10 Syrian seamen missing after cargo ships collide off southern Greece

A cargo ship sank off southern Greece after colliding with another freighter Monday, leaving two Syrian seamen dead and eight others missing and spurring a large rescue operation, officials said.

The accident occurred before 7 a.m. some 78 miles southwest of the southern Peloponnese peninsula, a Merchant Marine Ministry statement said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the collision between the Antigua-flagged Consouth and the Cook Islands-flagged Piri Reis in the Mediterranean Sea.

Weather conditions were good at the time, which facilitated rescue efforts involving coast guard vessels, merchant ships, a rescue helicopter and an airforce C-130 transport plane.

The Piri Reis, which was carrying a cargo of fertilizer to a Ukrainian port, sank, and seven of its crew of 17 Syrian seamen were rescued. Two bodies were pulled out of the sea a few hours after the collision.

The Consouth, sailing without freight from Turkey to Malta, had 16 Russian, Filippino and Polish seamen on board, all who were unhurt, the ministry said.

Putin orders surprise exercise in Black Sea

The Kremlin says Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a surprise military exercise in the Black Sea.

News agencies quoted his spokesman Dmitry Peskov as saying Putin dispatched the order to the defense minister at 4 a.m. on Thursday.

A Kremlin statement says the exercise will involve 36 vessels, an unspecified number of airplanes and up to 7,000 troops. Peskov says maneuvers involving fewer than 7,000 troops do not require approval from Russia‘s neighbors.

Peskov said ships taking part in the exercise have already left the Russia-leased Sevastopol port in Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula.

Russia‘s naval affairs are under scrutiny due to the civil war in ally Syria. Russia risks losing access to its naval base in Syria‘s Tartus port on the Mediterranean Sea if the Syrian regime is toppled.

Spanish authorities say more than 150 sub-Saharan migrants charged a barbed-wire border fence and tried to enter the Spanish enclave of Melilla from Morocco. A dozen injuries were reported.

About 50 migrants made it over the six-meter (20-foot) fence at 6 a.m. (0500 GMT; 1 a.m. EDT) Monday although police managed to force most back. Police searched Melilla for those who got through.

A Melilla Interior Ministry statement says 10 migrants and two police officers were treated for minor injuries. Melilla is one of two Spanish enclaves on the northwest African coast that are surrounded by Morocco on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other.

Migrants seeking access to Europe camp around Melilla hoping for a chance to cross the fence.

Italian court: Missile caused 1980 plane crash

Italy‘s top criminal court has ruled there is “abundantly” clear evidence that a stray missile caused an Italian passenger jet to crash into the Mediterranean Sea in 1980, killing all 81 people aboard.

Quoting from the Rome ruling on Monday, the Italian news agency LaPresse said the court upheld a Palermo appeals ruling that Italian radar systems didn’t adequately protect the skies and Italy must compensate the victims’ families.

What caused the Itavia DC-9 to crash during a flight from Bologna to Palermo has been one of Italy‘s enduring mysteries.

Some theorized a bomb exploded. Others contended the jet was caught in the crossfire of a military aerial dogfight, with a Libyan plane possibly the target. French, U.S. and NATO officials have denied military activity in the skies that night.
