The One Thing Successful People Don't Do (And 9 Famous Examples)

By David K. Williams, Contributor

In the months leading up to the launch of my book, The 7 Non-Negotiables of Winning, I’ve talked a lot about winning—but I’ve talked a lot about failing, too. Learning how to fail productively—to “Fail Up”—is one of the greatest secrets to full-on success. And in that vein, I was impressed with a recent article by business author Bernard Marr. He pointed out that there is one single thing that all “radically successful” people have in common: They have a ferocious drive and hunger for success that makes them never give up. There are many varieties of success. Jobs and careers are one area, but success in family life, personal relationships, community and church work, philanthropy and sports or treasured hobbies are important success priorities as well. One thing is certain: There is no clear and definitive path to success for anyone. The most successful people in any endeavor will tell you many stories of failure within their life journeys. Many (if not all) have experienced major failures, multiple times. But they never gave up. As I have said many times, the greatest secret to success is learning how to “Fail Up.” It would even be fair to say that failure is the driver that makes truly successful people even more hungry and determined to achieve their success. In his article, Marr presented a list of nine famous successful people whose failures helped to spur their success. I would like to share them with you, along with some of my own thoughts on each: 1.     Henry Ford stands tall as a pioneer of modern business, yet this founder of the Ford Motor Company failed many times on his route to success. His first business attempt at building a motor car was shuttered after just a year and a half when stockholders lost confidence in his ability to succeed. He gathered more cash and re-started his effort, but a year later was forced out of his own company yet again. The entire motor industry had lost faith in Henry Ford, but he was not deterred. He found another investor to start the Ford Motor Company, and the rest is history. …read more

ETC: Ford celebrates its founder's 150th birthday around the world

By Brandon Turkus

Filed under:

Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company and the man that is widely considered to have put America on wheels, would have been 150 years young today. Naturally, there are celebrations at Ford’s Dearborn headquarters, and the state of Michigan has declared today, July 30, 2013, Henry Ford Day.

While Ford’s flaws are well documented, his institution of the moving assembly line and $5 work day were largely responsible for the middle class explosion in Detroit during the 1910s and 1920s, while vertical integration in his production contributed even further to the affordability of Ford’s products. Ford’s company was also a key component of the Arsenal of Democracy, with the company’s Willow Run Assembly Plant one of the crown jewels of war-time production.

Besides celebrations in Michigan, Ford facilities around the globe are celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founder’s birth. Ford’s German outlet is holding five road rallies over the course of 2013, while 21 markets in the Asia Pacific region have converted showrooms into displays celebrating Ford’s history, as part of Ford Heritage month. There will be more celebrations in the coming months, as well.

Have a look through the gallery above for lots of historical photos of Henry Ford, as well as celebrations taking place in other parts of the world.

Official: Ford, GM to collaborate on 9- and 10-speed transmissions

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Back in October, there were reports that General Motors and Ford Motor Company were hard at work co-developing new nine- and ten-speed automatic transmissions, and now both automakers have confirmed this joint operation. While there are no specific vehicles mentioned to receive either transmission, a collaborative press release issued by GM and Ford mention that the transmission will be designed for front- and rear-wheel-drive cars, crossovers, trucks and SUVs.

These aren’t the first powertrain components developed jointly between these cross-town rivals, either. The six-speed automatic currently used in vehicles like the Ford Edge, Ford Fusion, Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Equinox was engineered in a similar fashion. As is the case with this existing transmission, both automakers will assist in the design, development and testing of the new transmissions, but each will build its own units in its own factories. Scroll down for the official press release.

The Dumbest Way to Buy a New Car

By Dan Caplinger, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

Buying a new car is one of the biggest purchases many people ever make. But even for such a high-priced item, you should steer clear of what’s becoming an increasingly popular way that many car buyers are financing their vehicles.

The scary trend in auto financing
Strapped for cash, more car buyers are taking on long-term loans to buy new vehicles. As a report in The Wall Street Journal discussed earlier this month, the average term for car loans late last year rose to a record-high 65 months. The proportion of loans ranging from six to seven years in length has grown by more than 50% since 2008, and some lenders are even offering 97-month car loans — forcing you to make car payments for more than eight years.

The reason car buyers are taking on such long loans is pretty clear: Longer loans mean lower payments. With auto prices on the rise and even used-car prices remaining strong, buyers have little bargaining power in hoping for discounts and instead have to look to spread their payments out over longer periods of time.

3 reasons long loans are a bad move
Yet even with economic reality requiring many to consider longer auto-loan terms, there are many good reasons to consider alternatives. Even though you may have to put off buying a new car long enough to save more toward down payments, you’ll be in a much better position to avoid these three pitfalls:

1. You’ll be underwater on your car a lot longer.
As soon as you drive your car off the lot, its value drops below what you owe on your loan. With short-term loans, your payments quickly get you back to even, freeing you up to consider options like selling it or trading it in for another vehicle down the road.

With long-term loans, though, it can take years for you to get to the breakeven point. That means if you ever want to get rid of the car, you’ll have to pay extra money upfront just to pay off your loan — even after considering the trade-in value of your vehicle. That’s not a good situation for anyone to be in.

2. You won’t get as many promotional financing deals.
Many auto dealers offer low-cost loans as an incentive to buy. Over the years, Ford , General Motors , and Chrysler all offered great financing deals to compete with more popular Japanese models. With Detroit now having rebounded, Honda and Toyota have also renewed incentives that include financing deals. Even now, Ford offers 0% financing on some of its popular models, including the Focus pictured above.

But Ford’s offer goes only with loans of up to 60 months. If you need longer-term financing, you may well end up paying a much higher interest rate, and combined with having to pay interest for a longer period

Followup: Ford confirms 1.5-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine for 2014 Fusion

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

Earlier this week, reports were swirling ’round the internet about the 2014 Ford Fusion getting a new 1.5-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. That was… half correct. Ford today confirmed that the 2014 Fusion is, in fact, getting a new 1.5-liter EcoBoost mill, but it has four cylinders, not three.

The new 1.5-liter engine will be the fifth EcoBoost powerplant from Ford Motor Company. Initially to be built at the automaker’s Craiova, Romania plant, it will also be offered in the Fusion’s twin, the Mondeo, in other markets. This engine will debut at the Shanghai Motor Show next month, and the 1.5-liter is of particular importance in the Chinese market – there is significant tax relief in the People’s Republic for vehicles powered by engines with a capacity of 1.5 liters or less.

At a media briefing Thursday, Ford declined to divulge exact power or fuel economy numbers, though Joe Bakaj, vice president of powertrain engineering, told Autoblog that power output should be similar to that of the current 1.6-liter inline-four, and that overall efficiency will be “better than the 1.6.” Our earlier report stated that the 1.5-liter four will produce 177 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque – losses of 1 hp and 7 lb-ft versus the 1.6-liter engine. Ford states that the 1.5-liter four will feature many of the same technologies used on the company’s 1.0-liter EcoBoost inline-three, including an integrated exhaust manifold that recaptures much of the engine’s heat.

Ford will release more information regarding the 1.5-liter engine later this year, including availability in the 2014 Fusion. Earlier, we reported that the 1.5 would only be available with Ford’s six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, though the 1.6 would be kept around for those preferring the company’s six-speed manual setup.

Scroll down for more information about the 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine in Ford’s press release.

Report: Fiat boss Elkann being mentored by… Bill Ford?

By Zach Bowman

John Elkann, Fiat Chairman

Filed under:

Fiat Chairman John Elkann has been turning to an unusual source for advice on the car business. While speaking during an interview with The Detroit News, Elkann said he often asks Bill Ford Jr. for advice on how to proceed with the turnaround at Chrysler. “It’s great to have the opportunity to share this with someone like Bill, who has experienced many things and gone through many things … especially linked to Detroit.” Elkann said.

As the Agnelli family heir, Elkann has inherited a long and fruitful friendship with the Ford family. While Giovanni Agnelli built his first Fiat four years before Henry Ford created his first vehicle, it was Ford that showed Agnelli the benefits of mass production and helped pave the way for what would become the Fiat empire.

Giovanni’s grandson, Gianni, helped mentor Bill Ford when he was elected chairman of Ford Motor Company. Now, Ford is returning the favor by helping Elkann navigate the automotive industry’s tumultuous waters.

“I have a lot of admiration for how Bill handled things,” Elkann said. “He’s been very candid and I’m very curious by nature, so being able to listen to real-life experience … is very valuable.”

February 2013: No Leap Day Edition

By John Neff

Filed under:

Last year was a Leap Year, and February 2012 indeed offered automakers an extra day of selling cars compared to the 24 trips around the sun we took last month. Nevertheless, the US auto industry took full advantage of the days they were given and posted a solid month of sales in February 2013.

Among major automakers, Honda America (+12.79 percent), Ford Motor Company (+9.33 percent) and General Motors (+7.17 percent) were the leaders, while Toyota Motor Company (+4.34) and Chrysler Group (+4.11 thanks to a +30.33-percent performance by Dodge) managed to stay positive. Nissan North America, however, fared less well, reporting a drop in year-over-year sales of -6.65 percent.

Among brands, we see many luxury marques near the top, including Bentley (+42.86 percent), Porsche (+30.53 percent), Audi (+27.77 percent), Mercedes-Benz (+23.05 percent), Cadillac (+20.34 percent) and Land Rover (+19.97 percent). If taken as a sign of a recovering economy, then the wealthier among us appear to be leading the way.

You might not be surprised to see Lincoln at the very bottom of the sales pile.

Perhaps more notable are the brands that didn’t do so well in February. Kia (-7.84 percent) has rarely been seen in the red, and even trumpeted a new sales record for January last month. The rare dip is unusual for the Korean automaker, having increased sales four years in a row and experiencing only one month of declining sales last year in December. Likewise, Jeep (-16.48 percent) and Nissan (-7.18 percent) manage to avoid the crimson club most months, but not last month.

You might not be surprised to see Lincoln at the very bottom of the sales performance pile, having reported a large decline of -29.35 percent. Don’t blame the new MKZ just yet, as production has still not yet ramped up to the levels of its predecessor. Lincoln sold 945 new MKZs in February, down 62.0 percent from the year prior, but up 47.9 percent month-over-month.

*Brands and companies are displayed in descending order according to their percentage change in volume sales. There were 24 selling days in February 2013 and 25 selling days in February 2012, so there is a difference between the change in monthly sales volume and the change in average daily sales rate (DSR) for each brand/company. Also, brands are combined and reported as companies only if their sales figures are released jointly.

Word of China's Geely leading bids for Fisker draws criticism from senator

By Jon LeSage

2012 Fisker Karma at speed

Filed under:

Money isn’t the only problem Fisker Automotive has with making more Karma plug-in hybrids (see: battery supply), but the California startup may soon have the cash to help resume production of its $100,000 plug-in luxury sedan. Zhejiang Geely Holding Group has the edge in taking a majority stake in the troubled automaker, according to two confidential insider sources close to Fisker.

Fisker executives have been holding meetings in China with Geely, owner of Sweden’s Volvo, and with state-owned Dongfeng Motor Group Co. The two offers reportedly received by Fisker within the last three weeks were worth between $200 million to $300 million, and both would give a majority stake to the new investor, the sources told Fox Business. The companies involved have declined to comment.

While both Chinese companies are interested, Geely is “more serious” and “passionate” about Fisker and its technology, one of the sources said. The company is also able to move more quickly than Dongfeng, which is hampered by the multi-layered decision-making structure within its Chinese-government ownership. Southern California-based Fisker is under a tight deadline to find a suitor, which certainly favors Geely, the source said.

“Most of all, with Geely we’re dealing with one decision maker,” the individual said, referring to its charismatic founder and chairman, Li Shufu. Geely’s leader is considered an important player in the transaction and has experience from his role in Geely’s acquisition of Volvo from Ford Motor Company in 2010. Geely has also sent a team of engineers to Anaheim, CA, to evaluate Fisker and its technology, the sources said.

The deal would theoretically give Fisker the funds to start building its second and more affordable model, the Atlantic plug-in hybrid, which is expected to start at around $55,000 and could become Fisker’s high-volume vehicle. It’s been about seven months since production stopped on Fisker’s only vehicle, the Karma, but Fisker’s CEO said recently that it will be starting up again soon.

As with the A123 sale before it (which did go to the Chinese company Wanxiang), the potential Fisker deal is getting some political criticism. US Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) told Bloomberg, “Like A123, this looks like another example of taxpayer dollars going to a failed experiment. Technology developed with American taxpayer subsidies should not be sold off to China.”

7 CES announcements IT pros should know about

The Consumer Electronics Show is not only about consumer gadgets, as enterprise vendors such as Dell and Intel tend to announce major new technology advancements as well. CES 2013was no different. Here are the top business tech announcements from Las Vegas.

Sysomos MAP

The Sysomos data analytics tool could be a boon for companies trying to understand their social networking engagement and track a brand worldwide. The tool analyzes two years of data and billions of online posts to determine who is influencing a brand and whether there is positive or negative sentiment. For example, Ford Motor Company could use the tool to find out whether social network posts are favorable to a new model, or American Express could track who is influencing opinions. Detailed charts let users compare an enterprise brand against a competitor and see trends over time.

Intel Personify Chat

There’s a radical new enterprise-grade chat system that will debut this year, and Intel provided a sneak-peek at how it will work at CES 2013. Video overlays of meeting attendees (or whatever you are sharing on your screen) appear over the Web.

The idea is to include the “talking head” of attendees on top of the subject at hand to combine video interaction and collaboration. This promotes better engagement between those in the meeting, as they are always up on the screen.

With its influx of popular new products made in the US, Ford Motor Company has announced that it intends to hire 2,200 new salaried workers domestically this year. This is the biggest increase of salaried workers for Ford in the last 10 years, and it is all a part of Ford’s contract commitment to the United Auto Workers union to bring 12,000 new jobs to the US by 2015.

There were no specifics as to where in the US these job openings will be, but Ford did reiterate that it will be spending $773 million on equipment upgrades and capacity expansion at six plants located in southeast Michigan; as a whole, Ford is investing a total of $6.2 billion to its US assembly plants over the next couple years. According to recently appointed president of the Americas Joe Hinrichs, the new jobs will be focused on areas such as engineering, manufacturing and computer software. Ford will post its job openings online at careers.ford.com, and it will also use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to recruit new workers, including military veterans.
