The Cure For The Common Corolla

I hate the Toyota Corolla. I’m not talking about the new 2014 model; I can’t yet judge a car I haven’t driven. I’m referring to the current, old-as-dirt sedan. As an appliance, I get why people buy it, but it represents everything that I, as a car enthusiast, dislike. I don’t like looking at it, I don’t like sitting in it, and I really don’t like driving it. There is absolutely no amount of emotion dialed into any part of the Corolla experience and every other vehicle in the segment is a far better choice. But still, somehow, Toyota sells ’em like hotcakes.

Thankfully, there are a lot of people who agree with me. And for folks like us, companies like Mazda exist. This small Japanese automaker places emotion and driver involvement as its top priorities when creating new products, and mostly – especially in recent years – the end results have been great. The new CX-5 crossover is a doll, to say nothing of the rakish and lovely new Mazda6 that launched earlier this year. And let’s not forget the Miata

It’s a shame, then, that Mazda’s sales numbers have never correlated with how we enthusiasts feel about the products, though a lot of that simply has to do with the company’s weaker advertising efforts, not to mention a less robust dealer network. Mazda continues to build cars that are great to drive above all, and the automaker is slowly but surely getting its refinement issues and infotainment technologies in order. This new 2014 Mazda3 aims to offer the best of the brand’s new Skyactiv powertrain DNA, housed in a package with features and technologies that stand up to every other car in the highly competitive C segment.

It is everything the Corolla is not. And it’s fantastic.

Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Nissan recall 3.4 million vehicles for faulty airbags

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Most vehicle recalls that take place these days are a result of some problem that happens during the manufacturing process by the automaker, but as we see here, parts suppliers can also factor in to problematic safety issues. Automotive News is reporting that a total of 3.4 million vehicles produced by Japanese automakers between 2000 and 2004 are being recalled globally due to faulty airbags produced by an outside supplier, Takata Corp.

According to the report, vehicles from Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda are being recalled because of passenger front airbags that do not inflate properly. Globally, Toyota is said to be recalling around 1.73 million cars including 510,000 in the US composed of Toyota Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia and Tundra as well as the Lexus SC430 for the 2001 through 2003 model years; this is the second time this year the 2003 Corolla and Matrix have been recalled for an airbag problem. Honda is recalling 1.14 million models, Nissan another 480,000 and Mazda 45,463. The article says that Takata supplied faulty airbags to non-Japanese automakers, but it did not specify which ones.

Honda and Toyota have released information on their own websites about the recall, while Nissan and Mazda have not yet commented. Read official press releases from Honda and Toyota, below, and look for updates as we have word from the others.

Rattling Noise underneath Driver's Side

By PineCone

Hi:
Toyota Corolla 2001 with low mileage:

Just recently, there is rattling-noise or sharp noise underneath driver’s side while passenger side has no noise to hear.

The rattling-noise occurs ONLY ‘speed-bump’ or similar uneven pavement.

The rattling-noise does NOT occur when driving smooth surface, however my concern is it going to get bad to the point I might end up stranding in the middle of the road.:(

Any clues on this would be truly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ford Focus Tops the World's Sales Charts

By John Rosevear, The Motley Fool

Filed under:

The 2013 Ford Focus. Photo credit: Ford Motor Company

All of the world’s 2012 new-car sales numbers are finally in and tallied, and it’s official: Ford‘s Focus was the world’s best-selling car last year.

The compact Focus beat out the longtime champ, Toyota‘s Corolla, thanks to strong sales around the world – particularly in China, where the new-generation Focus was launched to wide acclaim last spring.

Strong sales around the world
Every year, the respected auto industry analytics firm R. L. Polk compiles new-car registration data from every single country in the world. This takes a few months (which is why we’re hearing about this in April), but the company’s report is considered definitive.

Polk’s report for 2012 says that the Focus was the world sales champ, with a whopping 1,020,410 units sold. Ford attributed much of the Focus’s gains to big sales increases in both China and the U.S. (The Focus was also among Europe‘s best-selling cars, but Europe‘s economic woes hindered sales totals.)

Sales of the Focus here in the U.S. were up 40% in 2012, as the car was widely praised by reviewers for its solid feel and premium interior features. It has proven to be Ford’s best-ever competitor for the class-leading Corolla and Honda Civic. In fact, the quality of the Focus seemed to catch the two Japanese giants off guard, driving Honda to rush a redo of its Civic to market months ahead of schedule.

Big growth in China, but there’s a catch
But the big story for Focus last year was in China, and I should explain that there’s a bit of controversy here. Ford actually sells two different cars called “Focus” in China: The current global model as sold here in the U.S., called “New Focus” and positioned as a premium product, and the last-generation European-model Focus, called “Classic Focus” and sold at more of an entry-level price.

The New Focus was launched in China last spring and was a hit with China‘s auto critics, for much the same reasons that the car has done so well elsewhere. And it has clearly done well with consumers. But it’s hard to tell exactly how well it has done, because Ford rolls up the sales figures for the New Focus and the Classic Focus into one column labeled “Focus”. (I asked Ford for a breakdown of last year’s sales, but was told that the company doesn’t provide them.)

So when I say that sales of the Focus were up 51% in China last year, it’s likely true that much of that was due to the success of the new model, but I don’t know for sure.

The upshot: 2012 was great for Ford
But either way, there’s no question that the sharp-looking compact has been a huge success around the world for Ford.

And it’s not the only success, as there were two …read more

Report: Ford Focus was best-selling nameplate in 2012

By Jeffrey N. Ross

Filed under:

Last August, Ford made a few waves by claiming that the Ford Focus was, at that point, the top-selling car in the world. The automaker failed to account for variations of the Toyota Corolla wearing a different name (such as the Auris and Matrix), however. With official data from Polk coming in now, Ford is able to say that the Focus was, in fact, the best-selling nameplate in the world last year.

Using new-car registrations (which doesn’t factor in fleet sales), the Polk data shows that a total of more than one million Focus models around the world. Strong sales in the US and China have led to a 16 percent increase in year-over-year Focus sales from 2011 that helped to create even more of a gap between it and the second-best global seller, the Corolla.

Ford also had the Fiesta and F-Series listed in the top 10 for worldwide nameplates, but what’s even more impressive is the fact that the F-Series is only sold in North America. Scroll down to see the list (compiled by Ford using Polk data) of the top global sellers last year and a press release from Ford.

2013 Honda Civic EX-L Sedan Review & Test Drive

By Harvey Schwartz

2013 Honda Civic EXL Beauty Right Up Done Small

‘MORE REFINED INSIDE AND OUT’

When the all-new Honda Civic premiered in 2012 it received mixed reviews about the new exterior styling and interior materials.  The compact sedan market is one of the most hotly contested so Honda designers went back to their drawing boards and refreshed the front and rear fascias, then gave the interior more luxurious finishes plus more standard equipment in 2013 to better compete against the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Elantra, Ford Focus and Chevy Cruze.

Last year I tested the all-new 2012 Civic Si coupe and found it fun-to-drive, with excellent handling capabilities, and didn’t mind that the interior had mostly hard plastic.  When looking for a performance car less than $25,000.00, I don’t care that the company is putting more money on performance-driven items that on the interior dashboard materials.  I want fun and excitement behind the wheel for a reasonable amount of money.  Well, to turn the tide with the other automotive reviewers, Honda refreshed the front and rear fascias and upgraded the interior to give it a more upscale look and feel.  I tested the Civic 4-door EX-L model with navigation and enjoyed my seven-day test drive like last year.

Changes to the exterior include a new open-mouth lower bumper with a horizontal chrome accent and a sportier looking black honeycomb mesh grille with another horizontal chrome piece around the bottom and up the sides.  The grille is flanked by new halogen headlamp clusters and clear-lens corner lights to make a more premium look.   Integrated foglamps are at the sides of the lower bumper.  The more sculpted front end flows into a new more deeply faceted sculpture.  The flared fenders find new 16X6.5 inch sporty aluminum wheels with black painted pockets wrapped with 205/55R16 inch all-season radial tires.

From the side is a long, low, sleek look with steeply raked A-pillars, lower side extensions, body color pull-out door handles, aero-styled remote/heated sideview mirrors and nice scallop in the doors.  The rear features a new bumper design and new rear trunk lid that are finished off by a clean horizontal chrome trim piece.  The all-new design of the jewel-like taillights now carries into the trunk face, providing a more polished and upscale look.  The rear bumper also features integrated reflector treatments and a new diffuser panel with a honeycomb mesh vent.

Interior improvements include new soft-to-the-touch leather dashboard and dashboard top with dual stitching, black matt trim and brushed aluminum trim around the air-vents, around the leather-wrapped steering wheel spokes, center console, and door trim.  Chrome is featured around the stick shifter gate.

The Hyundai Car Brands Wither

By 24/7 Wall St.

3159_1_2

Filed under:

Market penetration and bad PR have taken down Hyundai and stablemate Kia, which until recently were the hottest brands in the U.S. market. As sales of competitors rise, the two manufactures will find it nearly impossible to keep pace. Their reigns as the darlings of the American car industry are over.

Hyundai sales rose only 2.3% to 96,024 in the first two months of this year, compared to an overall industry increase of 8.4%. Kia sales dropped 3.4% to 77,807 in the same period.

By contrast, sales of the industry leaders — General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM), Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) — all rose in the double digits. Chrysler’s sales were up 9.4% for the period.

One reason for the stagnation of Hyundai and Kia sales is likely the scandal over gas mileage claims. Car research firm Edmunds wrote in November:

  • Hyundai and Kia said they overstated the estimated fuel economy on about 900,000 2011-’13 vehicles, including the 2012 Hyundai Accent and 2012 Kia Soul.
  • The Korean companies will compensate owners for the inaccurate claims.
  • The EPA announced that its investigation into “inflated mileage claims” prompted the action by Hyundai and Kia.

Some models that the two companies sell face more competition from low- and mid-priced cars and light trucks. In the first two months of the year, Honda Motor Co. Ltd.’s (NYSE: HMC) Accord sales rose 51%. Ford Fusion sales rose 42%. Sales of the Ford Fusion and Toyota Corolla each rose 22%. All of these vehicles are in the top 20 in terms of U.S. sales. Hyundai has two cars in the group. Sales of one of those — the Sonata — dropped 8% for the period. Sales of its Elantra rose 15%. Hyundai is losing market share to several other companies in the battle among the most popular cars and light trucks.

The U.S. car market is the hottest large car market in the world. If global manufacturers want to take advantage of that, they need to make progress in 2013. Hyundai and Kia have not articulated much of a plan to regain their growth rates. That is because they have none.

Study: China still 10 years away from globally competitive car company

By Zach Bowman

Chinese car plant assembly line

Filed under:

It may be a spell before Chinese automakers are capable of turning out a globally competitive vehicle. That’s the findings of a sprawling 200 page report by Bernstein Research. The group went through the trouble of purchasing two Chinese-made cars, importing them to Europe and disassembling them down to every last nut and bolt. The study also included in-depth interviews with CEOs at each of the major manufacturers, including Great Wall, Chery, Brilliance and SAIC among others. Researchers found that by and large, global partners aren’t holding up their end of joint venture deals, with the vast majority of foreign automakers seemingly not taking the Chinese market seriously.

The one exception to that rule, according to Bernstein, is General Motors and SAIC. GM has pumped a staggering amount of cash into China, and as a result, SAIC seems leagues ahead of its peers on the design and engineering front. Speaking of engineering, the study found most Chinese cars to simply be reverse-engineered examples of foreign models, with the Toyota Corolla being the most popular. That’s due in part to the fact that Chinese automakers spend $100 million a year on research and development on average. For comparison’s sake, a company like Volkswagen or Toyota spends closer to $1 billion. The Truth About Cars has a closer look at the report’s contents. You can find that writeup here.

Review: 2013 Honda Civic

By Chris Paukert

Lather, Rinse, Repeat

On some level, it’s hard to blame Honda for the strategy it took with its new-for-2012 Civic. Executives looked at the key players on the market as the model was being developed, soaked in the growing global economic malaise, and decided that if they wanted to make decent money on their small car, they’d have to find creative ways to take cost out of its build. In light of the financial crisis, consumers and critics would surely understand some belt-tightening in order to secure the company’s legendary reliability, resale value and ease-of-use, right?

So Honda took a pass on expensive new technology – more complex transmissions, forced induction, active aero, and so on. And it also substituted in some cheaper interior materials, skimped on sound deadening, creature comforts and found lots of little ways to save money. Surely in a segment where the frankly ancient and moth-eaten Toyota Corolla has consistently ranked among the sales leaders, nobody would care, eh?

Well, Honda was half right. After an unusually long product cycle with the eighth-generation Civic, loyal customers were all too eager to plunk down their hard-earned cash for a new model, with 2012 sales totaling well over 300,000 units. But the model’s long-term prospects were less certain. That’s because Honda miscalculated the strategies of its rivals, playing things close to the vest when others chose to double-down in the segment.

Between the time the 2012 Civic’s design was locked in and the moment it hit the market, the compact car fray became exponentially more competitive. Ford took the wraps off of its sophisticated and tech-rich Focus. Hyundai rolled out its audaciously styled and value-laden Elantra. Mazda took its already great-driving Mazda3 and elevated its fuel economy with Skyactiv engineering. Even perennial small car backmarker General Motors put forth a high-quality effort with its mature new Cruze. Critics’ reaction was no less swift and stern: Not only was the 2012 Civic a galactic comedown in terms of interior appointments and design, it wasn’t as much fun to drive as its predecessor, nor was it the least bit innovative. For a company that made its nut – and its reputation – on the back of its engineering prowess, all of this was bitterly disappointing.

We’re not sure whether it was enduring the media drubbing (that Consumer Reports fall-from-grace had to sting), looking around at its suddenly fierce competition, fielding embittered calls from its dealers or just a simple bit of soul searching that spurred Honda to react so quickly, but here we are, just one model year later and there’s a surprisingly comprehensive update on sale. But is it an impressive about-face for Honda or just a bit of apple-polishing and slight-of-hand? We spent a week with a loaded EX-L to find out.

Toyota Corolla Vs. Hyundai Elantra: Compare Cars

Together, the Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla couldn’t be more emblematic of how far the Korean automakers have come, yet how conservative several of the long-respected Japanese brands have remained as of late. Just a quick look at these two models, side by side, says a lot. The Elantra, which was completely redesigned for 2011, may very well…

Report: Chrysler expecting up to 200,000 9-speed transmissions for 3 models this year

Camouflaged 2014 Jeep Liberty replacement prototype - spy shot

Striving for improved fuel economy, we already knew that Chrysler will begin using a nine-speed automatic transmission in some of its new products this year, but what we haven’t known is that volume at which this gearbox will be used. According to Bloomberg, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has been quoted as saying that the automaker expects to sell close to 200,000 units equipped with this new transmission in 2013. Those gear-rich trannies will be spread out across three models, consisting of the redesigned Chrysler 200, the still-unnamed Jeep Liberty replacement and the Dodge Dart.

This transmission should play a pivotal role in making Chrysler vehicles more competitive in their respective segments. Just for comparison, one of the Dart’s key competitors, the Toyota Corolla, still uses a four-speed automatic, and a previous report indicates that the next-generation 200 could get up to 38 miles per gallon on the highway, which is better than most non-hybrid midsize sedans on the market. Marchionne says that the new Jeep model is expected during the second quarter of this year, but there is no word as to when the new 200 or nine-speed Dart will debut, but clearly Dodge would like to have the transmission in its compact yesterday. As for that volume figure, it definitely doesn’t seem out of reach since the Dart, Liberty and 200 combined for a total of more than 225,000 units in 2012.

How many more gears can we expect in future cars? Probably not many more, since the CEO of transmission-builder ZF, Stefan Sommer, previously stated that nine speeds was the “natural limit” for transmissions.

Toyota’s Furia Concept Hints At The Next Corolla

By Kurt Ernst

Toyota’s Furia Concept

The Toyota Corolla doesn’t offer much of interest to driving enthusiasts, but there’s no denying the fact that Toyota sells them by the boatload. Why it’s still among the best selling cars in the United States is something of a mystery, since there are plenty of compact cars on the market today that offer up better fuel economy, more style and more amenities for the same kind of money. If you need further proof, consider this: the current Toyota Corolla comes with the buyers choice of a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. When was the last time that a four-speed automatic (or a 5MT) was considered “class-leading?”

A new Corolla is in the works, and the Furia Concept, shown at this week’s Detroit Auto Show, gives us an idea of what the new car’s styling will look like. Calling the theme “Iconic Dynamism,” the Furia uses its “athletic stance” to lure in a new generation of youthful buyer. Maybe it’s just us, but we see quite a bit of the current Honda Civic in the car’s design, too.

Since the Furia is a concept, some of its design is a bit exaggerated. We seriously doubt that scowling front fascia will see production, and no entry-level economy car is going to ride on 19-inch alloy wheels. It’s not likely the LED headlights will see production, and the Furia’s carbon fiber trim will likely be an optional upgrade (if it’s offered on the Corolla at all).

Toyota’s Furia Concept

Exactly how much of the Furia will be present in the new Corolla remains to be seen. The Ford Evos did a pretty good job of interpreting the current Ford Fusion, so maybe the Furia is closer to the actual next-generation Corolla than most concept cars. If that’s the case, Toyota is walking a fine line: while plenty of Corolla shoppers are first-time car buyers, the current model attracts a surprising number of older buyers, looking for a reliable and economical second car. Push the styling envelope too far, and you risk sending these buyers into the arms of other brands.

Detroit: Toyota debuts Furia concept, heralds next Corolla design

By Jeffrey N. Ross

After playing it safe over the last several generations of the Toyota Corolla, it appears Toyota might finally be ready to make a big leap forward. Toyota has finally unveiled the 2013 Corolla Furia Concept at the Detroit Auto Show, which hints at the future design for this automaker’s popular compact (the Corolla is actually the best-selling car of all time).

The Furia Concept has a striking face with narrow headlights, vertical marker lights and a massive eight-sided grill, while its short hood and raked windshield give it a more modern look like the Civic and Mazda3. The front is overly stylized, similar to what we see on the new Camry and Avalon. Based on the most recent teaser we saw for this concept, the rear of the car will be equally sporty and modern with arrow-shaped LED taillights.

Comparing the specs of the concept to the current Corolla, the Furia is only about two inches longer and wider, but it also sits lower and has a wheelbase that is almost four inches longer.

Scroll down for Toyota’s official press release.
