The Show Must Go On: Betsey Johnson Will Present at NYFW After All

By Christina Perez

After last week’s announcement that Betsey Johnson would not be presenting at New York Fashion Week this season, fans of the cartwheeling, tutu-wearing, glitter-loving designer were left seriously disappointed. But never fear, Betsey-philes: Johnson’s changed her mind. “I just could not stay away from Fashion Week,” she said in a press release. “I wanted to do this for myself and for all of my fans to show that I still got it and I am not going anywhere!”

Thank goodness. Even though the 70-year-old is currently filming a reality show and promised she’d “be cartwheeling through Lincoln Center” whether she held a fashion show or not, New York Fashion Week just wouldn’t be the same without her infamous runway antics.

The Betsey Johnson Fall 2013 show will take place at Lincoln Center on Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m.

This Week's Best Dressed: Couture Edition

By Christina Perez

They’re not your average Fashion Week crowd. Those who attend the twice-yearly Couture shows in Paris give added meaning to the idea of haute, and the guests at this week’s shows were absolutely no exception.

From Daphne Guinness in her signature bespoke finery to Elena Perminova in a showstopping array of bold florals – not to mention the polished ensembles of visiting Hollywood stars Jessica Alba, Diane Kruger, and Chloë Moretz – there was so much finery on display that the snowy gardens of the Tuileries and imposing steps of the Grand Palais were like mini fashion shows all on their own.

Click through for a recap of all the very best looks from the week in Paris, and, since no best-dressed list would be complete without a little insight into Hollywood’s elite, there’s also a healthy helping of the chicest looks from Sundance and more. It’s all right here, in the slideshow.

Rachel Zoe's TV Show Addresses Rumored Business Woes

By Justin Fenner

A trailer for the new season of The Rachel Zoe Project, which premieres on March 6, sheds some light on rumors that its star’s clothing line had lower-than-expected sales last year.

After following Zoe to Fashion Week in New York and Paris, camera crews capture Zoe getting bad news about the health of her label’s sales.

“A lot of the pieces that go down the runway don’t do well on a retail floor,” says one of Zoe’s associates about halfway through the teaser. Later, the stylist’s husband and business partner, Rodger Berman, says, “I just want it to be commercially viable, that’s all. . . . The legitimacy of our company is really at stake.”

In August, Page Six reported that consumer interest in Zoe’s line had “peaked” and that her show might not return to Bravo. But shortly after the network confirmed a fifth season of The Rachel Zoe Project, Zoe dismissed any speculation that her line was underperforming. “My business is up significantly. Just launched jewelry, things are going well,” she said at the FABB conference in New York. “None of those points from the NY Post article were true, and it got picked up by everyone. Our retailers didn’t even blink, though, because they know the truth.”

Perhaps that confident statement means whatever caused concerns about Zoe’s business was resolved. A look at the trailer, below.

What Does H&M's Paris Fashion Week Show Mean For the Industry?

By Justin Fenner

While Peter Som and Cacharel are skipping Fashion Week for one reason or another, H&M plans to return to the runway with a show at Paris’s Rodin Museum this February.

The Swedish retailer is following in some big footsteps: Versace, this will be the first time the brand’s main collection has appeared on the runway in eight years.

But other mass-market retailers have come to the runway in recent years too: Topshop Unique has been on the London Fashion Week calendar since 2005 and sponsors the venue where debut in Spring 2012 was one of the most talked-about of that season. Now it’s one of the most anticipated – and well-attended – presentations on the New York calendar.

But what does it mean when mass-market labels are staging the kinds of shows once reserved for brands that deal in four-figure price points? It could be a simple matter of cost. In 2009, Forbes reported that the price of a runway show “can easily hit $75,000,” and last September The Independent found that designers were “often running up bills in the hundreds of thousands” during Fashion Week. It may simply be easier for a big company like H&M to foot the bill than it is for smaller operations like Chris Benz and Betsey Johnson – both of whom have canceled their shows in New York next month.

“We felt excited about the collection, and we really wanted to show it,” H&M spokesman Hacan Andersson told WWD. If H&M is proud enough of its own wares to put them up against the likes of Chanel and Sonia Rykiel, then that excitement makes sense. Will other brands like H&M be emboldened to do the same?

On the Street and in the Front Row: The Best Snaps From the Men's Shows

By Christina Perez

It’s always Fashion Week somewhere, right? With Pitti Uomo just finishing in Florence, the men’s collections recently wrapping in London, and the men’s ready-to-wear lines now walking Milan, that new adage has certainly felt truer than over the last few weeks. Thankfully, those recent reasons for hustle have not disappointed – especially in the street-style department. So far in Milan alone there have been glimpses of Tamu McPherson working her magic in vivid hues, Anna Dello Russo giving “borrowed from the boys” a new spin in smart little suits, and Candela Novembre showing her support for the Kaiser in a black-and-white Karl Lagerfeld baseball jacket.

See all those, plus the best front-row and street snaps from Pitti and London, right here in the slideshow.

Break Time: Chris Benz Is Skipping Fashion Week, and He's Not the Only One

By Justin Fenner

Chris Benz says he won’t show a collection at New York Fashion Week next month, and will use the extra time to focus on the development of his brand.

“We have received great feedback from the marketplace after just one season,” the designer told WWD. “I want ample time to implement all that we have learned.”

Benz introduced a contemporary jeans label, called CB Denim, at his Spring 2013 presentation in September. In November, he told The New York Times that he planned to bring his brand and its price point from the designer arena into the “upper contemporary” market. “We were working so hard but not reaching as many fans as we’d like,” he said.

But Benz isn’t the only designer skipping the Fall 2013 shows: Cacharel announced just last week that it will forgo its show during Paris Fashion Week. There’s also been some speculation that Holmes & Yang, the line designed by actor Katie Holmes and Jeanne Yang, won’t show in New York because it’s not listed on the official Fashion Week schedule
