Screen saver mode at work

By samnyc

Hi,

At work, the PC Windows 7 goes to screen saver mode after 10 minutes. I don’t have access to change that. It’s grayed out for me. After 10 minutes, the IM will say ” AWAY” and my email status will say ” AWAY “. Email and IM both are from Microsoft.

My question is there any work around such as some software which will not enable the screensaver.

Thanks

The Perfect Desktop – OpenSUSE 12.3 (GNOME Desktop)

HowtoForge: This tutorial shows how you can set up an OpenSUSE 12.3 desktop that is a full-fledged replacement for a Windows desktop, i.e. that has all the software that people need to do the things they do on their Windows desktops. The advantages are clear: you get a secure system without DRM restrictions that works even on old hardware, and the best thing is: all software comes free of charge.

The software I propose as default is the one I found easiest to use and best in their functionality – this won’t necessarily be true for your needs, thus you are welcome to try out the applications listed as alternatives.

I do not issue any guarantee that this will work for you!

1 Preliminary Note

To fully replace a Windows desktop, I want the OpenSUSE 12.3 desktop to have the following software installed:

Graphics:

  • Pinta – open source drawing application modeled after Paint.NET
  • KolourPaint – paint application with elemental functions
  • The GIMP – free software replacement for Adobe Photoshop
  • Shotwell Photo Manager – full-featured personal photo management application for the GNOME desktop

Internet:

  • Firefox
  • Opera
  • Chromium – Google’s open-source browser
  • Thunderbird – email and news client
  • Evolution – combines e-mail, calendar, address book, and task list management functions
  • Deluge – free cross-platform BitTorrent client
  • Transmission BitTorrent Client – Bittorrent client
  • qBittorrent – free alternative to µtorrent
  • Marble – desktop globe similar to google earth
  • GoogleEarth – Google’s desktop globe
  • Flash Player 11
  • FileZilla – multithreaded FTP client
  • Pidgin IM Client – multi-platform instant messaging client
  • Skype (only for 32 bit systems)
  • Dropbox Client – cloud storage
  • Gwibber Social Client – open-source microblogging client (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)

Office:

  • Adobe Reader
  • Evince – document viewer
  • Okular – document viewer
  • LibreOffice Writer – replacement for Microsoft Word
  • LibreOffice Calc – replacement for Microsoft Excel
  • GnuCash – double-entry book-keeping personal finance system, similar to Quicken
  • Scribus – open source desktop publishing (DTP) application

Sound & Video:

  • Banshee – audio player, can encode/decode various formats and synchronize music with Apple iPods
  • Amarok – audio player
  • MPlayer – media player (video/audio), supports WMA
  • Rhythmbox Music Player – audio player, similar to Apple’s iTunes, with support for iPods
  • gtkPod – software similar to Apple’s iTunes, supports iPod, iPod nano, iPod shuffle, iPod photo, and iPod mini
  • Sound Juicer CD Extractor – CD ripping tool, supports various audio codecs
  • XMMS – audio player similar to Winamp
  • Clementine – Amarok 1.4 fork
  • VLC Media Player – media player, plays all kinds of videos (video/audio)
  • Totem – media player (video/audio)
  • Xine – media player, supports various formats; can play DVDs
  • Winff – free video converter
  • SoundConverter – free audio converter
  • Soundkonverter – free audio converter
  • K3B – CD/DVD burning program
  • Brasero – CD/DVD burning program
  • Audacity – free, open source, cross platform digital audio editor
  • Kino – free digital video editor
  • dvd::rip – full featured DVD copy program

Other:

  • VirtualBox – lets you run your old Windows desktop as a virtual machine under your Linux desktop, so you don’t have to entirely abandon Windows
  • TrueType fonts
  • Java
  • gedit – simple text editor

The software provided in the above list covers most of the basic tasks one might need to do on their desktop computers, sometimes there are multiple choices for same functionality. If you know which one you like best, you obviously don’t need to install and test the other applications, however if you like choice, then of course you can install more than one.

I’m using the OpenSUSE 12.3 Live-DVD in this tutorial to set up the system. You can download it from here: http://software.opensuse.org/123/en

I will use the username howtoforge in this tutorial, and I will download all necessary files to howtoforge’s desktop which is equivalent to the directory /home/howtoforge/Desktop. If you use another username, please replace howtoforge with your own username. So when I use a command such as

cd /home/howtoforge/Desktop

you must replace howtoforge.

2 Installing The Base System

Download the OpenSUSE 12.3 Live-DVD iso image, burn it onto a DVD, and boot your computer from it. Select Installation.

BowLeven Reveals $9 Million First-Half Loss and $90 Million Net Cash

By Maynard Paton, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

LONDON — The shares of BowLeven have bounced 3.4% to 98.5 pence as of 9 a.m. EDT after the oil and gas explorer revealed a $9 million first-half loss.

The half-year income statement showed revenue of zero, administration costs of $6 million, and adverse currency movements of $3 million. The AIM-quoted company also revealed that its net cash position had dropped from $142 million to $90 million during the six months to Dec. 31 following capital expenditure of $46 million.

Kevin Hart, chief executive of BowLeven, said:

The recent IM-5 results, which significantly exceeded our pre-drill expectations, have placed us in great stead to deliver the staged development of Etinde. The substantial uplift in both gas and liquids volumes ensures we can move forward with the development plan and gas sales agreement knowing we are underpinned by an extremely robust project. … We remain convinced that Bowleven is ideally positioned to become a major contributor to Cameroon‘s hydrocarbon production for years to come and we have the funding flexibility to deliver this potential.

The drilling results of IM-5, a well off the coast of Cameroon, were published earlier this month and showed the amount of “wet gas initially in place” rising 162% to 1.2 billion cubic feet.

The current share price values BowLeven at about 292 million pounds, which, given the group’s cash reserves, suggests that a fair amount of the market cap is based on the amount of gas that could be recoverable from the waters off Cameroon. Indeed, since its 2004 flotation, the company has never sold any gas (or oil), while some $780 million has been raised from shareholders and losses of $165 million have been accumulated. The balance sheet shows capitalized exploration expenditure of $479 million, too.

Still, BowLeven saw its shares surge from as low as 33 pence to as high as 390 pence during 2009 and 2010, while news of a bid during 2012 prompted a sudden 50% price spike. That sort of share price potential is always possible with resources shares such as BowLeven.

Anyway, if you already own BowLeven shares and are keen to earn handsome returns from other oil and gas explorers, this free Motley Fool report could help you on your way. “How To Unearth Great Oil & Gas Shares” explains the factors you need to consider — and the risks you might encounter — when evaluating smaller oil and gas explorers. 8×8 Enhances Virtual Office Business Phone Service With New Native Desktop Application

Never miss a call again, with improved audio quality

SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– 8×8, Inc. (NAS: EGHT) , provider of innovative cloud-based communication and computing solutions, today introduced a new Virtual Office Desktop softphone application for its award-winning Virtual Office business VoIP and Virtual Office Pro unified communications solutions.

Virtual Office Desktop provides all of the same functionality of the Virtual Office Online browser application in a more robust native Windows and Mac application. Integrating a business softphone with one-on-one video calling, web and video conferencing along with visual voicemail, 8×8’s update to Virtual Office Desktop also includes enterprise grade IM (instant messaging) and presence along with fax, and social media feeds, all found in one easy to use application.

Benefits of Virtual Office Desktop include:

  • Better call and message notification: For web applications, users need to launch a browser and navigate to a web page that can get hidden behind other browser tabs, making it easy to miss calls and chats. As a native Windows and Mac app, Virtual Office Desktop automatically launches when the computer starts. The app shows system alerts or screen pops in the foreground when incoming calls, IMs and faxes are received. Calls can ring both a headset and the computer speakers in case the user has temporarily put down his or her headset.
  • Simplified user interface and compact design: Saves screen space while providing quick access to a personal and corporate directory, soft phone, online meetings and faxes. The History tabprovides an easily searchable archive of call logs, chats, meeting info, recordings and social media feeds.
  • Improved call quality: Echo cancellation and native support for advanced speech codecs improve audio quality on Windows, even with low bandwidth connections.

“8×8 strives to provide the best communications tools across all connected devices,” said 8×8 Senior Product Manager Phillip Liu. “While customers appreciate the convenience of quickly accessing 8×8’s unified communications app through any web …read more

Jabber/XMPP with latest Plasma Active on Nexus 7

accounts-ui

With the latest Plasma Active rootfs tarball for Nexus 7 there is also working Jabber/XMPP. I didn’t notice this at first as the system time was set two years in the past and due to this the certificate for the Jabber server was silently failing.

Essentially, instant messaging functionality is provided via telepathy. This way different IM protocols (like Jabber/XMPP or ICQ) can be used. Right now there is “just” support for Jabber/XMPP working in the current Plasma Active version.

The tools/apps used for getting everything to work are the apps from Nemomobile: accounts-ui and qmlmessages (“Messages” in apps view). Both come pre-installed with the latest Plasma Active Nexus 7 rootfs tarball.

I set up Jabber/XMPP as follows:

  1. Open the “accounts-ui” app.
  2. Add a new XMPP account (first field is username@jabber-server.com, second field is the password).
  3. Click the newly created account.
  4. In the menu chose first “Enable” and afterwards “Request Online”.
  5. Refresh. You should see your presence (in the field “Current:”) change to “available”.

Make sure that your system time is set properly and that your jabber-server has a valid SSL certificate. Self-signed certificates (e.g., as is the case for jabber.org) won’t work. Also note that you won’t get feedback if something with the certificate is wrong. It will simply appear to be stuck in changing your presence.

To chat open the qmlmessages (“Messages” in apps view) app and start a chat with someone. The “To:” name is your-buddies-username@your-buddies-jabber-server.org.

KDE Telepathy Enters Hard Feature Freeze

With KDE Telepathy 0.5.3 out the door out our entire focus is on 0.6.0 our next major release. We have just entered a hard feature freeze to allow for a solid month of bugfixing.

Important Dates

Hard Feature Freeze – 3rd March

A hard feature freeze is when no new features can be added to the code. All work has to be on fixing bugs and polishing.

Beta Release – 6th March

We will make a public beta release so you can see all the new features and provide useful feedback before the full release.

String freeze – 16th March
After this date we are not able to change any of the text used by our applications, It gives our translator team a stable set of text (strings) to work with without us changing them the whole time.

The release – 30th March
Hopefully self-explanatory 🙂

What’s going to be new in 0.6?

Find out yourselves by running the latest code 🙂
A real announcement will come with the official beta release.

How do I run the latest code?

KTp is generally really stable as all the developers use IM on a daily basis always running the latest code. It helps us to have lots of people running the latest code before we release a piece of software so we know about, and can fix, issues from a wide variety of set ups as we introduce new code, before it hits the general masses.

It helps us, and you get to be on the “bleeding edge”. Please report all bugs as they come in.

Kontact-Nepomuk Integration: Why data from akonadi is indexed in nepomuk

So Akonadi is already a “cache” for your PIM-data, and now we’re trying hard to feed all that data into a second “cache” called Nepomuk, just for some searching? We clearly must be crazy.

The process of keeping these to caches in sync is not entirely trivial, storing the data in Nepomuk is rather expensive, and obviously we’re duplicating all data. Rest assured we have our reasons though.

  • Akonadi handles the payload of items stored in it transparently, meaning it has no idea what it is actually caching (apart from some hints such as mimetypes). While that is a very good design decision (great flexibility), it has the drawback that we can’t really search for anything inside the payload (because we don’t know what we’re searching through, where to look, etc)
  • The solution to the searching problem is of course building an index, which is a cache of all data optimized for searching. It essentially structures the data in a way that content->item lookups become fast (while normal usage does this the other way round). So that already means duplicating all your data (more or less), because we’re trading disk-space and memory for searching speed. And Nepomuk is what we’re using as index for that.

Now there would of course be simpler ways to build an index for searching than using Nepomuk, but Nepomuk provides way more opportunities than just a simple, textbased index, allowing us to build awesome features on top of it, while the latter would essentially be a dead end.

To build that cache we’re doing the following:

  • analyze all items in Akonadi
  • split them up into individual parts such as (for an email example): subject, plaintext content, email addresses, flags
  • store that separated data in Nepomuk in a structured way

This results in networks of data stored in Nepomuk:

PersonA [hasEMailAddress] addressA
PersonA [hasEMailAddress] addressB
emailA [hasSender] addressA
emailB [hasSender] addressB

So this “network” relates emails to email-addresses, and email-addresses to contacts, and contacts to actual persons, and suddenly you can ask the system for all emails from a person, no matter which of the person’s email-addresses have been used in the mails. Of course we can add to that IM conversations with the same Person, or documents you exchanged during that conversation, … the possibilities are almost endless.

Based on that information much more powerful interfaces can be written. For instance one could write a communication tool which doesn’t really care anymore which communication channel you’re using and dynamically mixes IM and email depending on whether/where the other person is currently available for a chat or would rather have a mail, which can be read later on, and doing so without splitting the conversation across various mail/chat interfaces.
This is of course just one example of many (neither am I claiming the idea, it’s just a nice example for what is possible).

So that’s basically why we took the difficult route for searching (At least that is why I am working on this).

Now, we’re not quite there yet, but we already start to get the first fruits of …read more

Worshiping Jesus In The Mosque: A Response

By Amy Spreeman

Jesus SC Worshiping Jesus in the Mosque: A response

Can one be a Buddhist, Hindu, or Muslim believer of Jesus? And can they do this without persecution?

A growing number of Christians and church leaders are stopping to consider that this idea may actually be possible, thanks to “Insider Movement” groups that have been pushing this idea forward for the past decade, especially in the Muslim mission field. Now those ideas are gaining ground in the West, as Christians embrace these controversial methods.

The most recent issue of Christianity Today is giving a whole lot of print space to Insider Movement (IM) proponents, who believe that it is not necessary for believers to convert to Christianity, a term often associated with baggage and most certainly persecution if outed as “Christian.”

This should immediately send you running for your Bible and asking some key questions about what Scripture has to say about the blending of two very different and opposing faiths vs. a full conversion to Christianity.

“Therefore go out from (among unbelievers), and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you.” (2 Cor 6:17)

The January issue of CT contains the headlines Why Evangelicals Should Be Thankful for Muslim Insiders, arguing thatInsider followers of Jesus may not have changed religions, but their lives have been changed by Christ,” and the provocative headline Worshiping Jesus in the Mosque, in which a reporter interviews a “Muslim follower of Isa.”

But instead of comparing what IM-ers teach to what the Bible says and asking questions, Christians are saying, “cool!”

“Where is the outcry of pastors in America because of this? Nobody is challenging these methods, and it boggles my mind that churches subscribe to this,” says Elijah Abraham, a born-again Christian who was raised a Muslim believer in Iraq, and today is the founder and executive director of Living Oasis Ministries, reaching Muslims with the Gospel.

Abraham is part of Biblical Missiology, the think-tank group that recently petitioned Wycliffe and its partners for removing familial terms like Son and Father to describe God and Jesus from Arabic Bible translations used to reach Muslim communities.

Abraham points out that John Travis (the writer of Why Evangelicals Should Be Thankful for Muslim Insiders), is one of godfathers of the Insider Movement. Abraham encourages readers to examine the IM leaders through the lens of a video he highly recommends titled Half Devil Half Child, in which even the Muslim Imams say these teachings are not Christianity.

We know that Christians in Islamic nations are being brutally slaughtered simply because their identity is in Christ. Persecution is on the rise, and that’s risky for Muslims who embrace Christ yet want to stay within their Islamic community. Yet the core doctrines of belief, repentance, and preaching Jesus Christ and HIM crucified (not the Muslim “Isa”) for the forgiveness of sins is not the focus of IM methodology.

CT conducted an interview with one insider named “Abu Jaz,” a key leader in a movement that describes itself as the People of the Gospel. CT reports that this group represents several thousand Muslims in eastern Africa who have converted to faith in Christ during the past decade, but who have remained in their Muslim communities.

Abu Jaz describes his conversion after dining with a guest in his home, and their sparse meal of macaroni began to multiply in the bowl.

Afterward I lay down on the bed, and as I slept, Isa came to me and asked me, “Do you know who multiplied the macaroni?” I said, “I don’t know.” He said, “I am Isa al Masih. If you follow me, not only the macaroni but your life will be multiplied.”

He didn’t tell me that he was God; he didn’t tell me that he died on behalf of me; he didn’t say, “I am the Son of God.” He didn’t talk to me about any complicated theological issues. He only told me that if I followed him, he would multiply my life. Isa al Masih came to my home with the kingdom of God. He didn’t completely explain theological issues, he only said, “If you will follow.”

Abraham, who has interviewed hundreds of converts in many nations, doesn’t doubt Abu’s story of dreams and visions. In fact, he says true converts do have dreams and visions; and they’ve paid a heavy price. But the Jesus they encounter is never confusing or vague about who He is. And the fact that Abu maintains a Muslim rather than an African identity troubles him. “You would think after Bible school, Abu would reject Islam,” Abraham says. “Abu never contradicts the Qur’anic version of Isa, and the interviewer didn’t even challenge the convert to ask if the Allah he was talking about was the triune God of the Bible or Allah of the Qur’an.”

He points out that the title, Worshiping Jesus in the Mosque is very misleading, since the reporter does not mention anyone actually worshiping Christ in a mosque. “The Christianity Today title is only intended to persuade the readership that it is possible to worship Jesus in the mosque. Three problems: Any mosque will be offended if Jesus is worshiped inside its walls. Second, any Christian from a Muslim Background will tell you that the mosque is not the place to go to worship Jesus. Finally, if you go to a mosque, you have already denied Him.”

But, a church isn’t a building; it is people. Abraham contends that the so-called Muslim-culture church is an oxymoron.

“Muslim-culture church? What in the world does that mean? If their identity is Islam, and not Christianity, are they really set apart?

Abraham says insiders who say they are converts are the most confused individuals he has ever found. “They are confused in their theology and identity, and they’re still loyal to Mohammad, so you’ve got problems there.”

As for Christian churches embracing these methods, he says there are many missionaries and leaders who will try to cover up their IM connections from their congregants so as to diffuse critics. He says church members who do question the Insider Movement methods in their churches are often met with a guilt trip for criticizing them for not actually traveling overseas and meeting Muslims.

“To that I would say, ‘you know, you are right. But I read your article and compared your methods to Scripture, and it does line up.’”

Microsoft plans to shut down Messenger on March 15

Microsoft plans to shut down Messenger (formerly Windows Live Messenger) on March 15, according to numerous reports. The concrete date comes after the company in late 2012 said the longstanding instant messaging client would merge with Skype during the first three months of 2013. The software giant is reportedly notifying Messenger users via e-mail but it has yet to announce the Messenger deadline on its blogs or social media accounts.

News of the Messenger official shut down date was first reported by The Next Web and widely reported by others.

Until March 15, Messenger users will see a notification on their desktop client asking them to “upgrade” to Skype and merge their Messenger contacts with the popular video chat and IM app. The desktop program will continue to work until March 15, after which you won’t be able to use Messenger at all and must move over to Skype to continue chatting with friends.
