitting for the 25th anniversary of the Madden NFL franchise, as this edition of the game both celebrates the past while laying a strong foundation for the future. The name Madden NFL 25 was chosen in celebration of the franchise’s silver anniversary, and the game will launch on August 27.

Throughout the competition, fans can vote for all their favorites by visiting ESPN.com/MaddenVote starting today with all 32 old-school and new-school matchups. And, for the first time ever, SportsNation will debut a limited window of live Twitter voting during their show every Tuesday from 4-5 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Voting starts now and will continue up until the reveal of the winner on Wednesday, April 24.

The first round of the competition promises to offer plenty of excitement, with several high-profile matchups. In the old-school bracket Hall-of-Famer Curtis Martin takes on former Pittsburgh Steeler Jerome Bettis in a battle between two of the top running backs of the previous decade; while in the new-school bracket feared Broncos linebacker Von Miller will do his best to prevent New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz from salsa dancing into the next round.

Over the past week ESPN has hosted a special Wild Card Round via Twitter with Hall of Fame wide receivers Cris Carter and Jerry Rice going toe-to-toe to decide who would earn the last slot in the old-school bracket. Today Jerry Rice took the honors, and will test himself against former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Fred Taylor in the opening round.

EA making progress fixing SimCity problems

Electronic Arts isn’t able to say Game On quite yet to all SimCity fans, but it says it has made “huge progress” fixing problems that tarnished the March 5 release.

Its servers are now responding 40 times faster than at launch while the franchise is seeing reduced downtimes. While the server upgrades are good news, the improvements are late coming.

For days, players have complained of problems connecting with SimCity’s servers, while some players who did get online lost progress in the game, were kicked out of their games or were forced to suffer long downtimes after each failed connection.

Problems with the online-only game were so egregious that at one point Amazon even stopped selling the city-building game .

2 Big Reasons to Buy Activision Blizzard

By Steve Symington, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Thanks largely to the positive fallout from its incredible fourth0quarter earnings report last month, shares of gaming specialist Activision Blizzard are up more than 40% so far this year, finally ending a nearly three-year cycle of relatively flat trading during which the market refused to take note of the gaming stalwart’s industry prowess.

Does this mean, then, that prospective investors have missed the boat? Absolutely not.

To the contrary, investors should have every reason to believe Activision will continue its impressive rise. Fool.com co-founder David Gardner regularly recognizes that winning businesses tend to keep on winning, and in 2012, Activision posted its strongest-ever year, setting records for both GAAP net revenue of $4.86 billion and earnings per share of $1.01.

With that, here are two other big reasons you should consider making Activision part of your portfolio.

All that cash
First of all, Activision managed to generate massive operating cash flow of more than $1.3 billion in 2012. While Activision’s most recent results were certainly helped by unusually strong holiday sales of its games, the company has managed to generate a total of more than $4.8 billion of operating cash flow over the past four years.

In addition, Activision remains intent on returning capital to patient shareholders, as evidenced by its spending $3.8 billion since 2009 on dividends and share repurchases. In fact, just last month the company increased its annual dividend for the third year in a row to its current level of $0.19 per share.

Even so, noting that the company began 2013 with $4.4 billion in cash on its books — more than a quarter of its entire market capitalization, mind you — Activision CFO Dennis Durkin still isn’t content with the company’s efforts to create shareholder value. During the most recent earnings conference call, Durkin said the company “may consider [additional] substantial stock repurchases dividends, acquisitions, licensing, or other non-ordinary course transactions and significant debt refinancing.”

Domination where it counts
Next, while the rest of the world seems obsessed with mobile’s so-called “freemium” games — of the Angry Birds variety with which Zynga built its name — it’s easy to forget that companies such as Zynga struggle mightily only to eke out meager profits.

Meanwhile, Activision doesn’t need to resort to playing online poker to stay afloat. Instead, it’s happy to continue focusing on the tiny details that make its massively popular full-featured games truly great, helping it to dominate the truly profitable core gaming markets.

How, then, does Activision maintain its edge over competitors such as Electronic Arts and Take-Two Interactive ? Rather than relying primarily on the initial sale of its games for profit as EA (with its many sports-centric titles) and Take-Two (with its Grand Theft Auto franchise) do, Activision enjoys massive, predictable streams of recurring subscription revenue from wildly popular games such as World of Warcraft, which boasted more than 9.6 million monthly subscribers at the end of 2012.

Naturally, then, even after all those …read more

Maxis Apologizes, SimCity Players Get Free Game

Releasing SimCity has been a bit of a fiasco for developer Maxis and publisher EA. The game simply isn’t working for a lot of gamers, which at first caused EA to disable “non-critical features” in the game. The issues are caused by SimCity’s always-online DRM, causing us to wonder aloud if such an anti-piracy system should be avoided completely. EA has even pulled its marketing for the game.

Something to Dull the Pain: EA Gifting Free Game to SimCity Players

By Paul Tassi, Contributor

Another update in the never ending saga that is the SimCity launch debacle. Maxis General Manager Lucy Bradshaw just made a post over on EA‘s website that accomplishes two things. 1) It’s meant to be a down to earth apology for the problems so far, promising they’ll be fixed soon: “So what went wrong?  The short answer is: a lot more people logged on than we expected.  More people played and played in ways we never saw in the beta. OK, we agree, that was dumb, but we are committed to fixing it.” And 2) Hey look, free stuff! It’s this part that might catch some attention: “To get us back in your good graces, we’re going to offer you a free PC download game from the EA portfolio.  On March 18, SimCity players who have activated their game will receive an email telling them how to redeem their free game. …read more

SimCity Marketing Pulled by EA

SimCity has had its fair share of problems since launch. EA knows this, and they have made the decision to temporarily stop actively promoting the city-building game, at least online.

In a memo sent to affiliates (and obtained by IGN), EA asks for active promotion for SimCity to cease. The company has deactivated all links in Origin’s LinkShare program, which a lot of companies use to promote EA games.

SimCity & Amazon: Site Temporarily Suspends Sales Of Game, Posts Warning About Server Issues

By The Huffington Post News Editors

Despite positive reviews from many critics, EA‘s disastrous SimCity launch might go down as one of the worst debacles in the history of gaming. How bad is it? So bad that Amazon briefly stopped selling SimCity not 48 hours after its launch.

According to the BBC, Amazon temporarily suspended digital sales of SimCity on March 7 after customers complained that they were not able to connect to the game’s servers. While the sale of the game resumed after a few hours, there is now a warning alerting potential buyers to EA‘s ongoing server woes.

SimCity, the latest iteration of the classic city-building simulation, requires players to be online to play. That aspect is a game-changer in the literal sense; previous titles in the series were single-player, standalone applications.
