Numerous injuries reported in large explosion at Texas fertilizer plant

DEVELOPING: Emergency crews in Texas are responding to two large explosions at a fertilizer plant in the town of West, near Waco, authorities say.

Gayle Scarbrough, a spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety in Waco, told television station KWTX that DPS troopers have been transporting the injured to hospitals in their patrol cars. She says six helicopters were also en route.

The blast at West Fertilizer plant, reported shortly before 8 p.m. CT, was confirmed by Waco police dispatch operators. First responders are dealing with numerous injuries and major damage to structures and vehicles, Scarbrough said.

Several buildings, some in residential areas, were reported to be burning, others destroyed, and a nearby nursing home was damaged, according to a report from KWTX.

Initial reports say people are trapped in a nearby nursing home and an apartment building.

A local school football field is being setup as a staging area.

According to scanner traffic, authorities are trying to block drivers from coming into town and evacuations are underway, FOX17 reports.

Oklahoma Dept. of Public Safety Pilots Inline/Online

New Online Scheduling System Expected to Improve Wait Time

OKLAHOMA CITY–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Thanks to the new online scheduling system, Inline/Online, visiting one of Oklahoma’s Driver License (DL) offices is about to get easier. Beginning March 26 with the SWOKC Driver License office, the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety (DPS) is piloting this new service along with six additional Oklahoma City and Tulsa Metro locations.

“We realize there is a problem. We were hearing reports of people arriving at our Driver License offices at four in the morning, only to have a long line and a long day, waiting for them.” said DPS Commissioner, Michael C. Thompson. “Inline/Online is the solution.”

Inline/Online is an online scheduling system that gives patrons the opportunity to reserve appointments online and avoid the inconvenience of waiting in line on a first-come-first-serve basis. Drivers choose an appointment type and time based on availability at their desired location, and can anticipate being in-and-out of the Driver License office within an hour of arrival.

The pilot consists of a systematic rollout of seven locations in an attempt for DPS to appropriately assess the needs of each facility. The launch dates and for each location pilot are:

Baswood BioViper™ Wastewater Pretreatment System Begins Operations at Dr Pepper Snapple Group Bottling Plant

Process Wastewater Solution Supports Sustainability, Reduces Cost

HOUSTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Baswood Corporation, a provider of advanced wastewater treatment systems, today announced the start of full-scale operations of its BioViperTM biological pretreatment system at the Dr Pepper Snapple Group (NYS: DPS) Houston bottling plant. Using Baswood‘s patented technologies, the BioViper™ delivers an energy-efficient pretreatment solution that significantly lowers the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in the bottling plant’s facility’s effluent while supporting DPS‘s environmental sustainability goals.

With digestion rates of 75 to 90 percent, the Baswood system provides a reduction in the plant’s organic loading, which allows DPS to minimize its burden on the City of Houston wastewater treatment operations and increases the city’s capacity to treat wastewater from other industrial customers.

The proprietary BioViperTM system requires 40 percent less energy to operate than traditional digestion systems and 25 percent less energy than other emerging technologies. In addition to a smaller carbon footprint, the BioViper™ occupies a small physical footprint, which enabled the pretreatment facility to be built within the existing DPS property boundaries. The modular and scalable system can expand if additional capacity is required for the plant’s bottling operations.

“Baswood’s BioViperTM system reduces both cost and our impact on the environment and public resources,” said Kendall Yorn, senior vice president of manufacturing and engineering for DPS. “Clean water is in everyone’s interest, and this new technology is a major step forward in our commitment to finding sustainable solutions that positively affect our community.”

“All of us at Baswood are proud that our wastewater treatment technology is making a significant contribution not only to DPS‘s sustainability initiatives, but also to its bottom line,” said Michael Walker, CEO of Baswood. “Our system’s modular, efficient solution significantly lowers the cost of wastewater pretreatment, which enables our customers, regardless of their size, to gain a rapid return on their investment.”

The BioViperTM is based on the patented Aerobic/Anaerobic Integrated Media System (AIMS), which maximizes biological treatment efficiency utilizing Baswood’s Dry Cycle Aerobic/Anaerobic Digestion (DCAD) technology. As wastewater passes through distinct treatment zones within the system, sequential …read more

Hundreds turn out to search for missing Utah teen

Police say hundreds of volunteers have turned out to help search for a Utah teen last seen Tuesday night.

Volunteers gathered at a Mormon meeting house to get directions on where to search for Brooklyn Gittins, who was last seen by family members Tuesday night in her bedroom, Fox13Now.com reported.

Investigators found no evidence of a forced entry, and family believe the 13-year-old may have run away. Authorities consider her endangered.

Police say Gittins was wearing a gray t-shirt with a pink U of U logo and black pajama-style pants with a Scottish dog design. Gittins left home without shoes, a coat or her eyeglasses.

“Brooklyn, if you’re listening, please come home. We want you back Brooklyn. We need you to come home. We’re not mad, nothing will happen,” Craig Hiller, Gittens’ grandfather pleaded.

Police say they have contacted her friends, but she has yet to make contact with anyone, Fox13Now.com reported.

“We have the DPS helicopter and canine units canvassing the area. We’ve also had ground searches,” Sheriff Jim Winder told Fox13Now.com

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said Gittins has run away once before, and there is concern about a cold storm in the forecast.

“We’re concerned with how she was dressed,” Hiller told Fox13Now.com.

Gittens is described as 5-ft tall, 110 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes. Police believe she is not wearing shoes.
