Frankfurt: Editors’ Choice: Top Five 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show Debuts

2013 Frankfurt Auto Show

Filed under:

By our story count, this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show was one of the busiest auto shows on record. We brought you more than 70 reveals from the center of the action, and are still finding and compiling a lot of other content with Frankfurt-origins as well.

With such a massive amount of raw data to choose from, picking just five debuts to highlight in our regular Editors’ Choice feature was no small job. As usual, Autoblog staffers were tasked only with awarding points to the cars and concepts that spoke to us the most – our favorite things to look at, read about and write about from the show. Said another way, these are not necessarily the most important or impressive debuts from the Messe; the winners reflect our personal favorites.

As you’ll read below, there were a lot more concept cars than production vehicles that knocked our socks off this time than in years past. Arguably the most impressive production debut – Porsche’s 918 Spyder – came close to the top five but was held back a little by being overly familiar (the danger of a super-long rollout plan). But really, this crop of conceptual metal was just superbly executed. Read our list below and then tell us where we went wrong and right, in Comments.

Report: Jaguar readying SUV for Frankfurt debut

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

In an effort to target higher-volume vehicle segments, Jaguar is getting ready to introduce its first-ever crossover, and Autoweek reports that we could see it debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. We’ve heard in the past that the new Jaguar crossover could carry the name XQ, but the report also mentions that the Q-type name is still in the running (now wouldn’t Audi just love that?).

A little more clear than the crossover’s name, AW says the cargo-friendly Jaguar should ride on the same platform as the upcoming Jaguar XS compact sedan rather than using a Land Rover platform. As for the on-sale date, it still sounds like the XS will hit the roads first in 2015 with the crossover model due out in 2016.

Official: Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Squadra Corse brings one-make series to the road

By Damon Lowney

Filed under:

Lamborghini announced a new Gallardo model today, the all-wheel-drive LP 570-4 Squadra Corse, and it’s almost identical to the LP 570-4 Super Trofeo single-series race car. Its world premiere will be held at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

The street-legal Squadra Corse shares key components with the Super Trofeo – both of which are based on the Gallardo Superleggera – including the 570-horsepower V10, carbon fiber rear wing and removable engine hood made in the same material. The rear wing produces up to three times more downforce than what’s found on the LP 560-4. Through the generous use of weight-saving materials and components, the Squadra Corse weighs in at 2,954 pounds, which is 154 pounds lighter than the LP 560-4. To stop all of that mass, standard production carbon-ceramic brakes are used.

Carbon fiber bucket seats with Alcantara center inserts replace the regular seats, though buyers can option them back in. Alcantara also covers the underside of the dashboard. The door panels, center console cover, handbrake frame and lower section of the steering wheel are all made in carbon fiber.

Courtesy of the weight savings, the Squadra Corse has impressive performance. Hitting 60 miles per hour takes just 3.4 seconds, but even more impressive is its run to 124 mph in 10.4 seconds. The racecar for the street tops out at a slightly hilarious 199 mph.

The Squadra Corse was named after a new department at Lamborghini Automobili, which handles all motorsports activities, such as the Super Trofeo one-make race series. Check out the press release below for more juicy details.

Official: Suzuki bringing compact iV-4 to Frankfurt

By Damon Lowney

Suzuki will debut the iV-4 at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Filed under:

Even though American Suzuki Motor Corporation filed for bankruptcy last year and stopped selling cars in the US and Canada as part of its reorganization, there are still plenty of countries around the world where Suzuki continues to sell autos. For those markets, the automaker is working on a compact sport-utility vehicle, called the iV-4, which will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Suzuki says the iV-4 “embodies the basic ruggedness of an SUV,” and that its styling is modern and innovative. We’ll have to take Suzuki’s word on that one, though the teaser above certainly looks the part, with the grille reminding us of the one found on the Jeep Grand Cherokee (minus a few slats, of course).

Scroll down for the short-and-sweet press release, and expect the full brace of information to be revealed in September.

Report: Mercedes S65 AMG to bow in LA, S600 in Detroit

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Between the launch of the 2014 Mercedes S-Class, the debut of the S63 AMG (shown above) and reports about a new “super S-Class,” the Mercedes-Benz flagship sedan has been in the news a lot lately. According to Car and Driver, Mercedes plans to introduce three new flavors of the latest S-Class at the Frankfurt, LA and Detroit auto shows.

We already heard that the plug-in hybrid version will be introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but this new report says that the V12-powered S65 AMG and S600 models will soon follow. At the LA Auto Show in November, the S65 AMG will hit the stage with a twin-turbo V12 expected to produce more than the current model’s 621 horsepower. This should make for one quick S-Class, no doubt able to shave a few ticks off the 2014 S63 AMG’s 0-60 time of 3.9 seconds.

Following the S65’s debut, Mercedes will reportedly take the wraps off its S600, which will use a less-powerful version of the mighty V12. The 2013 model year S600 produces 510 hp from its 5.5-liter twin-turbo V12, which is enough to propel the sedan to 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds. The updated version should only improve those figures. Stay tuned.

Confirmed: Spyker B6 Venator Spyder concept to soak in the sun at Pebble Beach

By Damon Lowney

Filed under:

Spyker promised to unveil a convertible version of the B6 Venator this year, and, while we thought it would make its first appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, it’ll actually be showing up a bit earlier, at Pebble Beach next month, a source close to Spyker told Autoblog.

The mid-engine B6 Venator Spyder will be powered by the same 375-horsepower V6 as the coupe, which should be enough for quick, if not whip-snap, acceleration due to the car’s low weight. The coupe is expected to weigh in at around 3,100 pounds, so expect the convertible to weigh a bit more, accounting for the folding top mechanism and additional chassis bracing. But Spykers have always been about cruising in style, and the topless B6 should have it in spades.

If we had bet our bottom dollar on the Spyder’s unveiling, we’d be broke, but we didn’t, so look for more coverage on the newest Spyker in just a few weeks.

Spy Shots: McLaren MP4-12C gets a nip, tuck and 'Ring run

Facelifted McLaren MP4-12C caught camouflaged on the 'Ring - spy shot

Filed under:

It look like this McLaren MP4-12C is recovering from a touch of plastic surgery, and our spy shooters who caught it at the Nürburgring say that a minor headlight and bumper facelift is on the way. Juicier things could be happening in the rear, though, with the suggestion that horsepower from the 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V8 will rise from 616 horsepower to somewhere around 650 hp.

The fact that the changes are modest suggest we could see the facelifted model as soon as the Frankfurt Motor Show in about six weeks.

BMW shows off 435i Coupe with M Performance parts

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 BMW 435i Coupe with M Performance parts

Filed under:

Greetings from the famous Circuito do Estoril racetrack in Portugal. We’re here to put the 2014 BMW 4 Series coupe through its paces, and we’ll have the chance to sample the updated 2014 BMW M5 with its new Competition Pack, as well. But before going out for some hot laps, we took a few minutes to check out this 435i Coupe that’s been fitted with a full suite of goodies from the BMW M Performance parts catalog.

Starting with the exterior, carbon fiber bits are the most noticeable additions, with the lightweight material added in the form of a massive front splitter, mirror caps and a rear spoiler. Other visual changes include lightweight 20-inch wheels, a blacked-out grille, and unique M Performance side stripes. No, that’s not a shadow you see under the 435i’s strong side character line – that’s a stripe. Yes, we’re serious.

Inside (we couldn’t get photos of the interior, sorry!), BMW has added its sport steering wheel with race display, unique M floormats, steel pedals, and a whole mess of carbon fiber and Alcantara trim.

But the M catalog isn’t just about added flair. Legitimate performance parts can be had, and for starters, this 435i is fitted with a power kit that increases engine output from 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque to 334 and 332, respectively. Building upon that, there’s a limited-slip differential, performance suspension, upgraded brakes with red calipers and a rear apron diffuser finished in carbon.

BMW hasn’t announced official pricing for the 4 Series goodies as of this writing, but we should have a clearer idea of how much coin each option will warrant closer to the kit’s debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. Until then, have a glance through our gallery of live photos to take it all in for yourself.

Rumormill: Ferrari 458 Scuderia to be unveiled in Frankfurt?

By Jonathon Ramsey

Filed under:

We’re heavy on the speculative side with this, but Auto Express is saying that “Rumours of Ferrari 458 Scuderia emerge, with possible debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.” To be clear, that’s the possible debut of a car that is still only a rumor, and we’re not sure it will be called “Scuderia,” either – remember, the track-day 360 was the Challenge Stradale. Admittedly, the rumor of its existence is strong and there is plenty of precedent: Ferrari has introduced some model or variant of its mid-engined V8 sports car at the last three Frankfurt Motor Shows.

Car and Driver went into a great deal of indepth speculation about the coming, track-focused 458 in a piece back in May, and also predicted it would be shown first in Frankfurt. According to C/D we can expect “roughly 600” horsepower and 9,300-rpm redline – up 300 rpm from standard – a faster shifting seven-speed gearbox, a dry weight under 2,900 pounds thanks to “exotic compound materials” and a “slightly stripped interior,” less exhaust silencing, uprated carbon-ceramic brakes and active aerodynamics on the rear diffuser.

As far as rumors go this one sounds thoroughly lovely. We hope to see it in made metal in Frankfurt in two months, you can enjoy a detailed gallery of the 563-horsepower Ferrari 458 Challenge above for now.

Spy Shots: 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet spotted testing in the nude

By Steven J. Ewing

Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet spy shots

Filed under:

The Porsche 911 wouldn’t be the Porsche 911 unless there were twenty-something different models to choose from (note: we are not complaining), and the latest one was just spied by our trusty photographers out on Germany’s Nürburgring. Feast your eyes on the 911 Turbo Cabriolet – the droptop version of the new Turbo wonder that debuted in May – looking all sorts of stealth in its black-on-black-on-black prototype scheme.

Mechanically, the 911 Turbo Cab should be identical to the fixed-roof version, meaning a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six engine will live in the car’s rump, putting out something like 520 horsepower. Of course, there’s also the hotter Turbo S version of the coupe, and we expect that to get the droptop treatment, as well, with 560 horsepower on tap. The added weight of the folding top and additional structural supports will likely make for slightly slower 0-60 times for both cars, though considering the base Turbo will hit 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds, “slower” is a very relative term indeed. All that force will run to the ground via all-wheel drive, managed by Porsche’s seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission.

The wide stance of the 911 Turbo Coupe carries over to the Cabriolet, no doubt fitted with the same (standard) 20-inch wheels. Inside, the usual luxury amenities will be on hand, along with nearly endless customization options.

Given that the Frankfurt Motor Show isn’t too far off in the future, we expect to see the Turbo Cabriolet officially bow before then. For now, check it out in the high-res spy shot gallery above.

Spy Shots: Range-topping 800-hp Lamborghini Aventador SV hits the 'Ring

By Steven J. Ewing

Lamborghini Aventador SV spy shots

Filed under:

A couple of years ago, rumors were circulating about a possible high(er)-performance version of the Lamborghini Aventador, and our spy photographers have just captured what appears to be a prototype of this new supercar testing at the Nürburgring. Supposedly called the Aventador SV (for Super Veloce), this even-more-hardcore version of Lamborghini’s range-topper could boast as much as 800 horsepower. Yowza.

As for the car you see here, our spies point out new center-lock wheels wrapped in ultra-thin high-performance tires that hide revised brake calipers mounted in a different position than on the normal Aventador. Up front, there’s a new aerodynamic piece that makes for an even lower air splitter, and around back, an extra piece of trim (often referred to as a Gurney flap) has been added to the spoiler to provide enhanced downforce.

We don’t imagine there’s much in the way of weight to shed from the Aventador’s carbon fiber monocoque chassis, so this SV version will likely focus more on better suspension tuning, improved aero and a 80-100 more horsepower to set it apart from the rest of the range. Expect more details to arrive around the time of the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall.

Breaking: Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept crossover leaked ahead of Shanghai debut

By John Neff

Filed under:

With just a few days left before the start of the Shanghai Motor Show, images of the Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept compact crossover have emerged online. The little ‘ute is based on the small A-Class hatchback, and though it shares an identical wheelbase, is larger in every other dimension.

Looking like a rough-and-tumble five-door hatchback on the tippy toes of its 20-inch wheels, the GLA is most certainly destined for production in a toned down form that will borrow many bits and pieces from other cars based on this platform like the aforementioned A-Class and the CLA-Class sedan. Carscoop reports that the production version of the GLA will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September of this year, with sales to the public starting in 2014.

Since it’s based on the A-Class, we expect that the production GLA-Class will be powered by your choice of Mercedes’ 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine and a diesel or two, and will offer transmissions that include the company’s seven-speed DCT and perhaps a six-speed manual (at least in Europe). If the GLA follows the same path as the two cars before it, expect a GLA45 AMG producing over 300 horsepower, as well. As for what powers the GLA Concept, that just might remain a mystery until the vehicle is officially revealed in China.

Stay tuned to Autoblog this Friday night and Saturday for our live coverage of the Shanghai Motor Show.

Spy Shots: Honda Civic Tourer caught testing ahead of 2014 launch

By Steven J. Ewing

Filed under:

Honda showed off its Civic Tourer concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and at that time, we were told that a production version would be coming to market in the very near future. Obviously, the sleek lines of the concept car will be dumbed down slightly for consumers, but that doesn’t mean the Civic wagon will be a bland machine. The Euro-spec Civic’s angular front end looks like it will blend nicely with the rakish rump that we saw on the concept.

Our sources suggest that not only will the Civic Tourer be a class-leader in terms of cargo capacity, but it will likely be a pretty engaging car from behind the wheel, as well. Honda is hoping that the Tourer will account for roughly 20 percent of all European Civic sales after it goes on sale.

Expect to see the production car debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September, with the first customers taking delivery in early 2014. In the meantime, have a look at the camouflaged swoopy wagon from all angles in our gallery above.

Spy Shots: Next-gen Mini interior ditching familiar center speedo

By Jonathon Ramsey

A Reddit user has posted images of the 2015 F56 Mini Cooper, one each of the exterior and interior. As has been the case since the launch of the new Mini in 2001, the overall exterior shape underneath camouflage screams Mini, but insiders are still calling the coming F56 model “the most aggressively different new Mini yet.” Inside, though, the two-door that defined premium hatchbacks has, according to its most devoted buyers, gone mainstream.

The giant ring atop the center console is there, but there’s no longer a speedometer inside of it. Instead, in an integration that brings to mind words like “shoehorned,” Mini designers have placed radio and telephone controls inside the bezel. According to the Mini experts at MotoringFile, the picture above is the base trim and one of four possible treatments – in the upper trims a larger screen for navigation takes up most of the space. The bezel itself is marked with mood lighting that supposedly “swirls around” when you start the car with the red toggle switch.

The speedo rests atop the steering column with a tachometer placed to its left. The BMW wheel pictured is just for the prototype – you can expect a familiar three-spoke Mini wheel when the car is revealed, and latest rumor is that the event will take place at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Spy Shots: Next Mercedes-Benz C-Class spotted in the snow

By Steven J. Ewing

2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan spy shots

Filed under:

The entry-level Mercedes-Benz C-Class has long felt like nothing more than, well, just that. Aside from the potent and delicious C63 AMG models, there hasn’t been much to set the C-Class apart in the entry-level luxury/sport segment, leading to the model being regarded by many as “The Cheap Mercedes.” No, it’s certainly not a bad car, but for our money, it hasn’t stood up particularly well to competitors like the BMW 3 Series or Audi A4.

So with the handsome new CLA-Class coming to round off the entry-level end for Mercedes-Benz, big plans are in store for the C-Class. We can see some evidence of that in this latest set of spy shots from our friends at CarPix. According to earlier reports, the new C-Class will be “far more dramatic” in the visuals department, and while the sedan’s sculpting is still covered by camo, the much sleeker headlamp design we see here is, at the very least, a good start. The car’s overall size is expected to grow a bit to further distance itself from the CLA, though thanks to lightweight materials, curb weight isn’t expected to increase.

Just like the current model, the new C-Class is expected to use four- and six-cylinder engines, both gas- and diesel-fed, and overall power output for the global engine range should span from 120-ish on the low end to as much as 330. These new engines are expected to be mounted lower and farther rearward than before, offering better balance for both rear- and 4Matic all-wheel drive configurations. And as for that AMG? Rumors suggest a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 will fall underhood.

Expect the next C-Class to debut either later this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, or more likely, at next March’s Geneva Motor Show.

Spy Shots: 2016 BMW 7 Series spied for the first time ever

By Seyth Miersma

2016 BMW 7 Series - spy shot, disguised

Filed under:

Ladies and gentlemen, Bimmerphiles and automotive voyeurs of all stripes: here is your next-generation BMW 7 Series. Captured in photographs for the first time ever while doing a spot of cold-weather testing in Sweden, this newly slim 7er will most likely debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015 and launch in the 2016 model year.

Sources indicate that BMW is targeting a much lighter curb weight for the 7 Series, and will use learnings gained with the i3 and i8 development to add carbon fiber-reinforced plastics in the construction. In return we’d expect the new model – which uses the internal model designation “G11” – to offer improvements in handling, acceleration and fuel economy. As with the current 7 Series lineup, expect the engine range to include turbocharged inline-six engines, one or more V8s and a V12 option.

It’s fair to say that, with the car’s debut still years down the road, that BMW will work to launch with an impressive suite of in-car technology, too. A completely new version of iDrive shouldn’t be ruled out. These shots mark the beginning of a long journey to 2015, and we expect to have loads more information to share in the coming months and years, so stay tuned.

Teased: Ssangyong SIV-1 Geneva teasers suggest brand starting to find design mojo

By Jonathon Ramsey

Ssangyong SIV-1 crossover concept rendering - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

To follow Ssangyong’s recent concept history from the XUV-1 shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2011, to the XIV-2 shown at Geneva last year to the e-XIV concept shown in Paris is to trace the evolution of the firm’s design growth. The SIV-1 concept coming to this year’s Geneva expo caps them all and looks like a leap in confidence for the South Korean brand.

Ssangyong doesn’t have much to say about it right now. SIV translates to “Smart Interface Vehicle,” and we’re told it is a “multi-interface” crossover that has a mobile audio system and four bucket seats. We’ll find out more when we get to Geneva next month, but we like what we see so far. You can visit the press release below for a few more official words.

Report: Next Volkswagen Golf R to get 286 horsepower?

By Steven J. Ewing

2012 Volkswagen Golf R - front three-quarter view

Filed under:

The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn’t launched in the United States just yet, but we’re already setting our sights on the range-topping R model. According to Autocar, the next Golf R will be more powerful than the current version, producing 268 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful production Golf ever.

Powering the new Golf R will be a further evolution of Volkswagen’s well-liked 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, and when mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, the hotter hatch will reportedly be able to sprint to 62 miles per hour in five seconds flat. That’s over half a second quicker than the current US-spec model.

Other updates for the new Golf R include the addition of VW’s Haldex 5 all-wheel-drive system found in the latest iteration of 4Motion. Furthermore, thanks to the use of lightweight materials, the new R is expected to weigh in around 2,650 pounds – that’s a massive 675 pounds less than the current US-spec car. The exhaust has reportedly been reworked to provide more aural delight, as well.

Herein lies the rub, though: It’s unclear whether or not Volkswagen will offer this same power upgrade in the States. After all, the current US-spec Golf R is rated at 256 hp and 243 lb-ft while its Euro counterpart produces 270 hp and 258 lb-ft. What’s more, European versions can be had with the delicious six-speed DSG, whereas US models are only available with the six-speed manual ‘box. Volkswagen’s US arm tells Autoblog that since the car is still so far off, “there is no final decision” on whether our car will be identical to the Euro model.

Autocar reports that the Euro-spec Golf R will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September, with the first cars hitting the streets of Europe in early 2014.

Spy Shots: Range Rover Sport spotted cold-weather testing

Next Land Rover Range Rover Sport undergoing winter testing - front three-quarter view, camouflaged

Filed under:

With the massively redesigned Range Rover out of the way, Land Rover is now working on getting its next-generation Range Rover Sport ready for the public eye. Wearing far less camouflage than the last time we saw this SUV, we’re starting to get a better idea of what the Range Rover‘s brasher relative will look like.

Up front, it looks like the Sport will be getting a more pointed nose than the new Range Rover, and we can also see that the lower fascia has a sportier appearance and LED running lights similar to the smaller Evoque. Our spy shooters also added that this prototype appears to be wider and lower than the current model.

Since this vehicle was caught testing near the Arctic Circle, Land Rover benefited from a bit of extra camouflage courtesy of a thick layer of snow covering the rear, so we still don’t have a good idea about what the back of the new generation will look like. Speaking of the rear end, there is still no confirmation as to whether the Range Rover Sport will be getting a seven-passenger version, so we’ll likely have to wait for more information about this new Land Rover until closer to the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall where we expect it to debut.

Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG spied in Sweden

By Jeffrey N. Ross

We’ve spotted the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLA testing a couple times in recent months in getting closer to production form and shedding camouflage, but now it looks like we’re see our first look at the AMG version of this compact crossover. The low ride height might trick some into thinking that we’re just seeing the already-confirmed A45 AMG out testing, but the unique beltline, rear doors and side windows confirm this is some version of the GLA-Class.

What makes us so confident that this is the AMG model? Well, for starters, this prototype has beefier brakes with cross-drilled front and rear rotors and bigger front calipers, but it also sports dual exhaust outlets poking through the rear fascia and a suspension that has been lowered considerably. Our spy shooters said that this car’s exhaust note made it almost certainly an AMG model.

Just to be clear, the GLA AMG will not be powered by a 4.5-liter engine. The closely related A45 AMG will carry the “45” in its name to celebrate the first 45 years of AMG, and our sources seem to indicate the AMG version of the GLA will do the same. We’re expecting this sporty crossover to produce as much as 350 horsepower from its AMG-tuned four-cylinder engine, and like the all-new E63 AMG, it could very well come standard with 4Matic all-wheel drive.

With the standard GLA-Class not expected to debut until this fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the GLA45 AMG might have to wait until sometime next year to get its official introduction; although, as a note, Mercedes-Benz did reveal all of its E-Class models (including the E63 AMG) at the same this week at the Detroit Auto Show.
