7 Common Excuses That Prevent an Employee From Being Great

By John Hall, Contributor

It’s usually easier to come up with an excuse than it is to actually get something done. I’ve learned that many employees have the potential to be great, but they let excuses get in the way of their true potential. As a leader, it’s important to address these excuses and challenge your employees to be better. Here are some excuses that send my “BS meter” off the charts.

Hannibal: "Amuse-Bouche" Review

By Eric Goldman

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

While the second episode of Hannibal did introduce a new “killer of the week”, I was also very happy to see plenty of fallout from what occurred in the pilot, as it became clear there was no easy “well, that’s all over” procedural vibe here.

The fact that Will Graham had never killed someone and had “just pulled the trigger ten times”, as Jack put it, was not dealt with lightly. Not only did we see Will troubled by nightmares about what he’d done, but it was the reason Jack asked Will to get a psych eval – from none other than Hannibal Lecter.

The dynamic between Jack and Hannibal is great, as Hannibal established an easy, friendly, no BS tone with Will – “rubber stamping” him, officially, so they two could be more genuine together. At the same time, he’s baiting Will with dark questions like, “Is it hard imagining he thrill someone else feels killing, now that you’ve done it yourself?” Hannibal clearly finds Will someone worth his time – does he want to cultivate the darkness he sees within Will? By the end of the episode, he has Will admit “I liked killing him”, as they discuss the feeling of power that goes along with taking a life.

Woulda, Shoulda, Coulda In Washington And Elsewhere

By Ron-Reale

We should only get mail delivered on Mondays and Thursdays.

The Conservatives in the House should be drafting a bill concerning the number of taxpayer-funded vacations any future president gets (and a cap on costs over which the President is responsible.) Going to Camp David or their private home for extended times are fine, as they are considered “working vacations”. High priced hotels and lavish multiple, separate family vacations on the taxpayer dime must have some restrictions. Even the Royal Family in Britain has a set allowance. There is no reason our President’s (and other elected officials’ perks) should be unlimited or undefined.

No politician other than the president should receive any lifetime pension from the taxpayers above $100,000 a year.

A definition of the duties of the unelected first lady is due. A cap on their taxpayer-funded activities is long overdue. These women are not elected, and there is no oversight of their spending. Their husbands should be personally responsible for the cost of their hobbies, not the public. If first ladies wish to spend taxpayer monies, let them get elected to do so.

The American Psychiatric Association should be held accountable for the death and damage their illogical and dangerous decisions cause. Public school education has been sacrificed and destroyed by their PC “global self-esteem” BS.Very expensive experimental psychotropic drugs rewire the brain and create addicts who must keep taking the drug for the rest of their lives. Problems are not solved with a satisfied patient ending therapy. No, the drug companies and the venal frauds bilk the insurance companies for the overpriced medications you must take for the rest of your life.

With one exception, every mass shooting was perpetrated by someone on anti-depressants or some type of mood-altering psychotropic drugs.

American society as a whole has been severely damaged by the illogical assertion by the APA that homosexuality is a “normal” lifestyle, against all evidence to the contrary. Feeding into the fantasy world of these pitiable mentally ill people, we now stand at a point where this tiny minority (3.5%) is trying to convince the rest of the world, and forcibly indoctrinate our children (with the Progressive enemies of America in our Government helping them at every step) into accepting their delusional and dangerous lifestyle.

Churches and religious organizations should no longer recognize State marriage licenses. They should be free to marry anyone they choose, according to their beliefs; and it is none of the State’s business. It is the ultimate “Free Speech” and “Religious Freedom” issue and should be forced to the courts by the religious organizations. Regular business partnership agreements will cover the inheritance, visitation, and every other “right” now granted by the State recognition through the marriage contract. There should be no tax breaks for anyone based on whether or not they are married.

Our President’s (and, by extension, our) taxpayer-funded sponsorship of the terrorism of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt is a direct and active threat against the UAE immediately, and the free world eventually.

On a personal note, we all face different obstacles and experiences in life. The death of a parent or …read more

Republicans Need To Be Republicans Again

By Allan Erickson

Republican Elephant 2 SC Republicans need to be Republicans again

Weak, mealy-mouthed, spongy politicians make people sick.  We have respect for someone who sticks to his guns, even if we disagree with him. We despise people with whom we might agree when they start compromising, back-pedaling, and double-talking just to pander for votes, a disgusting display of craven selfishness.

Starting with Abraham Lincoln, Republicans used to stand tall and stand for the right, especially when the majority stood opposed.  Most people in America could have cared less about slavery way back when.  Others supported it.  It was a courageous minority that brought the matter to the table and pushed it to a head.  The Republican Party was founded to stop slavery, and it was Republicans who were largely responsible for the success of civil rights legislation passed in the 60s.

That’s what conservatives used to do as people most interested in the right, people willing to fight for the right.

General Dwight Eisenhower showed the right stuff when he warned of the dangers of the military industrial complex. Teddy Roosevelt took a stand against monopolies and for preservation of wilderness and resources.  Ronald Reagan held to traditional values, promoted Americanism, sought limited government according to the Constitution, helped expand liberty at home and abroad, and never blinked in the face of the evil empire.

Republicans used to keep faith with the Founders, with Revolutionary fervor. They once refused to compromise on core values, showing real integrity, engendering respect and trust, proving their leadership credentials, and encouraging loyalty and support.

Not so much today.  Compromising on principle, too many have fallen to the level of carpetbaggers and carnival barkers.

This one capitulates on same-sex marriage.  That one endorses murdering babies in the womb.  The other one calls the Constitution a living document subject to the whims of ‘interpretation,’ allowing for increased judicial activism and bureaucratic despotism, limited government be damned.  Still another talks blanket amnesty just to beg for votes on his knees.

And then party leadership falls on its sword issuing an ‘autopsy,’ urging Republicans to be more like Democrats if they want to win elections.

BS.

If Republicans want to win elections, they must differentiate even more from Democrats, truly taking on the special interests that choke our government.

If Republicans want to win elections, they must preach Americanism and mean it, passionately renewing faith with the Founders.

If Republicans want to win elections, they need to show young people they consistently care about morality, social issues, the family, national defense, and economic growth.

If Republicans want to win elections, they must articulate real solutions to poverty and discrimination instead of using them as wedge issues to demonize the opposition just like the opposition.

If Republicans want to win elections, they need to boldly prove that their policies enhance economic freedom, self-government, and limited government and that those policies are proven successful and therefore worthy of support.

If Republicans want to win elections, they need to stop being weak and cowardly, cut all the double talk, and fight for what’s right, ignoring polls and focus groups.

If Republicans want to win elections, they must fight like hell …read more

“Nero” Starring Barry Soetoro

By Allan Erickson

obamalaw Nero Starring Barry Soetoro

David Limbaugh has written persuasively that Barack Obama is a malignant narcissist. When we see the ‘president-in-name-only’ preening in the mirror, refusing to take any responsibility for anything, and constantly blaming everyone else for each and every failure, the diagnosis sticks. When the fawning media worship at his throne, the dictator receives homage, then denigrates the brownnosers. When one or two break ranks, he threatens them.

Dinesh D’Souza, in print and in his documentary, rightly characterizes Barry Soetoro (B.S.) as an operative, groomed by subversives, then assigned the mission to radically and fundamentally change America based on the assumptions America is and was an evil colonial power, an empire racist to the core, one worthy of punishment for crimes against the have-nots.

Frank Gaffney, David Horowitz and Robert Spencer (to name only a few) have documented the extensive ties between B.S. and Islamic radicals, communists at home and abroad, and other assorted anti-American radicals eager to see the end of our republic.

Last Sunday, on Fox, in an interview with Chris Wallace, former governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney finally took the gloves off and called it like it is, referring to B.S. as “Nero fiddling while America burns.”

The reference is apt. Nero, the perversion-oriented Roman emperor who murdered Christians, was consumed by his own image. B.S. the emperor is no friend of Christians anywhere. David Barton at Wallbuilders.com, the nation’s historian, has characterized B.S. the most biblically hostile president ever. B.S.’s open hostility toward Israel is another red flag. Nero was responsible for setting Rome on fire, then blaming Christians, all in an effort to destroy the followers of the Great Liberator. When the citizens of Rome learned the truth, that Nero was responsible for the fire, they had his head. Obama sets fires weekly, blaming this or that group, usually the Tea Party, Republicans, white people, or gun owners.

Few have ventured so far as to call Obama evil, but there can be no other conclusion given the evidence revealed these last five years.

He has always supported every form of abortion, even the slaughter of full term babies and those who survive abortion, all with public financing of course.

BS holds our Constitution and the separation of powers in complete disdain given his serial violations and his open contempt for the Supreme Court and Congress.

His tax and spend policies are obviously designed to crush our economy.

Cutting defense, insulting our military, unilateral nuclear disarmament, and coddling enemies reveal a traitor in the White House, an accusation fortified in view of serveral traitors appointed recently to Cabinet posts.

And the continuous promotion of unlawful immigration and immorality forever cement B.S. a loose cannon operating without regard for the rule of law or the laws of nature.

Shall we mention his aggressive efforts to destroy traditional marriage by subverting the Defense of Marriage Act and promoting perversion in the military? Shall we also mention his obvious efforts to attack and destroy religious liberty within the dictates of Obamacare, or the BS’rs outrageous assault on the God-given right …read more

Mythbuntu: How I got started developing for Mythbuntu (or how you can help too)

I wrote this blog post after having a conversation on IRC with someone (snippet below)

* sabhain wants to be laga in his next life and restore the diskless stuff to its awesomeness of 10.04

sabhain, then the first step, would be joining #ubuntu-mythtv-dev

tgm4883, lol then step 0 would be to have time and learn programming beyond F90

sabhain, possibly. I didn’t know python though before I started helping out

Back in late 2006, I was what I like to think the average “computer guy”. Whether they are purchasing a new computer or having computer issues friends and family all came to me with their questions. I knew a fair amount about the latest video cards, processors, RAM, and hard drives. I knew the best places to buy these things online, and I had built my previous two desktops. I had been exposed to Linux a few times previously, but hadn’t really used it as a long term solution. I had been hopping back and forth between Windows XP and Fedora Core (4 – 6). This all changed at the beginning 2007.

At the end of 2006, I was finally fed up with the reformat and reinstall everything loop that is the maintenance cycle of Windows (although I had customized my install disk, so it was pretty quick). I made the decision to try and use Linux as a full time solution. Now I don’t recall the reason I left Fedora (I have a vague recollection it was some issue I had with Yum), but I installed Ubuntu 6.10 in early 2007 on my Dell Inspiron 5100. I chose Ubuntu probably because of a Google search, but possibly also DistroWatch (previously, I had installed and tested Redhat 9, Mandrake, and SuSe). As I recall, it was also the first distro that didn’t make my fan run at full speed 100% of the time. As I could now run Ubuntu on my laptop and not have it sound like a jet engine (and the battery ran considerably longer too), I was free to see what else I could do with Linux.

I had an old TV Tuner card laying around, so I looked into what software was available to make a DVR. This led me to MythTV and the #ubuntu-mythtv channel on IRC. This was around April 2007 and pre-Mythbuntu. As this was pre-Mythbuntu, MythTV was still a pain to setup. On top of that I was recording from a cable box, so I was recording over firewire (since my tuner was a crappy software encoder). I received a lot of help from someone who went by the handle majoridiot. As most of this was knowledge people had from installing it, I decided I was going to help out where I could. At this point, I didn’t know any programming languages. I was a senior in college getting a BS in Information Systems, but we were required to take 2 Java programming classes, and the only thing I remembered was that I could define how to draw a circle and then just call drawCircle() whenever I needed it (oop ftw).

I started helping with documentation as it seemed the easy thing to do. Since Mythbuntu was just starting up there was much stuff to do, so I helped where I could. If the website needed updating I helped update it. Something needed tested, I installed it in a VM and tested it. Website needed completely rebuilt from Google cache because the host that Mythbuntu used went down and our contact would completely ignore every attempt we had to contact them (yes that actually happened in the early days. No I will not name who it was), lets get to rebuilding it. Eventually it came that there were things missing that would need to be developed. As most of the other developers knew Python, it seemed like a good thing to learn. So I started learning Python and making my first program. Where did I learn how to program in Python? From http://docs.python.org/ and superm1, the lead Mythbuntu developer.

So now I’m one of the main Mythbuntu developers and have been for some time. I’ve gotten both of my post-college jobs, been sponsored to go to UDS (2x), and am now working on the MythTV integration for Ubuntu TV, all because of my involvement with Mythbuntu. I point this out not as a “look at how awesome I am” but a “look what you can do just by investing your time in something you like”.

If you want to help out in a project you love (whether it is Mythbuntu, MythTV, or anything else), we really do mean it when we say “No programming experience necessary”. There are many different areas to help in, so come and talk to us and we can find a good fit for you. Everyone has to start somewhere, and the time spent can help you in other areas of your life/career.

TL:DR – You don’t need programming experience if you want to help create something awesome. You can help in non-programming ways or learn it on the way. Come talk to us in #ubuntu-mythtv-dev and we’ll help find you something to do.

I’d also like to thank superm1, daviey, rhpot1991, mrandr, majoridiot, foxbuntu, davemorris, and anyone else that has helped me along the way. I wouldn’t be where I am now without the help from these people.
