Reports: Edward Snowden seeks asylum in Russia

Edward Snowden, the leaker of documents that revealed National Security Agency surveillance programs, has submitted a request for temporary asylum in Russia and could be granted a decision within several weeks, according to news reports.

Snowden’s request was submitted Tuesday in an effort to evade persecution from the U.S. government that could bring with it torture or death, said Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden’s attorney, according to reports in the Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press. Russia’s Federal Migration Service is required by law to consider the application within three months, but a decision in Snowden’s case could be made in as soon as two to three weeks, the Journal said.

The request is being made for “temporary asylum,” not permanent political asylum, because the latter takes longer to consider, the AP said. Under Russian law, political asylum is granted by presidential decree and is not granted often, whereas temporary asylum is akin to refugee status and usually lasts for a renewable period of one year, reports said.

WikiLeaks, the nonprofit news-spilling organization that has been advising Snowden, could not be immediately reached to confirm the reports. Officials at the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C., as well as the Consulate General of Russia in San Francisco, also could not be reached.

Protesters accuse Putin of murdering Polish leader

About 200 Poles chanted accusations against Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, accusing the Russian leader of murdering their own President Lech Kaczynski in a 2010 plane crash in Russia.

The rally in front of the Russian Embassy in Warsaw came on the eve of the third anniversary of the plane crash in Smolensk, Russia, that killed Kaczynski and a swath of the Polish military and political elite — a total of 96 people.

A Polish investigation has put most of the blame for the catastrophe on the Polish pilots who tried to land the plane in heavy fog despite warnings not to by Russia air traffic controllers. But some Poles are convinced that Russia planted an explosive device in the plane to bring it down and silence Kaczynski, a strong opponent of Moscow.

Protesters chanted “Putin, murderer!” and “Punishment for murderers!” as they faced a barricaded embassy, a grand structure with neo-classical columns in the city’s government quarter. All of the embassy’s windows were dark and the only other sign of life were Polish police officers in riot gear who faced the protesters with blank looks.

The protest was organized by a right-wing newspaper, Gazeta Polska.

The belief in Russian guilt despite the Polish state investigation that found no sign of foul play underlines a deep distrust toward Moscow that persists in Poland even 23 years after this former Soviet satellite nation threw off Moscow-backed communist rule. Poles also remember a harsh occupation by Russia over a part of Poland during the 19th century.

Protesters said they see Russia today as an authoritarian state that uses murder to keep its opponents in line. They also argued that Putin had reason to despise Kaczynski, who had strongly criticized Russia during its war with Georgia in 2008.

“They murdered our president, they murdered the Polish elite,” said Jerzy Szarwark, a 56-year-old selling pins, including one that showed a picture of the plane’s wreckage and the words “Putin knows — but we don’t.”

Beata Slawinska, a 46-year-old who works in advertising, said people in the West can’t understand Russian motivations the way Poles can.

“They have no experience with Russian occupation,” Slawinska said.

Another protester, Joanna Kazmarek, 46, expressed anger that …read more

Japan says 2 Russian fighters briefly entered its airspace

Japan‘s Defense Ministry said two Russian fighter jets briefly intruded into Japanese airspace Thursday off the northwestern tip of the island of Hokkaido, prompting Tokyo to lodge a protest.

Japanese air force jets scrambled after the intrusion by the two SU-27 jets off the coast of Rishiri island, which lasted less than a minute, ministry official Yoshihide Yoshida said.

Yoshida said it was not immediately known whether the airspace violation was intentional or accidental, but that it was “extremely problematic.” The last intrusion by Russian jets in Japanese airspace was on Feb. 9, 2008, he said.

Japan‘s Foreign Ministry lodged a protest with the Russian Embassy in Tokyo.

Another ministry official who spoke on condition of anonymity said it was not immediately clear whether it was related to a government-sponsored rally held Thursday demanding that Moscow return a group of disputed islands off Hokkaido’s eastern coast.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told the rally that he will do his utmost to resolve the dispute with Russia, which has kept the two nations from signing a peace treaty officially ending their hostilities in World War II.

2 Russians, Italian abducted in Syria set free

Russia says two Russians and an Italian kidnapped by Syrian rebels have been freed in exchange for captured militants.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Monday that Viktor Gorelov and Abdessattar Hassun are in the Russian Embassy in Damascus and were in good health. It added that Italian Mario Belluomo, abducted together with them on Dec. 12, will be handed over to Italian envoys by Syria‘s Foreign Ministry.

The Russian Embassy wouldn’t say how many captured militants were set free in exchange for the three hostages, or offer any details about their release, which was also reported by state-run Syrian TV.

Russia has been the main ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, shielding him from U.N. sanctions over a civil war that the U.N. says has killed 60,000 people.
