JGL Talks Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

While promoting his directorial debut Don Jon’s Addiction at SXSW this weekend in Austin, TX, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was asked about his experience working on Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s upcoming Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

In the comic book sequel, JGL plays Jonny, a brand new character in the Sin City universe, who will appear in the segment titled “The Long Bad Night” — which isn’t based on any of Miller’s previous comics.

“It’s interesting. They wanted to have a movie where fans of the books would still be able to look forward to something new and unexpected, so they added a story,” Gordon-Levitt told Coming Soon. “I remember being really intrigued by that and I was really looking forward to, ‘Oh that will be so interesting to have the actual comics to refer to as an actor’ but no I didn’t.”

Like many film festivals, SXSW has a huge number of films that are being screened that are looking for a wider audience. SXSW Interactive – The 7 Ways to Make the Most of It

By Kevin Ready, Contributor

Austin Texas is overrun by technology and digital media folks this week during the SXSW Interactive festival. The event itself runs from Friday through the weekend and finishes up on Tuesday night, and consists of hundreds of lectures, panels, information sessions, and technology demonstrations. It all comes off as being a pretty big deal – on Saturday afternoon alone there were over 100 sessions, including Elon Musk discussing the details of his resupply rocket mission the International Space Station, and Al Gore discussing his book. With all of the opportunities to learn and meet people, there can be challenges in making the most of it – or  even physically making it through. It is not unusual to go for 14 hours straight with no breaks at SXSW. Here are some survival tips gleaned from 3 years of attending the event: Leave your friends and colleagues behind: Even if you came to this event with your coworkers or friends, say goodbye to them each morning and head a separate way. SXSW is about meeting new people. Diversify: Make it a point to attend sessions about subjects that you know nothing about. SXSW provides the rare and valuable  opportunity to share time with experts from many diverse fields. Indeed, one of the recurring bits of advice we get from experienced entrepreneurs and venture capitalists like investor Vinod Khosla (who shared this advice on Saturday afternoon) is that “diversity matters”. The most successful businesses and executives deliberately surround themselves with people who have different personalities, different areas of expertise, and different backgrounds. SXSW brings you that opportunity to a degree that is hard to match. Conserve your phone battery: SXSW has most attendees tweeting, texting, calling, emailing, and taking notes on their phones all day long. Somewhere around hour 7 they all notice that they are running out of power. In the early morning, turn down your screen brightness and turn off unnecessary services like Bluetooth and GPS if you can. Also take advantage of charging opportunities throughout the day. Bring food: Throw some granola bars in your bag before you head out each day. Sessions get long, and continue one-after-another. Eric Ries of the Lean Startup commented yesterday that he “didn’t know what he was thinking” leaving the hotel without breakfast, and without carrying anything to snack on for the day. Most sessions have water available, so you don’t need to carry around a water bottle all day. Take Notes: Bring a pen and a paper notebook. Capture the best ideas you get during the day, including names and contact info for people you meet. After you get back home or to your hotel at night, go through your notes and notate them from what you remember of the sessions. Be sure to send a quick email to any folks that you met and want to keep in touch with. If you wait until after the whole event is over, your memory of who you met and what you learned will be hard to …read more

The Introvert's Guide to a Successful SXSW

By Dorie Clark, Contributor

The South by Southwest Interactive festival is a frenzied cornucopia – nearly 30,000 people descending on a few square blocks of Austin, launching innovations and overtaxing everything from wifi signals to restaurant seating. It’s a dream for eager extroverts looking to make new connections and enjoy the legendary SXSW party scene, fully loaded with Texas BBQ and beer. But it can be a challenge for introverts who know (in theory) that they should be out mingling, but feel overwhelmed by the crowds, the strangers, and the incredibly loud music everywhere. …read more

SXSW: Analyst Says PS4 and Next Xbox Games Will Cost $70

PS4 and next Xbox games will retail at $70, ten dollars more than current gen games, said Wedbush Securities Research Analyst Michael Pachter during a panel at SXSW.

The news was tweeted this afternoon by Spike and GamesTrailers Host Geoff Keighley.

Geoff Keighley (@geoffkeighley) March 9, 2013

This comes after Sony clarified the price point of PS4 games when SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton explained that Sony, “will offer games with prices ranging from $0.99 to the more traditional $60 range with the ability for players to sample games before they buy.” It’s important to note that Tretton’s quote never gives a hard number, like a MSRP of $59.99, etc., which leaves room for interpretation of what Sony’s view of a “traditional $60 range” might actually be.

SXSW embraces the complexity of the web

By Steven Rosenbaum, Contributor Day 1 SXSW – Bre Pettis began the day with the opening keynote. The thing about Bre is you know he has a real vision of how he can change the world – and he’s just getting started.  It’s easy to think of MakerBot as a 3d printer -and while it is that – it is so much more.  For Pettis,  who provided the opening keynote to this years SXSW conf in Austin – the shift is more fundamental than that. It’s about changing our society from a group of ‘consumers’  to a new world in which we are all makers.  Creators.  Contributors to the creative collective good.  So when he says 3d printing is about more than just making a plastic shot glass or a lego brick – he means it.  He shared with the standing room only crowd his latest piece of the ‘maker’ puzzle,  a device called the MakerBot Digitizer.  A pair of lasers,  a camera,  and a rotating platform.  Now creating 3d designs doesn’t require an art or engineering background.  Just take the thing you want to replicated,  and put it on the Digitizer.  Minutes later, you have a 3d design that can be printed, and re-printed,  forever. …read more

New Borderlands 2 DLC Includes New Vault Hunter

During a panel at SXSW today, Gearbox revealed that a new Vault Hunter is coming to Borderlands 2. In a teaser shown at the panel, Gearbox teased that “deep beneath Pandora, an experiment has escaped. Bandits beware, a new Vault Hunter is coming. More mayhem awaits.”

For now, additional details (including a release date) haven’t been revealed, though Gearbox franchise director Matt Armstrong added that the content will be part of the Borderlands 2 Season Pass and said that “DLC is announced on a very tight schedule, and I don’t think you’ll have to wait long until you see that character.”

Back in December, Gearbox told IGN that it will continue to support Borderlands 2 with downloadable content, and could even offer an additional content season after the current one concludes. Previously, Gearbox PR and marketing manager Adam Fletcher hinted at “possibilities of incorporating additional characters.”

Digimarc to Demonstrate the Future of Immersive Marketing at SXSW

Using Digital Watermarks, Brands Engage Shoppers with Custom Content and Offers via Print, Radio, TV, In-store and More

BEAVERTON, Ore.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Digimarc Corporation (NAS: DMRC) today began demonstrating how top publications, retailers, shows and brands will reach mobile-enabled customers via digital watermarks in radio, TV and in-store at SXSW 2013 March 8-12. The demo, by appointment only, shows how embedded digital watermarking across print, audio, video and other outlets will engage, immerse and connect consumers with the world around them.

Transparent digital watermarking technology is used in countless print publications and catalogs to connect shoppers with premium content, e-commerce offers, contests and more via a quick scan of text or images with their smartphone. Digital watermarks placed in magazine editorial and advertising content grew 486 percent from 2011 to 2012, reaching more than 37 million readers in total.

Quickly moving beyond print, digital watermarking promises to bring an immersive mobile marketing framework to brands for increased sales impact. The company’s demo at SXSW booth #443/445 will showcase how businesses will connect with target customers as they browse print, listen to the radio, watch TV, walk store aisles and more. Brands will get a glimpse at geo targeting, integrated payoffs, invisible brand triggers, comparative marketing analytics and more.

“The technology behind the Digimarc Discover platform is being rapidly expanded to encompass all the places publishers, advertisers and brands want to connect with customers throughout their shopping journey,” said Ed Knudson, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing at Digimarc. “At SXSW, we will give these businesses a look at what’s to come in digital watermarking, such as how to expand to radio, TV and in-store. We’ll discuss essential campaign factors such as the best times to engage customers, most popular payoffs and how to maintain brand integrity and campaign cohesion at every touch point.”

SXSW Conferences and Festivals (March 8-17, 2013) offer the unique convergence of original music, independent films, and emerging technologies. Fostering creative and professional growth alike, SXSW is the premier destination for discovery.
