Jackson Doak: The Ubuntu PC Case Mod Pt.7 SPONSORSHIP!

P1010491

This has been a good week for the build. I’ve got the DVD drives wrapped, more paracord has arrived (enough to do the top), the side windows are ready to cut and I finally got sponsored, thanks to IceModz.com .

I’ve also got around to planning the mount and door for the ITX board and Mac Mini. They will be mounted sideways, possibly with a mount in the middle, possibly with just zip ties. This will be connected to the bottom 4 5.25″ drive mounts and a front USB panel. I’ll try to add a door too, but i might not be able to.

I apologise for the pics this week, it’s raining so i cannot get proper lighting.

The Stencil for the windows. The inside cutout will be used with purple mirror acrylic on one side, The whole size of the paper will be the UV orange window on the other side.

The paracord. It’s more violet and orange in real life.

The DVD drives, with lots of Carbon Fibre wrap

And now, some pics of the UV/Purple LEDs off IceModz.com Since mine haven’t arrived yet, as you can see, UV reactive things really glow.

Jackson Doak: The Ubuntu PC Case Mod Pt.6 The mac mini

P1010477

Since the last update my 550 paracord (both orange and purple) and vinyl wrap has been put to use, mostly on the mac mini, i still have plenty of both left though. Unfortunately, i broke my psu after i got the +4 pin done so sleeving will have to wait until i’m less poor. As a result, i made some other stuff with the paracord.

The mac mini is being a pain though. When i went to test the latest PPC netboot image (and test the mac worked) it made the chime noise and the cd spun up, but nothing appeared on my screen. As a result, the cd is now trapped. I’m assuming the issue is that the monitor is 1080p and was connected by  DVI-D (digital)

I’m also looking into putting a tablet in the top, possibly mounted with paracord, rather than a second window. Then i will truly fit balloons’s series of “testing all the things”. The other window will be cut as soon as my dad get’s time to print an A3 sized stencil of the ubuntu logo. Now sit back and enjoy the pics.

The mac mini cover, separated…

… and joined

As you can see, the vinyl wrap isn’t easy to use. But that will be covered by the ITX board. (The holes are for mounting the board)

The internals of the mac mini

The DVD drives are stealthy again.

P1010488

The rest will be wrapped soon

P1010489

The belt i made. It works really well.

Questions for the comments section:
1. Should it be a Tablet or a window on the top?
2. Should i make a “door” for the mac mini and itx board. (They will be mounted in the 5.25″ bays vertically)
3. Should the motherboard be painted orange or purple (what seems to be the “new” ubuntu colour)
4. (If i get a tablet) How should the tablet bee mounted?
5. What other suggestions do you have?

Marcin Juszkiewicz: Linaro Connect Asia 2013 was fun

ATM keypad in Hong Kong

Second day in a row I managed to get 8 hours of sleep like I was not able at Linaro Connect Asia 2013. There was no time for sleeping as so many things had happened.

This time I decided to go to Hong Kong on Friday to have whole Sunday for shopping or sight seeing etc. Also to make things different I went though Helsinki (was Istanbul in 2012). It was interesting experience to hear English language with Finnish accent. There were moments when during in-flight announcements I was not able to recognize when they ended Finnish part and started English one ;D

HEL was cold but only outside so once I got to terminal it was fine. Rushed though, passed biometric passport gate and got a seat with electricity to charge my Chromebook and phone. Flight was “fine” as usual but as it was during night I tried to catch some sleep.

Finnair’s crew had some problems getting in-flight entertainment system working so we could watch how Linux booted on those NSC Geode GX2 based devices. Due to copyright note in bootloader (redboot) I assumed that it is not older than 9 years. Very slow boot anyway with lot of text printed. They should show some splash + potential progress bar instead. But finally it started working. Provided in-ear headphones are much better than ones on Lufthansa flights.

Landed, got prepaid sim from “3″ network, met Andrea Gallo and we went to hotel. I had plans to go to the city center but was too tired for it. I also lacked HKD due to other layout of keypad in ATM 😀

On Sunday we grouped and went to Shim Shui Po to do some electronics related shopping. Prices in Hong Kong are similar/worse than in Europe so I bought only few things which I had problems finding in low price at home: mini-ITX case (16€), Nexus 4 back cover (6.5€), case for Samsung Chromebook (7.5€) and some cables. There are still no USB 3.0 cables in wide selection ;( I also bought crappy dual sim phone for 10€ as I needed one to get my Polish sim on network.

I also did some shopping on Tuesday — this time on Ladies’ Market. It is one long street with lot of sellers with clothes, wallets, toys, phone covers, headphones and other gift like things of unknown quality. I left there all money I had but got gifts for everyone I wanted. Haggling there is a must as 40% of starting price is easy to get. And you do not even need to tell anything to get price lowered…

We also went to Shenzen, China for one afternoon but that’s story for separate post.

But I went there for connecting with people. And to discuss/present our work done in last cycle and to be done in next ones.

Each day started with keynote (Friday one had Linaro awards). And we got speakers from outside of Linaro:

  • Jon Corbet (LWN)
  • Lars Kurth (Citrix)
  • Jason Taylor (Facebook)
  • Greg Kroah-Hartman

Each talk was interesting. Jon shown Linaro …read more

Gigabyte wants you to build your own all-in-one

LAS VEGAS—DIY is not dead.

Gigabyte wants to transmit that message clearly. The Taiwan-based motherboard manufacturer ships millions of motherboards into retail, which are used by enthusiasts to build their own hotrod performance PCs. Trends in the industry, like the all-in-one PC, seemingly make big tower PCs obsolete. Even the boutique suppliers of PC gear are moving into smaller systems, one key example being Falcon Northwest’s Tiki micro-tower.

Now Gigabyte and Intel are teaming up to let you build your own all-in-one PC. Intel is developing a standard for modular all-in-one components. The standards include specifications for very low profile, mini-ITX motherboards called Thin Mini-ITX. Gigabyte is offering two motherboard products based on the standard, including one using the feature-rich Intel H77 chipset.

Gigabyte’s Thin Mini-ITX board supports SODIMM memory and can handle CPUs rated up to 65 watts.

Intel is pretty serious about this push, including offering tutorials and support documentation to get you started. In order to minimize confusion, Thin Mini-ITX motherboards based on the new standard will include an Intel AIO logo on the box.
