IMRSV‘s Cara™ Software Platform Captures Audience Information of Convention Visitors to ad:tech San Francisco at Moscone Center and Tweets Out Information

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)– IMRSV (formerly Immersive Labs) a TechStars NY company, and IPG Media Lab, part of IPG Mediabrands, the global media holding company of the Interpublic Group, today announced that the two companies have collaborated with ad:tech, the largest digital marketing event in the world, to install IMRSV‘s Cara™ software platform at ad:tech San Francisco, April 9-10, at Moscone Center West. Cara software platform, which enables any web camera to become an intelligent sensor, is a new way to measure the world. The ad:tech installation will provide anonymous, real-time audience data taken from five locations on the ad:tech show floor, including age, gender and attention time. IMRSV has designed the Cara platform as a way to measure retail, advertising and other real-world environments.

IMRSV and IPG Media Lab have collaborated on ways to adapt the Cara software platform to social media and ad networks. IPG is also an initial customer for the Cara platform.

“The ad industry has clamored for better measurement solutions that gather actual human data, not just machine information, for years, and the Cara platform is a true milestone for gathering intelligent information in a real-world setting,” said Nicole Buraglio, marketing director for ad:tech. “We always strive to introduce new, innovative technology at our events, and the IPGIMRSV demo is live, commercial technology that benefits our organization, as well as our members, in powerful ways.”

The Cara system will capture data, then tweet hourly breakdowns (to #adtechSF) of total data from all five locations in Moscone Center West, as well as data from each of the five locations. One of the locations is Booth# 2622 on the show floor, which will be hosted by IPG Media Lab and IMRSV.

IMRSV‘s innovation in the development of Cara is software that can detect up to 25 people simultaneously up to 25 feet away using a basic web camera. The technology behind this is a proprietary face detection software that adheres to privacy by design principles and doesn’t record images or collect any personal information. IPG Photonics Buys Mobius Photonics

Oxford, Mass.-based IPG Photonics bought itself a rival photonics company on the other side of the country today. Mountain View, Calif.-based Mobius Photonics makes high-power pulsed UV fiber lasers used in micromachining silicon wafers, via drilling to create a connection between two layers of a semiconductor, and processing solar hybrid panels.

IPG says it’s buying the company in part “to accelerate its entry into the UV laser market,” which IPG thinks “could be a significant sales driver for IPG in the coming years.” IPG believes that in conjunction with its own technology, it will be able to advance the market for low-cost UV fiber lasers.

That being said, the deal won’t have any immediate beneficial effect on IPG‘s finances. While the purchase price it’s paying wasn’t disclosed in today’s announcement, Mobius’ revenues in 2012 were a mere $1.4 million — about 0.2% of IPG‘s sales that year.

Shares of IPG gained 0.7% in Tuesday trading, closing at $62.68 ahead of the announcement.

IPG Photonics Acquires Mobius Photonics to Accelerate UV Laser Development

Acquisition Broadens Opportunities in Fine Processing Markets

OXFORD, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– IPG Photonics Corporation (NAS: IPGP) today announced the acquisition of privately held Mountain View, California-based Mobius Photonics to accelerate its entry into the UV laser market and deepen IPG’s development team. Mobius provides high-power pulsed UV fiber lasers for micromachining, such as dicing and scribing of wafers, and VIA drilling and solar hybrid panel processing.

“The acquisition of Mobius Photonics will augment our current development efforts in UV fiber lasers to quickly penetrate the UV laser market, which we believe could be a significant sales driver for IPG in the coming years. Mobius has deep expertise in UV lasers, a strong patent portfolio and proprietary techniques relating to UV lasers,” said Dr. Valentin Gapontsev, IPG Photonics’ Chief Executive Officer. “The market has been waiting for a cost-effective, reliable and stable UV fiber laser. In the acquisition, IPG acquired an exclusive license of U.S. Patent No. 5,745,284, an early and broad patent claiming pulsed fiber lasers with frequency conversion into UV light, as well as other Mobius patents, licenses and trade secrets.

The employees from Mobius will become part of the IPG Silicon Valley Technology Center. Mobius had revenue from operations of approximately $1.4 million for 2012.

Invisible Phone Guard protects your gear from rogue hammers and knives

LAS VEGAS—How many times has this happened to you? You’re focusing on the perfect phrasing for your tweet, when some random jerk comes running by and smashes your phone with a claw hammer?

Well, probably never, but a new material called Invisible Phone Guard (IPG) can protect your mobile device against all kinds of physical threats, errant hammer strikes if necessary.

IPG is made from a clear film supposedly developed for the U.S. Air Force and NASA to protect aircraft lights and canopies. It’s extremely tough and scratch-resistant (the company (also called Invisible Phone Guard) calls it “self-healing,” an oft-overused marketing phrase). Cover your iPhone’s front and back with it and you’ll add a serious layer of scratch and crack protection.

It seems to work as advertised when I tried it at the company’s booth. I took a hammer to an iPhone 4 and a Kindle Fire coated with IPG, and then I chopped some celery on top of it. (See image above.) There were no visible cracks or scratches left to tell the tale.
