Annual Energy Storage for Ancillary Services Capacity Installations Will Increase Ten-Fold by 2023, Forecasts Pike Research

BOULDER, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Designed to respond to the technical challenges of generating, transmitting, and distributing electricity, ancillary services are required to balance the grid regardless of the structure of the electricity market. Energy storage is poised to take advantage of several global trends in the ancillary services market. According to a new report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, annual worldwide installations of energy storage for ancillary services will increase more than ten-fold over the next ten years, growing from less than 330 megawatts (MW) in 2013 to more than 3,500 MW in 2023.

“The value of ancillary services to utilities and grid operators is becoming more explicit,” says senior research analyst Anissa Dehamna. “This will allow energy storage system (ESS) providers to present clear business cases for ESSs for ancillary services in the coming decade, and while this market will still be relatively small by 2023, the opportunities for providers are significant.”

In regulated markets, the customers for both ancillary services and energy storage providing ancillary services are vertically integrated utilities. By contrast, the customers for ancillary services in deregulated markets are grid operators. However, the grid operators do not own assets that provide ancillary services – they procure these services from other parties. Therefore, according to the report, the customers for energy storage systems in this case could be generators, third-party service providers, or resource aggregators (such as demand response aggregators).

Transaction highlights:

  • Dynegy to acquire 4,119 MW of generation and AER‘s marketing and Homefield Energy retail businesses through Illinois Power Holdings, a newly formed, non-recourse subsidiary (with the exception of a $25 million limited guarantee)

HOUSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Dynegy Inc. (NYS: DYN) and Ameren (NYS: AEE) announced today they have signed a definitive agreement under which Dynegy’s subsidiary Illinois Power Holdings, LLC (IPH) will acquire Ameren’s subsidiary, Ameren Energy Resources (AER) and its subsidiaries Ameren Energy Generating Company (Genco), AmerenEnergy Resources Generating Company (AERG), and Ameren Energy Marketing Company (AEM). Upon closing, Dynegy will own more than 8,000 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity in Illinois, and nearly 14,000 MW nationally. The AER retail and marketing businesses and the following plants are included in the transaction: Duck Creek, Coffeen, E.D. Edwards, Newton, and Joppa.

Solar Power Growing but Still Too Small

The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) released its annual report for 2012. The data show that the U.S. solar market grew 76% last year. Even with that level of expansion, the energy source is extremely tiny by the standards of most others. And growth of other energy sources like shale and natural gas could quickly stunt solar’s future.

In the report the association’s executives report:

2012 was a historic and busy year for the U.S. solar market. Photovoltaic (PV) installations grew 76% over 2011, to total 3,313 megawatts (MW) in 2012, with an estimated market value of $11.5 billion. Each market segment (residential, non-residential, and utility) showed growth over 2011, while the overall markets in most U.S. states expanded as well. Installed prices for PV systems fell 27% during 2012 and at least 13% in each market segment. Nearly 83,000 homes installed solar PV, and cumulative PV installations in the U.S. surpassed 300,000.

The U.S. has more than 100 million homes and housing units. The solar PV installations are hardly a measurable fraction of that.

The reports also states:

Even with the cost of solar falling for consumers, the market size of the U.S. solar industry grew 34 percent from $8.6 billion in 2011 to $11.5 billion in 2012 – not counting billions of dollars in other economic benefits across states and communities.  As of the end of 2012, there were 7,221 MW of PV and 546 MW of concentrating solar power (CSP) online in the U.S. – enough to power 1.2 million homes.

But solar is not in 1.2 million homes. And $11.5 billion is about a quarter of the profits – not revenue, but profits – of Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) last year.

Solar continues to face significant hurdles. Among them are inertia. Many homes and businesses do not want to bother changing energy sources, even with the loose promise of savings in doing so. Energy sources from gas to heating oil also promise savings if only the installed base would upgrade to the latest technology. Solar’s message gets lost in the noise about other energy sources

The image of solar also has to battle the tons of news reports about the future of shale oil and gas, and what these will do to U.S. energy needs. Some experts believe that America will be energy independent within two decades. An implied side effect of that is that the prices for traditional fossil fuel energy will plunge.

The footprint solar energy has in the U.S. may continue to increase, but that is because of the law of small numbers. Tiny dollar amounts can grow by high percentages. That does not mean the total market even scratches the surface of America’s energy needs.

U.S. equity markets opened slightly lower this morning following on some poor data on eurozone industrial production, which fell more than expected. Non-farm payrolls fell more than expected in France and the country’s CPI rose less than analysts had forecast. There was no data out of Asia this morning, but there are worries that China will tighten lending requirements for home purchases as the country tries to cool off the real estate market. In the U.S., retail sales came in better than expected (more coverage here), but new applications for mortgages fell as interest rates rose (more coverage here). The Business Roundtable released its economic outlook for spring, which suggests that sales and capital spending will rise, but hiring will remain slow (more coverage here).

The U.S. dollar index rose 0.34% today, now at 82.865. The GSCI commodity index is up 0.1% at 649.62, with commodities prices mostly lower today. WTI crude oil closed down fractionally today, at $92.52 a barrel, following the release of the EIA’s inventory report (more coverage here). Brent crude trades down 1.2% at $108.40 a barrel. Natural gas is up 1% today at about $3.68 per million BTUs. Gold settled down 0.2% today at $1,588.40 an ounce, largely due to the stronger dollar.

The unofficial closing bells put the DJIA up more than 5 points to 14,455.28 (0.04%), the NASDAQ rose nearly 3 points (0.09%) to 3,245.12, and the S&P 500 rose 0.13% or about 2 points to 1,554.52.

There were a several analyst upgrades and downgrades today, including Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) reiterated as ‘buy’ with a price target of $100 at BofA/Merrill Lynch; Oracle Corp. (NASDAQ: ORCL) raised to ‘buy’ at Canaccord Genuity; Walgreen Co. (NYSE: WAG) raised to ‘buy’ at UBS; Yum! Brands Inc. (NYSE: YUM) maintained as ‘outperform’ and price target raised to $70 at Credit Suisse; and El Paso Pipeline Partners LP (NYSE: EPB) cut to ‘neutral’ and price target raised to $44 at Credit Suisse (more coverage of MLP ratings here).

Earnings reports since markets closed last night resulted in several price moves today, including these: Dole Food Company Inc. (NYSE: DOLE) is down 8.8% at $10.70; Majesco Entertainment Co. (NASDAQ: COOL) is down 16.3% at $0.60; Peregrine Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: PPHM) is down 8.2% at $1.45; and Express Inc. (NYSE: EXPR) is down 2.7% at $18.35 (more coverage here).

Before markets open tomorrow morning we are scheduled to hear from Bright Horizons Family Solutions Inc. (NYSE: BFAM), Men’s Wearhouse Inc. (NYSE: MW), Vera Bradley Inc. (NASDAQ: VRA), Comstock Mining Inc. (NYSEMKT: LODE), and ReneSola Ltd. (NYSE: SOL).

Some standouts among heavily traded stocks today include:

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: SPPI) is down 37.6% at $7.76 after posting a new 52-week low of $7.73 earlier today. The drugmaker lowered full-year guidance today by 40%, and the shorts had a field day.

Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE: VLO) is down 4.4% at $43.53. The oil refiner received an analyst downgrade today linked to the rising cost of renewable fuel credits.

1.5 MW Project Expected to Save School District $112,000 in Energy Costs in First Year, $5.3 Million Over Next 20 Years

BARSTOW, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– SolarCity® (NAS: SCTY) today announces a 1.5-megawatt (MW) solar power project that will bring renewable energy to eight Barstow Unified School District (BUSD) schools and facilities. The solar installations are expected to save the district $112,000 in their first year and roughly $5.3 million over the next 20 years, which will directly benefit classroom instruction constrained by years of budget cuts.

Roughly three-fourths of BUSD‘s students qualify for free or low-cost meals, and district budget reserves have been under strain due to a difficult economy and a high local unemployment rate. But the solar power systems will offset an average of 70% percent of each of the eight facilities’ electricity needs, bringing immediate and long-term savings on energy bills.

“I applaud the school district for making an investment in energy that could potentially redirect millions in savings to our students,” said State Senator Jean Fullerton, who represents Barstow in the 18th District.

Barstow will also join hundreds of other districts across the state in benefiting from state Net Metering policy, which credits solar customers for the surplus clean energy their systems send to the grid for neighbors to consume. Suntech Shutters Arizona Solar Plant

Chinese solar-panel manufacturer Suntech Power is halting production at it Goodyear, Ariz., solar-panel manufacturing facility on April 3, laying off 43 employees in the process.

In a statement announcing the closure, Suntech cited “higher production costs” in the U.S. as contributing to the decision. However, the company also noted that U.S. “import tariffs on solar cells and aluminum frames” manufactured abroad have increased its cost of doing business. Also, “global solar module” production has reached a state of “oversupply,” with the result that Suntech has less pricing power to charge the prices it would like to charge on the modules it produces. As a result, the company is facing higher input costs, and getting lower prices on its output from the factory.

Summing up the situation in a nutshell, Suntech America Managing Director E.L. “Mick” McDaniel observed, “Although it’s a tough time to be a solar manufacturer, there’s never been a better time to be a solar customer.”

For Suntech, the situation has meant production at its Goodyear plant is down from 50 MW of production in 2011, to 15 MW annually as of this past November — and heading for zero. Suntech shares dropped 5.2% on the news Tuesday, closing at $1.09.

My Top 2 Stocks: Apple and Berkshire Hathaway

Stocks are like underwear: The flashy ones get all the visibility, but can cause a whole bunch of trouble. Today, I’m letting readers in on my trustiest pair of stocks, my two top cash holdings that help me sleep at night. I’ll outline my bullish thesis and let you know whether I think there’s a stock sale for you today.

Long on Buffett
When investors decide to put their money behind Berkshire Hathaway , their investing thesis often consists of two words: Warren Buffett. Who can blame them? It’s hardly an original move to let one of the wealthiest men on earth manage your money, but creativity points don’t make money.

My investing thesis begins with Warren Buffett, but it doesn’t stop there. The Oracle of Omaha hasn’t kept his good habits to himself, and Berkshire Hathaway has continually proven that it’s more than its head honcho. Buffett’s assembled a powerful team of level-headed, long-term managers, and the company’s fundamentals continue to propel its financials.

Its sales have increased 50% in the past five years, while diluted EPS has shot up over 175%. Berkshire’s book value lagged the S&P 500 with a 14% increase for 2012, but the company’s market-beating 31% stock return should keep investors smiling.

Warren Buffett has the Midas touch, and he’s got his finger on the pulse of three major industries that mainstream investors have shunned: solar, wind, and rail.

Its 579 MW solar farm purchase from SunPower and partnerships with First Solar and General Electric further affirm that Berkshire has key allies in its quest to turn America green. As an aspiring environmentalist, I can feel good that Buffett has chosen clean and increasingly efficient companies to lead his shareholders into the future.

The company’s recent Heinz investment is the icing (or, rather, ketchup) on my cake: I’m now investing in something I personally know and love.

Apple’s profit pie
Apple is getting cored by Mr. Market, but its 40% dip hasn’t done much to sour my opinion of this stock. Recently, the world’s largest company by market cap, this corporation needs no introduction.

As fellow Fool Eric Bleeker points out, Apple’s 2013 trading frenzy is uncomfortably close to that of a penny stock. Institutional selling may have started the slide, but market rationality comes to those who wait. The company’s massive margins are envious, but its true staying power comes from solid management and $100 billion in cash.

Naysayers point to Samsung as the commoditizer of Apple’s iPhone and iPad, and they may be partially correct. But even if sales tighten, its suite of ever-growing products and services are what convince me of this company’s long-term value.

Aggreko Powers Ahead on Excellent Results

LONDON — Aggreko , the global power and temperature control equipment rental company, rose more than 8% on the week, following this week’s release of its final results for 2012.

Group revenue grew by 13%, to 1,583 million pounds, with trading profit also up 13%, to 388 million pounds, and pre-tax profit 11% higher at 367 million pounds.

In its “Local” business, which operates 194 rental service centers in 47 countries, the company reported a “flawless execution” of its London Olympics contract, a strong performance in its North American operations, and more than 30% growth in emerging-markets business.

Aggreko’s “Power Projects” division reported that revenues were up 15%, although trading profit was down 1%, partly because of increased debt provision. It also said there had been “strong growth” in demand for gas-powered generation.

Earnings per share put on 16%, to 104 pence, and the company is raising its dividend 15% to 23.91 pence, covered a comfortable 4.2 times.

Rupert Soames, Aggreko’s chief executive, commented:

The Local business has had a very strong start to the year, with almost 20% more power on rent than a year ago, helped in part by our acquisition of Poit Energia in April 2012. Encouragingly, growth in the Local business has been broadly spread, with most areas other than Europe showing healthy year-on-year increases in MW on hire.

In Power Projects, we have signed new contracts totalling 140 MW in the year to date, and importantly, we have secured our first large order for our new Heavy Fuel Oil engine, with a 56 MW contract in the Caribbean. We have also secured a contract for 57 MW of diesel-powered generation in Djibouti. Trading continues to be subdued and is likely to remain so in the first half; however, in recent weeks there has been some improvement in the prospect pipeline.

Our expectations for the year as a whole remain unchanged from previous guidance.

The company’s share price is still slightly down on the year to date, owing to a slump at the end of January, and is down almost 20% on this time last year, almost entirely because of a huge sell-off in December, when Aggreko’s management said 2013’s results may well be below 2012’s. Today’s results may well help restore some investor confidence in the company.
