snowmelt from part of car runs to 4' section of wall on conrete floor of garage.

By treen38

Hi, I have a concrete slab home, built in 50’s with an tiny attached 1-car garage. Near the front of the garage at NW corner is where my door to laundry room and rest of house is located. Within a couple feet of the laundry doorway are my waterpipes which go into the slab.
Snowmelt from the front psgr side of my suv lands on floor and travels to the wall where the water pipes are located. I currently lay down 6mil plastic with edges wrapped in wood to ‘hold’ the snowmelt. I’ve been doing this for years and occasionally leaks occur. Water has made it to the edge of the laundry room door. The year after I added new drywall to laundryroom, I got water damage again. Years ago I replaced about 4′ of damaged drywall in the garage but this has also gotten damaged.
I’ve had estimates from 2 companies who place objects(can’t remember name) below the slab to raise the floor. One company reported it wouldnt work and the other guy wanted to sell me $6000 in work but was a yahoo. My thought to grind down concrete near center of floor to move water away from the wall was logically shot down (d/t slope, may cause water to flow to other wall, etc)by one who recommended adding a leveler to the floor. I have serious concerns that this option would eventually lead to the levelling product peeling, etc over time. I may or may not have a vapor barrier below the att garage. I learned there is one below the actual 1950’s house after I had radon mitigation installed. Concrete in garage does, of course, get condensation, but I’m concerned I also get moisture coming up through the concrete. I believe my water pipes, subsurface, are in tact. Water consumption has been stable throughout the years. Mudjacking has been recommended but I’m concerned this could cause damage to water pipes subsurface which would be a big expense. It has also been recommended to have old floor removed and new floor poured including new gravel, etc underlayment. The walls of the garage are finished. I can’t see how the house and the garage are connected at the slab or if they share the same vertical part of the slab on their shared walls.. if this makes sense. House and garage built at same time. One guy suggested cutting a trench in concrete and running a drain down the length of the garage and on to the driveway. That sounded scary and I could see lots of maintenance.
I imagine this problem happens in many garages. Anyone have any decent solutions? I’d like it to be a permanant solution or a solution that a future owner of the home would find acceptable and be able to pass a house inspection. Water pipe location is a consideration for any good solution. BTW, there is no drain in the garage. I do have a 1 …read more

1×4 or 1×6 copperwood fence installed with steel posts

By treen38

Hello!
A couple months ago I researched wood fencing and got estimates. I visited a fencing business to see a multi-year old comparison of cedar vs copperwood privacy fencing which were installed side-by-side with steel posts. Thought pickets(individual vert) were 1×6.
Yesterday I signed off to have work done. Estimator only gave me other addresses to see fencing yesterday. I noted contract was for 1×4 ‘pickets’. Note this does truly refer to 6′ tall privacy fence not a picket fence.
Questions:
*Is there a difference in durability between 1×4 and 1×6 6′ tall pickets (ie warping, twisting, etc)? Aesthetically, I prefer 1×6 but don’t know if this is actually an option.
*I know that steel posts allow the fence to have more ‘give’ & that use of wooden posts allows for a more rigid fence. They drive the Steel posts 4′ into the ground(I will dbl check this, otherwise 3′ but believe the former). No concrete is used with the steel posts. Is this acceptable? I live in IL. If I’d chosen treated wooden posts, they’d use concrete. BTW, they don’t use post caps on the wooden posts & other companies didn’t either. The company I chose is well-respected in the area.
*My 15yo Menards picket fence is spaced 8′ apart between wooden posts I set in concrete. I elected to continue the 8′ length with new fence but would 6′ spacing be better d/t use of steel posts already creating a less rigid fence? Is it possible to add a wooden post at corners and 1 in center of the (longest) 49′ run or would this put different stresses on opposite side of fence panels and create problems? (panels are not pre-fab. Fence built on-site)
BTW: 21’x49’x12′ footage + 2 gates. I asked that fence be level on the top and that fence pickets be 2″ off the ground. I currently have brick placed ground-level below my old fence to lessen trimming. Rales are 2×4. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank-you.

GSoC: Week 5

Image

So, lets start with the bad news: My Visa application to attend Akademy 2013 in Bilbao, Spain got rejected and so, I missed out on (a) meeting all you wonderful people, (b) giving a presentation on my GSoC project at the ‘Students Program Presentation’, and (c) organizing my very first BoF. Nevermind, there will surely be many more ‘Akademy’-s in my life. :)

Moving on to the good part: I am quite in pace with my stipulated GSoC time-line.

I am done with adding all the Scenario Units that I had proposed to add to the Basic Course Skeleton, namely:

  • In a Restaurant
  • At a Bank
  • In a Zoo
  • At a Job Interview
  • During an Emergency
  • Pets
  • At a Party

The Basic Course Skeleton now comprises of nineteen complete Scenario Units as shown below:

Also, I have created both the ‘ArtiKulate বাংলা’ (ArtiKulate Bengali) and the ‘ArtiKulate हिन्दी’ (ArtiKulate Hindi) courses.

In the Bengali Course, I am done with translating seven whole units to Bengali along with all the unit titles. In the translated units, all the related phonemes have also been tagged for every phrase.

Image

Below, you can see a part of the ‘আবহাওয়া’ (Weather) scenario unit showing some words, expressions and sentences.

Image

In the Hindi Course, all the unit titles have been translated to Hindi.

Image

By Week 7, I will be done with translating the entire Basic Course Skeleton to Bengali as well as Hindi and the recordings for the Bengali Course should also be ready by then. In other words, the ‘ArtiKulate বাংলা’ Course will be completely ready by Week 7 and the ‘ArtiKulate हिन्दी’ Course will only have the recordings left.

BTW, all the Akademy 2013 attendees, please DO NOT forget to attend the two BoFs on Artikulate scheduled on Wednesday, July 17. The BoFs will be organized by Andreas Cord-Landwehr (IRC Nick: CoLa) on ‘Personas for Language Learning Apps’ and ‘How to contribute to Artikulate’ at 09:30 hours and 10:30 hours respectively.

Cheers! o/

Additional return vents

By mossman

I’m thinking of installing additional return vents on the upper floor–one in the front bedroom and one in the master bedroom. The attic fan and 18″ of insulation just aren’t doing the trick. I think it may because of the open design of the house. Half of the first floor has vaulted ceilings which are open to the upstairs hall, which both of these bedrooms are located off of. There is one 14×14 return on the first floor and one 14×14 return on the second floor directly above, both are in the vaulted area of the home. My question is this–will it help to install a small return vent in each of the bedrooms? I’m think something like an 8×10 vent in the ceiling of both rooms. I can easily tap off the main return duct from the attic and branch off to each room. All of the heat from the entire first floor rises up and collects on the top floor and the AC just can’t keep it cool up there. One return vent on the wall in the hall upstairs just doesn’t seem adequate to suck all the hot air off that floor. Yes, I know, I should do a Manual-J load calculation, but I won’t be doing that. Plus I don’t need to do a load calc to know that it is too hot upstairs and comfortable on the other floors. BTW, I tried closing off most of the first floor vents and return register and that didn’t help. I need to get the heat off the top floor.

How can I do this in VI editor?

By kraljic

Note:
The above scenario is just an example. In my actual requirement, the file has 14 million lines and I want to copy 2000 lines after the 12th million line 🙂

Perl help – how to assign output of perl to variable

By whipuras

Hi, guys, i have a script i inherited from a coworker but i’m not perl savy. The script works but i would like it to work better. I want to run this command

./ciscomgrtest.pl -r “show version” -h hosts.router

and have the script goto each router in the hosts.router file and run the command “show version” on telnet.

Right now the script works but i have to put in the “show version” inside a variable inside the actual script like this.

#!/usr/local/bin/perl
#
#
use Net::Ping;
use Net::Telnet;
use Net::DNS::Resolver;
use Getopt::Std;
use lib '/home/sadmin';
use BER;
use SNMP_Session;

$COMMAND = 'show version';

How can i get that -r switch to put the “show version” from the command line into the variable when run? BTW the -r is arbitray, any switch would work.

hope this makes sense. thanks

Raphaël Hertzog: My Free Software Activities in January 2013

This is my monthly summary of my free software related activities. If you’re among the people who made a donation to support my work (84.25 €, thanks everybody!), then you can learn how I spent your money. Otherwise it’s just an interesting status update on my various projects.

Debian Packaging

In one of my customer projects, I had to use libwebsockets and since it was not packaged for Debian, I filed a “Request For Package” (RFP #697671). I discovered a fork of this library on github and decided to mail the original author and the author of the fork to learn a bit more about the reason of the fork. It turns out that they miscommunicated and that the original author was interested by most of the improvements. The fork still exists but the important fixes and most of the improvements have been merged (and he released a version 1.0 after that!). Furthermore the original author setup a bug tracker to better organize the project and so that the author of the fork can submit patches and be sure that they won’t be forgotten (as it happened in the past). I spend quite some time discussing with both parties but at the end I’m pleased to see that good progress has been made (although nobody stepped up to maintain this package in Debian).

I packaged zim 0.59 (an important bugfix release) and wordpress 3.5.1 (with several security fixes). I updated the dpkg-dev squeeze backports to version 1.16.9~bpo60+1 on request of Daniel Schepler. This backport led me to file #698133 on kgb-client because the bot literally spammed the #debian-dpkg IRC channel for multiple hours by resending old commit notices that got merged in the squeeze-backports branch. BTW, they need help to get this issue fixed.

I updated python-django-registration to fix a compatibility issue with python3-sphinx (see #697721 for details).

Misc Debian Stuff

Serious bug with salt. I filed a grave bug on salt (#697747—) and prepared the upload to fix the issue on request of the maintainer. In the mean time, the maintainer orphaned the package. Franklin G. Mendoza already announced its willingness to take over but this package deserves multiple maintainers since this is a good piece of software that is getting more and more popular.

net-retriever and alternate keyrings. I filed a wishlist bug (#698618) on net-retriever to request a way for derivatives to use another keyring package (i.e. not debian-archive-keyring-udeb) without having to fork net-retriever.

Linux 3.7 on armel/armhf. I helped the kernel maintainers to fix the 3.7 kernel on armel/armhf by reporting on IRC the results of successive failing kernel rebuilds on those architectures (this kernel version is only in experimental).

Carl9170 firmware. I also pinged the kernels maintainers about a missing firmware for the carl9170 driver (already reported in #635840) and Ben Hutchings took care of re-activating its inclusion in upstream’s linux-firmware.git and then uploaded firmware-free 3.2 to Debian. Thanks Ben!

New QA team member. And to finish with the miscellaneous stuff, I helped Holger Levsen to be added to the “qa” group so that he could integrate his awesome work on automated QA checks with Jenkins.

Debian France

Preparation for Solutions Linux. The people organizing the “village of associations” in the Solutions Linux conference have asked all organizations to apply for a booth if they wanted one. Last year Carl Chenet took care of organizing this and this time we had to find someone else. I made multiple call for volunteers (on the mailing list, on my blog) without much success but I finally managed to convince Tanguy Ortolo to take care of this. Thank you Tanguy!

Get in touch with treasurer who disappeared. During the transition with the former Debian France officers, it has been said that Aurélien Gérôme — another former treasurer of Debian France — had entirely disappeared together with some papers that he never gave to his successor. I didn’t want to give up on this without at least trying to get in touch by myself… so after multiple tries (over IRC, phone, and snail mail), and some weeks without answers, he got back to me, explaining that he’s currently in a foreign country and that he will take care of that next time that he comes in France. o/

New website in preparation. Replacing the single-page website webpage with a more comprehensive website is an important goal. Alexandre Delanoë provided a basic ikiwiki setup inspired by dsa.debian.org. I cleaned it and integrated it in a git repository on our machine. There’s thus a new test website on http://france.debian.net/test/. Tanguy Ortolo and Fernando Lagrange immeditaly made some small improvements but since then nobody stepped up to further complete the website. I’ll try to do this in February and put the new website in production.

Paypal and handling of members. We installed a paypal plugin in galette so that members can renew their membership online. I asked Christian Bayle to try it out and we found some issues that I reported upstream and that got fixed. But this is only the first step, we want to go much further and automate all the membership handling, from membership renewal mail reminders up to integration in the accounting system. To this end, I filed some new tickets in the Galette tracker and completed some that were already opened: #490, #368 and #394. We requested a quote for those tickets and Debian France is going to fund the work on those tickets so that we have a 100% free software solution for our needs.

Thanks

See you next month for a new summary of my activities.

    That’s OK, just don’t burn or deface the Koran!!

    Every day Shirts like this are mass produced, mostly in “South East Asia”, marketed
    and sold by street vendors throughout the Middle East
    and it’s simply OK.
    The mass-murder of 9-11 in 2001 is a celebrated event by
    millions of these people.
    Funny how racism and offending other races
