Exclusive: GM China President says automaker could export vehicles from China to US

By Chris Paukert

GM of China executive Bob Socia at 2013 Shanghai Motor Show

At a press conference on Saturday at the Shanghai Motor Show, General Motors announced plans to further expand its presence in the Chinese market. Among those commitments are plans to build four new plants by the end of 2015, giving the automaker the capacity to produce around five million vehicles a year in the country.

In order to make the most of that expansion, GM is adding 400 dealerships in China this year alone (for a total of 4,200 sales points), and it’s eyeing 5,100 dealers by 2015. Yet not all of that production will stay in ChinaGM is planning to increase exports as well. Officials estimate the company will export somewhere between 100,000 and 130,000 Chinese-built vehicles this year – a record. And it’s gunning for more.

Autoblog asked GM China president Bob Socia (above) if that means the company might eventually export new vehicles built in China to the United States, and he responded:

“It could very well happen. It could very well happen. You know, I’m not sharing any plans with you, but we try to keep open as to what makes sense. And Tim [Lee – GM‘s president of international operations] is the right guy to talk about your manufacturing footprint. If it make sense to tool up a vehicle in one location as opposed to two, from an economic perspective, Tim will say that’s what we should be doing. We’re open to be doing that. There’s no reason why we can’t be exporting to the States, and obviously the States are exporting here.”

Given that the Pan-Asia Technical Automotive Center – GM and Chinese automaker SAIC‘s joint-venture vehicle engineering and design house – is expanding and increasingly calling the shots with Buick, the Tri-Shield brand is arguably the most likely way that Chinese-built vehicles might find their way to the US. GM has sold more Buicks in China than in the States for some time now, and PATAC has been responsible for a growing amount of work on the brand, from taking the lead on styling and engineering for the current LaCrosse to designing showcars like the just-revealed Riviera Concept shown below.

But are there such export plans in place at this time, we asked? “No.”

Report: Volkswagen lays off 500 Chattanooga workers

By Jeffrey N. Ross

The redesigned Volkswagen Passat has been a decent seller since its debut in 2011, but sales have apparently dropped off enough that the automaker is trimming some of the employees from its Chattanooga, TN assembly plant. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen will be cutting shifts and laying off 500 contracted workers in response to slowing sales.

Currently, the plant has three teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Saturday, but starting May 13, this will be reduced down to two teams running 10-hour shifts Monday through Thursday. This will be done to reduce dealer inventory (the article says that VW dealers, on average, have a 97-day supply of Passats) and production capacity (currently running at an annual pace of 170,000 units, which is more than the 150,000 annual units the plant was planned to produce).

This, of course, isn’t saying that the Passat has been a failure since VW added 200 full-time employees to the plant in February 2012 to keep up with increased demand. The AN article says that automakers frequently overstaff plants during the launch of a new product – or in this case, a new product and a new plant – but eventually reduce the workers as things run smoother and more efficiently.

Official: GM investing $200M in powertrain engineering

By Jeffrey N. Ross

General Motors announced that it will be expanding its Global Powertrain Engineering Headquarters in Pontiac, MI at a cost of $200 million in order to consolidate operations and streamline the development of next-generation powertrains for electric, fuel cell and hybrid vehicles. At 450,000 square feet, this facility is already one of the biggest of its kind in the world, and GM is adding an extra 138,000 sq-ft to combine the resources at four engineering and R&D facilities currently spread out across the country into the single location.

The work is expected to be completed during the second half of next year, and it should help GM reduce its development time for future powertrains. Currently, powertrain engineers are spread out from New York to California, but this will put them all under the same roof – so to speak. Global Powertrain Engineering Headquarters is also responsible for development of the heavy-duty transmission used in GM‘s fullsize pickups. This is all part of GM‘s plan to invest more than $1.5 billion in its North American facilities this year, and it will help create 400 new jobs in Pontiac (likely just transfers from the other cities) and cut three leased facilities.

Another aspect of this powertrain consolidation is that the Performance Build Center, which allows Chevrolet Corvette buyers to assemble their own engines, will be moving from Wixom, MI to the Bowling Green Assembly Plant where the ‘Vette is produced.

GM‘s press release is posted after the jump.

Report: GM investing $600M in plant that produces Malibu, LaCrosse

By Michael Harley

General Motors, committed to investing upwards of $2 billion in plant upgrades, has just announced that it is making a $600 million investment in its Fairfax Assembly and Stamping Plant in Kansas City, KS – it is one of the largest investments GM has ever made in a single plant.

Construction is set to begin later this year, and the work will increase the footprint of the facility by 15 percent, bringing its total to to 3.7 million square feet. Production schedules will be unaffected by the work, meaning 4,000 employees will stay on the job.

Fairfax Assembly currently produces the Buick LaCrosse and Chevrolet Malibu. Operating three shifts, a completed vehicle rolls out the door every 58 seconds. The present facility was completed in 1987, but since it first opened in 1945 Fairfax has manufactured more than 12 million vehicles.

Official: Volkswagen to build Golf in Mexico in 2014

By Jeffrey N. Ross

As a part of its plan to produce more than 75 percent of its North American-sold products in North America, Volkswagen will be building the 2014 Golf at its Puebla, Mexico assembly plant. We first reported on the possibility of this move back in October, but VW recently confirmed the news. Golf models built in Mexico would be sold in both North and South America.

Production of the new Golf in Puebla – alongside the Jetta and Beetle – will commence during the first quarter of 2014, and the car will go on sale in the US sometime during the second half of next year.

After the Golf, it is also likely that production of the Tiguan and an upcoming crossover (teased by the recent CrossBlue Concept at the Detroit Auto Show) would also take place somewhere in North America. While there is no indication where the Tiguan’s North American production would take place, the new three-row crossover could be produced at VW‘s Chattanooga, TN plant, which currently builds the Passat.

Scroll down for the official press release.

Video: Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell revisit bitter F1 rivalry in… Ford Fusion campaign?

By Jonathon Ramsey

Fusion Grand Prix video screencap

Formula One World Champions Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell haven’t been on good terms since the 1986 season, when Piquet joined Mansell at the Williams team and Piquet spent the year privately fuming about not being granted the status of number one driver. Things only got worse from there – even though Piquet won the title the following year with Williams, still partnered with Mansell, the fuming was a lot less private.

They’re back together after a 25-year silence, in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil to drive the new Ford Fusion. Called “Fusion Grand Prix,” both men get the new Ford sedan, prepped to their liking – but still street legal, we assume – for a race to decide… well, who is faster behind the wheel of a Fusion.

There will be four episodes, with the first two having already aired. The third episode comes on January 29 and the race happens February 5. You’ll find two video episodes and a press release below, but note – because it’s a campaign for Ford Brazil, Piquet’s dialogue in the vids isn’t translated, so hit the Closed Captioning button to hear his side of the smack talking.

Report: Hyundai plant one of 100 factories shutting down in wake of Beijing pollution scare

By Zach Bowman

Smog in Beijing

Many factories and chemical plants have suspended production in Beijing in an attempt to curb dangerous pollution, according to the South China Morning Post. The air pollution is some of the worst the city has seen in years, with harmful PM2.5 particle rates hovering between 200 and 400 micrograms per cubic meter. That number is down from as high as 886 on Sunday. For contrast, the US Environmental Protection Agency regulations say PM2.5 concentration at any location be no higher than 65 micrograms per cubic meter, with average maximums not to exceed 15 micrograms per cubic meter.

China blames the pollution on vehicle emissions, industrial production and an increase in domestic coal use to heat homes during cold weather. A total of 48 work sites, including construction zones, metal refineries and chemical plants have suspended production, and 41 factories have cut back production as well. That includes Hyundai Motor Beijing, which suspended production on Sunday.

Even so, the area’s children’s hospitals are receiving up to 10,000 patients per day with respiratory ailments. The city’s government says it is in the midst of an eight-year plan to curb pollution and that levels have dropped between 30 and 70 percent over the past 14 years thanks to its actions.

Official production of the 2013 SRT Viper kicked off this month with VIN #001 rolling off the Conner Avenue Assembly plant to a small celebration that included the car’s owner and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne. Now, The New York Times has released a video and some great pictures showing just what it takes to get the newest Viper from a bare frame and engine to the final product.

The fast-motion video shows various stations along the Viper’s production line ranging from engine inspection and assembly to a dyno test of the body-less car (shown above). The video of the birth of these early Vipers is posted below, but be sure to visit the NYT site for a handful of images of the car, the plant and its workers.

Report: Toyota exec sees future where all cars sold in US are built here

By Jeffrey N. Ross

A growing number of foreign automakers have been shifting more vehicle production to the US – including recent announcement by Nissan and Honda – but Toyota could be on the verge of taking an unprecedented step by producing all of the cars it sells in the US right here in North America. According to the Detroit Free Press, Bill Fay, VP and GM of Toyota US, hinted at such a possibility, but the wording in the report makes it sound like this is far from a done deal and would not apply to Scion or Lexus models.

Currently, the automaker already builds 70 percent of its US-sold cars in North America including some of its more popular models like the Camry, Corolla, Highlander, Tacoma and RAV4. While most of the Japanese-made Toyotas that are sold in the US are slower-selling models (like Land Cruiser, FJ Cruiser and Yaris), the Prius lineup is the glaring exception, and last we heard, Toyota still has plans to ship Prius production to the US by 2015. This is all a part of Toyota’s plan to add 3,500 jobs in North America to go with recent investments totaling $1.6 billion.

Official: Mazda and Fiat finalize deal for Alfa roadster, next-gen MX-5 Miata

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Mazda and Alfa Romeo logos

Although a little bit later than expected, Mazda and Fiat have signed a final agreement that will bring a next-generation MX-5 Miata to the Japanese automaker and a new roadster to Alfa Romeo. When the proposed arrangement was announced back in May, the two automakers had hoped to seal the deal last year, but it doesn’t appear that the production timeline for these cars has slipped any, with both expected to start rolling off assembly lines in 2015.

Other than a shared chassis with a rear-wheel-drive layout, it sounds like the two cars are still planned to be distinct in their own ways from their styling right down to their engines. Mazda will produce both cars at a plant in Hiroshima, Japan, but it isn’t clear what role each automaker will play in the cars’ developmental process. The big question, of course, is what clever portmanteau name we can come up with, like Toyobaru. Mazda Romeo is the easy choice, but Alfazda might roll off the tongue a little better.

Scroll down for a brief press release from both automakers.

Report: Saab 9-3 production to start in China in 2013

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

Saab 9-3 ePower factory

We knew that National Electric Vehicle Sweden planned to restart production of the last-gen Saab 9-3 at some point in the future, we just didn’t know exactly when, or exactly where. As it turns out, the answers to those questions are soon, and China.

Though NEVS had initially said it will build vehicles in Sweden before shipping them to China, the latest report from Autocar suggests that the cars will instead be built right in Quingdao starting later in 2013. That’s right, this calendar year. Also on the docket is a followup electric version of the 9-3, which is slated to come to market in 2014 in an effort to satiate China‘s wish that there be half a million EVs silently filling its streets within the next two years.

NEVS wants to be part of the EV solution, but it’s not going to be easy. Naturally, if these cars are to be built in China, a factory has to be located or built, tooling needs to be in place, workers need to be hired and trained and a lengthy trail of paperwork has to be signed off by the government before even the well-known gasoline-powered 9-3 can be a reality, let along the unknown quantity that is the 9-3 ePower.

In other words… MÃ¥ kraften vara med dig, NEVS.

Report: El Camino revival hopes scuttled by Aussie dollar?

By Jeremy Korzeniewski

Holden Ute

Could Chevrolet sell a reborn El Camino in the United States? Let’s ask an expert, General Motors International Operations boss Tim Lee, what he thinks. Speaking to the Aussies at CarPoint.com.au, Lee had this to say: “I think here in the US that vehicle has a tremendous amount of cache so if we could [import it] we would if it makes sense.”

Great! So, we’ll be getting a pickup car within the year, right? Well, not so much. Lee continues, “You tell me about what the Aussie dollar is going to do over the next 12 to 24 months and I’ll tell you the export potential of cars like that.” Obviously, nobody can say with certainty what the exchange rate between the US and Australia will be in two years, but as of right now, the Aussie dollar is worth a nickel more than a US dollar.

To quote Mr. Lee once again, “You can’t make a business case of something like that.” Indeed you cannot.

But what about the Chevrolet Caprice PPV, isn’t that built in Australia? Indeed it is, and the upcoming Chevy SS performance sedan will be important from Oz as well. Thing is, Mr. Lee says the SS “will have to take a very premium price position” in order to be sold in the States, and that’s apparently not in the cards for an El Camino.

Also not an option: Building the Australian Zeta-chassis machines in the US. Being that we’ve quoted Lee so many times already, here’s one more to close out the discussion: “We will not be investing one penny to implement the Zeta architecture in the United States. I am the chief manufacturing officer of the company – that is written in stone.”

Report: Bugatti transmission order means Veyron may last well into 2014

By Zach Bowman

Bugatti Veyron Shift Lever

Bugatti has reportedly extended its order for the unique seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox in the Veyron through 2014. Originally, the automaker had only maintained a contract for the transmissions through the end of 2013. Rumors have been swirling around the possibility of a new iteration of the Veyron in the works capable of dropping a 1.8-second 0-60 time. It’s entirely possible the new transmission order could be used in that contraption, though Bugatti isn’t saying one way or the other.

The transmission is used only in the Veyron and has been engineered to withstand a full 1,200 horsepower by Ricardo. With shift times of less than 150 milliseconds and both automatic and manual modes, there’s no other transmission like it in the world. Of course, they don’t come cheap. Toast one of these and Bugatti will kindly ask for $120,000 for a replacement, not including installation.

Official: Nissan moving next-gen Murano production from Japan to Mississippi

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Celebrating 10 years of operation at its Canton, Mississippi assembly plant, Nissan has announced that it will be adding a seventh vehicle to the plant’s portfolio. Starting in 2014, production of the next-generation Murano will move from Japan to Mississippi alongside its platform mate, the Altima, which is a part of Nissan’s plan to build 85 percent of its US products domestically.

In addition to the Altima, the Canton facility also produces the Armada, Xterra, Titan, Frontier and NV vans, and back in June, production of the Nissan Sentra production was moved to Canton creating an extra 1,000 jobs. At this point, there is no indication about how many jobs the Murano line will add, if any.

This is the second announcement this week of production being added in the US as Honda said that the Accord Hybrid production would move to Marysville, Ohio where the standard Accord sedan is currently built.

The new Murano will be inspired by the Resonance Concept, which was teased in the image above earlier this week and will debut next week at the Detroit Auto Show.

Scroll down for Nissan’s official statement on the Murano’s production.

Official: Ford hiring 2,200 salaried US workers this year

By Jeffrey N. Ross

With its influx of popular new products made in the US, Ford Motor Company has announced that it intends to hire 2,200 new salaried workers domestically this year. This is the biggest increase of salaried workers for Ford in the last 10 years, and it is all a part of Ford’s contract commitment to the United Auto Workers union to bring 12,000 new jobs to the US by 2015.

There were no specifics as to where in the US these job openings will be, but Ford did reiterate that it will be spending $773 million on equipment upgrades and capacity expansion at six plants located in southeast Michigan; as a whole, Ford is investing a total of $6.2 billion to its US assembly plants over the next couple years. According to recently appointed president of the Americas Joe Hinrichs, the new jobs will be focused on areas such as engineering, manufacturing and computer software. Ford will post its job openings online at careers.ford.com, and it will also use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to recruit new workers, including military veterans.

Scroll down for more about Ford’s planned job growth as well as how to go about applying for said openings.

2014 Honda Accord PHEV

Honda has announced that it will invest $23 million in its Marysville, Ohio facility to support production of the upcoming 2014 Accord Hybrid sedan. According to the manufacturer, this means approximately 50 new jobs will be created, and the whole investment will result in a 95,000-square-foot expansion of the Marysville plant.

The Accord Hybrid joins the decidedly homely Accord PHEV (pictured) this fall, using a 2.0-liter i-VTEC Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine mated to a 124-kilowatt electric motor. Honda has yet to release official power or fuel economy figures for the non-plug-in hybrid version of the Accord.

Honda currently operates four manufacturing facilities in Ohio, with the combined capacity to build up to 700,000 cars and light trucks each year. The Japanese automaker also has a facility in Greensburg, Indiana, where the Civic Hybrid and Acura ILX Hybrid are built.

Connor Assembly reopens, first production SRT Viper goes down the line

By Michael Harley

Celebrations at Chrysler today, as the company posted the image above on its Facebook page showing a 2013 SRT Viper, VIN #001, rolling out of its Conner Assembly Plant in Detroit. New owner Scott Thomas (pictured with his family standing next to Sergio Marchionne) is understandably pleased.

As you may recall, the 400,000 square-foot Conner facility closed in the summer of 2010 with no immediate plans for it to reopen. However, things changed the following year when the automaker chose to open the plant for the next-gen Viper and implement Fiat’s World Class Manufacturing (WCM) production system. (WCM is a methodology that makes employee safety the number one priority, focusing on eliminating waste, increasing productivity, improving quality and restoring dignity to the employees, says Chrysler.)

Completely modernized, the state-of-the-art facility is now tasked with producing the all-new SRT Viper. The sport car’s frames arrive from an outside supplier in Kentucky, before spending upwards of six days inside Conner for assembly and finishing before they are ready for delivery. The plant is expected to produce about twelve Vipers each day. Read more of the details in the press release below.

National Electric Vehicle Sweden has officially signed a deal with Qingdao Qingbo Investment Company that will see the NEVS build EVs in Qingdao, China. The move is the first step on the road toward eventually selling vehicles in China. Reuters reports that the Chinese company has agreed to invest $307.33 million, after which point Qingdao Qingbo will receive 22 percent of the NEVS shares. Currently, there’s no word on exactly when the funds and shares will change hands, but the Swedish automaker has previously said it fully intends to launch its first EV by early 2014.

NEVS has also made waves about potentially building a version of the old Saab 9-3 with a traditional internal combustion driveline. Currently, the manufacturer says it plans to ship the vehicles it builds in Sweden to the Qingdao port and distribute them to the rest of China from there. Later down the line, a manufacturing facility in Qingdao will supply the country with Chinese-built Saab models.

Official: Mazda's new Mexican plant capacity rises to 230,000

By Jonathon Ramsey

After the turmoil of last year, 2013 is getting off to a much better start for Mazda. The company has issued a release indicating that the forthcoming plant in Salamanca, Mexico has had its production capacity raised even though it isn’t scheduled to go online until March 2014. The original plans called for a 140,000-unit capacity, 90,000 of that allotted for the Mazda2 and Mazda3, the remaining 50,000 for a small car Mazda would build for Toyota that would be based on the Mazda2. The new plans call for raising that by 90,000 units to a total of 230,000 units within two years, by the end of March 2016, and it looks like it will all go toward Mazda production to satisfy growing demand for Skyactiv vehciles. The Mexican plant’s opening will be the return of Mazda manufacturing to North America, after Mazda6 production was moved back to Japan last year.

More good news for the company is that it projects 10 billion yen ($114 million) in net income for the financial year that will end in March. That would be a welcome turnaround from the 100-billion-yen loss in the previous financial year, part of a series of three annual losses in a four-year span.

You’ll find the press release with the factory update below.

Rolls-Royce Phantom celebrates decade of decadence

Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe - dead-on view

Ten years ago, Rolls-Royce opened its Goodwood manufacturing facility and handed over the keys to the very first Phantom. Back then, parent company BMW was cranking out Phantom sedans at the blistering pace of one unit per day. By the end of 2003, that number had tripled, and today, the Goodwood plant builds a total of 20 Phantoms in sedan, coupe, drophead and extended-wheelbase models during a single day’s working hours. Originally, there were fewer than 400 workers on staff responsible for hand-building the big cruisers, but now the plant boasts over 1,400 craftsmen, with 100 of those positions added in 2012 alone.

Rolls-Royce boasts one of the lowest staff turnover rates of any brand in the industry, thanks in part to a successful apprenticeship and internship program, and the company notes 80 percent of its workers live within 15 miles of the facility. You can read the full press release on the 10th anniversary of both the Phantom and the Goodwood plant below.
