Judge begins first hearing on Detroit's bankruptcy

A judge is considering what to do with challenges to Detroit’s bankruptcy from retirees who claim their pensions are protected by the Michigan Constitution. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes settled into his chair shortly after 10 a.m. EDT. The city wants him to put a stop to lawsuits in other courts, especially after an Ingham County judge said state officials ignored the constitution and acted illegally in approving the bankruptcy last week.

Large coronal hole near the sun's north pole

The European Space Agency/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, or SOHO, captured this image of a gigantic coronal hole hovering over the sun’s north pole on July 18, 2013, at 9:06 a.m. EDT. Coronal holes are dark, low density regions of the sun’s outermost atmosphere, the corona. They contain little solar material, have lower temperatures, and therefore, appear much darker than their surroundings. …read more

'Schindler's List' reportedly to be auctioned on eBay

“Schindler’s List” is being auctioned off on eBay.

No, not a DVD of the Oscar-winning Steven Spielberg film, but one of the original Schindler’s lists — the only one ever to go on the open market — will be publicly auctioned tonight on the popular shopping Web site.

The reserve price is an eye-popping $3 million.

But its sellers, California collectors Gary Zimet and Eric Gazin, are hoping it will go for as high as $5 million.

“Enter US $3,000,000.00 or more” the listing will instruct bidders when it goes live at 9 p.m. EDT, according to an advance copy obtained by The Post.

“Free Local Pickup” the listing will advise. “Item location: Israel.”

“We decided to sell the list on eBay because it has over 100 million worldwide members, and this is a global story,” Gazin told The Post.

“There are billionaires using the site, wealthy celebrities,” said Gazin, who is the president of AuctionCause.com. “We like the platform.”

The “list” was named for Oskar Schindler, a businessman from Germany who is credited with saving more than 1,000 Jewish refugees from the Nazis by deeming them essential workers for his enamel-works factories.

Of the seven original versions of the list, only four are known to still exist — including two in Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust Memorial Museum, and one in the US Holocaust Museum in Washington.

The one being offered for sale on eBay tonight is 14 onion-skin pages long.

The date April 18, 1945, is written in pencil on the first page. It lists 801 male names.

“It is extremely rare that a document of this historical significance is put on the market,” Zimet said.

“Many of the survivors on this list and their descendants moved to the United States, and there are names on this list which will sound very familiar to New Yorkers.”

Orbital Sciences Rocket Launch Delayed Because Of Winds At NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility

By The Huffington Post News Editors

By: Tariq Malik
Published: 04/20/2013 04:53 PM EDT on SPACE.com

The launch debut of a new privately built rocket will have to wait at least one more day after strong winds thwarted an attempted liftoff on Saturday (April 20).

The unmanned Antares rocket was poised to launch into orbit Saturday afternoon from a new seaside pad at NASA‘s Wallops Flight Facility along Virginia’s Eastern Shore when the foul weather intervened. The rocket’s next chance to launch occurs Sunday (April 21) at 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT).

Orbital Sciences had hoped to launch Antares at 5 p.m. EDT on Saturday, but unacceptably strong winds in the upper atmosphere — which could pose a risk to the rocket in mid-flight — prompted them to delay liftoff by an hour at first, then call off the attempt altogether. [LaunchPad Photos: 1st Antares Rocket Ready to Fly]

It is the second delay in three days for Antares’ debut launch. A minor equipment glitch led Orbital officials to call off a launch try on Wednesday (April 17) when a data cable at the pad separated from the rocket earlier than planned.

Built by the Dulles, Va.-based spaceflight firm Orbital Sciences Corp., the Antares rocket is a 13-story booster designed to launch the company’s unmanned Cygnus spacecraft on cargo delivery missions to the International Space Station. Orbital has a $1.9 billion contract to provide at least eight cargo delivery flights to the station using Cygnus and Antares.

For this first flight, the Antares rocket will not be carrying an active Cygnus spacecraft into orbit. Instead, the rocket is topped with a cylindrical “mass simulator” that mimics the shape and weight of an actual Cygnus vehicle, officials said. The mockup is also equipped with 70 sensors to measure the effects of launch on an Antares vehicle.

Orbital has also added three tiny NASA satellites — coffee-cup-size Phonesats — and a small commercial cubesat called Dove-1 to the mass simulator for this test flight. The miniature satellites will be deployed in orbit after launch, Orbital officials said.

NASA‘s Phonesats are experiments designed to test how well commercial smartphones can be used as the main computers on cheap satellites.

Orbital Sciences is one of two American spaceflight companies with NASA contracts for commercial resupply missions to the International Space Station. The other firm is Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) of Hawthorne, Calif., which has a $1.6 billion contract to fly at least 12 cargo delivery missions to the space station using its Falcon 9 rockets and robotic Dragon space capsules.

SpaceX launched its first test flight to the station in May 2012 and has flown two official cargo deliveries since then. NASA retired its space shuttle fleet in 2011 and is relying on private spacecraft to keep the space station stocked with supplies. The space agency also plans to begin flying American astronauts to the station on commercial spacecraft by 2017.

Are Bonds Announcing a Stock Market Correction?

By Alex Dumortier, CFA, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

This week’s see-saw dynamic in U.S. stocks continues this morning, with the S&P 500 and the narrower, price-weighted Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.65% and 0.55%, respectively, at 10:05 a.m. EDT.

Moving in separate directions
Even before this week’s stock market gyrations, which were kicked off by a sharp decline on Monday, many investors and pundits had been loudly calling for a correction. Indeed, the market‘s rally since last year’s June low has been a dogged, low-volatility climb that appeared to break from the “risk-on/risk-off” dynamic that has governed asset markets in the aftermath of the financial crisis, despite the fact that many of the same macroeconomic headwinds remain.

One ominous sign for stocks can be found not in the stock market, but in bonds, with Treasury bonds in particular finding new favor with investors since early March. Bill Gross, who manages PIMCO’s Total Return Fund, the world’s largest bond fund, has lifted its allocation to U.S. Treasuries to 33% against 28% in February — the highest it has been since July. The decline in yields suggests that the risk of deflation, or at least a slowdown in the economy, has increased.

As the following graph shows, bonds’ new-found popularity shows up in a split between the charts of the 10-year Treasury yield and the S&P 500’s level over the past month (as bond prices increase, yields decline):

Note that a drop in yields (blue line) has accompanied the stock market wobbles in mid-2011 and during the second quarter of 2013:

While I’m not convinced that a stock market correction is imminent, I do think this week is a healthy reminder that stock prices do not move only in one direction. Volatility had been remarkably muted over the past several months, and investors need to accept that this is unlikely to be the status quo on an ongoing basis.

Why Bank of America Is Down Despite Quadrupled Profit

By Alex Dumortier, CFA, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

After posting solid gains yesterday, U.S. stocks are falling hard this morning, with the S&P 500 and the narrower, price-weighted Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.87% and 0.7%, respectively, at 10 a.m. EDT.

Bank of America still looks cheap
I’ve been a student of Finance and the financial markets for years, and yet I still fall into this trap. After reading the first part of the Reuters headline “Bank of America profits quadruple,” I immediately checked the quote page and was briefly, almost instinctively, surprised to find that the shares were down in premarket trading. I shouldn’t have been; as Howard Marks writes in the excellent book The Most Important Thing: “First level thinking says, ‘I think the company’s earnings will fall; sell.’ Second-level thinking says, ‘I think the company’s earnings will fall less than people expect, and the pleasant surprise will lift the stock; buy.'”

In other words, expectations provide the context necessary to analyze results and their impact on the share price. And so it was that B of A’s quarterly profit rose to $2.62 billion in the first quarter from $653 million in the prior year period, which worked out to $0.20 per share; alas, analysts were looking for $0.22. In addition, total adjusted revenue fell 4%.

It pays to remain focused on what matters relative to your investing style. Mimicking Marks‘ above distinction, I’d say a trader is concerned with the impact of quarterly earnings on the share price, whereas a long-term investor focuses on what earnings can tell us about a company’s future earning power. In that regard, B of A’s results look encouraging on a number of fronts: Brian Moynihan is doing a creditable job shrinking costs, and the provision for loan losses continues to decline, while capitalization ratios continue to improve.

Based on the newly released end-of-first-quarter balance sheet data, Bank of America shares are changing hands at roughly a 10% discount to their tangible book value this morning, and they still look like an attractive (i.e., underpriced) risk to me.

Bank of America’s stock doubled in 2012. Is there more yet to come? With significant challenges still ahead, it’s critical to have a solid understanding of this megabank before adding it to your portfolio. In The Motley Fool’s premium research report on B of A, analysts Anand Chokkavelu and Matt Koppenheffer lift the veil on the bank’s operations, detailing three reasons to buy and three reasons to sell. American Airlines reservations system down, flights grounded nationwide

American Airlines flights across the country are grounded because of computer problems.

American asked the Federal Aviation Administration to halt its flights until 5 p.m. EDT. Flights on regional affiliate American Eagle heading to Dallas, Chicago or New York’s LaGuardia Airport have been stopped until 3:30 p.m. EDT.

Some passengers are stuck on planes while others can’t make reservations.

Passengers are using social media to flood the airline with complaints.

American Airlines spokesman Kent Powell said Tuesday that the airline is trying to resolve the issues as quickly as it can.

On Twitter, American is sending out apologies but not offering customers much information about when the problem will be fixed.
