AGY Holding Corp. Reports 2012 Fourth Quarter and Full Year Consolidated Results

AIKEN, S.C.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– AGY Holding Corp. (“AGY” or the “Company”) today announced consolidated results for the three and twelve months ended December 31, 2012.

“During 2012, we continued to successfully move our sales mix towards a higher concentration of Advanced Materials, despite a challenging undercurrent in the market,” said Richard Jenkins, the Company’s interim Chief Executive Officer. “Our specific product and project business continued to exhibit strength, and we outperformed our S-2 sales goals for fiscal year 2012. We also continued to build on the improvements in operating performance by increasing production efficiencies, implementing enhanced manufacturing processes, and controlling costs, while focusing on delivering high quality products. As a result, our Adjusted EBITDA attributable to AGY Holding Corp. increased $3.8 million to $21.6 million for the full year 2012, or a 21% improvement compared to 2011.”

Team develops a nanohybrid with remarkable properties using a new laser-plasma process

By achieving the synthesis of a novel nanohybrid structure by means of the pulsed laser ablation (PLA) technique, Professor My Ali El Khakani and his team paved the way for a new generation of optoelectronic materials. The combination of carbon nanotubes and lead sulfide (PbS) nanoparticles was performed using an effective and relatively simple process that offers considerable latitude for creating other nanohybrids for a variety of applications. The INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre researcher’s work, published in the renowned journal Advanced Materials, presents very promising prospects for the development of third-generation solar devices, fast photodetectors, and optoelectronic switches.

Cotton with special coating collects water from fogs in desert

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) researchers together with researchers at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), have developed a special treatment for cotton fabric that allows the cotton to absorb exceptional amounts of water from misty air: 340% of its own weight. What makes this ‘coated cotton’ so interesting is that the cotton releases the collected water by itself, as it gets warmer. This property makes of the coated cotton materials a potential solution to provide water to the desert regions, for example for agricultural purposes. The results of this research will be published next month in the scientific journal Advanced Materials.
