Kevin Smith Readies Walrus Movie

We’re a bit late to the party on this one, but as it’s such an intriguing story, we thought we’d post…

Following the climax of Comic-Con last week, writer-director Kevin Smith took to Facebook to explain that his next film – Tusk – is set to shoot in Los Angeles and on location in Canada in September, in the hope that it will be finished in time for the Sundance Film Festival.

The crazy comes from the fact that the film’s premise comes from a by-now infamous Gumtree advert in which a Brighton resident sought a lodger to dress up as a walrus.

Clerks 3: The Script Is Done

Clerks 3 is done, packaged and in the hands of the Weinsteins, according to actor Jason Mewes. Kevin Smith’s partner in crime swung by IGN Up at Noon this week and updated us on the status of the film. For a while, Smith has been talking about different drafts of the script on his podcast Jay and Silent Bob Get Old, but on Up at Noon, Mewes confirmed the script is done and submitted to The Weinstein Company.

“We’re waiting to hear back from them,” Mewes said. “Hopefully, we’re going to be shooting Clerks III soon.”

The Weinstein brothers produced Clerks and Clerks 2. If they pass, Smith would need to find a different studio.

Frontier Communications Announces 2012 Network Enhancements, Capital Investments in New York

ROCHESTER, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Frontier Communications (NAS: FTR) recently announced that 2012 network enhancements and capital investments for its operations in New York totaled more than $123.6 million. Frontier offers broadband, digital phone service, satellite television service, Frontier satellite broadband, FTR Energy Services, customer premises equipment (telephone systems, support for commercial businesses and e-911 applications), Ethernet, Dedicated Internet Access, data center services, and web security/data back-up through the Frontier Secure suite of services.

“In 2012, we targeted significant capital investments to upgrade our network technology throughout New York,” said Kevin Smith, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Frontier’s New York operations. “We aggressively deployed new equipment and augmented devices with our customers at the center of our decisions. We completed infrastructure improvements to our existing facilities to provide faster broadband speeds at better prices.”

Based on recent network enhancements, Frontier residential customers can consider different speed options for household broadband usage: Broadband Ultra, with speeds starting at up to 12 Mbps, for online gaming, downloading tunes and watching movies, with speed to spare; and Broadband Ultimate, with speeds up to 25 Mbps, allowing the entire family to play the games in real time, watch HD movies, and send large files in seconds.

“We are able to deliver these products thanks to the installation of IP-based DSLAMs, Bonded ADSL2+ (asymmetric digital subscriber line) and VDSL (very high speed digital subscriber lines). These equipment upgrades impacted 155 of Frontier’s 194 switching offices and 214 remote DSLAM/switches in our New York markets. As a result, by year-end 2012 we were able to offer faster speeds to essentially 403,000 New York households,” said Smith.

Smith noted that interoffice data transport networks within the Rochester and Chenango markets are currently being upgraded to 10 Gig Ethernet Ring Protection Switching (ERPS) topology. He said that this new network will support current and future data services to Frontier’s customers and increase bandwidth.

For business customers, the company’s capital expenditures focused on increasing the availability of advanced high-capacity services such as Metro-Ethernet, providing speeds of 1 Gbps or higher. Frontier’s network also delivers Dedicated Internet Access, an IP-VPN service that rides over an MPLS network, and point-to-point services. “Businesses sectors such as healthcare, education, banking and manufacturing are looking for solutions that differentiate them from their competitors. Frontier specializes in designing converged networks that enable businesses to use a single network to carry voice, video and data services and which may allow them to …read more

Kevin Smith Wants to Make Clerks III a Book

For a time, director Kevin Smith had mulled over the idea of making his third Clerks movie into a Broadway show. Later, he said that Clerks III could still potentially be his final feature film. Now, the filmmaker is considering the idea of making it into a book first.

As Smith revealed to What’s Trending, the idea would be to release the book chapter by chapter online, allowing him to reflect on feedback from fans as he’s writing it, while also deeply exploring the characters in a much more personal way. For example, Smith said that the first chapter would depict the characters Dante and Randall meeting for the first time in kindergarden.

Jay And Silent Bob Actor Jason Mewes Believes ESports Is A Legitimate Sport

    By John Gaudiosi, Contributor

For what it’s worth, the new movie Noobz, which is now out on DVD after a brief and limited theatrical run, celebrates eSports. The independent comedy was filmed in Hollywood by writer/director/producer Blake Freeman and puts pro gaming front and center. There are even cameos from pro gamers in the movie. One of the bigger names in the movie is Jason Mewes, who’s best known for his role as Jay in Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob movie franchise. Mewes, a diehard gamer, talks about the explosion of eSports and explains why he believes pro gaming is a legitimate sport in this exclusive interview. …read more

    Noobz DVD Review

Cody is a dick, Andy is the glue, Hollywood’s a sham and Oliver might be gay. Together these Gears of War gamers must stick together in order to try and win $400,000 at the Cyberbowl Championship in Noobz, an earnest but fiercely flat indie comedy about gaming culture.

Jeremy Piven-esque writer/director Blake Freeman, who also plays Cody, piles on tepid, tired gags in the vein of National Lampoon while trying to infuse Noobz with the deeper, wordier male-bonding aspects of Kevin Smith‘s View Askew films. Sometimes it feels like you’re watching an unlikable frat boy romp and the next second it’s Chasing Amy, with each side nullifying the other. Kevin Smith-player Jason Mews, surprisingly, gives us Mews-lite here, acting as possibly the least inept, dysfunctional member of his gaming “clan.” So there are aspects of Noobz I admire, namely the by-your-own-bootstraps filmmaking, but the comedy just isn’t there.

The Lost Nic Cage Superman Movie

Director/Producer Jon Schnepp (Metalocalypse, Grimm’s Fairy Tales and The ABC’s of Death) has launched a Kickstarter campaign to finance his documentary about Tim Burton‘s doomed comic book movie: Superman Lives. The documentary would look at the death of what Schnepp contends would have been the most original, and strangest, version of Superman ever to grace the silver screen.

Here is a snapshot: Tim Burton directs Nicolas Cage as Superman from a script by Kevin Smith that features rainbow robot outfits, Brainiac Skull ships, Superman not “flying” but fighting a giant spider and polar bears guarding the Fortress of Solitude.
